A My high school life has been filled with many ups and downs, whether it was social or academic. Even though my current high school was not my first choice, I never regretted attending Southside High School. “Since you have chosen it, then it is the best for you,” said my parents. Up until the junior year I did not realize my capabilities(能力)as a student. Being in the IB Program, I was told that my junior year would be the toughest in all the years of high school. With this “little” piece of information, I walked into my junior year, afraid of my grades. As weeks went by, I started to believe that the junior year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were rapidly declining(下降)and by the end of the first term I had had five Cs in seven of my classes! I could not believe it—I did not want to believe it. I tried my best to get my grades up myself without any help from anyone, but my pride just made my grades worse. And I had to miss out on one of the most important speech and debate competitions all year: States. I was heartbroken. I realized that I could not survive my junior year on my own, so I had to get help fast. Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to nothing but As and Bs. I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself. By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honor roll twice, and I was receiving awards from speeches and debates, tennis and school. Southside has taught me to always keep my head up and never give up on myself no matter what life throws at me. I am proud to be a Southside Tiger. 1. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. The writer always thought Southside High School was the best. B. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was eager to go to high school for my first week. When I got to school on the morning of the first day I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my classroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend, Jimmy. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. After finishing four periods, I didn’t feel too bad. However, the fifth period changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My literature teacher is Mr. Smith. He told us that we would have to write 40 essays(文章)and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this term. I love reading and writing, but come on, 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Then I was anxious. The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too. The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming(令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds and the seniors, having a totally different experience that I had never had before was really exciting. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes. I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people. 4. That’s especially true for high school students. Not only do you have the stress and worry of schoolwork to deal with, you also have many problems of daily life to face. Take the relationship you have with your parents for example. When you were at primary school, your parents were probably your heroes. Whatever they did and whatever they said were always so interesting and funny, but as you grew older it’s likely that you and your parents began to grow apart from each other. Their jokes began to sound awkward, and the last thing you’d want to do is to walk in the park holding hands with them. This is just one of the natural parts of growing older. Life has many difficult stages, but the teenage years are probably the ones that are filled with the most problems. As this is the time of life when we begin to turn into adults, lots of new issues arise. Now, you can’t just rely on your parents to do everything for you—you must be responsible for yourself and your own actions. At the same time, as your body begins to develop, problems arise that you never knew existed. Things like being worried about how you look in front of others soon become daily concerns. While all this is happening, you have to plan for your future. As you come to the end of your school years, you have to make some really big decisions. So yes—being a teenager is really challenging, and you probably have varieties of questions that need answers to. How do you decide whether you should follow the wishes of your parents, or your own?Which career is the most suitable to you and your background? 8. Graduates from university. 根据第一段“That’s especially true for high school students.(对高中生来说尤其如此。)” C 9. From the example of relationship between “you” and “your parents”, what can we know? A. You and your parents begin to grow apart. B. Your parents couldn’t tell interesting stories any more. C. You only want to walk in the park with your friends. D. You are having many difficulties of daily life to deal with. 根据第二段“Not only do you have the stress and worry of schoolwork to deal with, you also have many problems of daily life to face. Take the relationship you have with your parents for example.(你不仅要处理学业上的压力和烦恼, 还要面对日常生活中的许多问题, 以你与父母的关系为例。)” D 10. If there is another paragraph, what will be talked about? A. More questions for teenagers. B. The ways to deal with common questions. C. The relationship between you and your parents. D. Other questions in your new life. 根据最后一段“How do you decide whether you should follow the wishes of your parents, or your own?Which career is the most suitable to you and your background?” B 11. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Life isn’t easy for most people. B. A new chapter of your life. C. Many difficulties make your life harder. D. Parents are not the ones that you can depend on. 根据第二段“Not only do you have the stress and worry of schoolwork to deal with, you also have many problems of daily life to face.” B D This morning it was harder for me to get out of bed than usual. Usually, I have nightmares(噩梦)because of the terrible movies I watched the night before, and sometimes spicy(辛辣的)food makes me feel uncomfortable in sleeping. However, last night I turned all night because my anxiety was at an all-time high. I kept thinking about what my first day of high school would be like. What should I wear? What should I put in my schoolbag? I finally fell asleep around 5:45 and my alarm started going off at 6. I couldn’t let those thoughts cloud my mind. I had to prepare myself for one of the most important days of my life. I packed my things and headed out of the door. My first class wasn’t too bad. I listened to my English teacher discuss the importance of themes, but otherwise, it was a pretty easy-going class. During lunchtime, I had a pizza and an orange soda. I’m grateful for the food not tasting terrible so I wouldn’t keep thinking about that all day. I still didn’t manage to find any new friends to sit with, but I’m just happy I found a quiet place to stay. It would have been uncomfortable if I had to sit in a noisy classroom to eat lunch, or an empty hallway with some kids walking past and laughing. Once the last bell rang, I was eager to get home and tell Charlie, my childhood friend how my day went at a new school. I was just excited to speak to a familiar voice and share my feelings of the whole day. I wondered how his day went at his new school as well. I got on the same train line that I took to school and headed back home. Speaking to Charlie on the phone, I found out he made many new friends today. Once I got off the phone, I threw myself on the bed with a long sigh(叹气). Although I’d experience this again tomorrow, I’m glad I got through my first day at school. I can still remember the first day of the summer camp. I came to my bedroom by myself. When I opened the door, I saw a girl with short hair sitting in a chair with a book in her hands. Her name was Lily. When we said hello to each other, another girl came in. Her name was Rose. She was so outgoing and humorous that both Lily and I couldn’t help laughing. Then we studied and had meals together, and became good friends. I will remember these precious moments forever, no matter how far we will be away in the future. Once in a school, about 50 students from different junior high schools formed a new high school class. The class was made up of active and outstanding young students but the problem was that they wouldn’t share information to solve learning problems with each other and it was a headache. For instance, each of them wanted to achieve good results, but they did not want to let others know their learning progress and their own advantages, nor did they want to expose their weaknesses. So one day, Michelle, headmaster of the class, invited them to an event. In this event, there were several fun activities organized for everyone. For one of the activities, Michelle brought the class into a classroom which had 50 desks and envelopes of the same quantity with names on them. The students found their own envelopes and made them in the corresponding positions. Everyone was excited and was wondering what kind of activity it would be. Michelle took a few minutes to say, “Each of you picks up the envelope in front of you and solves the problems in it by yourself. Let me divide the class into several groups, and the list is shown on the blackboard. The group that solves all the problems first wins.” Everyone immediately picked up a pen and began to work on the problem. All of them were absorbed because they were competitive. Solving difficult problems is an attractive thing for those who love learning. However, even after 20 minutes only a few scattered(分散的)students were able to finish the problems. They didn’t give up and were thinking long and hard to solve the problems. Michelle came and told them that this round was over and everyone should go for next round of activity. For next round, Michelle told them to change their way of solving difficult problems. At the end of this round, Michelle came and saw the students talking and laughing happily. [参考范文] For next round, Michelle told them to change their way of solving difficult problems. He required everyone to find their own group members to discuss and solve the problems together. Initially, they felt reluctant to do so. Then, one group took the lead and began to debate heatedly. Gradually, other groups followed suit. Each member aired their own opinion and they made every effort to figure out the most suitable solutions to the problems, thus completing the task much more quickly than expected. Delightedly, they all had a sense of achievement. At the end of this round, Michelle came and saw the students talking and laughing happily. He felt satisfied with what they did. He said, “We can now understand that we are much more efficient when willing to share our views with other students. We are better problem solvers by working together, not individually.” Meanwhile, the students were touched and inspired, for they had been isolating themselves from other students. If it had not been for this event, they wouldn’t have realized that they should cooperate and cultivate team spirit to achieve their goals.
