(必修一至选择性必修一的单元话题)
Passage 1
Everyone is making the best efforts and sometimes a few kind words of encouragement can aid people realizing that their effort is not useless. It happened when I was in the fifth standard in my school, back when I was a very shy girl.
It happened on the day when there was a drawing competition at my school. The theme is given to us all was the fight of “Kargil”. So we all started brainstorming to get some creative ideas. Everyone started drawing something on their canvas(画布) and I was still busy trying to think of something which can bring out my thought and emotions. While doing this I was kind of lost in another world. When my science teacher called my name, it brought me back to my senses. I responded to her voice which was coming from the back. She came to me and encouraged me by saying that “do not think too much over it, just put whatever comes in your mind on canvas. And do your best, you will do well”. I listened to her words of wisdom and started my painting.
The next day, the names of the winners of the competition were announced in front of the whole school. I heard my name as the 1st runner-up and winning the second prize. It was an astonishment for me as I never even dreamed to even get any prize.
Later, I thanked my science teacher for her words of encouragement and showing her confidence in me. Overall, that day, I became aware of my talent and I tried making more paintings whenever I got free time. Sometimes I think that if not for her words of encouragement I would have never acknowledged the talent I had.

Passage 2
There isn’t much doubt that one of the most influential people in my life was my grandmother Lizzie Kerns.
My brother Mike started the family custom of moving in with Granny Kerns during our high school years. I lived with her all through my senior year. She lives very close to the school, so I’d come over and eat lunch with her. On game days, I’d come over and take a nap from about four o’clock to seven-thirty, since game time was eight o’clock. I’d just go there, lie on the floor and go to sleep. Granny would come in at seven-thirty and say, “You’d better get up. You'll be playing in half an hour.” We used to shoot free throws every morning at six o'clock. One day I just wanted to sleep in. Granny woke me up and said, “Larry, those other boys are down there. You should be down there with them.” I got up and went to free throw practice.
Mark and I would be at Granny's for supper and later on, just before it was time to go to bed, Mark would say, “Mmm, some popcorn would taste good right now. Larry, what would you think about some popcorn?” Granny wouldn’t say a thing. But the next thing you knew, she’d have that pan out and you’d hear that popping sound in the kitchen.
We started moving in with her because we just didn’t have enough room. It was always a problem. After Mike started it, Mark did it for a while and then me. Later on, Eddie used to eat lunch there every day.
Granny was proud of all her grandkids. Oh, she read everything about me she could get her hands on and she knew I’d signed contracts (合同) for big money, but she never discussed it. None of us got special treatment. Granny loved all of us and that's the way it should be.
I’d have given her anything, but what she really wanted was security. Granny just wanted to know she had enough to get by. She always told me one thing, “I’m not afraid to die. When I get old and can’t do it anymore, I'm not going to be afraid to die.” That showed me a lot. Unfortunately, Granny passed away while I was writing this, so she was never able to see that I dedicated(献给) my book to her.
5. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?

B. She was trying to treat all grandchildren equally.

D. She was afraid that the author would be too proud of himself.
8. Why did the author feel regretful when writing the book?
A. Granny didn’t know he wrote a book.

One day I just wanted to sleep in. Granny woke me up and said, “Larry, those other boys are down there. You should be down there with them.” I got up and went to free throw practice.”( 奶奶会在七点半进来说:“你最好起床。

Passage 3
Twelve-year-old Catherine has a lot of friends—632, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Catherine’s online friendships could be making her lonely? That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.
Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not words with friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platform.
In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual world, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don’t need anyone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.
9. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To tell about true friends. B. To start a discussion.
C. To encourage online friendships. D. To summarize(总结) the text.
10. What does the underlined part “in the flesh” mean in paragraph 3?
A. In any case. B. In public. C. In person. D. In advance.
11. What is Katie’s attitude toward online communication?
A. Unconcerned. B. Positive. C. Worried. D. Confused.
12. Which of the following is the Rosen’s view?
A. Teenagers need to focus on real-world friendships. B. It’s easier to develop friendships in real life.
C. It’s wise to turn to friends online. D. Social media help people stay closely connected.
【答案】9. B 10. C 11. B 12. A
【导语】这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章通过具体事例谈论了网络交友的利与弊。
9. 推理判断题。根据第一段“Twelve-year-old Catherine has a lot of friends—632, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.(12 岁的 Catherine 有很多朋友,事实上,如果你把她的网上朋友算在内的话,她有 632 个。她花了很多时间和他们在一起)”和第二段中“But is it possible that Catherine’s online friendships could be making her lonely? (但是,Catherine 的网络友谊可能会让她感到孤独吗?)”可知,第一段的目的是为了引发下文的讨论。故选B项。
10. 词句猜测题。划线词句后文“Kids played Scrabble around a table, not words with friends on their phones. (孩子们围着桌子玩拼字游戏,而不是和朋友在手机上玩文字游戏)”说明那时的孩子们都是当面交流,从而推知划线词句“During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. (在你父母的童年时期,与朋友建立联系通常意味着与他们共度时光 in the flesh)”其中划线短语应为“当面”的意思。故选C项。
11. 推理判断题。根据第五段““There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation. (“这绝对是一种积极的影响。孩子们可以保持不断的联系,这意味着他们可以彼此分享更多的感受,”《应用程序一代》的合著者凯蒂·戴维斯说)”可知,Katie 对网络交流的态度是积极乐观的。故选B项。
12. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“If we are constantly checking in with our virtual world, we will have little time for our real-world friendships(如果我们不断地与虚拟世界联系,我们将几乎没有时间与现实世界建立友谊)”等内容可知,Rosen认为青少年需要关注现实世界中的友谊。故选A项。
Passage 4
The “diet” in diet drinks may be a false promise for some soda lovers. A study published recently in JAMA Network Open adds to the evidence that drinks made with sucralose(蔗糖素) may stimulate the appetite, at least among some people.
“We found that females and people with obesity(肥胖) had greater brain reward activity after consuming the artificial sweetener,” says study author Katie Page. “What was most surprising was the impact of body weight and biological sex. They were very important factors in the way that the brain responded to the artificial sweetener.”
Both groups also had a reduction in the hormone that inhibits(抑制) appetite, and they ate more food after they consumed drinks with sucralose, compared with after regular sugar-sweetened drinks. In contrast, the study found males and people of healthy weight did not have an increase in either brain reward activity or hunger response, suggesting they’re not affected in the same way.
Page and her team measured the response to diet soda in three ways. They used brain images of the 74 study participants to document the activation of parts of the brain linked to appetite. They used blood samples to measure blood sugar and hormones that can drive hunger. And they also tracked how much participants ate at a buffet table at the end of each study session.
“These results are consistent with patterns that we’ve actually seen in my lab in animal studies,” says Susan Swithers, a behavioral scientist at Purdue University.
“You are supposed to get sugar after something tastes sweet. Your body has been accustomed to that,” explains Swithers. But diet soda may lead to a disconnect. The sugar never arrives, and “that could decrease the body’s efficiency in metabolizing(新陈代谢) sugar the next time.”
13. What did Page find might affect the brain’s response to diet soda?
A. The artificial sweetener. B. The drinker’s sex and weight.
C. The reduction in hormones. D. The amount of sweet drinks.
14. What can we learn from paragraph four?
A. The methods of the study. B. The impacts of diet soda.
C. The causes of overeating. D. The responses of participants.
15. What is Swithers’ attitude toward Page’s study?
A. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Unsatisfied.
16. Where can you find this text?
A. A story collection. B. A travel journal.
C. A consumer guide. D. A health magazine.
【答案】13. B 14. A 15. B 16. D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了最新研究表明喝无糖汽水不但不会减肥,反而会刺激女性和肥胖者的食欲,吃得更多。
13. 细节理解题。根据第二段“ “We found that females and people with obesity (肥胖) had greater brain reward activity after consuming the artificial sweetener,” says study author Katie Page. “What was most surprising was the impact of body weight and biological sex. They were very important factors in the way that the brain responded to the artificial sweetener.”(“我们发现女性和肥胖者在食用人工甜味剂后,大脑的奖励活动更大,”研究报告的作者凯蒂·佩奇说。“最令人惊讶的是体重和生理性别的影响。它们是大脑对人工甜味剂做出反应的重要因素。”)”可知,佩奇的研究结果表明体重和性别是影响大脑对人造甜味剂反应的两个重要因素。故选B项。
14. 主旨大意题。根据第四段“Page and her team measured the response to diet soda in three ways. They used brain images of the 74 study participants to record the activities of parts of the brain linked to appetite. They used blood samples to measure blood sugar and hormones that can drive hunger. And they also tracked how much participants ate at a buffet table at the end of each study session.(佩奇和她的团队用三种方式测量了人们对无糖汽水的反应。他们使用74名研究参与者的大脑图像来记录大脑中与食欲有关的部分的活动。他们使用血液样本来测量血糖和能导致饥饿感的激素。他们还追踪了参与者在每次学习结束时在自助餐桌上吃了多少)”可知,本段主要介绍了佩奇使用了三种方法来测量大脑对无糖汽水的反应,所以从本段我们可以了解到其研究方法。故选A项。
15. 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““These results are consistent with patterns that we’ve actually seen in my lab in animal studies,” says Susan Swithers, a behavioral scientist at Purdue University.(“这些结果与我们在实验室的动物研究中实际看到的模式一致,”普渡大学的行为科学家苏珊·斯威瑟斯说)”可知,斯威瑟斯认为佩奇的研究与自己在实验室的动物研究中看到的模式一致。由此推知,她认可佩奇的研究。故选B项。
16. 推理判断题。通读全文,结合第一段“The “diet” in diet drinks may be a false promise for some soda lovers. A study published recently in JAMA Network Open adds to the evidence that drinks made with sucralose (蔗糖素) may stimulate the appetite, at least among some people.(对于一些苏打爱好者来说,无糖饮料中的“减肥”可能是一个虚假的承诺。最近发表在《美国医学会杂志网络公开版》上的一项研究进一步证明,用三氯蔗糖制成的饮料可能会刺激食欲,至少对某些人来说是这样)”可知,文章介绍了关于无糖汽水的最新研究成果。无糖汽水会使女性和肥胖消费 者吃的更多,起不到减肥效果。由此推知,文章可能出自与健康相关的杂志。故选D项。

Explain what’s not OK. Discourage your teenager from gossiping, spreading rumour, bullying or damaging someone’s reputation — online or otherwise. Talk to your teenager about what is appropriate and safe to share on social media.
Encourage face-to-face contact with friends. This is particularly significant for teenagers who are easily hurt by social anxiety disorder.

Passage 8
Rap music has long been the poster child for negativity in society for a number of decades. It has been criticized(批评) in the media and seen by a good number of people as a bad influence on citizens in general. The lyrics might have something to blame in this regard as they often seemingly celebrate violence as well as drugs and alcohol. The reality is that rap music is greatly misunderstood. In spite of the negativity that often surrounds it, however, rap music can have a positive influence on listeners.
One of these positive effects is that it has been used as a great unifier of diverse populations around the world. It started as a subculture among African American communities in America but it is now a phenomenon of global culture. As a matter of fact, it isn't only limited to African American communities, as non black communities make up seventy five percent of the global rap audience. Its infectious rhythms, catchy beats, and relatable lyrics hold universal attraction that goes beyond cultural and language barriers.
Rap has also been vital in promoting social and political awareness among the youth of today. Rap music educates people from different points of views and raises many social issues. Rap is channel(渠道) for people to speak freely about their view on political or social issues and by doing so, it encourages teenagers to become concerned and aware of these issues. A few of them that rap has created awareness in are racial discrimination (歧视), the importance of education and believing in your dreams.
Rap music is entertainment(娱乐) and should not be treated any differently than any other form of entertainment out there. If critics of rap music still believe that rap only sends negative messages, they should listen closer. The bottom line is that all rap music is not degenerate(堕落的) and consideration should be taken when analysing the message that the music is presenting

Passage 10
One of the most commonly asked questions in the English language is “How are you?” and whether a person is feeling happy or sad, excited or lonely, fantastic or heartbroken they will just about always answer “Fine”. Why is this? Is it because humans are not good at expressing their emotions? Maybe it is just that emotions are often too personal or too complex to be shared in a casual conversation. However, for centuries, people have often expressed their emotions on paper, in the form of poetry.
The beauty of poetry is that the emotions the poet is trying to convey are often disguised in images so that the poet can maintain a feeling of privacy. For example, in Li Bai’s poem, “Seeing Meng Haoran Off at Yellow Crane Tower”, the poet describes the sail of his friend’s boat rules disappearing into the distance while he watches the river rolling by. This could seem merely like the description of a beautiful scene, but by reading into the poem, you can sense the deep sadness and loneliness that his friend’s leaving has caused him.
Poetry is also written to celebrate positive human emotions like joy, love and happiness. Throughout history, men and women have written poems to their loved ones to express their deep feelings. Poems about nature, which express the poet’s appreciation of the beauty in the world around him or her, are also common. Sadly, many poems have also been written to express anger at the destruction of nature and reactions to horrific events like war and death.
The interesting thing about poetry is that anyone reading a poem can have their own view or feelings about it and heated discussions can often arise over what the poet was originally trying to say or express. Poetry can be interpreted in many different ways. Often, a poem that one person loves another hates. Equally, a poem that one person understands and relates to, may turn another person off.
35. What is the purpose of questions in Para. 1?
A. To introduce a topic.
B. To teach people how to start a conversation.
C. To have empathy with reader.
D. To review the commonly asked questions.
36. What does the underlined word “disguised” in the second paragraph mean?
A. seen B. described C. hidden D. disclosed
37. According to the author, which of the following is not false?
A. Humans wish they could be better at expressing their feelings.
B. Many human emotions are very hard to capture in casual conversations.
C. Human emotions are too intense and wide-ranging to be expressed by most people.
D. Poetry is the most important way to express people’s inner feelings.
38. According to the author, what makes poetry particularly interesting?
A. The difference in how different readers interpret and appreciate a poem.
B. The imagery that a poet can use to express emotions can be misunderstood by the reader.
C. The ability of the reader to clearly understand the meaning of a poem.
D. Poets’ unique description and fantastic language about poems.
【答案】35. A 36. C 37. B 38. A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了诗歌的美。
35. 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Why is this? Is it because humans are not good at expressing their emotions? Maybe it is just that emotions are often too personal or too complex to be shared in a casual conversation. However, for centuries, people have often expressed their emotions on paper, in the form of poetry.(为什么会这样? 故选A。
根据第一段中的“One of the most commonly asked questions in the English language is ‘How are you?’ and whether a person is feeling happy or sad, excited or lonely, fantastic or heartbroken they will just about always answer ‘Fine’.(英语中最常见的问题之一是‘你好吗?’,而无论一个人是感到快乐还是悲伤、兴奋还是孤独、美妙还是心碎,他们几乎总是会回答‘很好’。)”和“Maybe it is just that emotions are often too personal or too complex to be shared in a casual conversation.(也许只是情绪往往过于个人化或过于复杂,无法在随意的谈话中分享。)”
根据最后一段中的“The interesting thing about poetry is that anyone reading a poem can have their own view or feelings about it and heated discussions can often arise over what the poet was originally trying to say or express.(诗歌的有趣之处在于,任何阅读诗歌的人都可以对其有自己的看法或感受,而且经常会就诗人最初想说或表达的内容展开激烈的讨论。)”可知,诗歌的有趣之处在于任何人都可以对一首诗有自己的观点或感受,而且会经常出现热烈的讨论,即不同的人对一首诗的理解和鉴赏方式不同。故选A。
Passage 11
Stories of immigrants attract me a lot, especially the life stories of Italians who have come to America since the 1700s. In each of these stories I see elements of my own story, that of leaving my birthplace and family and creating a new life in a different culture and in a different language.
The child of Italian immigrants and an award-winning scholar of Italian literature, in the book My Two Italies, Joseph Luzzi struggled to create or find his own identity from an early age. Even more problematic for him was “which” Italy to “choose,” the one he inherited from his family, poor and linked to old traditions and customs he finds rude and somewhat cruel, or the one he finds in literature and art books that show him a country with a modern literary culture.
The choice becomes even sadder as in his professional life he becomes a scholar of Italian literature and culture. He describes episodes of his youth that show the clash between the first and the second generation immigrants that are both funny and tragicomic(悲喜剧式的). These episodes highlight the daily customs his parents brought from their hometown that are in conflict with Joseph’s desire to “fit in” the American culture. Joseph’s visits to Italy as a student and then as a scholar deepen the divide between his two Italies and highlight his quest for identity.
The author’s personal changes are full of quotes and comments on the cultural and political landscape of Italy. I find that his insights on contemporary Italian cultural and political phenomena are particularly interesting. In this book, Joseph touches or comments in depth about several issues concerning Italian life, such as the relationship between dialects and the official “Italian” language, and the Southern “question” or the uneasy interaction between Northern and Southern Italians.
I enjoyed reading this book. It is personal, moving, educational and entertainment. I hope you will enjoy it too!
39. Why is the author interested in stories of immigrants?
A. He left his birthplace to go to America. B. He was a child of Italian immigrants.
C. He lived in America as an immigrant. D. He likes to learn the Italian language.
40. Which of the following is more difficult for Joseph to deal with?
A. Seeking out the the true Italian within himself.
B. Inheriting traditions and customs from his family.
C. Bridging the gap between the rude and modern culture.
D. Finding the country with a modern literacy culture.
41. What does the underlined word “clash” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Interaction. B. Divide. C. Difference. D. Conflict.
42. What can we learn from Joseph’s life?
A. He developed the desire of fitting in American culture after his first visit to Italy.
B. Deep understanding of Italian culture and politics helped him settle inner changes.
C. Joseph’s parents hardly required him to inherit traditional Italian culture and customs.
D. Issues concerning Italian life had a positive impact on the relation within his family.
【答案】39. C 40. A 41. D 42. B

40. 推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Even more problematic for him was “which” Italy to “choose,” the one he inherited from his family, poor and linked to old traditions and customs he finds rude and somewhat cruel, or the one he finds in literature and art books that show him a country with a modern literary culture.(对他来说,更大的问题是“选择”哪个意大利,是他从贫穷的家庭继承来的,与他认为粗鲁甚至有些残忍的古老传统和习俗有关的意大利,还是他从文学和艺术书籍中找到的,向他展示了一个拥有现代文学文化的国家。)”可知,对Joseph来说更难处理的是寻找自己内心真正的意大利人。故选A。
41. 词句猜测题。根据划线单词下一句“These episodes highlight the daily customs his parents brought from their hometown that are in conflict with Joseph’s desire to “fit in” the American culture. Joseph’s visits to Italy as a student and then as a scholar deepen the divide between his two Italies and highlight his quest for identity.(这些情节突出了他父母从家乡带来的日常习俗,这与Joseph“融入”美国文化的愿望相冲突。Joseph作为学生和学者访问意大利加深了他的两个意大利之间的分歧,并突出了他对身份的追求。)”可知,划线词所在句子表示他描述了自己年轻时第一代和第二代移民之间的冲突,划线词的意思是“冲突、分歧”,和conflict意思相近。故选D。
42. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The author’s personal changes are full of quotes and comments on the cultural and political landscape of Italy. I find that his insights on contemporary Italian cultural and political phenomena are particularly interesting.(作者的个人变化充满了对意大利文化和政治景观的引用和评论。我发现他对当代意大利文化和政治现象的见解特别有趣。)”可知,对意大利文化和政治的深刻理解帮助Joseph解决了内心的变化。故选B。

Some of these groups go beyond traditional street cycling and sponsor cross country trail courses. Indoor cycling-for- charity events have also become popular in areas where the weather and season or urban environment may not lend itself to outdoor cycling activities.
Arranging your own cycling-for-charity event is also a possibility. Finding ways to publicize the event and gain sponsors can be done through various local or regional cycling clubs, through employers, local churches, and other groups interested in promoting charitable activities.

Passage 14
(23-24高一下·江苏徐州·期中)While considering comfortable places to hibernate(冬眠) in winter, a 6- year -old black bear picked out a storm culvert(涵洞) near Wannaska, Minnesota. Unfortunately for the bear, this decision didn’t turn out well.
In late February, the snow around him started melting, causing the culvert to flood and then freeze again. The poor fellow was trapped in snow and ice for three days before some kind humans noticed him and called authorities for help.
By the time experts arrived, people had already tried digging the bear out and luring him with a variety of unhealthy (for bears) treats. Luckily, the bear wasn’t interested in food because he was still in hibernation mode.
A wildlife research biologist Andrew Tri arrived on the scene to assess the situation. “He tried to push himself out but got stuck in the place and tired,” the biologist explained. The team injected the bear with an anesthetic (麻醉剂). Once he was asleep, it took five strong men to pull the bear, estimated to weigh between 375 and 400 pounds, out of the culvert. Andrew gave him a full check-up and determined he was in great physical shape, even though he was still a bit sleepy!
The crew pulled him out and transported him to the Thief Lake Wildlife Management Area in Marshall County to finish out the winter. “He’s in the back of a pickup truck now, and we’ll make him a new den(窝点),” said Andrew. “He probably won’t stay, but at least it will give him some protection from the elements after that.”
“If you’re ever concerned about a bear’s safety, by all means give us a call,” the experts advised. “But don’t try to move it or feed it! Doing so can result in a bad situation (either for you or for the bear).” We’re glad this bear got the help he needed.
51. Why was the black bear in trouble?
A. He hasn’t eaten anything for many days.
B. He chose the wrong place to hibernate.
C. He was in bad condition.
D. His feet were caught by a trap.

Passage 15
It is well-known that earthquake is one of the most serious natural disasters. Because of its sudden nature, the traditional earthquake prediction method is often difficult to predict it accurately, and has always been a difficult problem in the field of earth science. Recently, artificial intelligence is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm(算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations(强度计算) for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they used a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics (地震物理学), and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the Al provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background sounds in the Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and possibly improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has locations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location in 300 earthquakes for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, are what moves science forward,” says Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
55. What can we infer from the passage?
A. AI can predict earthquakes accurately.
B. AI is provided with accurate strength calculations.
C. AI can prevent the potential earthquakes from coming.
D. AI forecasts earthquakes by analyzing background sounds.
56. What makes Texas a better place to do the follow-up tests?
A. Building many earthquake stations. B. Over ten years of continuous records.
C. Reliable earthquake tracing networks. D. Researcher’s confidence in the technology.
57. What is the author’s attitude to the AI algorithm?
A. Indifferent. B. Supportive. C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful.
58. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. AI helps reduce possible earthquakes by 70%.
B. AI predicts earthquakes with a certain accuracy.
C. AI algorithm improves earthquake preparation worldwide.
D. AI algorithm produces accurate predictions about earthquakes.

Passage 16
The horse-face skirt, or mamianqun in Chinese, is receiving renewed attention on the fashion stage.
Far from being photoshoot prop, wearing the horse-face skirt has become almost trend among many Chinese celebrities and influencers for various international social occasions. On Douyin, China’s TikTok, individuals who sport the horse-face skirt on city streets in Paris and other international cities can easily gain millions of likes. A popular blogger on Xiaohongshu appeared on a British television program to discuss the development of the English Premier League in China while wearing a horse-face skirt.
From its first appearance during the Song Dynasty to becoming a standout representation of Chinese clothing, mamianqun has crossed nearly a millennium of history. In the current trend of traditional Chinese clothing reconstruction, how has the horse-face skirt stood out to become the most famous clothing?
Mao Zhaoxi, who is a hanfu enthusiast, told the Global Times that Hanfu is the external demonstration of culture, integrating the life philosophies, values, and aesthetic(美学) views formed and inherited(继承) by the Chinese people generation after generation. Passage 17
Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. A study conducted by the US think tank(智囊团) Pew Research Center showed that 92 percent of teenagers go online daily.
The wide spread of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenagers’ lives.
Changing relationships
High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces face-to-face communication.
“It makes in-person relationships harder because people give attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends,” Cooper said.
There’s also a greater possibility of things getting lost in translation over social media.
“If half of your relationship is over social media, you don’t really know how the other person is reacting,” Sienna Schulte, a junior student from Illinois, said.
Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with anyone from anywhere. Beth Kaplan from Illinois met her long-distance friend through social media. He currently lives in Scotland, but they’re still able to frequently communicate with one another.
“I can feel close to someone that I’m talking to via(通过) FaceTime,” Kaplan said.
Wanting to be “liked”
The rise of social media has changed the way teenagers see themselves.
The 19-year-old Essena O’Neill announced on the social networking service Instagram that she was quitting social media because it made her obsessed(痴迷) with appearing perfect online.
Negative comments also can do great damage to a teenager’s self-esteem(自尊).
In particular, anonymous(匿名的) social media apps such as Yik Yak may provide opportunities for cyber bullying(网络欺凌).
The app allows users within 5 miles (8 km) to create and add comments to everything. Teenagers who get negative comments on these sites can’t help but feel hurt.
Opening new doors
However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site Youtube.
“Social media can help people show themselves and their talents to the world in a way that was never possible before,” Korsos said.
But Korsos recognizes that social media has become a distraction (让人分心的事). “Social media, though it helps people connect with their friends and stay updated, is not all necessary.”
63. What is the article mainly about?
A. The major problems with social media. B. The effect of social media on teenagers.
C. How teenagers benefit from social media. D. Why social media appeals so much to teenagers.
64. How does social media change relationships, according to the article?
A. It pushes people to meet their friends more often offline.
B. It encourages people to pay more attention to those around them.
C. It enables users to understand accurately what others are talking about online.
D. It allows people to keep in touch with their friends who live far away more easily.
65. Which statement about the use of social media would Armin Korsos probably agree with?
A. The use of social media taught him to turn negative comments into motivations.
B. Social media can easily become an addiction(着迷), despite its benefits.
C. Social media is mostly a distraction to teenagers, so it is unnecessary for it to exist.
D. If used well, social media can create opportunities for teenagers to develop themselves.
【答案】63. B 64. D 66. 5

Passage 18
Around 2 million deaths each year are linked to physical inactivity. And a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle is one of the leading causes of death in the world.
A new study published in the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine suggests that regular short exercise “snacks” throughout the working day might be enough to mitigate the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
For the study. 11 participants(参与者) sat for 8-hour sessions. During the sessions, they followed one of four exercise “snacks” — 1 minute of walking after every 30 minutes of sitting, 1 minute after 60 minutes, 5minutes every 30 minutes, and 5minutes every 60 minutes — or a “snack” with no walking.
The researchers found that participants’ blood sugar and blood pressure levels were reduced after 5minutes of walking for every 30 minutes of sitting.
Lead study author Dr Keith Diaz, associate professor of behavioral medicine, said the most exciting part of the new research is that they’ve answered how to prevent the harmful health effects of sedentary sitting.
The researchers also found that all exercise “snacks” resulted in a reduction in participants’ tiredness, and an improvement in mood when compared to no walking at all.
“Beyond improving your physical health,” Dr Diaz said, “having regular walks to break up your sitting will put you in a better mood and help you feel more energetic.”
Dr Diaz added that the next steps for the research include finding more ways to reduce the harmful effects of sitting.
“We hope to find the least amount of movement you have to do to prevent the health harm of sitting.” Dr Diaz said. “The reality is that many adults will find it hard to walk every half hour. So finding a more practical recommendation is still needed.”
66. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Measure B. Reduce C. Decide D. Manage
67. What about the study excited Dr Diaz the most?
A. It got published in a journal.
B. It used a new research method.
C. It proved the harmful effects of sitting too long.
D. It found a way to prevent the harm of too much sitting.
68. What can all of the four exercise “snacks” reduce?
A. People’s tiredness B. People’s weight
C. People’s blood pressure D. People’s blood sugar
69. Why does Dr Diaz plan to continue the research?
A. The finding is likely to be wrong. B. The solution may have side effects.
C. The solution is not suitable for all. D. The study hasn’t got much attention.
【答案】66. B 67. D 68. A 69. C

A. Both Mike and the author were lazy and playful.

Passage 6
Social media allows teenagers to create online identities, communicate with others and build social networks. These networks can provide teenagers with valuable support. Teenagers also use social media for entertainment and self-expression. And the platforms can expose teenagers to current events, allow them to communicate across geographic barriers and touch them about different kinds of subjects. However, social media use can also, negatively affect teenagers, distracting them, influencing their sleep, and exposing them to bullying (恐吓), rumour (谣言) spreading, untrue views of other people’s lives and peer pressure.
There are steps you can take to encourage responsible use of social media and limit some of its negative effects.
Set reasonable limits. Talk to your teenager about how to avoid letting social media affect his or her activities, sleep, meals or homework. Encourage a bedtime routine that avoids electronic media use, and keep cellphones and iPads out of teenagers’ bedrooms. Set an example by following these rules yourself.
Monitor your teenager’s accounts. Let your teenager know that you’ll be regularly checking his or her social media accounts. You might aim to do so once a week or more. And make sure you follow through.
Talk about social media. Talk about your own social media habits. Ask your teenager how he or she is using social media and how it makes him or her feel. Remind your teenager that social media is full of unrealistic images.

31. What can be inferred about rap music in the last paragraph?
A. Rap music is now unfairly treated.
B. Rap music is suitable for everyone.
C. Rap music is difficult to understand.
D. Rap music is simply for entertainment.

Passage 12
2Cycling for charity is a good way to raise money for worthy causes. There are several approaches to getting started.
Popular international social websites have cycling-for- charity pages where it is possible to find upcoming events and sponsors(赞助商). Many international organizations can also be located online that organize regular cycling for charity events. An example of this is Best Buddies International, founded in 1989 and existing in all 50 US states and in 50 countries around the world. Best Buddies International sponsors cycling events to raise money for people with developmental disabilities.
Research organizations mainly dedicated to curing diseases and groups like the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the US, with similar MS associations in Canada and Australia, arrange cycling for-charity events on a frequent basis. Other common diseases and medical conditions, such as heart disease, Parkinson’s, and cancer, also have national and international organizations that regularly arrange cycling for-charity events. Social movement nonprofits also are involved in cycling for charity, based around such issues as poverty and regional disasters, like earthquakes and hurricanes, which inspire cycling fundraisers around the globe.
Local community groups are another avenue towards forming a cycling group and sponsoring charity rides and charity races. Bicycle clubs and retailers(零售商) are often connected to community outreach groups that arrange such events, and are a good source of information on how to get involved in one.
43. Which of the following organizes cycling for the disabled?
A. A bicycle club. B. A local community group.
C. Best Buddies International. D. National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
44. What is the main function of the research organizations?

A. He was very excited. B. He was very angry.
C. He ate many foods. D. He was still a bit sleepy.
54. Which of the following statements would the experts agree with?
A. Don’t try to move a hibernating bear by yourself.
B. Bears can be very dangerous when they are sleeping.
C. Bears always attack people when people are alone.
D. Let the trapped bears continue to sleep, and do nothing.

She said, “Many young people believe that the horse-face skirt is not just a fashion item, but also a cultural symbol. This shows the awakening of traditional aesthetic genes among the younger generations, indicating that the confidence in our own culture is constantly increasing.”
Moreover, Hu Xiao, one of the founders of the ancient Chinese costumes restoration team, analyzed one main reason of this phenomenon lies in the fact that the horse-face skirt has managed to remain relevant, never falling out of fashion. “Many people thought the horse-face skirt had disappeared for a while, but in fact, Chinese brides can always be seen in the costume of mamianqun.” The horse-face skirt possesses a strong sense of inheritance while also possessing fashionable features. This perhaps is the cultural DNA that enables it to become a fashion item.
The momentum(潮流) of Chinese-style clothing has begun, and how to lead the trend of Chinese-style clothing through design and how to stay at the forefront of the national trend is an issue that will not disappear in a short time.

A. It develops everyone’s aesthetic and philosophy view.
B. It represents the ancient Chinese costumes and life.
C. It wakens the young to love their own traditional culture.
D. It demonstrates the importance of Chinese-style clothing.
62. How does the author consider the future development of Chinese-style clothing?
A. Good beginning and it will lead the world fashion.
B. Good beginning and it will fall into the disfavors.
C. Good beginning and it will own fashionable DNA.
D. Good beginning and it will have a long way to go.
