At the end of 2019,I learned that Here After AI, whose goal is to let the living communicate with the dead, was looking for applicants of its new AI project.Interested in what it was promising, I applied to experiment the software on my very-much-alive parents.
At first, I thought it would be just a fun projectto see what was technologically possible. Then their health condition added some urgency to the experiment. I was frightened that my parents might die since my father had been diagnosed with cancer and my mother was recently developing symptoms of early Alzheimer's disease, and that with the distance between us, I might never have the chance to say goodbye.
The first step was an interview. My parents were asked questions by a techician for hours-about everything from their earliest memories to what they believe will happen after they die. Whether through illness-generated concerns or a willingness to humor their daughter, my parents put up zero resistance. The company then took their responses and started to create the voice assistants. A few months later, my virtual parents arrived via email attachment.
When I communicated with them through the app on my phone, my hands were shaking. I hadn't seen my actual, real parents for six months. They told me personal stories Id never heard. They gave me life advice and told me things about their childhoods, as well as my own. It was mesmerizing.
Personally,I have mixed feelings about my experiment. Im glad to have my virtual parents. They've enabled me to learn new things about my parents, and it's comforting to think that those softwares will be there even when my parents aren't. On the other hand, I can't help but find it sad that it took a stranger interviewing my parents for me to properly appreciate the complex people they are. But I feel lucky to have had the chance to grasp that-and to still have the precious opportunity to spend more time with them and learn more aboutthem, face to face, no technology involved.
24. Why did the author initially join the AI project?
A.To test out the new technology.
B.To preserve her parents' voice.
C.To learn more about her parents' life.
D.To remove the worry about her parents' health.
25.What can we learn about the author's parents?
A.They liked talking a lot.
B. They died from the illnesses.
C.They opposed joining the project at first.
D.They provided data for the project.
26. What does the underlined word “mesmerizing" mean in paragraph 4?
A.Alarming. B.Fascinating. C.Inspiring. D.Disgusting.
27. What does the author realize at last?
A. AI means never saying goodbye to our parents.
B.The advances in AI technology have pros and cons.
C.The real connection with our parents matters most.
D.AI allows us to learn more about our virtual parents.

Current medical guidelines in many parts of the world recommend mild exercise for older people as a way to prevent both physical and mental decline. However,if you want to help your grandma stay mentally sharp into her golden years, you could buy her an Xbox, the latest research suggests. Researchers have conducted a study that found playing interactive video games could be more effective than just exercise alone in preventing mental decline in older people.
To investigate this, the researchers compared two groups of people aged 72 years and over, one of which did standard exercise for 12 weeks, and at the same time the other instead played sports games on an Xbox, which combine regular exercise with cognitive(认知的)exercise.
The study's senior author, Tracy Kolbe Alexander said they found a marked difference in the results between the two groups. The 45 participants took cognitive assessment test before and after the 12-week program and the gaming group showed improvements in cognitive ability. All the participants had reported mild forms of memory loss but none had any form of dementia(痴呆)diagnosed when the experiment was done. However, the participants using Xbox showed physical improvement particularly in aspects such as strength and balance, which the researchers said were very important to preventing falls.
“We are not so sure that interactive gamning is going to prevent dementia or·anything like that, but our results showed a clear cognitive benefit,” Professor Kolbe Alexander said, “Keeping up physical activities via interactive gaming could also be of benefit to older people who lived in areas where there were physical barriers to exercise, such as lack of access to parks or walking tracks.”
28. How did the researchers conduct the investigation?
A.By listing examples. B.By making explanations.
C.By making comparisons. D.By analyzing survey data.
29.What happened to the participants using Xbox?
A. They gained little strength. B. They improved memory a lot.
C.They suffered mental disease. D.They performed better in balance.
30. What can be inferred from Professor Kolbe's words?
A. Parks can be used to avoid memory loss.
B. Interactive gaming can be achieved flexibly.
C. Dementia can be prevented by Xbox gaming.
D. Cognition can be improved by standard exercise.
31.In which section of a newspaper can the text be found?
A.Health and Lifestyle. B. Economy and Business.
C. Tools and Resources. D.Entertainment and Sports.

South Korean government has tried everything to persuade women to have babies. Among their initiatives: sponsored housing for new couples, discounted after-childbirth care for new mothers, even a "baby payment" for each new born.Corporate South Korea is also getting in action, trying to delay a population crisis that could see the country's workforce halve within 50 years.
"We will continue to do what we can as a company to solve the low-birth issue,"Lee Joong-keun, the chairman of Booyoung Group, a Seoul-based construction company, said this month after awarding a total $5.25 million to his employees for babies born since 2021. Other companie are offering payments, too. This development has come about as South Korea's fertility rate (生育率)-the average number of children a woman has over her lifetime --- has decreased to 0.78 in 2022.That means the population is aging rapidly. "The main reasons behind the falling birthrate are the financial burdens of child care and challenges of balancing work and family," Lee said.
South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol praised companies that came up with "tax benefits and other various support measures to boost child birth," according to his spokes-woman. Despite aggressive efforts, South Korea's fertility rate is on course to sink further to 0.65 by 2025. This is largely because of the stress put on women, who face fierce workplace discrimination if they want to pursue a career while having children, experts say. South Kore a ranked 105th out of 146 countries in gender equality last year, according to the Global Gender Gap Report.
Whether financial bonus can have a positive impact on fertility remains an unanswered question. "Cash payouts are not affordable nor sustainable options for many companies," said Yoon In-jin, a sociology professor at Korea University."More importantly, South Korea's male-dominated corporate culture has to fundamentally change in favor of working women," he said. "Korean women will start having more babies if they don't have to sacrifice their career for it." Nearly 50% South Korean companies punished workers using parental leave, especially on promotions, according to Labor Ministry statistics.
32.What population problem is Soutn Korea very likely to face in the future?
A. Its fertility rate will continuously decline.
B. Its population will halve within 50 years.
C.There will only be the aged very soon.
D.New-born babies will make up 65% by 2025.
33.What is the author's attitude towards the current money-awarding measure?
A. Supportive. B. Uncertain. C.Far-sighted. D.Critical.
34.What does academic Yoon In-jin support to do in boosting fertility rate?
A. Provide equal career security to women as men are enjoying.
B. Improve South Korea's global rank in gender equality.
C. Remove women's financial burdens and home-work balancing challenges.
D. Offer couples with new born babies more tax benefits and other supports.
35.What's the main idea of this passage?
A. The reasons why South Korean women are not having babies.
B. The policies South Kare a government applies to persuade women to have babies.
C.The measures corporate South Korea takes to promote birthrate.
D.The severe discrimination South Korean women are facing.

Short-form videos, also known as Shorts, have gained great popularity, particulrly on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. 36 However, there's a growing concern that watching too many Shorts can affect children's brains.
The phenomenon known as “TikTok Brain” arises from the app's short and addictive videos. Similar to candy, these videos gcnerate rapid dopamine(多巴胺)releases, stimulating the brain's pleasure center. A study was conducted to investigate the impact of Shorts on the teenage brains. 37 They stimulated the brain's reward centers more intensely than random videos.
Our brains process visual information faster than text, which explains why videos tend to outperform text-based content online. Due to their underdeveloped reading skills, children are more easily to become addicted to visual stimuli.Remarkably, social media platforms can do a lot harm to the development of reading habits among younger users. 38
According to Jessica Griffin, a professor of child psychology, Shorts affect the developing brains of children and teenagers. The prefrontal cortex(前额叶皮质)is responsible for attention, self-control, memory, and learning flexibility. 39 This delayed development makes young individuals more easily influenced by Shorts.
In conclusion, the constant exposure to fast-paced and stimulating content in Shorts can impact children's attention. To address this issue, parents can have open conversations with their children about the potential risks. 40 Furthermore, encouraging physical activities and outdoor experiences is also crucial to develop a balance d lifestyle.
A. Some even do not include text at all.
B.TikTok's feed is created addictive by design.
C.But it does not fully mature until around the age of 25.
D. It is helpful to use screen time management tools for Shorts.
E. Short-term memory and the ability to concentrate are affected.
F.It revealed that these videos are personalized, selected and fed to users.
G.They're brief attention-grabbing videos that can be entertaining and addictive.

Dear fellow students,
Wild animals are on the verge of extinction due to the destruction of their habitats and living spaces by human activities. According to statistics, about 75 species go extinct every day in the world. The reasons for this include the encroachment of human activities on their habitats, and the actions of hunters.
To protect wild animals, we should take the following measures. Firstly, we should raise public awareness about the importance of wildlife protection. Secondly, we can support the establishment of more natural reserves to provide a safe haven for wild animals. Finally, we should firmly oppose illegal hunting and trading of wild animals.
Let's act now to protect these precious lives.

After they got home, Adam went to his room and regretted having done that. He realized that he should have listened to his mother. He promised himself that he would never steal again and would always be a good boy. From that day on, Adam learned the importance of honesty and respecting others' property.
