More and more birds are flying to settle in Qinghai Lake, one of the
highest inland lakes in China, thanks to the conservation(保护) efforts
of the local government. Covering an area of over 4,600 square kilometres,
Qinghai Lake is also the country’s biggest salt water lake.
一
二
三
Located in Qinghai Province of northwest China, the lake is famous
for two islands. The two islands have plenty of floating grass and various
kinds of fish, offering rich food sources to birds. The islands have become
a paradise for different kinds of groups of birds and have been called the Bird
Island.
一
二
三
Each March and April, when ice and snow covering the Qinghai-Tibet
Plateau(高原) start to melt, over 20 kinds of birds fly to the Bird Island
to lay eggs. During the months, flocks of birds cover the whole sky over the
islands and bird eggs can be found everywhere. Visitors can hear the singing
of birds from miles away. These have become a world-famous symbol of the
lake.
To protect this paradise for birds and support calls for ecological protection, China set up the Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve
in 1997.

Inspectors(检察员) and conservators often patrol(巡查) the
lake, enriching local residents’ knowledge of related laws and spreading
knowledge about animal protection to visitors. They are making great efforts
to call on people to love and protect the birds. At the same time, they have
built special fences around the island area to prevent wolves, foxes and
other carnivorous(食肉的) animals, as well as illegal hunters from
breaking up the birds’ building nests, laying eggs and breeding(繁殖).
As a result, more and more birds are coming to the islands for sheltering
and breeding.

Can you imagine? A couple in Liaoning Province spent nearly half a
century making two poor mountains into a home for rare(稀有的) birds.
Tian Wangui and his wife Lu Min live in Qiantian Village. After leaving
the army in the 1980s, Tian returned home and decided to plant fruit trees
on the hills. In 1982, the couple got the contract right(承包权) of two
mountains. “There was nothing on the mountains back then,” said Tian.
一

四
At first, the couple planted some fruit trees. The suitable land for fruit
tree planting was limited(有限的). Looking at the “lonely” trees, the
couple came up with a new idea-to plant more kinds of trees to keep the fruit trees company.
But this idea didn’t go smoothly in the beginning. Many trees failed to
keep alive because of the terrible environment. But the two farmers didn’t
give up.
一

四
After lots of tries, they found that several kinds of trees were suitable.
They planted these trees. Now, the two mountains are covered by more than
50,000 trees. The mountains have also attracted rare birds. The reason why
birds fly over there is the grown trees and the improving environment.
Last year, Tian and Lu’s mountains were given the name “Lu Ling”.
“We treat the mountains and trees as our children,” said Lu. “Even as
we grow old, our children will continue to watch over the birds and keep
our dream alive.”

Wetlands cover a small part of the planet, but they have special
abilities. They can store 50 times more carbon than rainforests helping to
keep the greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere(大气层). Wetlands are
necessary for the food production of the country.

The year of 2024 is the 32nd year that China has joined the Ramsar
Convention on Wetlands. Over the past years, China has done a lot to
protect wetlands. Among the 43 “international wetland cities”, 13 are
in China, the most in the world. Besides, there are 901 national wetland
parks in China. At the same time, more than 800,000 hectares(公顷)
of wetlands have been restored or added since 2012. And on June 1, 2022,
the country’s first law about wetland protection was carried out. The country’s
goal is to bring 55 percent of wetlands under protection by 2025 and
become a key leader in global wetland protection by 2030.
