never forget the day, on which I was being looked at strangely. The thought
would always stay with me. And I couldn't believe I would lose the friendship of
the person I trusted most.
Five years back, Sally was the new kid in class. I don't know what it was,

answer. My heart was broken.

People think differently, but how does this happen? To find out the
answer, Dr. Guilford, a famous phycologist, carried out a study on
_t
creativity(创造力) in the 197Os. known as The Nine-Dot Puzzle(九点谜
box
题).
In the research, Guilford asked participators(参与者) to connect all nine dots with at most four
straight lines, without lifting pencils from the paper. As a result, only 2o% managed to solve the
puzzle. The following survey showed that all failed participators had looked for ways in the
virtual(虚拟的) box, which is formed with virtual lines. But the winners could break out of the
virtual box and continued their lines in the open space around the dots. The results of Guilford's
research led him to an idea: creativity needs you to go outside the box
The idea was widely spread soon. Overnight, it seemed that there were creativity experts
everywhere, teaching people how to think outside the box. The idea was so popular that no one
thought of checking the facts until two different research teams, Davis and Robert, did another study
To check if Guilford's idea is correct, the participators were divided(分) into two groups. The
first group was given the same instructions as those in Guilford's study. The second group was told
they could draw outside the virtual box. Most people think that at least 6o% of the second group
could solve the puzzle easily. Guess what? Less than 25% solved the puzzle. It was nearly the same
as the result of Guilford's study. The result made everyone surprised, but it was the truth
Let's look more closely at the surprising result. Solving this problem needs people to think
outside the box. However, direct and clear instructions -"think outside the box" did not help
participators solve the puzzle more easily. In some ways, the idea that thinking outside the box
makes people more creative can be improper.
41. Which of the following can solve The Nine-Dot Puzzle?
###。##。)##
_
42. Most people thought that in Guilford's study, more participators would solve the puzzle if
A. they could find out the imagined box more quickly
B. they were given some more time to complete the puzzle
C. they were told to draw the lines outside the imagined box
D. they could discuss the ways together with other participators

The big debate
When we turn on the tap and hot water comes out, do you know the
development of the invention? The earliest baths appeared around 4,000
years ago and showers were in use about 3oo years ago. Today, many
people have both a bath and a shower in their homes. Some people think
having a shower can help wake them up in the morning, while others say a
bath at night makes them feel relaxed and have a good sleep.
Are baths better than showers? Having a bath is relaxing while showers are quick. Which should
we choose? People have discussed about this. Let's have a closer look
Yes-a bath washes the mind and body
Baths are about much more than cleanliness. They are places to relax and you can think about the
coming day so that you can plan tomorrow well there. You will have to do nothing in a bath but read
or eat if you want. Most people have been used to bathing since they were born. For the first few years
of a person's life, they are bathed before bed, not showered.
No-showers are quick and cheap
The cost of baths is more than that of showers. Experts recently worked out that a year of two
baths a day costs f438 but a year of two showers a day costs just f161. Baths are more expensive.

Showers are better for the environment because they use less water and energy. What's more, showers
are efficient when you don't have much time in the morning. You just need 3 minutes to finish it and
it means you can stay in bed for an extra time.
Now, you've learned a bit more about it. You are hoped to scan the QR code in the picture above
to join in the discussion and make your choice. Next week, the result will be published
