Passage 1
Nola Ochs was born in Kansas in 1911. There were many farms and everybody had a job to do. Nola Ochs was raised under the endless sky, and the long arc(弧线) of the sun marked her chore-filled (满是工作的) days. Her life was common. She grew and married, had children and grandchildren, taught in country schools, and lived the quiet Midwest life. But she was different in one way: After her husband died in 1972, Nola began taking classes and finally earned her associate degree(准学士学位) at the age of 77.
“I still want to go to school. It is fun to go to classes. And if I have homework to do in the evening, that takes up my time in a pleasant way,” she recalled. After some years went by, Nola decided to keep going and get her master’s degree in Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, where her granddaughter studied. She emailed the university for admission(入学), mentioning that she was 80, and had prepared for studying further.

Passage 2
My father’s T-shirt
As a teenager, I am not mature enough. I got angry quite easily and was not good at communicating with others. I had quarrels with my friends, and I was not polite to elders. Because of my bad behavior, I was sometimes punished by my father. However, it took me a long time to learn to control my temper and take the responsibility to make up for my mistakes.
I still remember it was an early autumn. Some leaves started to turn yellow and the weather became cool. One day, as I was getting ready for school, my mother carelessly handed me my father’s T-shirt instead of mine. At that time, I was getting to have a larger size than my father, so when I put on the T-shirt, I felt as if I wasn’t able to breathe! Soon, I realized that it was a small mistake which was made by my mother, but somehow the breathless feeling was so strong that it made me very angry. I could feel my anger growing, bubbling up inside myself. I shouted at her, “Why did you give me the wrong T-shirt?” My mother said sorry with a smile, but I continued to shout at her without thinking much. I got it off my body so wildly, making a hole in it and threw it on the floor. Then I put on my own T-shirt and rushed out of the house before my mother could stop me.
At that time, I didn’t consider how my mother was feeling. I just thought about myself. So after school, when I got home, I felt so regretful but I didn’t say a word to my mom. Feeling so frustrated, my mother shared her bad feeling with my father who was just after work from office, “See what your son has done.” I was so scared that maybe my father would punish me. But unexpectedly, instead of saying he would scold or beat me, my father quietly asked my mother to mend the T-shirt.

Passage 3
My parents would not let me go to school that morning. “Why not?” I argued. “I have exams. I have work in Spanish class that I can’t miss!” My mother gave me a sad look. “You have to get a checkup (身体检查),” she explained. I screamed, “NO!” My father pulled me over to the couch. “Alison,” my father said in a tone that was quiet but powerful. “You’re in the state of malnutrition(营养不良). And you know that. You can have all in the world, but if you don’t have your health, you have nothing.” For some reason, I believed him. I hadn’t wanted it to be this way.
I was a girl who didn’t like doing sports but was fond of snack food. I weighed 50kg at my age of 14. Most of the time, I avoided parties with my friends, afraid of how ugly they would think I looked. One day, I found a slim girl on TV was so attractive that I wanted to look like her. I forced myself to do exercise and started going on a diet for a good-looking body shape. During the summer, I did weekly weigh-ins(称重) and kept a strict diet. I memorized the calories of almost everything that I may eat. My only goal was to lose weight. Later, when it became too cold to run outside, I restricted my calories even more to make up for not being able to burn them.
Gradually I lost my weight a lot. But things turned out to be worse. My hands were especially dry, peeling and wrinkled. My sister called them old people’s hands. Once, I went shopping with my mom. While we waited in line to pay for our items, I felt I was going to faint(昏厥). I felt dizzy and standing was getting harder and harder.

Passage 4
I remember the first time I met Roy. He was standing in the center of a group of boys, talking and laughing. He was a cute boy known in the class for his kindness and generosity. My name is Daniel, a new boy in the class. Our whole family had moved from the north of England because of my father being offered a job here. I lost all my old friends and felt lonely at my new school.
Most students in my new class weren't very interested in a shy new boy. Roy was one of the few people who were kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group, and as a result, I started getting to know people. Roy and I became good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.
But just a year ago, Roy's father was knocked over by a car, who died a few days later. His family had to move to a much smaller house in order to manage financially. Roy, who had always been very close to his father, changed completely, becoming silent and moody. He had always been a clever, hard-working student but now he seemed to lose all interest in his work. He started losing friends. These days, Roy and I see each other from time to time, but we're no longer close.
Last week our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity. It was very successful and by the end of the day, we had made about £500. Our class teacher, Mr. White, came and chatted to a group of us that included Roy, and held up a box for us to see. “There's £500 in here," he said with a smile.
Having left something in the classroom, I went inside to get it, and found Roy holding a wallet in his hand. Seeing me, he walked out without saying a word. The next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen. Mr. White had left the box in the classroom for a few minutes, but when he came back it had disappeared.
This weekend morning, having thought about the situation for a while, I decided to ask Roy about the theft and went to see him. Roy was out, and I went upstairs to his bedroom to wait for him. It was a cold day and his jacket was lying on the back of a chair. I put it on and put my hands in the pockets. I could feel a lot of paper notes and I pulled them out.
It looked as if there was about £500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hands. At that moment, the door swung open, and Roy walked in.

Passage 5
Everyone in my drama class saw the paper in my hands shaking when I stood up to try out for a lead role in the yearly school Thanksgiving play. I was there because the teacher wanted everyone to try out for a part.
Being shy and not confident, I began nervously reading the part for the main character, Star. She had no parents. Feeling so sorry for her, I finished reading.
Later when reading the name list, the teacher looked at me and announced, “Patty, you play Star. Come and get your script(剧本).”I was shocked. Jim, an excellent boy, was playing the other lead.To learn my lines, I practiced every day and finally memorized them. I became more confident and happier.
Then we started practising acting. Jim played the character, a Scrooge(吝啬鬼), who is unwilling to put a candle in his window so that the light will show passers-by the slippery ice on the path below. On the Thanksgiving day, Star comes along, falls on the ice and gets injured.
Finally feeling bad, the Scrooge helps her up. To thank him, Star kisses his hand.
One day, before our drama class started, I saw a terrible drawing of me on the blackboard with words: Falling Star. I was laughed at by someone.
The teacher asked, “Who did this?” Nobody knew. We started rehearsing(排练), but my heart wasn’t in it. The teacher told me not to care about the silly trick; it wouldn’t happen again. But I was sad and anxious, wanting to quit. Finally I moved on and continually worked hard for the play.
Soon it was the day before the show. It was time for the dress rehearsal. I was excited. Everything went smoothly at the dress rehearsal until the scene where I slipped on the ice and the Scrooge helped me up.
When I kissed his hand, a terrible noise and laughter sounded from behind the set. I quickly left the stage and hurried into an empty room. With tears, I said, “I can’t do it. Please get someone else!”

Passage 6
The school’s hall got very noisy with excitement as students, teachers, and parents filled the seats, eagerly awaiting the start of the annual school talent show. Backstage, the performers paced nervously, their hearts pounding with anticipation and their minds filled with a mixture of excitement and fear.
Among them was Sarah, a shy but talented singer whose passion for music burned brightly within her. Ever since she was a lonely young girl, Sarah had found comfort in music. With nothing but her voice to accompany her, she would sing for hours on end, pouring her heart and soul into each note, each lyric, each breath.
Sarah’s talent did not go unnoticed. One day, while she was singing softly to herself during a lunch break at school, Mrs Caroline, the choir director, happened to overhear her. Immediately, she saw something special in Sarah—a talent that deserved to rise and shine.
Over the following weeks and months, Mrs Caroline took Sarah under her wing, offering guidance, support, and encouragement every step of the way. She encouraged Sarah to step out of her comfort zone, to embrace her gift, and to share it with the world.
Under Mrs Caroline’s instruction, Sarah began to push herself harder than ever before. She spent hours each day practicing her singing, honing her skills, and perfecting her craft. She sought out opportunities to perform in front of others, gradually building up her confidence and overcoming her fears.
When the moment finally came, with a deep breath, Sarah stepped out onto the stage, the spotlight blazing down upon her like a thousand suns. For a moment, Sarah was frozen in place. But then, with a determined smile, she raised the microphone to her lips and began to sing.

Passage 7
Amy loved to draw, and her hands, always dirty from the pencil lead, moved on the paper, showing the pictures in her mind. She would sit for hours, lost in art. Trees on her pages seemed to swing in an unseen wind, and the faces she drew wore lifelike expressions. But Amy didn’t look like the art she made. Her clothes were old and had many patches (补丁) that her mother made with care. Amy’s family did not have much money, but they loved each other very much. Her mother worked hard at many jobs to take care of them after Amy’s father got sick and died.
Amy had her good times and hard times in school. She loved different corners of the school which were sources of her inspiration and expected the art lesson. Yet other kids’ laughing at her dress made her sad. She wanted to change the situation, but didn’t know how to go about it. Despite this, she would quietly help someone with a hard math problem or pick up garbage on her way home. She always found comfort in her drawing. In the middle of the term, an art contest on the theme of “My Dream” was to be held, which would select the top three winners, and the head teacher would award them prizes. This news thrilled the children, Amy in particular. They enthusiastically registered for the contest and, after thoughtful consideration, finished their own art pieces. The contest organizers gathered all submissions one week later and set up an exhibit showcasing every participant’s work in the school gym.
The school gym was filled with viewers as the walls displayed the efforts of the young artists. There were paintings of colorful landscapes where the sun burst through thick clouds. Some students had created portraits (肖像) of their heroes. In this sea of creativity, one painting stood out. In the painting, a community garden was drawn, a place where people from all walks of life were planting seeds together. The heartfelt work drew the viewers into a world where every detail had meaning. The exhibition would last a week and all the students and teachers could vote their favorite work.

Passage 8
The school picnic day was on Sunday, and on Saturday morning I decided to ask Mum some questions. As soon as Mum took the last bite of her toast, I decided I couldn’t wait for her any longer and asked, “Mum, where is Italy?”
My mum pushed up her glasses and looked at me with her head to one side. Then she said, “Italy is an European country which is very far away from here, my love. Why do you want to know that?” I shrugged(耸肩), “That’s where Mike, the new boy in our class is from.”
She nodded and invited me to go to fetch the geography book. The book was big and Mum always kept the very big books on the bottom shelf of our bookcase. I watched as Mum flipped to the index and then to a page near the middle. “Here we go,” she said, turning the map around to show me. I let my finger meet hers where it said the word “Italy” in capital letters. According to the introduction to the country on the page, Mum helped me know more about the country.
“You know, Mum, Mike’s parents are extremely busy working in the downtown. He seldom eats regularly let alone (更不用说) have his native foods. I really want him to be very happy for his first picnic with us…” I paused and observed Mum, worried that Mum would think that it was silly and maybe a waste of money buying food only to give it away. But she didn’t. Instead, she said, “I think that’s a brilliant idea! Go and get ready, and we’ll head out on a big shopping.”

He recognized that it was Lily’s too much worry about grades that was having a bad effect on her and the parent-child relationships.

Passage 10
They don’t mean it
Our family moved here from China two years ago, and we thought we were pretty well adjusted to American ways. This year my parents decided to give a party on Chinese New Year and invite some of our American friends.
The party went pretty well. Our guests were amazed at the flavor of all the special foods. After the dinner, they thanked us for showing them what a real Chinese New Year dinner was like.
“I loved the dishes. You and the girls must have spent hours doing all the work!” Mrs. O’Meara said to my mother.
“The girls helped with the cutting and I’m sorry they did such a terrible job.” said Mother.
I heard a little gasp(倒吸气) from my friend Kim O’Meara, who stared wide-eyes at Mother. When I asked what the matter was, she told me she just didn’t understand why my mother said so.
I had to laugh. “She doesn’t mean it! It’s just the way she talks.”
Seeing her still confused look, I went on explaining, “In China, parents consider it good manners to deny praises about their children. Otherwise, it would be the same as bragging(自夸).” Kim seemed a little hesitant, but she nodded anyway.
That Easter, the O’Mearas invited our family for dinner. Mrs. O’Meara cooked a huge ham which we enjoyed a lot. As Mrs. O’Meara started cutting up the cake for dessert, Mother said, “I’m not sure if I can eat one more bite. That was the best ham I’ve ever tasted!”
“Aw, that ham was terrible,” said Kim. “I bet you could do a lot better, Mrs. Yang.”

Passage 11
On Nov.18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came to give a concert on stage at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City.
If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio(小儿麻痹) as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and slowly, is an awesome sight. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play.
By now, the audience is used to this practice. They remain silent while he undoes the clasps on his legs. They wait until he is ready to play.
But this time, something went wrong. Just as he finished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it snap - it went off like gunfire across the room.
I here was no mistaking what that sound meant.
People who were there that night thought to themselves: “We figured that he would have to get up, put on the clasps again, pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage -to either find another violin or else find another string for this one.”
But he didn’t. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra began, and he played from where he had left off. And he played with such passion and such power and such purity as they had never heard before.
Anyone knows it is impossible to play a symphonic work with just three strings. But that night, he was seen modulating, changing, and recomposing the piece in his head. He was detuning the strings to get new sounds they had never made before.

Passage 12
After getting up late on a sleepy Sunday, I saw my dad at the kitchen table reading the Sunday edition of the local newspaper. I made a sandwich and sat down next to him, asking him what was new. He turned sadly to me and said that the municipal council(市政委员会) was planning to introduce a measure to pull down the community garden nearby. He mentioned that he used to work on it with his dad, so the place had some fond childhood memories for him.
He then put down the paper, walked over to the closet and-after a bit of searching-pulled out a thick, black binder(活页夹). Inside, there was a whole bunch of old photographs. After thumbing through a few pages, my dad found the one of him and his dad together at the community garden, just like he’d said. “Wow, your cheeks were super rosy back then!” I said, surprised.
With nothing planned for the afternoon, my dad and I decided to take a trip over to the community garden to see how it was doing these days. Not great, as it turned out. Crumpled (皱巴巴的) soda cans, cigarette butts (烟头) and other trash were everywhere. Pots of soil were still there, but what few plants remained were either dead or dying.
We looked at each other and knew what we had to do. After gathering some tools and garbage bags, we went straight to work cleaning up the place. I phoned up some of my school friends and, soon enough, a half-dozen people were collecting trash bags and sweeping paths. Someone had even brought bags of fresh seeds and soil along with new flowers, so we uprooted the old dead plants and flowers and planted anew.
After only a few hours, the community garden looked totally changed. Despite our hard work, there was still the matter of the upcoming council vote. We created a plan: take photos of the garden and spread the news about the vote. Using the photographs, we would then collect signatures (签名) to show continued local interest and then present these to the council.

Passage 13
We moved to our new place, and everything was new and unfamiliar. I didn’t have new friends, so most of the time when I was free at home, I stayed with Socky, my cat and friend. One morning in winter, it was very cold outside and people mainly stayed indoors to keep warm. I called our pregnant(怀孕的) cat to be fed, but she didn’t come. I thought she’d probably found somewhere to have her kitten s and would turn up later. But she didn’t.
When Socky still didn’t come at dinnertime, I anxiously asked my mum, “Where is Socky?” But she didn’t know either. The next day, Socky still didn’t appear and I really started to worry. Socky had kept me company for years, and she was just like my family member.
Socky had given birth to some lovely kittens before. She had a habit of having her kittens in strange places, so first I checked all her hidey-holes where she used to stay but she wasn’t in any of them. I became extremely anxious. What could have happened? “Where are you, dear Socky?” Having waited for hours again, I couldn’t sit still. Thinking over all the possible places where she could shelter herself, I rechecked under the house, then in the garage under and behind old books, every place I could think of, but still no Socky.
After lunch I took some food scraps (剩饭) with me in case I found her, then began searching the back shed, which was huge and filled with cardboard boxes full of junk and empty tea-chests (茶叶箱). After about an hour of moving cardboard boxes from one place to another and back again, I was tired out. I sat down on an upturned tea-chest to have a rest when I heard faint mewing (喵). I put my head up against each of the tea-chests, pressing my ear against the plywood (夹板) so I could catch the faint sounds. I had to move each one carefully before I could look inside.

Passage 14
Caught in a flood
Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her nervous. The wind roared the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!”
“No” said Dad. “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”
“We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really scared!” cried Mary. “We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the caraway!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside.
“Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time. “The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do?

Passage 15
An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this? The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It’s a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?” At this time, some expression of anger was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? Are you not able to understand this?”
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page: Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my innocent son.

Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would finish in the bottom half. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end.
Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3,000-meter challenge in my city — at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or come close to winning.
I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their fanilies to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship.
It was a heartwarming program.I wanted to support it, so I showed up, paid the entrance fee, had a number pinned(把……别住) on my back, and moved over to the starting line. There, I waited with about 300 other runners for the race to begin. I was nervous. Would I be the last one to finish a race again? Could I even finish the race? I wondered.
Before long, someone spoke into a microphole, “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale(秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale. A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number that was on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so,and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.
Not expecting the award, I ran towards the starting line, never realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.
Paragraph 1:
Soon after, the race started.

【答案】
A week later, she got an mail back for her admission. Nola was excited to study further for her dream and with her granddaughter. In the beginning, she met many difficulties because those courses were so complex for her. But she never gave up. She made use of her time to turn to anyone around her for help, including her granddaughter. She overcame all the difficulties to study on her own time, at her own pace. When Nola had 30 hours of school left to complete, she moved 100 miles away from her farm to study. Finally, she got her master’s degree of Fort Hays State University.
On the day of her graduation, Nola was chosen to be a spokesperson. She said what kept her young was her passion for learning everything she could about the world. It was about seeing everyone she met as a teacher. She added, “Age is just a number, as long as you have your mind and health.” Nola lived a long and productive life, but her work was still not done. As the sun bent its great arc across the sky, Nola was at work, plowing the fields of her mind.

Seeing my father’s response, I felt more ashamed-of my bad behavior.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Seeing my father’s response, I felt more ashamed of my bad behavior. He came close to me, sat down and asked me why I behaved like that in a gentle voice. Indeed, what my mother did was just a small mistake that wasn’t worth mentioning but I made a fuss. I realized it was my failure in controlling my temper that caused displeasure. I felt terribly sorry for having damaged my father’s T-shirt. On that day, I decided not to let anger take me anymore. Whenever I felt the urge to lose temper, I would try to hold my breath until I calmed down or transfer my attention to let out my bad emotion. Gradually, I changed to a better person, more patient, tolerant and compassionate.

【答案】
As my mom tried to figure out which exit we should go through, she noticed my pale face. “Alison,” her voice sounded alarmed, but also far away. “You look like you’re going to pass out. Are you OK?” I couldn’t answer with more than a mumble. My mom was suddenly speeding things up, taking charge and locating the nearest exit. She told me to wait inside. She soon drove the car over and took me to the hospital. Later, I was told this was a symptom of malnutrition. I was told to visit the doctor twice a week.
Incidents (发生的事情) like the one in the store were in my thoughts as my parents had a talk with me that morning—the morning when I refused to see the doctor regularly. I finally decided to see the doctor instead of going to school. Dad was right—without health, nothing would I own, including that morning’s important exams or Spanish class. Before, I suffered a lot from my eating disorder and weakness. Now, I put my wants of a healthy body above the needs of a slim girl. Remembering the doctor’s advice, I add healthy foods to my meals and keep doing proper sports. I become both happy and strong.

Seeing me stand there with the money in my hand, Roy felt panicked. I became very angry, asking him if it was the money that we raised last week. He went bright red, admitting that he had stolen it in a low voice. I slowly calmed down and hugged him, telling him that I would be willing to help him overcome his difficulty. He wept and then we had a sincere talk face to face. At last we agreed to return the money.
We went to the headteacher, Mr White, together. In the teacher’s office, Roy returned the money to Mr White, and guaranteed not to do such things again. Though Mr White was so surprised that he couldn’t believe his eyes, he praised him for his courage and correction and told him if he had difficulty with finance he would be ready to help him. Roy was moved to tears. After that, we became good friends again. We trusted each other and shared sorrow and happiness together.

【答案】
Suddenly, I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. I heard voices and a warm hand took mine. I looked up and saw concerned faces. Jim and several other classmates had come after me. “Please, don’t drop out...” they said and tried to comfort me. Later, the teacher found the troublemaker Peter, who loved making silly tricks. And he apologized to me. Encouraged by my friendly teacher and so many kind classmates, I went back onstage and finished the scene with no further interruptions.
The following Thanksgiving day, we were ready for the play. Throughout the performance, we could hear laughter from the audience from time to time. When the performance was over, they gave us a big round of applause. In the following weeks, schoolmates often came up to say, “You were good!” I was glad my hard work and determination as well as many people’s support had helped me to perform successfully. It positively shaped my later life.

【答案】
Then a sudden technical failure caused her background music to cut out. The sudden silence echoed through the hall, and Sarah’s heart skipped a beat. Panic threatened to overwhelm her, but she remembered Mrs Caroline’s words: “The true power of your voice lies not in the accompaniment but in the emotions you convey.” Gathering all her courage, Sarah closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and continued singing. Her pure, unwavering voice resonated through the now silent auditorium, capturing everyone’s attention. Enchanted, the crowd began to clap, building into a rapturous applause.
When she stepped off the stage, Sarah recognized a familiar figure among the crowd. It was Mrs Caroline, her eyes glistening with tears of pride and joy. As they embraced, Sarah felt a surge of gratitude for the woman who had believed in her when she didn’t fully believe in herself. “You did it, Sarah,” Mrs Caroline whispered, her voice choked with emotion. Surrounded by her peers, teachers, and parents who were now beaming with admiration, Sarah knew she had discovered a strength within her that could conquer any fear. And as the applause continued, Sarah felt a sense of belonging and accomplishment that she would carry with her for a lifetime.

【答案】
Finally came the day when the winners were announced. The head teacher started with the third place winner followed by a boy in the second place. Then the students waited with bated breath for the first place winner to be announced. “First place goes to — Amy!” said the head teacher. After a moment of silence, the crowd clapped. Amy stepped onto the stage to accept the prize, shocked and delighted. When Amy explained her intention of spreading the idea of unity and hope, everyone was moved. After that, things changed.
The children who had laughed at Amy started to see her in a new way. They got to know the real Amy — her kindness and her dreams. She wasn’t alone anymore. During breaks, kids crowded around her to see her create pictures, which made her classmates eager to try drawing with their own thoughts, too. Amy’s art became well-known outside of school as well. A local gallery asked to exhibit her best painting. As Amy made more art, she became more confident. Her art changed her life and how others saw art and the world.

【答案】
I got ready so quickly that morning that I thought I must have beaten a world record. In five minutes I had my trousers and T-shirt pulled on, and hurriedly emptied my piggy bank. With all the money I saved carefully put in my pocket, I rushed to meet my smiling Mum at the front gate. We went to stands of fresh fruits and vegetables, selecting some for making pizza. Proudly looking at the products, Mum and I drove back home in high spirits. I could picture the perfect pizza which my mother was expert in cooking and the new boy's amazed face.
We gathered on the grass on Sunday morning and I saw the Italian boy immediately. I waved my hand to draw Mike’s attention. He looked around and finally made sure that he was my target. Shy and quiet, he approached me with a light-hearted pace. I patted the place beside me, gestured him to sit down and unpacked his native food. He hesitated at first but later focused his eyes on my sincere face and gave me a broad smile. What a beautiful day it was! We enjoyed the delicious pizza together and came to understand each other by sharing different experiences. No one would resist the sincere kindness.

One day, after receiving a lower grade than she expected on an important test. Lily was falling apart. Sad and overwhelmed, she even started considering her failure was due to her parents. She quarreled with her parents and kept them out of her room.
Lily’s parents turned to the school teacher Mr. Thompson for help. They poured out all the bad present situations to him. Mr. Thompson was a professional teacher with a deep understanding of the importance of a balanced lifestyle. He recognized that it was Lily’s too much worry about grades that was having a bad effect on her and the parent-child relationships.

【答案】
“Believe me, Lily.” Mr. Thompson said, and finally Lily agreed to give it a try. For the next six months, Mr. Thompson and Lily would go for a run every day after school. They started with short distances, gradually increasing the length and intensity of their runs. In the beginning, Lily struggled to keep up, but as time went by, she found herself becoming more and more engaged in this practice with Mr. Thompson. As Lily continued her daily runs, something remarkable started to happen. Lily’s once imitable personality slowly began to disappear, and she apologized to her parents for her former rudeness. Her grades remained consistently high with a changed lifestyle.
Seeing Lily’s change, Mr. Thompson recommended her to give speech to her classmates. In her speech, Lily expressed her gratitude to Mr. Thompson who helped her get rid of stress and build a good relationship with her parents. She explained that academic success was just one aspect of the identity and that physical and mental well-being were equally crucial. She said engaging in sports and exercise not only improved her overall health but also enhanced her ability to handle pressure. Through her own change, she encouraged her classmates to join her for runs, advocating the integration of sports into their lives.

Yang.”

【答案】
There was a stunned(震惊的) silence around the table. Kim was on the receiving end of a cold stare from Mrs. O’Meara, whose face reddened with embarrassment. I was also shocked at my friend’s mean remark. Clearing my throat, I finally asked, “What made you talk like that to your mother?” Kim whirled around, seemingly furious“But you were the one who told me that saying nice things about your own family was the same as bragging!” she stuttered. “I was just trying to act modest!”
I finally knew how Kim had misunderstood what I had said.“Listen, Kim,” I took her hands in mine to calm her down, “Chinese parents might say critical things about their children to show modesty but young people are always expected to be respectful to the elders.” Hearing this, Kim sighed deeply, her cheeks flushed. The awkward silence was soon dispelled as the misunderstanding was erased. Drooping her head, Kim apologized for her impolite behavior. Mrs. O’Meara winked at her, joking, “That’s all right. We know you didn’t mean it!”

He has prepared all his life to make music on a violin of four strings.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
When he finished, there was an awesome silence in the room. And then people rose and cheered. There was an extraordinary outburst of applause from every corner of the auditorium. We were all on our feet, screaming and cheering, doing everything we could to show how much we appreciated what he had done with just three strings on the stage. We were all astonished by his exquisite skills and brilliant performances.
He has prepared all his life to make music on a violin of four stings. All of a sudden, in the middle of a concert he found himself with only three strings; so he made music with three strings. The music he made that night with just three strings was more beautiful, more sacred, more memorable, than any that he had ever made before, when he had four strings. Perhaps our task in this fast changing world is to make music, at first with all that we have, and then, when that is no longer possible, to make music with what we have left.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
After two weeks of photo-taking and signature-collecting, it came time to present at the local council meeting. Fortunately, we were well-prepared for what we had to say. Wearing our best suits, we made our case for the community garden. We pointed out not only the historical value of the space, but also the economic and social benefits of the garden. Plus, the dozens of signatures we had collected showed that people still cared about the garden, with some people even agreeing to volunteer and do regular maintenance again. After hearing our presentation, the council members held their own debate on whether to go through with the previously intended plan.
In the end, our efforts paid off. The council finally decided to vote down the measure, thus saving the community garden that we had worked so hard on. My dad and I hugged each other in joy. After weeks and months passed by and as spring turned to summer, the community garden was thriving again, with volunteers working in the garden among countless fresh vegetables and flowers. On one of our visits to the community garden, my dad and I took a picture together. This picture is going to look great in the binder, I thought, right next to my dad’s old photograph.

Finally, I found Socky and her three tiny kittens. The sound was coming from a tea-chest that was tucked away in the darkest corner of the shed. I carefully lifted the lid, and there she was, with her eyes wide open, looking at me with a mix of curiosity and relief. The kittens were so small, their eyes not yet open, and they were nestled closely together for warmth. I gently picked up each kitten, checking they were all well, and then carefully carried them, along with their mother, back to our warm house. I prepared a cozy spot for them with blankets and a soft pillow, ensuring they were comfortable and safe. The joy of finding them safe and sound filled my heart, and I couldn’t help but smile at the thought of having new little companions to love and care for.

【答案】
After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad made a decision. They believed that they should stay in the house. They thought it would be really dangerous to try to walk through the water to get to higher ground. “Mary, we’ll have to go upstairs and wait there,” said Mum. “OK, Mum. If that’s what you think is best,” Mary replied uncertainly. So they went upstairs and waited. Downstairs, water started flooding into the living room and kitchen. All three of them were nervous, but at least they had disaster supplies, including food and drinking water.
Finally, the rain stopped. But Mary and her family couldn’t leave while the house was still flooded. They listened to the radio and learnt that rescue workers in boats were coming to rescue people who were trapped in their homes. They waited for a boat to arrive at their house. Their home had been badly damaged, but they were all happy to be alive. About half an hour later, the boat arrived and took Mary and her parents to a safe place.

Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father.

Paragraph 2:

【答案】
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just 4 times! The son thought to himself: If I attain old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding?
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said aloud, “I promise to make you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best way.”

Passage 16
I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running.

Paragraph 2:
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Soon after, the race started. While I was running, I saw many runners pass me on the way. Minutes later, I already felt tired. However, to encourage those in need, I tried to show the best of me, without worrying about the result. I kept moving forward as fast as I could. After most runners finished the race, I finally made it to the finish line. Despite the tiredness, I was satisfied. Shortly after the race, the award ceremony began and several awards were presented.
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced. Confused and excited, I walked up to the winner’s platform and was awarded a medal. As the crowd cheered and clapped loudly, I felt warmth in my heart. After the ceremony, I learned from my friend Jim that there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds. Although I only beat one person, Jim praised me for my determination, courage, and kindness. Honestly, I was proud of myself. This race increased my love for running and my confidence in myself.
