There’s something pretty scary about diving into the pitch-black abyss (深谷), towards the mysteries at the centre of the Earth. But humans have been going underground — mining, caving, living and the like. All over the world you’ll find all manner of superb underground phenomena. Here are our favourites. 1. Salina Turda, Romania A Transylvanian underground theme park sounds kind of like something out of ScoobyDoo. But it actually exists—and isn’t frightening at all. Built deep below the Earth’s surface in a salt mine, Salina Turda features attractions like a panoramic (全景的) wheel, mini-golf, bowling, table tennis and even boating on a mine lake. 2. Derinkuyu, Turkey The underground city at Derinkuyu, in Turkey’s Cappadocia region, dates back thousands of years. It’s the deepest of its kind in the region, a web of winding passages over eight levels, reaching a depth of 85 metres. Living underground allowed the citizens of Derinkuyu to avoid extreme temperatures and more easily fight against invaders. Though not inhabited today, the site features the remains of schools, shops and churches. 3. Ajanta Caves, India Considering that they’re cut deep into a rock face, the 30 or so caves of Ajanta are surprisingly well lit. All that light makes it much easier to admire this remarkable series of Buddhist temples and monuments (纪念碑) that date from the first and second centuries BC. They contain some of the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian wall-painting. 4. Thrihnukagigur, Iceland Sometimes climbing up to a volcano crater (火山口) or viewing it from afar just isn’t enough. Some people need to go that step further and adventure inside a volcano. You can do exactly that at Thrihnukagigur in Iceland. A lift takes visitors 700 feet down into the volcano’s magma chamber (岩浆室). We’re assured that Thrihnukagigur is safely dormant (休眠的), having not erupted in 4,000 years, but even so, it takes a certain kind of thrill-seeker to actively want to get up close and personal with a volcano. Click www.timeout.com/arts-and-culture for more. 1. Which of the following most probably attracts adventurers? A. Salina Turda, Romania. B. Derinkuyu, Turkey. C. Ajanta Caves, India. D. Thrihnukagigur, Iceland. 2. What do Derinkuyu and Ajanta Caves have in common? A. They both have a long history. B. They are of the same depth. C. They share the same features. D. They both contain wall-paintings. 3. Where is the text probably taken from? A. A textbook. B. A magazine. C. A website. D. A newspaper. D 2. A 3. 根据Thrihnukagigur, Iceland中“We’re assured that Thrihnukagigur is safely dormant (休眠的), having not erupted in 4,000 years, but even so, it takes a certain kind of thrill-seeker to actively want to get up close and personal with a volcano. (我们确信斯瑞努卡基古火山处于安全休眠状态,已经有4000年没有喷发了,但即便如此,也需要某些寻求刺激的人主动想要近距离接触火山)”可知,冰岛的斯瑞努卡基古火山最有可能吸引冒险者。故选D项。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据Derinkuyu, Turkey中“The underground city at Derinkuyu, in Turkey’s Cappadocia region, dates back thousands of years. (位于土耳其卡帕多西亚地区的德林库尤地下城可以追溯到几千年前)”和Ajanta Caves, India中“All that light makes it much easier to admire this remarkable series of Buddhist temples and monuments (纪念碑) that date from the first and second centuries BC. (所有的光线使人们更容易欣赏这一系列可追溯到公元前一世纪和公元前二世纪的佛教寺庙和纪念碑)”可知,这两处洞穴的共同之处在于都有悠久的历史。故选A项。 根据最后一段“Click www.timeout.com/arts-and-culture for more. (点击www.timeout.com/arts-and-culture了解更多)”可知,文末提供了解更多的网址链接。由此可知,文章应该出自网页。故选C项。 B A fisherman in northern Cambodia hooked what researchers say is the world’s largest freshwater fish — a giant stingray (黄貂鱼) that scientists know relatively little about. The fisherman, 42, caught the 300-kilogram fish, which measured about four meters in length, near a remote island on the Mekong River in the Stung Treng area. A team of scientists from the Wonders of Mekong research project helped tag (给…装标签), measure and weigh the fish before it was released back into the river. The research group believes it was healthy when released and expects it to survive. The tag—which emits an acoustic (声音的) signal — will allow researchers to track the fish’s movements and they hope, learn more about its species’ behavior in the Mekong. The catch “highlights how little we know about a lot of these giant freshwater fish,” said Zeb Hogan, a fish biologist at the University of Nevada. “You have a fish that’s now the record holder for the world’s largest freshwater fish, and we know little about it.” The fisherman, Moul Thun, caught the giant stingray with a hook and line on the evening of June 13, and then contacted researchers the next morning. Researchers with the Wonders of Mekong were already in northern Cambodia to install underwater receivers as part of a project to track migratory fish in the river. “It’s a particularly healthy stretch of the river with a lot of deep pools — pools up to 90 meters deep,” said Hogan, who is also the host of National Geographic’s “Monster Fish” television series. “We started focusing on this area as a stretch of river that’s particularly important for biodiversity and fisheries, and as a last refuge (避难所) for these big species.” For several months, the research group has been in contact with local fishermen, asking them to get in touch if they landed a significant catch. The group has helped with two other large giant freshwater stingray releases in recent months. The fisherman who caught the record fish was paid market price for his catch. “It works because the fish is not a highly prized food fish,” Hogan said. Hogan said little is known about the giant freshwater stingray. The creature has a mouth about “the size of a banana” with no teeth, but with “gripping pads” used to crush (压碎) prey. “They’re on the bottom finding shrimps, mollusks and small fish. They can suck them up with this banana-shaped mouth and crush them,” he said. 4. What did the scientists use the tag to do? A. To enable the freshwater fish to survive. B. To record the sound of the freshwater fish. C. To be informed of the freshwater fish’s health. D. To help them know more about the freshwater fish. 5. What is Zeb Hogan’s tone in paragraph 4? A. Optimistic. B. Regretful. C. Indifferent. D. Proud. 6. What does Hogan say about the deep pools? A. Their depth can hardly be measured. B. They are too deep to explore in detail. C. There is a special TV show about them. D. They are likely home to big species. 7. What do researchers expect fishermen to do? A. To discover highly prized food fish. B. To sell their big catch at a lower price. C. To report their unusual catch in time. D. To show respect for the significant catch. D 5. B 6. D 7. 根据第三段“The tag—which emits an acoustic (声音的) signal — will allow researchers to track the fish’s movements and they hope, learn more about its species’ behavior in the Mekong.”(这个发出声学信号的标签将使研究人员能够追踪这种鱼的运动,他们希望能更多地了解其物种在湄公河的行为)可知,科学家们用标签是为了帮助他们更多地了解淡水鱼。 根据第四段“The catch “highlights how little we know about a lot of these giant freshwater fish,” said Zeb Hogan, a fish biologist at the University of Nevada. “You have a fish that’s now the record holder for the world’s largest freshwater fish, and we know little about it.””(内华达大学的鱼类生物学家泽布·霍根说,这次捕获“突显了我们对这些巨型淡水鱼知之甚少”。“你有一条鱼现在是世界上最大淡水鱼的记录保持者,而我们对此知之甚少。”)可知,生物学家泽布·霍根认为他们对巨型淡水鱼知之甚少,说明他的态度是遗憾的。故选B项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第七段““We started focusing on this area as a stretch of river that’s particularly important for biodiversity and fisheries, and as a last refuge (避难所) for these big species.””(“我们开始将重点放在这一地区,将其作为一段对生物多样性和渔业特别重要的河流,以及这些大型物种的最后避难所。”) 根据第八段“For several months, the research group has been in contact with local fishermen, asking them to get in touch if they landed a significant catch.”(几个月来,该研究小组一直与当地渔民保持联系,要求他们在捕捞到大量渔获时与他们取得联系)可知,研究者希望渔民及时报告他们的异常捕获。故选C项。 C Egypt is home to more than 100 pyramids, including the 4,500-year-old iconic (圣像的) Giza Pyramid, which is the last-standing ancient wonder of the world. Giza is actually made up of three pyramids, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. Now, scientists are using High Energy Physics (HEP) to scan the Khufu structure at Giza. The new technology uses cosmic ray muons (宇宙射线介子) to scan deeper into the pyramid than has ever been seen before, and then map its internal structure. What we see now is only the core structure of the Great Pyramid. Although the pyramid has been studied closely for centuries, there are two mysterious blanks that have kept archacologists (考古学家) puzzled. One void (空间) is around 98 feet long and 20 feet high and could be one large space or several rooms, according to previous scans of the pyramid, while the other is much smaller, just beyond the north face of the pyramid. Archaeologists are not sure what either void functioned as; the most exciting possibility is that the larger space is the hidden burial chamber of Khufu, who was in power from around 2,551 BC to 2,528 BC. The voids were discovered in 2017 when a project named Scan Pyramids ran a series of scans that analyzed the cosmic particles that fall to Earth (muons) to detect spaces within the structure. Muons are negatively charged elementary particles that form when cosmic rays collide (碰撞) with the Earth’s atmosphere. They are useful because they behave differently when interacting with stone, or water, versus air. “We plan to field a telescope system that has upwards of 100 times the sensitivity of the equipment that has recently been used at the Great Pyramid,” a team of scientists wrote in a preprint paper—yet to be reviewed by other scientists. “Since the detectors that are proposed are very large, they cannot be placed inside the pyramid, therefore our approach is to put them outside and move them along the base. In this way, we can collect muons from all angles in order to build up the required data set,” the team wrote in the paper. 8. What is the function of paragraph 1? A. To describe an ancient wonder. B. To present the new technology. C. To highlight the Giza Pyramid. D. To introduce background information. 9. What do we know about the new technology? A. It moves above the base and builds up data. B. It scans the side of the pyramid and collects muons. C. It detects the outside of the pyramid and collects data. D. It looks into the pyramid and records the structure inside. 10. What does the underline word “they” refer to in paragraph 5? A. Comic rays. B. Muons. C. Scans. D. Elementary particles. 11. What is this passage mainly about? A. Putting the detectors outside to collect data. B. Discovering the voids using new technology. C. Holding a telescope system to study the pyramid. D. Uncovering the internal secret of pyramid using HEP. D 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段“Egypt is home to more than 100 pyramids, including the 4,500-year-old iconic (圣像的) Giza Pyramid, which is the last-standing ancient wonder of the world.(埃及有100多座金字塔,其中包括有4500年历史的标志性建筑吉萨金字塔,它是世界上现存的古代奇迹。)”和第二段中“Now, scientists are using High Energy Physics (HEP) to scan the Khufu structure at Giza. The new technology uses cosmic ray muons (宇宙射线介子) to scan deeper into the pyramid than has ever been seen before, and then map its internal structure.(现在,科学家们正在使用高能物理扫描吉萨的胡夫结构。这项新技术使用宇宙射线介子,比以往任何时候都更深入地扫描金字塔,然后绘制其内部结构。)”可知,第一段介绍了吉萨金字塔是提供背景信息,进而引出下文中新的金字塔研究技术。故选D。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“The new technology uses cosmic ray muons (宇宙射线介子) to scan deeper into the pyramid than has ever been seen before, and then map its internal structure.(这项新技术使用宇宙射线介子,比以往任何时候都更深入地扫描金字塔,然后绘制其内部结构。)” 根据第五段中“Muons are negatively charged elementary particles that form when cosmic rays collide (碰撞) with the Earth’s atmosphere. They are useful because they behave differently when interacting with stone, or water, versus air.(宇宙射线介子是带负电荷的基本粒子,当宇宙射线与地球大气层碰撞时形成。它们是有用的,因为它们在与石头、水和空气相互作用时表现不同。)”和指代关系可推知,“They”指代上文中提到的“Muons”,即宇宙射线介子。故选B。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“Now, scientists are using High Energy Physics (HEP) to scan the Khufu structure at Giza. The new technology uses cosmic ray muons (宇宙射线介子) to scan deeper into the pyramid than has ever been seen before, and then map its internal structure.(现在,科学家们正在使用高能物理扫描吉萨的胡夫结构。这项新技术使用宇宙射线介子,比以往任何时候都更深入地扫描金字塔,然后绘制其内部结构。)”可推知,本文介绍了使用高能物理来揭示金字塔内部结构的新技术,所以“Uncovering the internal secret of pyramid using HEP.(利用HEP揭示金字塔的内部秘密。)” D。 D From train tickets to doctor’s appointments, there’s a growing expectation that consumers should include technology in everyday life. We take it for granted that technology brings us closer and improve our access to essential products and services. But people who can’t or don’t want to engage with the latest technology are being left behind. Technology should not be allowed to drive people to the side of their own lives, as many facts suggest is increasingly the case. For example, there have been reports that some elderly people no longer drive to their local park, because they cannot download the parking app required. Evidently, age is one big predictor of digital exclusion (排斥). Only 47% of those aged 75 and over use the Internet regularly. Out of the four million who have never used the Internet in the UK, only 300,000 people are under 55. But older people aren’t the only ones feeling shut out. Concerns about privacy can stop people using technology as well. A survey into consumers’ trust in business showed no industry reached a trust rating of 50% for data protection. Some people view “forced” digitalization as a symbol of consumer culture and limit their contact with it; also, many people take a “less is more” approach to technology simply because they feel it offers a more meaningful existence. They all belong to a population group that often slips people’s mind in related discussions. No one could discount, however, one factor-poverty. Some regions, particularly rural ones, even struggle for phone signals. The UK phone network’s plans for a digital switchover could cut off people who rely on their landlines. The solution is not simply to give devices to those without smart technology. While there’s a need to provide affordable Internet access and technology, we need to recognize diversity in society. Services should provide non-digital selections that reflect equality. Local councils, healthcare providers and businesses should understand more about the diversity of consumers and develop services that meet the needs of all people. After all, access to and inclusion in society is a human right. 12. Why is the example of the elderly mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. To provide a proof. B. To introduce a concept. C. To make a comparison. D. To confirm a prediction. 13. According to the passage, which of the following factors CAN’T account for digital exclusion? A. Age. B. Privacy. C. Gender. D. Attitude. 14. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph? A. Inquiring opinions from diverse consumers. B. Slowing the pace of the technological shift. C. Offering services with online and offline options. D. Bettering access to the Internet and technology. 15. Which can be the best title for the text? A. Life sees two-edged effect from digitalization B. Technology is excluding a significant minority C. Social barriers result from technological shifts D. Digital divide is becoming increasingly serious 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. C 15. 根据第二段“Technology should not be allowed to drive people to the side of their own lives, as many facts suggest is increasingly the case. For example, there have been reports that some elderly people no longer drive to their local park, because they cannot download the parking app required.”(不应允许技术让人们放弃自己的生活,正如许多事实所表明的那样,情况越来越严重。 故选A项。 根据第二段“Evidently, age is one big predictor of digital exclusion.”(显然,年龄是数字排斥的一个重要预测因素)、第三段“Concerns about privacy can stop people using technology as well.”(对隐私的担忧也会阻止人们使用技术)及第三段“Some people view “forced” digitalization as a symbol of consumer culture and limit their contact with it; also, many people take a “less is more” approach to technology simply because they feel it offers a more meaningful existence.”(一些人将“被迫”数字化视为消费文化的象征,并限制了他们与之的接触;此外,许多人对技术采取“少即是多”的态度,仅仅是因为他们觉得它提供了一种更有意义的存在)可知,文章提出了解释数字排斥现象的三个因素为年龄、隐私和态度,C项“性别”没有提到。 根据最后一段“While there’s a need to provide affordable Internet access and technology, we need to recognize diversity in society. Services should provide non-digital selections that reflect equality.”(虽然需要提供负担得起的互联网接入和技术,但我们需要认识到社会的多样性。 通读全文,并根据第一段“We take it for granted that technology brings us closer and improve our access to essential products and services. But people who can’t or don’t want to engage with the latest technology are being left behind.”(我们理所当然地认为,技术拉近了我们距离,改善了我们获得基本产品和服务的机会。 Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and tackle items from a to do list that gets neglected during the work week. B A fisherman in northern Cambodia hooked what researchers say is the world’s largest freshwater fish — a giant stingray (黄貂鱼) that scientists know relatively little about. B To sell their big catch at a lower price. C. To report their unusual catch in time. D. To show respect for the significant catch. C Egypt is home to more than 100 pyramids, including the 4,500-year-old iconic (圣像) Giza Pyramid, which is the last-standing ancient wonder of the world. D From train tickets to doctor’s appointments, there’s a growing expectation that consumers should include technology in everyday life. While there’s a need to provide affordable Internet access and technology we need to recognize diversity in society. Digital divide is becoming increasingly serious Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and tackle items from a to do list that gets neglected during the work week.
