①It’s always easier to say “Yes” because most of us want to please other people. Somebody asks you to go for a party but you have tests the next day, or to help them although you are busy at the moment, or to join the activities you have no interest at all! Even though your heart is crying NO, you find the word “Yes” come out of your mouth. However, it usually results in anger — not only for the person who asked you, but also for yourself for not being strong enough.
②Lisa Messenger, the Collective Hub CEO, said in her first few years of business, many people asked her to talk over a coffee. Actually, she usually ended up having 20 coffee meetings a week and that stopped her from doing business because she didn’t have time to do her own work.
③Messenger finally learned to refuse like “No, I’m sorry, but I don’t have time.”. She believes if you say “Yes”, you will regret later. Or your heart will be filled with guilt, fear or anger because you feel bad for agreeing to do something you never want to. So you need to be brave enough to say “No” when you’re asked at first.
④Janine Garner, CEO of The LBD Group, believed we need to get very clear about our goals. Unless we work towards our goals, nobody else will care about our time. Garner said, “We may end up saying ‘Yes’ because we feel sorry for somebody who needs us. But we end up having that awful feeling in our heart. You can only achieve the best of you by stopping doing the things that take up your time and don’t add anything towards your goals. Take a good look at the time spent on others, which you really should spend on yourself.”
28. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a survey. D. By asking questions.
29. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Having 20 coffee meetings a week.
B. Being asked to buy coffee 20 times.
C. Talking with others without coffee.
D. Drinking 20 cups of coffee a week.
30. Which opinion would Janine Garner probably agree with?
A. Offering help is the key to make friends.
B. Helping others may make you successful.
C. You’d better say “No” bravely if necessary.
D. People who need us will care about our time.
31. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要谈论了人际交往中的问题。

【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Garner said, ‘We may end up saying ‘Yes’ because we feel sorry for somebody who needs us...which you really should spend on yourself.’可推断出,Janine Garner可能会同意“必要时你最好勇敢地说‘不’”的观点。故选C。
【31题详解】
篇章结构题。通读全文可知,第一段通过举例说明在别人对你有要求时,不能总是随便说“是”;第二和第三段是通过实例说明要学会拒绝;第四段说明Janine Garner的观点:建议人们必要时你最好勇敢地说‘不’”的观点。所以文章的篇章结构如图C所示。故选C。
D
At eleven the next night I bring one hundred thousand dollars in banknotes to the police station and put them into the chief’s hands. He takes the money and leaves, with a confident look in his eyes. The next hour passes slowly and when I hear his footsteps I get up to meet him. His eyes are happy as he says. “We’ve made an agreement! Follow me!”
He picks up a candle and walks down into the basement of the building. Sixty detectives always sleep here, and a group of them are playing cards when we come into the room. I follow him as he walks quickly to the far end of the basement. It is dark and frightening and there is a very bad smell. I feel sick and want to go back. Suddenly Inspector Blunt falls over a large object, shouting as he falls: “Hurray for the police force! Here is your elephant!”
Someone carries me to the office above, where I come to my senses once again. Reporters arrive and detectives open bottles of champagne (香槟) and shake hands and talk warmly.
Naturally the chief is the hero and his happiness is complete. I am happy for him although now I am a beggar, my elephant is dead, and I have no job. Many people congratulate the chief and many detectives say,“ Look at him, the greatest man of the force. There isn’t anything that he can’t find.”
The happy detectives share the fifty thousand dollars and the chief says, as he puts his share into his pocket:
“Enjoy it, boys, you’ve earned it. And more than that, you’ve made the police force famous.”
Then a telegram arrives, which says:
MONROE, MICHIGAN, 10 P.M.
First time I’ve seen a telegraph office in three weeks. Followed the footprints a thousand miles through the forest and they get stronger and bigger every day. Don’t worry I’ll soon have the elephant. I am sure.
DARLEY, Detective.
The chief shouts “three cheers for Darley, one of the best men on the force.” Then he sends a telegraph to Darley, telling him to come home and get his share of the reward.
And so the mystery of the stolen elephant is solved The next day the newspapers are full of good words again.
But, the poor elephant is lost forever. When he was shot, he went into the dark, unfriendly place in the fog, and there, surrounded by his enemies and constant danger of detection, he died of hunger.
The “agreement” cost me one hundred thousand dollars; my detective expenses(费用) were forty-two thousand dollars more. I lost my job. I am a ruined man and a wanderer on the earth. But I still admire that man, the greatest detective in the world. And I will admire him until the day I die.
32. Who wrote the book The Stolen White Elephant?
A. Anna Sewell. B. Mark T. Kevin. C. Robert Campbell. D. Mark Twain.
33. What does the underlined word “congratulate ” in Paragraph 4 possibly mean?
A. hate B. praise C. thank D. mistake
34. Which is the correct order of the following events according to the story?

② The detectives shared the reward.
③ Inspector Blunt found the elephant in the basement.
④ The elephant was shot.
A. ③④②① B. ③②①④ C. ②①④③ D. ④③②①

A. To make fun of the police department and the detectives.
B. To tell us how important the white elephant is.
C. To praise the hard work of the police department and the detectives.
D. To tell the readers how the white elephant is stolen.

“On the very first day of 2024, I saw the snows of Kilimanjaro,”said Xu Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old mountaineer from Hunan.
Xu climbed the tallest peak (峰) in Africa on Jan 1. She even stood on top of Mount Qomolangma last May, making her the youngest Chinese girl to climb to the world’s highest peak from the southern slope.
Xu’s mountaineering journey began on a family trip to Xizang and Sichuan four years ago. Passing by Mount Siguniang in Sichuan, she felt drawn to its beauty and decided to try climbing it. She fell in love with mountaineering right then and there.
For the next few years, Xu did hard training. 【答案】例文
One Thing I’m Proud of
The thing I am proud of is that I visited some old people to make them happy.
It was on a fine autumn afternoon when I was still a teenager. I noticed an old grandma sitting silently under a tall tree in front of her house, looking rather sad and lonely. I went to have a chat with her. After our short conversation, I got to know that all the old women’s sons and daughters were far away from her, making their lives in big cities and she felt lonely. I felt sympathetic for her, and I realized that there were actually many old people like her in the village. So a good idea occurred to me suddenly.
I gathered my friends, and organized them to visit these old people one by one. We sang songs, danced and told jokes to them, which made them happy. One of them was so moved that tears fell down. Caring for those around us and passing our happiness to others are what we have learnt that day. I made it, and I feel really proud of myself that I gave comfort to those who needed most.

A. Offering help is the key to make friends.
B. Helping others may make you successful.
C. You’d better say “No” bravely if necessary.

31. What’s the structure of the passage?

MONROE MICHIGAN, 10 P.M.
And so the mystery of the stolen elephant is solved. The next day the newspapers are full of good words again.

She went to the mountains in Yunnan and Sichuan every month, climbing peaks over 5,000 meters and doing daily physical exercises like running, swimming and rope skipping. All that hard work got her ready for the big challenges she would face on Kilimanjaro.
Above 4,000 meters on Mount Kilimanjaro, the climate is similar to a desert, with big temperature differences. The whole climb took seven days, during which Xu faced unpredictable weather such as rain and strong winds. Staying warm and avoiding heat loss were the main challenges. Xu had to keep an eye on the temperature and change her clothes when the temperature changed.
Looking ahead Xu has set great goals for herself. She plans to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents and visit the North and South Poles by the time she’s 18. That’s her “7+2 program.”
