Discover World Heritage
Heritage is treasure from the past — what we live with today and what we pass on to future generations. To preserve it, UNESCO safeguards hundreds of natural and cultural World Heritage sites around the world.
Here are 4 World Heritage sites:
Historic Centre of Rome
Founded, according to legend, by Romulus and Remus in 753 BC, Rome was first the centre of the Roman Republic, then of the Roman Empire, and it became the capital of the Christian world in the 4th century.
Ancient City of Damascus
Founded in 3000 BC, Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East. In the Middle Ages, it was the centre of a splendid craft industry, specializing in swords. The city has some 125 monuments from different periods of its history.
Old Havana
Havana was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. By the 17th century, it had become one of the Caribbean’s main centres for ship-building. Although it is today a modern city, its old centre remains an interesting mix of Baroque and neoclassical (新古典主义的) monuments.
Ancient City of Pingyao
Pingyao, founded in the 14th century, shows the evolution of architectural styles and town planning in Imperial China over five centuries. Of special interest are the splendid buildings associated with banking, for which Pingyao was the major centre for the whole of China in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
1. Which of the following was last founded?
A. Rome. B. Pingyao. C. Havana. D. Damascus.
2. What can we learn from the text?

When 32-year-old Chinese engineer Lin Hao took the stage at the International Sustainable Engineering Awards (ISEA) in Berlin last year, his hands trembled slightly. Known as sustainable engineering’s “Nobel Prize”, the ISEA honors innovations tackling global environmental challenges. Lin’s team from the China Academy of Engineering had spent three years developing a low-cost water purification system for rural developing regions, making them one of three finalists for the top prize.
Lin’s journey started in 2021, when a volunteer trip to a Kenyan village shocked him: villagers walked 5 km daily for clean water, while local river water, polluted by agricultural waste, was undrinkable. He noted that existing engineering solutions were too costly or complex for poor communities. Back in Beijing, he gathered a team of young engineers and environmental scientists to create a system using locally abundant materials like coconut shells and sand, focusing on balancing effectiveness with simplicity for maintenance without professional training.
Months of lab and rural Chinese village tests brought setbacks — once a model failed after rain when filter materials clogged. The team redesigned it with volcanic rocks to prevent blockages, sticking to Lin’s belief: “Engineering isn’t just about fancy technology. It’s about solving real problems for real people.” By 2023, their system purified 500 liters of water daily, removing 99% of harmful bacteria, and cost under $100 — one-tenth the price of similar commercial systems.Lin’s team won the ISEA. In his speech, he said the award belonged to people lacking clean water and engineers who believed technology should serve humanity. Post-award, over 200 systems were installed in Kenya, Tanzania and Myanmar. Returning to the 2021 Kenyan village, Lin was greeted by children with clean water. He realized engineering’s true reward was changing lives, not trophies.
4. Why did Lin Hao develop the low-cost water purification system?
A. To win the International Sustainable Engineering Awards.
B. To promote Chinese engineering technology globally.
C. To solve the clean water shortage in poor rural areas.
D. To make a profit from selling the system to developing countries.
5. What made Lin’s water purification system special?
A. Its expensive high-tech materials.
B. Its simple and low-priced application.
C. Its ability to purify sea water.
D. Its design for urban communities.
6. What does the underlined word “clogged” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Broken into pieces.
B. Mixed with other substances.
C. Removed from the system.
D. Blocked up with dirt.
7. What can we infer about Lin Hao from the passage?
A. He cares about using technology to help people.
B. He prefers working alone on engineering projects.
C. He has won many international engineering awards.
D. He plans to stop the water purification project soon.
C 5. B 6. D 7. A

根据第二段“Lin’s journey started in 2021, when a volunteer trip to a Kenyan village shocked him: villagers walked 5 km daily for clean water, while local river water, polluted by agricultural waste, was undrinkable.

Known for its role in Game of Thrones (《权力的游戏》), the dire wolf (冰原狼) went extinct over 10,000 years ago. On April 7, the US company Colossal Biosciences announced restoring this species via de-extinction — a historic first.
Time magazine said scientists studied fossils (化石) such as a 13,000-year-old dire wolf tooth and a 72,000-year-old ear bone and compared their genes to those of gray wolves to discover differences. They edited 14 key genes in gray wolf blood cells to match dire wolf traits, implanting modified cell’s nuclei (核) into surrogate (代孕) dogs’ eggs.
The babies, larger than gray wolves, now live in a preserve. They behaved like wolves by howling at two weeks old. But “we have not seen them attempt to hunt live prey”, Colossal’s Paige McNickle told Time magazine.
Some scientists have criticized the project. Professor Nic Rawlence from Otago University questioned using fossil DNA, calling it too damaged to use. “Ancient DNA is like if you put fresh DNA in a 500 degree oven overnight, it comes out like dust,” Rawlence told the BBC. He argued Colossal actually only created “a hybrid (杂交品种)” — a gray wolf with dire wolf features.
Colossal isn’t just reviving the dire wolf. Their list includes the woolly mammoth, dodo and Tasmanian tiger. Their mission goes beyond de-extinction: they also use the same technique to prevent species in danger from disappearing. For example, they brought back four red wolves, an endangered species, in the same way of restoring the dire wolf.
The Center for Biological Diversity predicts that 30% of the planet’s genetic diversity could be lost by 2050. Colossal CEO Ben Lamm argues that genetic engineering is crucial to prevent this loss. Yet some warn there could be consequences. Introducing new species can cause invasive species, while cloning often leads to health problems in animals and surrogates.
8. How did scientists try to restore the dire wolves?
A. By obtaining DNA from living dire wolves.
B. By hybridizing different modern wolf species.
C. By studying fossils of dire wolf and surrogating.
D. By using complete DNA of dire wolves to clone.
9. What can be learned about the “restored” dire wolf babies?
A. They exhibit some wolf-like behaviors.
B. They have already begun hunting live prey.
C. They are bigger in size than adult gray wolves.
D. They are completely the same as the ancient dire wolves.
10. Why does the author mention red wolves in the 5th paragraph?
A. To illustrate the variety of revived species.
B. To highlight the importance of biodiversity.
C. To contrast with the dire wolf’s revival process.
D. To show Colossal’s broader conservation efforts.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the de-extinction?
A. Opposed and critical. B. Objective and cautious.
C. Supportive and optimistic. D. Humorous and unconcerned.
C 9. A 10. D 11. B

They edited 14 key genes in gray wolf blood cells to match dire wolf traits, implanting modified cell’s nuclei into surrogate dogs’ eggs.
根据第三段中“The babies, larger than gray wolves, now live in a preserve. They behaved like wolves by howling at two weeks old.(这些幼崽比灰狼大,现在生活在一个保护区里。它们在两周大的时候就像狼一样嚎叫)”可知,这些“复活”的冰原狼幼崽表现出了一些类似狼的行为。故选A。
根据第五段中“Colossal isn’t just reviving the dire wolf. Their list includes the woolly mammoth, dodo and Tasmanian tiger. Their mission goes beyond de-extinction: they also use the same technique to prevent species in danger from disappearing. For example, they brought back four red wolves, an endangered species, in the same way of restoring the dire wolf.(Colossal公司不仅仅是在复活冰原狼。它们的名单还包括猛犸象、渡渡鸟和塔斯马尼亚虎。它们的使命不仅仅是让灭绝的物种复活:它们还使用同样的技术来防止濒危物种消失。例如,他们用同样的方法带回了四种濒危物种红狼,就像恢复冰原狼一样)”可推知,作者提到红狼是为了展示Colossal公司在保护濒危物种方面的更广泛努力。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“On April 7, the US company Colossal Biosciences announced restoring this species via de-extinction — a historic first.(4月7日,美国Colossal Biosciences公司宣布通过“去灭绝”技术恢复这一物种,这是历史上的首次)”以及最后一段中“Colossal CEO Ben Lamm argues that genetic engineering is crucial to prevent this loss. Yet some warn there could be consequences. Introducing new species can cause invasive species, while cloning often leads to health problems in animals and surrogates.(Colossal公司首席执行官本•拉姆认为,基因工程对于防止这种损失至关重要。然而,也有人警告说可能会有后果。引入新物种可能会导致入侵物种,而克隆往往会导致动物和代孕者的健康问题)”可推知,作者在文章中既提到了Colossal公司的创新尝试,也提到了科学界的争议和潜在风险,因此作者对于去灭绝技术的态度是客观且谨慎的。故选B。
D
Imagine you’re polishing your resume (简历) for a job you really want. You ask an AI to “make me stand out”, and within seconds it sharpens your wording, and then quietly adds a professional strength you don’t actually have. A human career coach might polish your achievements to make them look nicer, but they would draw the line at fabrication (造假). The AI, however, doesn’t recognize that boundary.
Research by Köbis suggests this difference matters. People are more willing to behave dishonestly when they can give the act to AI, and AI systems are more likely to obey immoral requests than humans. The same pattern appears in classrooms: students ask AI to “polish” their writing, but often accept results far beyond their own ability. In both cases, AI makes individuals feel less responsible for the final untrue result.
This change can be explained by Albert Bandura’s study. It suggests that while most of us like to think of ourselves as honest people, using AI offers ways to avoid the discomfort of breaking that self-image when we want things to serve our self-interests. Unlike humans, AI does not experience guilt, consider its public image, or hold onto professional standards. As a result, people feel more willing to ask for dishonest help.
It’s easy to hand over the hard work to AI. After all, its efficiency often feels like the perfect solution when we are struggling with tight deadlines. But sometimes it’s also worth wondering if taking that shortcut changes more than just the text. Ultimately, we might gain a flawless result, but we risk losing our own authentic voice in the process. True growth, after all, relies on honest effort rather than artificial perfection.
12. What differs AI from a human coach in resume polishing?
A. AI stays faithful with the facts. B. AI makes achievements look nicer.
C. AI helps with polishing the wording. D. AI is unaware of the boundaries.
13. Why does the author mention the students’ example in Paragraph 2?
A. To show AI’s great power in writing. B. To prove students lack writing abilities.
C. To compare classrooms with workplaces. D. To explain how AI reduces a sense of duty.
14. Why does AI make dishonesty easier according to Albert Bandura’s study?
A. AI considers its public image. B. AI holds onto professional rules.
C. AI protects users’ honest self-image. D. AI shares the blame for users’ mistakes.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards AI according to the last paragraph?
A. Cautious. B. Negative. C. Approving. D. Tolerant.
D 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第一段中的“A human career coach might polish your achievements to make them look nicer, but they would draw the line at fabrication (造假). The AI, however, doesn’t recognize that boundary.(一位人类职业导师可能会润色你的成就,让它们看起来更好,但他们会在造假这件事上划清界限。然而,人工智能却意识不到这条界限)”可知,区别在于人工智能没有意识到界限。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“In both cases, AI makes individuals feel less responsible for the final untrue result.(在这两种情况下,人工智能让个人对最终虚假的结果责任感变弱)”可知,作者举学生的例子是为了解释人工智能是如何降低人的责任感的。
根据第三段中的“It suggests that while most of us like to think of ourselves as honest people, using AI offers ways to avoid the discomfort of breaking that self-image when we want things to serve our self-interests.(该研究表明,尽管我们大多数人都愿意认为自己是诚实的,但当我们想满足自身利益时,使用人工智能可以帮我们避免破坏这种自我形象带来的不安)”可知,人工智能可以保护使用者诚实的自我形象,从而让造假变得更容易。
根据最后一段中的“It’s easy to hand over the hard work to AI. After all, its efficiency often feels like the perfect solution when we are struggling with tight deadlines. But sometimes it’s also worth wondering if taking that shortcut changes more than just the text.(把繁重的工作交给人工智能很容易。

It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills. Birds were singing on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested and springy. Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine run.
Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me? I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.
So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully.

Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully. Then I hurried up and ran up to him, only to find that his leg was cramping. I tried to help him stand and move forward, but he refused. He asked me to run after the others so that I could get the first place. I thought for a second and decided to accompany him for a rest. Then we ran slowly forward together. Although we ran slowly and were overtaken by others, I felt relaxed and we finally crossed the finish line together.
A reporter took a picture of this moving scene and posted it online. During the time, the photo got a lot of likes. Many strangers sent the emails to praise me about the incident. In fact, I was a little hesitant at the beginning, but the moment I decided to help Blake, I felt calm and relaxed. I’m happy that I did the right thing.

A. Havana became a modern city in the 16th century.
B. Damascus was well-known for its craft industry.
C. Pingyao was once the major centre for ships in China.
D. Rome was founded by the Spanish.
3. In which section of a magazine can we read the text?
A. Culture. B. Nature. C. Education. D. Environment.

9. What can be learned about the “restored” dire wolf babies?
A. They exhibit some wolf-like behaviors.
B. They have already begun hunting live prey.

A. Cautious. B. Negative. C. Approving. D. Tolerant.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully.
