My backpack weighed 53 pounds, full of dried food, water and other bits and bobs. I was ready for my first through-hike for 15 days, setting out on the 180-kilometre Sunshine Coast Trail, Canada’s longest hut-to-hut trail (小路).
While I was in the company of other hikers on most nights, the-second hut was empty. A hidden path nearby led to a rough bench on a small knoll (土墩) overlooking a clearing. I imagined someone had created and placed this bench in this exact spot not for themselves but for future hikers seeking a moment’s peace in the wilderness.
I came to cherish the solitude (孤独). Having the forest entirely to myself, I sat and stared out at what felt like my own private lake, daydreaming while watching the grass waving and listening to the gentle sound of the water. Out here, I didn’t need to accommodate anyone else’s needs and wants. I could just be me with the freedom to do whatever I wanted, No schedule, no rush and not a care in the world.
The trail varied a lot. Sometimes it was wide and flat; other times it snaked through the forest with no end in sight. The reflective orange trail markers guided me — squares for southbound and diamonds for northbound. It’s hard to get lost, even for someone like me with no sense of direction.
Through-hiking creates a hiker’s grapevine (小道消息). At one hut, I was told about a man from France who might be coming my way. Later, a pair of hikers also spoke of this happy, easygoing Frenchman with long, curly brown hair hiking at a leisurely pace. Over the next two days, someone even asked if I was that Frenchman, which made me laugh. While I was preparing dinner on top of Tin Hat Mountain, a man with long brown hair approached me, “Are you Tommy?” “Pierre?” I shouted. It turned out Pierre learned of my existence from all the hut logbooks I signed. He’d caught up to me and we became friends even before meeting.
Why do people go through-hiking? Is it to be in nature? To see beautiful views? One could do those things without all this hassle (麻烦,繁琐的事). I sought independence and adventure, to experience a different outlook on life, and to truly live and feel the raw grandness of the world. It was a quest — to visit every hut on the trail and make it from start to finish on my own two feet.
In the end, I settled back into city life with these memories and a slightly changed perspective about what’s important. The next time I’m at work, listening to co-workers’, complaint, my mind will wander back to life on the trail — content and free.
4. In the third paragraph, the author uses the phrase “felt like my own private lake” mainly to ________.
A. convey a sense of ownership and calmness.
B. highlight the loneliness experienced during the hike.
C. emphasize the vastness of the natural landscape.
D. compare the lake to a personal possession.
5. How did the author distinguish between southbound and northbound trails?
A. By the color of the markers. B. By the shape of the markers.
C. By the distance between markers. D. By the presence of hut logbooks.
6. What connected the author and Pierre before they met?
A. Shared interest in French culture. B. Mutual friends from previous hikes.
C. Notes left in hut logbooks. D. A shared goal to summit Tin Hat Mountain.
7. What lasting effect did the hike have on the author?
A. A desire to permanently leave city life. B. Improved navigation and surviving skills.
C. A newfound appreciation for solitude and simplicity. D. A fear of returning to routine responsibilities.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. C

The boom of artificial intelligence has sparked a wave of new possibilities, but it’s also causing fears among many Americans about their jobs. Recent surveys indicate growing public anxiety, with 51% of Americans expressing concern that AI might replace human jobs, which reflects the groundbreaking power of AI across various industries.
Research highlights notable differences in perception between experts and the general public. While 73% of respondents believe cashier positions will decline due to AI, and 67% anticipate reductions in factory jobs, opinions vary sharply regarding truck drivers. Only 33% of the public foresees job losses in this sector, compared to 62% of Al experts who predict substantial impacts. This gap suggests that the public may underestimate Al's potential to disrupt certain professions.
A crucial distinction exists between traditional automation and modern Al capabilities. As Molly Kinder from the Brookings Institution says, some of these opinions are confusing old automation with what generative AI can do. “Generative AI is not your grandparents’ automation. It’s moving up the skill chain... in ways I don’t think the public is fully aware of.” Unlike earlier technologies that primarily affected manufacturing, contemporary AI can perform complex cognitive tasks such as document analysis, legal research, and financial forecasting — functions traditionally associated with white-collar professionals.
Studies identify several vulnerable sectors, including office administration, legal services, and financial operations. However, researchers caution against simplistic predictions of job elimination (淘汰). Mark Muro, co-author of a Brookings report, notes, “AI is more likely to transform jobs than replace them entirely.” This perspective suggests that while certain tasks may be automated, new opportunities for human-AI collaboration may emerge.
The adoption of AI has been slower than expected in regulated fields like healthcare and law, where human judgment remains crucial. Nevertheless, as MIT professor Eric So observes, “AI’s capabilities are evolving at an unprecedented pace.” From basic chatbots to sophisticated decision-making systems, AI continues to reshape the workplace, creating both challenges and possibilities that society must carefully navigate.
12. Which profession shows the largest difference in perception?
A. Cashiers. B. Truck drivers.
C. Factory workers. D. Legal professionals.
13. What does Molly Kinder emphasize about generative AI?
A. It is limited to simple repetitive tasks. B. It primarily affects manufacturing jobs.
C. It can perform complex cognitive tasks. D. It has been widely adopted in healthcare.
14. What is Mark Muro’s view on AI's impact on jobs?
A. AI will create more jobs than it eliminates.
B. AI is likely to shift rather than replace jobs.
C. AI will completely replace human workers.
D. AI will have no significant impact on employment.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the development of AI?
A. Objective. B. Supportive.
C. Dismissive. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. A

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In today’s world where artificial intelligence (AI) can copy our words, automate our decisions and even simulate emotions, understanding what sets us apart isn’t just philosophical. ____16____ Knowing what makes us unquestionably different from intelligent machines helps us protect and even expand our most valuable strengths— our creativity, emotional intelligence, life experiences and sense of purpose, so that we don’t just coexist with AI, but rise above it, shaping the future instead of being shaped by it. Here are three irreplaceable human attributes (属性).
We have real-life experiences while AI has data. Experience is one of the most powerful things that shape us from the moment on which we’re born. ____17____ While AI, on the other hand, can analyze massive data, it doesn’t learn from pain, joy, failure, or success the way humans do. Experience isn’t just about information— it’s about personal growth.
____18____ We create stories to make sense of the world, find purpose in struggle and connect our past to our future. However, AI doesn’t wonder about “the why” behind what it does. Instead, it just processes requests and generates responses, without caring about the outcome beyond the goals that it’s pre-programmed to achieve.
We have free will while AI has codes (代码). Humans can choose generosity over self- interest, forgiveness over hatred, and innovation over conformity. But AI only follows rules. No matter how advanced, it’s always bound by its programming. ____19____
AI may be extraordinarily useful and helpful, but it will likely never provide what makes us human—empathy (共情), true love, meaningful purpose and life experiences. ____20____ In this way, we can ensure that technology will serve humanity—not the other way around.
A. It’s gaining popularity.
B. Besides, it is deeply practical.
C. We are considerate while AI is creative.
D. We seek meaning while AI follows instructions.
E. It doesn’t have desires, beliefs or independent thoughts.
F. Every failure, success and challenge can influence our future decisions.
G. So value our and others’ emotional depth, life experiences and creative potential.
【答案】16. B 17. F 18. D 19. E 20. G

My Trip to the Smart Village
I took part in the “Walking into Smart Villages” activity last week, and what I saw and felt along the way was truly inspiring.
First, we visited intelligent greenhouses where sensors automatically control temperature and irrigation, greatly improving crop yields. Then we learned to promote local organic vegetables via live-streaming e-commerce. In the afternoon, we took an eco-tour to enjoy the beautiful countryside scenery, learning about local efforts to protect the environment.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a hot July day in Philadelphia. The five boys I was with had grown tired of playing football.
“Hey!” said Ned. “We haven’t climbed the cliff (悬崖) for a long while.”
“Let’s go!” said someone else.
And off they went, running like a group of dogs. I hesitated. I longed to be brave, but I’d been a sickly child most of my eight years and dared not take chances.
“Come on!” called Jerry, my best friend. ’“I’m coming!” I yelled, and ran after them. Finally we arrived at a clearing (林中空地). At the far side was the cliff. It was only about 60 feet high, but to me it looked like the very symbol of the impossible.
One by one, the other boys climbed upward. I stayed behind until the others were halfway up; then trembling and sweating, I began to climb. At some point, I looked back and was scared. The ground below the cliff seemed very far below; one slip and I would fall.
But the boys were chatting above me on an earthen ledge (悬崖岩石突出部) two thirds of the way to the top. I tried my best to catch up with them and stayed as far back on the ledge as I could. In a few minutes, they started up to the top. They planned to walk home by another way from the top.
“Hey, wait!” I cried, “But I cannot, I...”
“You can stay if you want to”, said Ned.
Jerry looked concerned, but he went with the others. I looked down and felt dizzy. I could never climb back down; halfway, I would grow weak, fall and die. But the way up to the top was even worse — higher and steeper; I would never make it.
Silent now, I lay on my stomach, filled with fear and tiredness, unable to move. Night fell and a first star in the sky appeared.

My father began guiding me down, his voice calm yet firm.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
At that moment, I heard the voices of Jerry and my father. I could hardly believe my ears. Jerry must have gone back home and fetched my father, realizing I was in trouble. Their voices seemed to carry a glimmer of hope in the growing darkness. “Don’t move, we’re coming!” Jerry shouted, trying to sound reassuring. My father’s voice followed, steady and calm, “Stay where you are, son. We’ll get you down safely.” The sound of their approach filled me with a sense of relief. Before I knew it, they were beside me, and my father’s hands found mine in the darkness.
My father began guiding me down, his voice calm yet firm. “Take it slow, one step at a time,” he instructed, his hands reaching out to steady me whenever I hesitated. Jerry stayed close to us, and his presence was a silent source of strength. The descent was slow, but with their support, I managed to keep going. My father’s comforting words and Jerry’s occasional words of encouragement kept me focused. As we reached the bottom, I collapsed into my father’s arms, tears streaming down my face. He held me tightly, saying, “You did it, son. You faced your fear and came out stronger.” That night, I learned that courage wasn’t about being fearless, but about finding the strength to move forward despite the fear.

A. Objective. B. Supportive.
C. Dismissive. D. Doubtful.
