As most people would be, I was very nervous about studying abroad in a foreign country. Luckily, Ireland is English-speaking and any contact with program advisors, housing, or the University was nothing short of excellent.
I chose to study abroad in Cork, Ireland. One of the greatest gifts Cork gave to me was a course I took at University College Cork. It was called Irish Folklore (民间传说) with Shane Lehane who was very nice. This lecture changed my world. I got to learn about the old fairy legends, unique Irish and Cork festivals and celebrations, traditions, and much about butter and potatoes. This class taught me so much about tradition and the importance of it. Although I met some difficulties due to the difference in cultural background, these didn’t stop me from moving forward.
Similar to Shane, the local people of Cork were very nice and they were what made the city so wonderful. Con and his family who ran the fruit and veg store that was by my apartment became my source of local information about Cork, Ireland, and all the people in it. They waved to me when they saw me walking along the road and those were moments that I felt most at home.
I could go on and on about how much I loved Cork and why, but to round it out, the live music was special. The Cork Jazz Festival was the most unique and exciting weekend in town, but every night and every weekend there was a band, singer, or guitar player somewhere in the City Centre. I have always enjoyed music, but it is clear to me that after my time in Cork wherever there is live music, I’m going to be there.
With its nature, sights, traditions, cities, towns, and coastlines, Ireland has so much to offer. I am glad I chose it.
4. What did the author learn from Shane Lehane’s course?
A. The power of public lectures. B. The value of tradition.
C Skills for independent living. D. Tips for personal communication.
5. What is the author’s impression of the local people of Cork?
A. They take their privacy very seriously. B. They are always busy making a living.
C. They are kind and welcome. D. They have a good head for business.
6. What does the author want to show about live music in Cork?
A. Live music is very popular in Cork.
B. Live music events are limited to special days.
C. The Cork Jazz Festival attracts a lot of foreigners.
D. The Cork Jazz Festival focuses on traditional Irish music.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author’s stay in Cork?
A. Challenging. B. Nervous. C. Meaningful. D. Peaceful.

Last Friday, a special event took place at the National Theater of Korea. A robot called EveR6 led an orchestra (管弦乐队)in a performance of Korean music. Robots have led orchestras in other countries, but this was the first time in Korea.
EveR 6 is a robot built by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology(KITECH). EveR 6 has joints (关节) in its neck, shoulders, elbows, and wrists. As a result, it can move its arms quickly and smoothly in many different directions. But EveR 6 doesn’t think on its own like some Artificial Intelligence(Al)programs. Instead, it has a limited group of movements that it has been trained to perform. EveR 6’s movements are based on movements “captured (捕捉)” from real human conductors.
In Friday’s performance, the National Orchestra of Korea presented a concert titled “Absence”. The concert included five different pieces of music. Two were conducted by EveR6, and two were conducted by So o-Yeoul Choi, who leads the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra. Both conductors worked together on the final piece.
Mr. Choi was impressed with the way EveR 6 moved. But the robot’s greatest weakness is that it can’t hear. “Some people think that conducting is just a combination of hand waving and keeping the beat,” says Mr. Choi. But a good conductor needs to listen to the orchestra so that he or she can correct and encourage the orchestra as it plays.
Mr. Choi said that once EveR 6 started, the musicians had “no choice but to follow its beats.” He said this created a situation where “the performers have to communicate with each other to follow the right beats.” Mr. Choi doesn’t think robots are likely to replace human conductors. However, he believes robots could be helpful in situations like practice sessions where the same thing needs to be repeated many times.
8. What can we learn about EveR 6?
A. It is trained by human conductors. B. It can wave its arms smoothly.
C. It has performed in Korea many times. D. It is more advanced than other Al programs.
9. What is the biggest limitation of EveR 6?
A. It has difficulty capturing humans’ movements.
B. It doesn’t have human-like facial expressions.
C. It cannot hear and respond to the orchestra.
D. It cannot beat time with its fingers.
10. Which can best describe EveR 6 being used in daily practice?
A. Useful. B. Unworkable. C. Time-saving. D. Professional.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Korean robot conducts orchestra
B. EveR 6 brings conducting a bright future
C. The war between robots and musicians is on
D. AI robots create music and perform it on stage
B 9. C 10. A 11. A

If you have a big test coming up or want to do well in class, studying is one of the best things you can do. Here are some tips on forming the best study habits so you can do your best in class.
Study in 1-hour blocks. ____12____ Set aside an hour for each of your subjects so you have time to review them completely. During each block, only focus on 1 subject at a time so you don’t get information mixed up between classes.
Plan regular breaks. Since studying takes up a lot of energy and brain power, it’s a good idea to schedule 5-10 minutes of relaxation every hour. ____13____ Listen to music, take a walk, or go get a snack to give yourself some space from your schoolwork.
____14____ Working with your classmates can help keep you motivated (有动力). Ask other students that you’re in class with if they want to review with you. Try quizzing (测验) each other on concepts (概念). ____15____ Try teaching other people in your study group the concepts you’re learning. That way, you’ll be able to learn easier and more effectively.
Rewrite your notes in your own words. Organizing your notes helps you remember information a lot easier. ____16____ Rewrite them on a separate page so all of the similar information is organized and easy to read.
A. Form a study group.
B. Stay organized and work somewhere quiet.
C. Avoid working through the breaks you’ve planned.
D. Find places that work best for you so you can focus.

G. Even if you took notes in class, the information may be all over the place.
E 13. C 14. A 15. F 16. G
根据空前标题句“Study in 1-hour blocks.(以1小时为单元进行学习)”可知本段的建议是要将学习时间进行以1小时为单位的划分,根据空后“Set aside an hour for each of your subjects so you have time to review them completely. During each block, only focus on 1 subject at a time so you don’t get information mixed up between classes.(为每个科目留出一个小时的时间,这样你就有时间彻底复习它们。在每节课上,一次只专注于一门课,这样你就不会在不同的课上混淆了信息。)”可知此处讲的是将学习时间进行以1小时为单位划分可以让自己更好地进行复习,空处承上启下,所以空处讲的应该是将学习时间缩短对于学习精力方面的好处,E项Keep your study time shorter so you don’t get worn out.(缩短你的学习时间,这样你就不会感到疲惫。)
以及空前“Since studying takes up a lot of energy and brain power, it’s a good idea to schedule 5-10 minutes of relaxation every hour.(因为学习需要大量的精力和脑力,所以每小时安排5-10分钟的放松时间是个好主意。)”可知因为学习需要大量的精力和脑力,所以设置定期的放松时间是个不错的主意,根据空后“Listen to music, take a walk, or go get a snack to give yourself some space from your schoolwork.(听听音乐,散个步,或者去吃点零食,让自己从功课中解脱出来。)” Avoid working through the breaks you’ve planned.(避免在你计划好的休息时间工作。)指出在计划好的休息时间里不要学习,承接上文,引出下文,而且C项中的the breaks you’ve planned照应标题句中的regular breaks以及空前的5-10 minutes of relaxation,符合上下文语境,故选C项。
根据空后“Working with your classmates can help keep you motivated (有动力). Ask other students that you’re in class with if they want to review with you.(和你的同学一起学习可以帮助你保持动力。问问班上的其他同学是否愿意和你一起复习。)”可知本段讲的是与同学一起学习的好处,所以标题句应该是建议组成学习小组,A项Form a study group.(组成学习小组。)指出本段的建议是组成学习小组,概括全段内容,符合上下文语境,故选A项。
【15题详解】
根据空前“Try quizzing (测验) each other on concepts (概念).(试着对彼此的概念进行测验)”指出在学习小组内彼此可以进行概念测试,根据空后“Try teaching other people in your study group the concepts you’re learning. That way, you’ll be able to learn easier and more effectively.(试着把你正在学习的概念教给你学习小组的其他人。这样,你就能更容易、更有效地学习。)”可知此处讲的依旧是学习小组内可以做的事情以及这样做的好处,空处承上启下,所以空处应该接着上文讲在小组内可以做的事情,F项Solve problems independently before comparing answers.(先独立解决问题,再比较答案。)指出小组学习时可以先独立解决问题,再比较答案,承接上文,引出下文,符合上下文语境,故选F项。
【16题详解】
根据空前“Rewrite your notes in your own words. Organizing your notes helps you remember information a lot easier.(用你自己的话重写笔记。整理笔记可以帮助你更容易地记住信息。)”指出本段的建议是要整理笔记,根据空后“Rewrite them on a separate page so all of the similar information is organized and easy to read.(在单独的页面上重写它们,这样所有类似的信息都是有组织的,易于阅读。)” Even if you took notes in class, the information may be all over the place.(即使你在课堂上做了笔记,信息也可能到处都是。)

It was Father’s Day and I wanted to make it special for my father. I planned to surprise him with a homemade breakfast in bed and a day full of activities that he loved.
I woke up early that day and started preparing his favorite breakfast, paratha with butter and honey, and a glass of milk. I put a note on the side of the plate where I had written, “I love you, Dad!” and arranged everything perfectly.
With the plate in my hands, I walked toward Dad’s bedroom. I opened the door and tiptoed(踮着脚走)toward his bed. But to my surprise, Dad was not in bed. I looked around the room, but couldn’t find him there. I searched for him in the house. But there was no sign of him.
I checked his car and it was in the garage(车库). I was very worried and did not know what to do. Just then I saw my mum coming out from the other room. I asked her about Dad and she told me that he had to leave early for work that day. He had an important meeting and a car was sent from his office to pick him up.
I was sad to hear that. Then I slowly walked towards my room, and there I noticed a note on my side table. It was from my dad. He had written the same thing Mum had just told me, but he had also promised to buy oranges on his way back as I had asked him to do so the night before. He had also expressed how sad he was to be spending this day without me, but promised to make up for it as soon as possible.

Paragraph2: The next morning, I woke up early and quickly freshened up.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I was disappointed but I knew that work was important to my dad. He was always working hard to provide for our family. He rarely took a day off, even on Father’s Day. I was amazed and impressed by his dedication and love for our family. I also felt lucky to have a father like him. I decided to make the most of the day and spend it doing the things that we loved doing together. The day passed by quickly, and before long, it was time for bed.
The next morning, I woke up early and quickly freshened up. When I went into the dining room, the wonderful smell of fruit pie caught my nose. Dad was sitting on the sofa reading newspapers and waiting for me to wake up. He had taken the day off to spend some time with me and I was overjoyed when he told me this. We sat down to eat my favorite breakfast together. He told me how proud he was of me and appreciated everything I did for him. Sometimes things don’t go as planned but love never changes.

C. Skills for independent living.
B. Nervous. C. Meaningful. D. Peaceful.
C
A Useful. B. Unworkable. C. Time-saving. D. Professional.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Korean robot conducts orchestra
B. EveR 6 brings conducting a bright future
C. The war between robots and musicians is on
D. AI robots create music and perform it on stage
