Perhaps my favorite place during my trip to Guangxi was the Longji Rice Terraces in Longsheng. I’ve seen rice terraces elsewhere in Asia, but nothing compared with the beauty of the Longji Rice Terraces. To go to Guangxi and skip (略过) these rice terraces would be a loss.
These over 600-year-old terraces are still very much in use and feed the local Yao and Zhuang communities; you can find many guesthouses throughout the various rice terraces, and while accommodations (住宿) are very basic, I would strongly suggest spending a night in the peaceful terraces, surrounded by nothing but rice.
My friends and I had arrived in Guangxi on harvest (收获) day and we were told by our local guide it was too late to see Longji in its autumnal beauty. But we were super lucky because the 2017 harvest had been delayed (推迟), and when we arrived in Longsheng a couple of days later, it was the last day before the harvest began. It’s quite risky to time your visit this way, but it is amazing to see the Longji Rice Terraces both before harvest and after, when it takes on a completely new character.
The two main terraced areas are the Ping’an Terraced Fields and the Jinkeng Terraced Fields. The former is home to the local Zhuang People and has more visitors as it’s easier to reach. Jinkeng, on the other hand, is less visited. The Red Yao people live here, and should you need a hand with your suitcase, their women are happy to help you. We chose Jinkeng because it’s home to the highest point of the Longji Rice Terraces. The viewpoint (视角) is nearly 4,000 feet high. We had to go up there as our hotel was up there, but you should anyway as it’s the most wonderful viewpoint.
The Longji Rice Terraces are supposed to be beautiful in the spring and summer as well, though I much prefer its autumnal beauty. Winter, I’d skip, as it was already cold enough at night in October, but I’d return and visit again in the spring or summer.
56. What purpose does the first paragraph serve?
A. To provide an interesting example.
B. To bring up the topic.
C To discuss the reasons of the Longji Rice Terraces’ popularity.
D. To provide ways to visit Longji Rice Terraces.
57. What is the author’s advice for people visiting the Longji Rice Terraces?
A. Staying a night at a guesthouse among the terraces.
B. Going to the local Yao and Zhuang communities.
C. Choosing good accommodations.
D. Eating the local rice.
58. Why did the author feel very lucky when he arrived in Longsheng?
A. He could admire the terraces’ autumnal beauty. B. He found a time-saving way to the terraces.
C. He came across one of his friends. D. He had a professional local guide.
59. What made the author choose the Jinkeng Terraced Fields?
A. The affordable hotel. B. The friendly people.
C. The great viewpoint. D. The light traffic.
60. Where can the text be found?
A. In a short novel. B. In a news report. C. In a history book. D. In a travel magazine.
C
One afternoon in 2013, something on the Internet caught my eye: a tiny hedgehog (刺猬) held by a big hand. The post read: “HELP! My hedgehog abandoned (抛弃) her two babies, and I cannot raise both of them because I have to go to school full-time. Good home with experience needed as soon as possible!”
I had no experience with baby hedgehogs. I was an animal person through and through and had raised cats, dogs, birds, and guines pigs. But this tiny animal was new to me, and it touched me that he was abandoned, that maybe I could love him and be the best mom for him.
I wrote the most heartfelt email I could. That was how I found my Louie. True to my word, he was my baby. Louie didn’t know he was a hedgehog. He never curled (蜷缩) into a ball, and he liked my two cats, no fear. The cats, however, were afraid of him, as he often moved into the room, running after the cats and blocking my way.
By the time he reached old age, Louie had only three feet. However, he still managed to climb the stairs to visit other animals. He helped me realize my dream of hedgehog photography, a hobby that began during childhood with cats and dollhouses. I love showing off his modeling.
Life has meaning because of the purpose we have. Louie needed a good home and mom, and in return, I got to be a good mother and be needed. Hedgehogs require great amounts of patience, trust, and knowledge — but the payoff (回报) is pretty great.
61. The author got Louie from ______.
A. a pet shop
B. a family friend
C. a hedgehog owner
D. a hedgehog rescue center
62. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Why the author decided to keep Louie.
B. When the author began to keep Louie.
C. What deep feelings the author and Louie had.
D. How Louie changed the author’s life.
63. How did Louie seem to feel at the author’s home?
A. Frightened. B. Relaxed. C. Lonely. D. Tired.
64. What can we learn about Louie from paragraph 4?
A. He disliked climbing stairs.
B. He enjoyed being left alone.
C. He always refused to be in photos.
D. He was active despite his difficulty in moving.
65. What does the author say about raising Louie?
A. It was easier than expected.
B. It gave her a sense of safety.
C. It made her lose her patience.
D. It was satisfying and meaningful.
What is one of the best parts of traveling abroad? It’s the food , of course! Eating different foods native to a country, authentically (地道地) prepared by locals, is special. Trying these native foods will widen what you know about a country’s cuisine. I discovered that this is true for Chinese food. Chinese food in China is much more diverse and rich in tastes and spices (香料) than I had ever imagined before my travels.
Before traveling to China, I was a little worried about whether I would really enjoy the food or not. I was not sure what types of food I would be trying, but I have always enjoyed eating Chinese food in Massachusetts. However, I was only used to the spring rolls and Gong Bao Chicken of American Chinese cuisine.
Don’t get me wrong. I still love these dishes from my local Chinese restaurants! However, I did not realize how much variety of food there actually was to try in China and the cultural differences that I would learn to understand during my time abroad.
In my first few days, I fell in love with one of Beijing’s most famous dishes called Peking duck. Some of my friends had told me that we were going to one of the best Peking duck restaurants in Beijing, and they were not wrong! The Peking duck we ate surprised us, with thin, crisp (酥脆的) skin on the outside, delicious duck meat on the inside and various tasty sauces.
As I began trying new foods like Guilin mifen (rice noodles), I started to love these foods that I had never tried before in my life. While I was in Chengdu, I even learned about the ingredients (原料) of an authentic “huo guo”(hot pot).
After my time abroad in China, I realized how much I enjoyed eating and trying new foods. I also soon realized that the Chinese food here in America is different from that actually in China.

It took us two hours to finish the job.
It is impossible for us to get there on time.
It is very kind of you to help us.
He managed to escape from the fire.
I find it hard to get along with him.(it 作形式宾语)
注:下列动词通常用不定式作宾语:want, try, hope, wish, need, forget, know, promise, refuse, help, decide, begin, start, learn, agree, choose, get等。
I don’t know what to do next / how to do it next.
I can’t decide when to go there.
I find it necessary to learn a foreign language.
He warned me to be careful.
I want you to speak to Tom.
What makes you think so?
注:可以用动词不定式作宾补的动词有:ask, tell, order, want, get, would like, like, advise, invite, allow, help, wish, warn, expect, would prefer, encourage等。
We consider Tom to be one of the best students in our class.
The book is believed to be useful.(被动语态)
(3) There +不定式。
例如:We didn’t expect there to be so many people there.
注意:有些动词需用 as 短语作补语,像regard, think, believe, take, consider。例如:
We regard Eric as our best teacher.
Mary took him as her father.
(4) 在动词feel(一感), hear, listen to(二听), have, let, make(三让), notice, see, watch, observe, look at(五看)(即:五看三使两听一感觉)等后面的补足语中,不定式不带to,但变为被动语态后,必须带to。例如:
They saw the boy fall off the tree
The boy was seen to fall off the tree.
I often help him (to) clean the room.
I helped him (to) find his things.
I have a lot of work to do.(动宾关系)
He is looking for a room to live in.(动状关系)
He is the first person to think of the idea.(主谓关系)
He has got a chance to go abroad.(同位关系)
Do you have anything else to say?
I need a pen to write with. (I will write with a pen.)
I have a little baby to look after. (I must look after the little baby.)
5. 作状语
作状语,表示目的、结果、原因等,有时还有一些固定搭配的不定式短语,如in order to, so as to, so…as to, such…as to, …enough to, too…to等。
(1)作目的状语,just to, only to(仅仅为了), in order to, so as to, so(such)…as to…(如此……
例如:He ran so fast as to catch the first bus.
He hurried to the post office only to find it was closed.
We were very excited to hear the news.
To turn to the left, you could find a post office.
The question is how to put it into practice.
My question is when to leave.
His dream is to be a doctor.
To see is to believe. (="Seeing" is believing. )
He seems to know this.
I hope to see you again.
I’m sorry to have given you so much trouble.
He seems to have caught a cold.
He seems to be eating something.
She is known to have been working on the problem for many years.
He was seen to enter the hall.
He asked to be sent to work in Xizang.
30. ______ you arrive early, you won’t get a good seat.

A. If如果;B.

D It was satisfying and meaningful.
C 62. A 63. B 64. D 65. D

My hedgehog abandoned (抛弃) her two babies, and I cannot raise both of them because I have to go to school full-time. Good home with experience needed as soon as possible!”

Wish you a good time!

Li Hua
Dear Peter,
In your last email, you asked me what should be paid attention to when you are going for dinner at your Chinese teacher’s, and here is my advice.
Firstly, it’s important that you should arrive on time or half an hour earlier at most than the appointed time. Secondly, there is no need for you to take expensive gifts. If your teacher has a young child, I suggest you buy a toy. If not, just buy some fruit or drinks. As for table manners, the best way is to follow the host, and just be relaxed and natural. Lastly, it’s thought to be polite to help the host clean the table after dinner, and before you leave, remember to say thank you.
Wish you a good time!
Yours truly,
Li Hua
