The topic of China’s “slash youth” has fueled heated debate on social media recently, drawing attention to the diverse pursuits of the younger generation.
The s lash youth, which could also be called slashers or slash-generation — means those who refuse to be defined or bound by just one personal identity. They are keen to present themselves as multiple and sometimes different identities, such as a nurse and model, a teacher and stand-up comedian, and an engineer and band player. Rather than material comforts, they pursue meaningful achievement.
A diverse career can enable them to develop new experiences and talents as well as social and professional networks, leading to greater flexibility in life and work, recognition and satisfaction.
A study on “slash youth” published in the China Youth Research magazine analyzes the background of this phenomenon: with part of modern society’s structured organization and stability norms (规范) broken, flexible labor markets and structural unemployment has appeared, removing the sense of job security of the young people in employment. Young people also face the problem of self-realization, including the sense of powerlessness, lost sense of value and lack of self-identity in the profession, which forces them to re-find the meaning of work.
“The ‘slash life’ shows that our society is becoming more and more diversified and inclusive, and it welcomes everyone’s self-fulfillment,” said Shi Yanrong, an associate researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Young people no longer have to rely on work and money for their sense of self-worth. They tend to create their own identities.” The researcher added that against the background that people have multiple interests and are willing to pay for these interests nowadays, the “slash life” of the youth would drive the growth of a new economy, just as animation culture affected the market.
24.What do we know about the slash youth?
A.They tend to undertake multiple careers.
B.They are keen to pursue material comforts.
C.They enjoy posting themselves on social media.
D.They can easily adjust themselves to challenges in life.
25.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The importance of flexible labor markets. B.Reasons for the appearance of slash youth.
C.The pursuit of the youth in their profession. D.Causes of losing self-identity among the youth.
26.What does Shi Yanrong think of the slash life?
A.It boosts the rise of a new economy. B.It helps increase people’s independence.
C.It inspires young people’s creativity at work. D.It enables young people to earn high incomes.
27.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To provide career guidance. B.To analyze a cultural difference.
C.To introduce a social phenomenon. D.To share a unique life experience.

Two and a half months before the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, and almost six months before it enters its peak (高峰), weathermen are already predicting (预测) that it could be particularly active.
Officially, hurricane season begins from June 1 and runs through November. One reason is that sea surface temperatures in the tropical (热带的) Atlantic are already at record highs.
Meanwhile, another significant potential factor in this year’s hurricane season is taking shape thousands of miles away in the Pacific. Over periods ranging from three to seven years, the waters of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean warm and cool in turn as a result of a repeating climate pattern called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). El Niño makes Atlantic hurricanes less likely to form but La Niña does.
During the 2023 season, ENSO was in an El Niño period. However, by the time the 2024 season starts, it will have changed into a “neutral(中立)” period, but that by the peak months, it is likely to have changed fully into a La Niña.
“How quickly that change occurs can affect everything as well,” says DaSilva, a lead hurricane weatherman. “There’s a lag time. So, while we expect the change to occur in mid-summer, it may not be until late summer or fall where we really see those effects across the Atlantic basin.” As a result, he says, this year’s hurricane season could remain particularly active deep into November.
Of course, no report can predict when individual storms will come or the paths they will take, but DaSilva warns that those who live in areas likely to suffer hurricanes, especially around the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, should prepare. “If a tropical storm system comes into this area, it could rapidly strengthen, potentially close to land,” he also warns. “And that’s why people need to be careful and have their hurricane plans ready. Because any system with these kinds of conditions can explode very quickly. That’s what we’re concerned about.”
28.What is the function of Paragraph 1?
A.To give advice. B.To explain the season.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To inform a weather report.
29.What is a reason for this year’s hurricane season?
A.The hurricane season has entered its peak.
B.A repeating climate has changed weather in summer.
C.The sea surface temperatures are the highest of all time.
D.El Niño makes Atlantic hurricanes more likely to form.
30.What do the underlined words “a lag time” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.A time delay. B.A time in a zone.
C.A time waste. D.A time in advance.
31.What does DaSilva agree with about this year’s hurricane season?
A.It can be exactly predicted ahead of time.
B.People needn’t worry about hurricane season.
C.It may be eventually controlled by weathermen.
D.People can’t be more careful about hurricane season.

Playing a musical instrument throughout your life protects your hearing in old age, a Canadian study suggests. The study, published in Psychology and Aging, carried out hearing tests on 74 adult musicians and 89 non-musicians. It found a 70-year-old musician’s hearing was as good as that of a 50-year-old who did not play.
Hearing normally declines as people age. By 60, 10-30%of people have moderate hearing loss. By 80, that goes up to as many as 60%. Problems are particularly seen in the central auditory (听觉的) processing system, which is associated with understanding speech, especially when there is background noise.
Previous studies have shown musicians have better hearing than non-players. But this research, by a team at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto, looked at adults of all ages — from 18 to 91 — to see how people were affected as they aged. They carried out hearing tests on 74 amateur and professional musicians (who had played since the age of 16, were still practising and had been given formal music lessons) and 89 non-musicians (who had never played an instrument). Musicians were significantly better at picking out speech against noise.
The researchers suggest that lifelong musicianship reduces age-related changes in the brain, probably due to musicians using their auditory systems at a high level on a regular basis.
The head of biomedical research at Action on Hearing Loss, Dr. Ralph Holme, said: “While this study suggests that musicians might be more able to cope with the consequences of hearing loss, it is far better to reduce damage in the first place by using appropriate ear protection. We have always campaigned for everyone who plays a musical instrument or listens to loud music to wear hearing protection, like earplugs, which reduce the risk of damaging your hearing permanently.”
32.What can we get from the Canadian study?
A.It tested the hearing of 162 people.
B.The finding of the study wasn’t published publicly.
C.Playing a musical instrument may do good to hearing.
D.Musicians were as good at picking out speech against noise as non-musicians.
33.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.A person aged 80 will lose 30%hearing.
B.A person aged above 60 must have bad hearing .
C.People have fewer problems with background noise.
D.People’s hearing usually becomes worse when they get older.
34.Why don’t musicians change much in their brain as they age?
A.They like to take more exercise.
B.They use their hearing more and regularly.
C.They don’t expose themselves to background noise.
D.They pay more attention to protecting their hearing.
35.How can we deal with hearing loss according to Dr. Ralph Holme?
A.Get help from musicians. B.Listen to loud music less.
C.Protect hearing properly. D.Play a musical instrument more.

If you are always successful, you may not learn much. 36 Scientists have found that being wrong 15 percent of the time is the secret to learning new things. Although nobody likes to fail, scientists have long suspected that people learnt better when they were challenged to learn something just outside of their existing knowledge.
Make a task too hard and participants will give up without learning any new skills, but if it is too easy, they will also not pick up anything useful. 37 To find out where the “sweet spot” lies, researchers at the University of Arizona conducted a series of machine-learning experiments in which they taught computers simple tasks, such as picking whether a number was odd (奇数的) or even (偶数的). 38
The scientists have named it “The 85 percent rule” and say it could help teachers adapt their classes to the right level. If the teachers give really easy examples, you get 100 percent right all the time. 39 If they give really hard examples, you still won’t learn anything new. Only when you are at this “sweet spot” can you get the most information from each particular example.
40 You shouldn’t be disappointed if you aren’t 100% right all the time. If you are taking classes that are too easy, then you aren’t probably getting as much out of a class as someone who’s struggling but managing to keep up.
A.Accept challenges bravely.
B.Then there’s nothing left to learn.
C.The more difficult the task, the better.
D.In this way, you can maximize your learning.
E.But that “sweet spot” has always been unknown.
F.Some studies have shown that failure is not a bad thing.
G.They found that when the error rate was 15 percent, the computers learnt fastest.

I usually start my day with a coffee from TODAY. Every morning a smiling young man stands at the cashier’s area, with his colorful and funny-looking 41 . It seems that he works happily every day.
It was rainy last Monday. When I rushed to the store, I was wet all over, which made me 42 . Just then, the young man greeted me with a big smile and 43 me, which drove away my depression (沮丧). What 44 me was that he always seems happy. At first I thought he was just pretending to smile, making the best of a 45 situation. 46 , he couldn’t possibly enjoy working at a store, right?
Later I recognized from our conversation that I had 47 the most important part of his words originally: He does enjoy his job, and that is why he seems so happy. My life doesn’t always look 48 like what I want it to be. I spend weekends 49 alone in my living room when I’d rather work in a beachside office with my friends. I drive an old Toyota when I’d 50 something that doesn’t have cracked windows. But the world doesn’t make any 51 if I have more money, a different space, a better job, or a nicer car. The wrapping paper is different, but the gift inside is 52 . The way I feel about myself, how often I choose to smile 53 because it feels good—neither of these things depends on my living situation as a writer. This guy shows me that you can be who you want to be, no matter 54 your situation looks like. Happiness is about how you treat the present situation, and how willing you are to enjoy simple 55 , even if things aren’t perfect.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
During a vacation one year, my mom and I left our home. We went on a two-week trip to the countryside where my mother had grown up. I was excited because I couldn’t wait to see my grandparents. The last time I had visited them was when I was only three years old. I also wished to go sightseeing, ride elephants, and do many more things there. They must be very wonderful.
With great wishes, we arrived at my grandparents’ house in the countryside. During the first several days, I stayed in their house for fun. But soon, I got bored. I wondered what adventures were in store for me. One morning I said to my mom, “I really want to go outside to play.” My mom replied, “Stephanie, today we’re going to a school. The children there are studying in poor conditions. I decided to use some of my own money to buy some school supplies (日用品) for them.” Hearing that, I was a bit unhappy. “We can go out and play another day. Today we need to spend a little time helping these poor children,” Mom added. I had no choice but to agree.
A few minutes later, my mom drove me to the school. On the way, she said, “We’d first visit the school to know what kind of things these children want most. Then we’ll try to buy them.” I thought to myself: what a vacation I am having! I come here to go sightseeing, not do charity (慈善)work.
When we reached the school, I just couldn’t believe my eyes. There was only one small building, which looked as if it were a hundred years old. There was no playground, no parking lot... It was so small; the school I went to back home was a million times bigger. How unlucky the children here were! We met a teacher in the school, and my mom told him the purpose of our visit. The teacher was very glad and thanked us.
Paragraph1:
Then the teacher guided us into a classroom.

W: Oh? What did you do while you were there?
M: Well, we visited the old castle on Saturday. I love history and the kids enjoyed exploring all the different rooms. And we visited the museum on Sunday. It’s so interesting. You can see what the town looked like in the past.
W: What did you do on Saturday evening?
M: I wanted to go to a football match, but there were no tickets. So we went to see a movie instead. The kids liked it, but I didn’t. It was boring, to be honest.
W: What did you do for food?
M: Helen likes trying new food different from Italian food. So we planned to go to a Thai restaurant. Helen enjoyed it, but the kids didn’t like the food, so we walked to a Chinese restaurant, further along the street.

M: Hi, I’m Chris from Florida. Last year, I moved to London, where I’m working for an American company. It’s been a big change, and there have been lots of things to get used to. For example, in the U.S. we drive on the right, while here in Britain I’ve had to get used to driving on the left. What else? Well the weather in Florida is usually great, so I’m used to lots of sunshine and I used to sunbathe a lot. In London it rains so much. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, and I always remember to take my umbrella with me... Food in England is different, too. In America, I used to eat a lot of Mexican food. Here in England, people love Indian food, so I’m getting used to the different tastes. At the company where I work, it’s quite different. I used to work from 9 a.m. till 11 p.m. I hated working so late. Here in England, I start at 8:30 a.m., but finish at 5 p.m. On Friday evening English people like to go to the club with friends, but in AmericaI used to go to the gym. I love sports. Is there anything else? Some of the words are different. The subway is called the “underground” in London, and British people call the fall “autumn”.
