And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List (WHL). These include remains of ancient cultures like Cuzco in Peru or the rock city of Petra in Jordan as well as old city centers such as Rome in Italy. Also common are places of artistic or cultural significance, like the Stonehenge stone circle in England. But the WHL contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious. Let’s look at a few of the more unusual sites on the WHL and why it is important to preserve them. Citadel of Haiti These monuments were built at the end of the 19th century when Haiti became independent and the many thousands of black slaves in Haiti were free for the first time. These ex-slaves built the monuments, which the WHL describes as “a universal symbol of liberty”. Borders of France and Spain This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations. But it is also an area of small farms. The WHL has listed the site because it shows us about past European society through its landscape of villages, farms, fields, up land pastures and mountain roads. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway This railway in India was opened in 1881 and is still operating today. It crosses a difficult area of mountain landscape and it is a great example of railway engineering. The WHL says that it is “the first, and still the most outstanding, example of a hill passenger railway.” The city of Brasilia Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls it “a land mark in the history of town planning”. The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time so that they would harmonize with each other. 1. What’s the function of the examples of World Heritage Sites in paragraph 1? A. To highlight the importance of WHL. B. To exemplify sites of artistic and cultural value. C. To compare the differences between various sites. D. To draw readers’ attention to more unique sites on the WHL. 2. Who built Citadel of Haiti? A. Former slaves. B. Citizens in Haiti. C. Active revolutionaries. D. Haiti government. 3. Which site will attract a town planner most? A. Citadel of Haiti. B. Borders of France and Spain. C. The city of Brasilia. D. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. D 2. A 3. 根据第一段“These include remains of ancient cultures like Cuzco in Peru or the rock city of Petra in Jordan as well as old city centers such as Rome in Italy. Also common are places of artistic or cultural significance, like the Stonehenge stone circle in England. But the WHL contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious. Let’s look at a few of the more unusual sites on the WHL and why it is important to preserve them.(其中包括秘鲁的库斯科、约旦的佩特拉岩城等古文化遗迹,以及意大利的罗马等古老城市中心。同样常见的还有具有艺术或文化意义的地方,比如英国的巨石阵。但是WHL包含了很多不那么明显的地点。让我们来看看世界自然保护区一些比较不寻常的地点,以及为什么保护它们很重要。)”可知,第一段列举的世界遗产的例子的作用是吸引读者对世界遗产名录上更多的独特的地方的关注。故选D。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据Citadel of Haiti部分的“These ex-slaves built the monuments, which the WHL describes as “a universal symbol of liberty”.(这些曾经是奴隶的人建造了纪念碑,WHL将其描述为“自由的普遍象征”。)” 故选A。 根据The city of Brasilia部分的“The WHL calls it “a land mark in the history of town planning”.(WHL称其为“城市规划史上的一个里程碑”。)” C。 B When I was a little boy growing up, my Mom, Dad, brothers and I lived in my Nana’s old house. It was surrounded by four huge vegetable gardens. And around the house so many flowers were planted. It was so beautiful there in the spring and summer. That wasn’t all, though. On the back porch Nana had dozens of potted plants hanging on hooks. She watered them, talked to them and nurtured them. And in the winter she would carry them all inside and set them on shelves near the windows of our enclosed front porch. There with a little water and a lot of love she kept them alive, green, and growing even during the coldest, darkest months. As a boy I was puzzled by all the effort she put into them. I understood the vegetable gardens. They helped to feed the family all winter long. I even understood the flowers around the house. They were pretty and smelled so sweet in the summer months. The reason she put so much effort into caring for those potted plants, however, eluded me. They didn’t give us any food and they rarely had any flowers on them. They remained a mystery to my child’s mind. Now as I’ve grown older I am beginning to understand why my Nana had those potted plants. It is the same reason I have so many pictures of sunrises and forests hanging in my home. They remind me during the dark, cold, winter months full of bare trees and yellow grass that light, love, and growth still exist. They remind me that Spring will come again. They remind me that God loves us and is still with us even when the earth doesn’t show it. Today I see Nana’s potted plants in a new light. They are worth every bit of the love and care she put into them. But what tells me most about light and love is Nana herself. She is light to my soul even in my darkest times. And her love lives on in my heart even if she is in Heaven. May we all learn to love as she loved, shine as she shined, and live as she lived. 4. Which of the following is close in meaning to the underlined word “eluded” in paragraph 2? A. Upset. B. Misguided. C. Confused. D. Distracted. 5. Why was Nana fond of potted plants? A. They were a sign of hope. B. They resembled sunrise and forests. C. They constantly kept Nana company. D. They were portable and easy to nurture. 6. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage? A. To advocate growing potted plants. B. To sing the praise of Nana’s spirit and love. C. To stress the benefits of a positive lifestyle. D. To recall beautiful memories spent with Nana. 7. What’s the type of the passage? A. A non-fiction. B. A book review. C. An agricultural leaflet. D. A celebrity biography. C 5. A 6. B 7. 根据划线词前文“The reason she put so much effort into caring for those potted plants, however, eluded me.(然而,她花这么多精力照顾那些盆栽植物的原因,却eluded我摸)”和划线词后文“They didn’t give us any food and they rarely had any flowers on them. They remained a mystery to my child’s mind.(它们没有给我们任何食物,而且它们也很少开花。它们对我孩子来说仍然是个谜)”可知,作者对于Nana费心照顾这些盆栽感到困惑,因为作者认为它们没有贡献任何食物,而且也很少开花。故划线词意思是“困惑的”,故选C。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Now as I’ve grown older I am beginning to understand why my Nana had those potted plants. It is the same reason I have so many pictures of sunrises and forests hanging in my home. They remind me during the dark, cold, winter months full of bare trees and yellow grass that light, love, and growth still exist. They remind me that Spring will come again. They remind me that God loves us and is still with us even when the earth doesn’t show it.(现在,随着年龄的增长,我开始明白为什么我的祖母会有那些盆栽。这和我家里挂了那么多日出和森林的照片的原因是一样的。它们提醒我,在光秃秃的树木和黄草丛生的黑暗、寒冷的冬天,光、爱和生长仍然存在。它们提醒我春天还会再来。它们提醒我,上帝爱我们,即使在地球上没有表现出来的时候,上帝仍然与我们同在)”可知,Nana喜欢盆栽是因为它们是希望的象征。故选A。 根据最后一段“Today I see Nana’s potted plants in a new light. They are worth every bit of the love and care she put into them. But what tells me most about light and love is Nana herself. She is light to my soul even in my darkest times. And her love lives on in my heart even if she is in Heaven. May we all learn to love as she loved, shine as she shined, and live as she lived.(今天,我以新眼光看待奶奶的盆栽。 A。 C It seems we can’t get off the planet fast enough. Two thirds of NASA’s money is spent on manned space exploration, and that number will grow with the USA’s decision to send a man to Mars in 2037. We’ve seen all there is to see on Earth, right? Wrong. The final place is here, under the surface of the sea. Heading down into the ocean, human limits are quickly reached. At 200 metres, the water is as black as a moonless night. Most nuclear submarines (核潜艇) would implode (内爆) before they reach 1 km down. At 3 km — still less than the average depth of the ocean — there’s a good chance that you’ll discover a new species. The deepestdiving whales go no further. At the very bottom, about 11 km down, lies the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. Eighteen humans have walked on the Moon, but only three have seen the Deep with their own eyes. Yet things live down there. Big things. A very loud sound was once heard and scientists suggested that it was produced by an animal bigger than a blue whale the largest creature known on the planet. In the late 1990s, a deepwater submarine was dropped in the Southern Ocean, and passing 4,000 metres, it discovered something huge passing under it. Surprised? Don’t be. The ocean covers 70% of the planet’s surface and we’ve studied less than 5% of it. We know more about the dark side of the Moon than about the bottom of the sea. One reason that we explore space is to find evidence of other life forms. The search for life outside of Earth is important, but robots can look under the dry rocks of Mars better than humans. They’re absolutely important for doing ocean research too, but they can’t look under the sea. The cost of exploration is rising, but the results would benefit all our lives. Understanding the oceans will help us find new sources of food, drugs and energy. Perhaps now it's time to begin a new period of sea exploration. Manned exploration of space is science fiction The adventure of the deep sea is science fact. 8 What do the examples in Paragraph 2 suggest? A. Sea exploration is no easy task. B. Nuclear submarines need to be improved. C. The ocean is far deeper than people expected. D. The condition under the sea is similar to that on the Moon. 9. What do we know about the Challenger Deep? A. Blue whales live there. B. No one has ever been there. C. People are terrified by the sight of it. D. It is the deepest known location on Earth. 10. What does the author think of the discovery in the Southern Ocean? A. It’s surprising. B. It’s no wonder. C. It’s worrying. D. It’s no success. 11. What does the author want to tell us? A. Space exploration is of little value. B. We spend too much money on space travel. C. Humans’ success lies in how much they explore the sea. D. The ocean is the place where we should make our efforts. A 9. D 10. B 11. Eighteen humans have walked on the Moon, but only three have seen the Deep with their own eyes. 故选A项。 At the very bottom, about 11 km down, lies the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean.可知,the Challenger Deep位于海底大概11公里的位置,是the Mariana Trench最深的部分。 由第四段it discovered something huge passing under it. Surprised? Don’t be. The ocean covers 70% of the planet’s surface and we’ve studied less than 5% of it. We know more about the dark side of the Moon than about the bottom of the sea. D Nowadays, countries are eager to get more electric cars on the road because moving away from gas-powered vehicles is vital to fighting climate change. China says that most new vehicles sold by 2035 will be electric. The United Kingdom will ban new gas-powered cars in 2030. One of the world’s major automakers, General Motors (GM), announced that it would stop selling gas-powered cars by 2035. The key to an electric future is batteries. Automakers are racing to pack the most energy into the smallest one. The lithium-ion battery is what powers our mobile devices, which can be recharged again and again. Making these batteries has an environmental cost. Lithium is taken from the earth, like the oil used to make gasoline. But the long-term cost is much smaller. “Once you burn gasoline, you can’t recycle it,” says Jessika Trancik, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “But when you use up a battery, you can still recycle the material.” It’s up to governments to make electric cars accessible to everyone. National policies can help. In the United States, an electric Chevy Volt costs about $35, 000. Trancik says charging stations must also be made widely available. As part of an effort to fight climate change, America plans to build half a million of them in the US by 2030. She hopes enough charging stations will be built soon. “It’s important to put chargers where many different people can have access to them,” she says, “not just wealthier people.” Last year, almost 5% of approximately 67 million new cars sold world widewere electric. For Venkat Viswanathan, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, green electricity is part of the solution to climate change, and electric cars are just the beginning. He sees a future of solar powered homes and electric flying cars. “Soon, a plug in vehicle might be as cheap as a gas-powered car. It is now abundantly clear that electric is the future,” he says. “It will be a totally new world.” 12. Why are countries eager to promote electric cars? A. To reduce the cost of vehicles. B. To increase the availability of charging stations. C. To promote solar-powered homes. D. To deal with climate change. 13. What does Trancik indicate about charging stations in Paragraph 3? A. They should come down in price. B. They may be unfairly laid out. C. Enough of them have been built. D. They favor more ordinary people. 14. What can be inferred from Viswanathan’s words? A. Gas-powered cars will be cheaper. B. The price of batteries will drop sharply. C. Electric vehicles will beat climate change. D. Green electricity will be widely used. 15. Which word best describes Trancik’s attitude to the lithium-ion battery? A. Positive. B. Skeptical. C. Conservative. D. Disapproving. D 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第一段中“Nowadays, countries are eager to get more electric cars on the road because moving away from gas-powered vehicles is vital to fighting climate change.(如今,各国都渴望让更多的电动汽车上路,因为摆脱燃油汽车对应对气候变化至关重要。)” 根据第三段中“It’s important to put chargers where many different people can have access to them,” she says, “not just wealthier people.”(“重要的是要把充电站建在许多不同的人都可以使用的地方,”她说,“而不仅仅是富人。”)” 根据最后一段中“For Venkat Viswanathan, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, green electricity is part of the solution to climate change, and electric cars are just the beginning. He sees a future of solar powered homes and electric flying cars.“Soon, a plug in vehicle might be as cheap as a gas-powered car. It is now abundantly clear that electric is the future,” he says. “It will be a totally new world.”(卡内基梅隆大学机械工程教授Venkat Viswanathan认为,绿色电力是气候变化解决方案的一部分,而电动汽车仅仅是个开始。 根据第二段中““Once you burn gasoline, you can’t recycle it,” says Jessika Trancik, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “But when you use up a battery, you can still recycle the material.”(“一旦你燃烧了汽油,你就不能回收了,”麻省理工学院的研究员Jessika Trancik说。“但当电池用完时,你仍然可以回收这种材料。”)”可推知,在Trancik看来,锂电池用完可以回收,所以他对锂电池持积极的态度。故选A。 Science fiction short stories are a genre of short stories with a plot that deals with science and the latest technology. E. Regularly reading sci-fi stories allows you to spend your spare time meaningfully. F. The more science fiction stories you read, the wider your vocabulary will become. G. As you read through a story’s plots, you will be able to imagine the plots in your mind vividly. D 17. F 18. G 19. E 20. 【16题详解】 上文“Science fiction short stories are a genre of short stories with a plot that deals with science and the latest technology. This type of story is suitable for young people who are excited about learning and exploring new things.”(科幻短篇小说是情节与科学和最新技术相关的一类短篇小说,适合热衷于学习和探索新事物的年轻人。) 和“Spend your free time meaningfully.”(让你的空闲时间过得有意义。) 【17题详解】 上文“Every time you come across a difficult word, you should look it up in the dictionary and find out its meaning.”(每当你遇到难词时,你应该查阅词典,找出词义。) 【18题详解】 上文“There are times when you find your imagination is not creative enough and you get stuck when you are trying to come up with some ideas for a creative project.”(有时候你会觉得自己缺乏想象力,试图为某个创意项目提供一些想法却毫无思路。) 提供思路枯竭、缺乏想象力时可以阅读小说,让脑海呈现小说情节的画面,从而提高想象力,下文“By improving your imagination, you will be able to create better games, create more creative arts and write better stories of your own.”(通过提高想象力,你就能创作出更棒的游戏,创作出更好的艺术作品,写出属于你自己的更好的小说。) ,下文“When you read a sci-fi story, you are learning something instead of wasting time doing things that will not benefit you.”(当你阅读科幻小说时,你是在学习,而非虚度光阴。) 下文“If you read a lot of sci-fi stories, you will have things to talk to people in conversations.”(当你阅读了大量的科幻小说,你就能和他人有得一聊。) 说明该段落主要阐述的是阅读科幻小说和谈资有关,B项“something to talk about”与下文“have things to talk to people in conversations”相一致,所以B项符合题意。 The arrival of spring always means a trip to the bamboo forest for Kaitlyn Hennacy and her family, followed by an afternoon making bamboo buns (包子). My brother and I were in the family room watching television when my mom came in to tell us the bad news. I wasn’t really sure what a heart operation meant, but I could tell it wasn’t a good thing. Juliana’s family was on a tight budget (预算), so was mine. My parents’ faces were full of worry and tears, and that was enough to make me cry, too. When we went to see Juliana in the hospital, she was lying in bed,and she had tubes (管子) and other things hooked to her. It was confusing and scary. The treatments continued, but Juliana was weaker and weaker. Every time I visited her, it was hard for me to believe her change. She seemed to lose all her strength and her lovely face turned pale. She lost a lot of weight even though she had proper food. As a child, I really couldn’t understand what the doctors were doing to her—it seemed like they were making her feel worse not better. Seeing my cousin in so much pain made me feel like my own heart was aching. Something needed to be done. I knew I wanted to help her get better faster, but at eight years old, I wasn’t sure how I could make a difference—I just knew I had to do something to help her. One night after we visited Juliana, all the way home I couldn’t stop thinking about her. A hospital can be a very scary, cold place. I imagined how lonely Juliana must have felt lying there during the night. When we got home, I sat down at our kitchen table. I always liked writing stories and drawing pictures, and I started working at it like I had done so many other nights. But this night was different—I was thinking about Juliana. I thought, “Juliana is going to receive rehabilitation training (康复训练) but money is tight. What if I can sell my drawings? Then I can raise money to help her get well faster.” When I told my parents, they thought it was a wonderful idea, but then we came up with an even better one. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Soon, we made enough money to pay for Juliana’s rehabilitation training. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: When I told my parents, they thought it was a wonderful idea, but then we came up with an even better one. We would make a cookbook. The very next day, I asked all of our family and friends to send me their favorite food and ways to cook it. To my surprise, everyone jumped at the chance to help. Mom helped to put everything together. Grandma typed while I drew the pictures for it. My idea for a small cookbook quickly grew to over one hundred pages. The local skating club paid for the first printing. We sold almost 300 books in our first week. I couldn’t believe it. Soon, we made enough money to pay for Juliana’s rehabilitation training. Whenever I went to the hospital, Juliana thanked me with a smile. Not only did she thank me in words, but also she made a great effort, carrying out the instructions of her doctor and keeping doing light exercise every day. Soon she regained her strength and recovered. Our stories were shared among other patients. I was really proud that I had tried to make a difference and I made it! 请求:ask/request ②.执行:carry out/perform 情绪类 ①.感谢:show her gratitude/be grateful ②.骄傲:be proud/be filled with pride 【点睛】[高分句型1].Whenever I went to the hospital, Juliana thanked me with a smile.(由whenever引导的状语从句) [高分句型2].Not only did she thank me in words, but also she made a great effort, carrying out the instructions of her doctor and keeping doing light exercise every day.(由Not only开头的倒装句和现在分词作状语) 听力:1-5BBCCC 6-10ACACC 11-15CBCAC 16-20CBCAB 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 普集高中2023—2024学年度第二学期高 二 年级第 3 次月考 ( 英语 )试题(卷) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共 5 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 7.5 分) 听下面 5 段对话。 1. D To draw readers’ attention to more unique sites on the WHL. 2. Who built Citadel of Haiti? A. Former slaves. B. Citizens in Haiti. C. Active revolutionaries. D. Haiti government. 3. Which site will attract a town planner most? A. Citadel of Haiti. B. Borders of France and Spain. C. The city of Brasilia. D. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. B When I was a little boy growing up, my Mom, Dad, brothers and I lived in my Nana’s old house. A To advocate growing potted plants. B. To sing the praise of Nana’s spirit and love. C. To stress the benefits of a positive lifestyle. D. To recall beautiful memories spent with Nana. 7. What’s the type of the passage? A A non-fiction. B. A book review. C. An agricultural leaflet. D. A celebrity biography. C It seems we can’t get off the planet fast enough. Big things. A very loud sound was once heard and scientists suggested that it was produced by an animal bigger than a blue whale, the largest creature known on the planet. 8. What do the examples in Paragraph 2 suggest? One night after we visited Juliana all the way home I couldn’t stop thinking about her. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力:1-5BBCCC 6-10ACACC 11-15CBCAC 16-20CBCAB 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
