The small town of Hay sits on the border(边境) between England and Wales. It was such 1.__a__ quiet place until 1961. That year a man called Richard Booth was back from a trip and 2.__brought__(bring) home a lot of secondhand books. He bought the town's fire station and many empty shops and made them into bookshops. 3.__Finally__(final), Hay became the world's first “book town”.
With the money he made, Booth bought a castle, much 4.__larger__(large) than the other buildings in the town. On April 1, 1977, he jokingly called 5.__himself__(he) “King” and said the town was now an independent(独立的) country! Some local people thought he was a little mad.
6.__But__ he wasn't crazy at all. In fact, the joke made more people interested in this special “country” and they came to Hay 7.__to__buy__(buy) secondhand books. By the 1980s, there were one million books on sale, on 15 km of 8.__shelves__(shelf) in over 30 bookshops.
Then in 1988, a literature festival 9.__was__held__(hold) in Hay. Writers came to talk about their new books, along with scientists, artists and even the President 10.__of__ the USA! Now half a million visitors come to Hay every year and spend over three million pounds.
