18 What is the speaker talking about at first?
A. A phenomenon. B. Her favorite icy drink. C. A piece of good news.
19. What does Jorge Serrador say about brain freeze?
A. It can last for two minutes.
B. It is impossible to prevent.
C. The cause of it is unknown yet.
20. What does Elizabeth Loder think of studying brain freeze?
A. Extremely silly. B. Very interesting. C. Quite surprising.
【答案】18 A 19. C 20. B
【解析】
【原文】W: For many people eating ice cream or drinking an icy drink too fast can produce a really painful headache. It usually hits in the front of the brain behind the forehead. The technical name for this phenomenon is cold stimulus headache. But people also refer to it as ice cream headache or brain freeze. The good news is that brain freeze is easy to prevent just eat slowly. The other bit of good news is that these headaches don’t last very long, a minute at most. Jorge Serrador studies brain freeze. He hopes there will be better ways to prevent or treat it. Serrador says no one really knows yet what causes it, but there are some theories. For example, Serrador study has shown that just before the brain freeze hits, there is an increase in blood flow to the front of the brain that increases the volume, and therefore increases some pressure in that area. He says the brain may interpret increased pressure as pain. Harvard medical school headache researcher Elizabeth Loder says it’s not all that surprising to think scientists may learn something important from studying ice cream headaches. Some people think these things are silly. They’re actually really fascinating, says Loder.

In 1972, Barbara Rieco penned a heartfelt children’s book that held her dream within its pages. Despite her best efforts, the manuscript (手稿) faced repeated rejection from publishers, leading her to eventually set aside her dream of becoming a published author.
Little did she know that, decades later, her grandson would turn the dream into reality. Chad Cooper, a production professional, decided to give his grandmother the ultimate Christmas gift — the publication of her treasured book. Visiting her in Baltimore for the holidays, he secretly took her original manuscript, along with the drawings for the book she had obtained from an artist years ago, and transformed them into a beautifully printed book.
On Christmas morning, as Barbara unwrapped the carefully crafted gift, she was overcome with emotion as she realized what the surprise was. The moment, captured and posted online by Chad, quickly resonated (产生共鸣) with viewers, and the video became a hit.
“This is probably the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me in my entire life,” Barbara said in the video, who also gave her grandson a big hug, with tears.
Chad’s thoughtful gesture didn’t just end with the surprise; he also included a link to the book on Amazon, making it available to the public. The response was nothing short of magic — within days, Barbara’s once-forgotten book skyrocketed to the top of Amazon’s bestseller list, earning the coveted spot as a best seller.
Chad filmed the reaction to that news and shared more updates. Barbara said she had been reading every single comment online and wanted to respond to them all but there were thousands of them.
“I’ve bought Barbara Rieco’s book even though I’m 21 and don’t even have kids. I’ve read it and I really like it,” said one viewer.
“My children enjoy reading the book and they recommend me to read it as well,” another viewer commented.

Researchers have developed a material made of collagen protein (胶原蛋白) from pig’s skin, which resembles the human cornea (眼角膜) and restored vision to 20 people. The promising result of the trial brings hope to people suffering from corneal blindness.
An estimated 12.7 million people around the world are blind due to their corneas being damaged or diseased. Their only way of regaining vision is to receive a transplanted cornea from a human donor. But just one in 70 patients receives a cornea transplant. Furthermore, most of them live in low and middle-income countries in which access to treatments is very limited.
To avoid the above disadvantages of traditional cornea treatment, the researchers used collagen protein from pig’s skin. “It is possible to develop a biomaterial that meets all the criteria for being used as human implants (移植物), which can be mass-produced and reach more people with vision problems,” said Professor Neil Lagali. While donated corneas must be used within two weeks, the bioengineered corneas can be stored for up to two years before use. The pig skin used is a byproduct of the food industry, making it easy to access.
The researchers have also developed a new surgical method for treating the disease. No stitches (缝针) are needed with this new method. In a pilot study, 14 of the 20 participants were blind before the operation. After two years, all of the patients regained their sight. Three of the Indian participants who had been blind had perfect vision after the operation.
The researchers also want to study whether the technology can be used to treat more eye diseases, and whether the implant can be adapted to the individual for even greater effectiveness.
28. What is the disadvantage of traditional cornea treatment?
A. Serious side effects. B. Low availability rate.
C. Poor medical equipment. D. Complicated surgical process.
29. What do we know about the biomaterial?
A. It has higher production costs. B. It can be stored for much longer.
C. It is able to be used for several times. D. It can help people prevent vision problems.
30. Which of the following best describes the new surgical method?
A. Successful. B. Ineffective. C. Convenient. D. Controversial.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To spread knowledge about cornea donation.
B. To show the difficulties of treating blindness.
C. To call on people to protect their eyes properly.
D. To present a new breakthrough in the medical field.
【答案】28. B 29. B 30. A 31. D

“Red tide” is a natural phenomenon that frequently occurs in many places around the world. The phenomenon is the result of extreme growth of tiny algae (海藻) called K. Brevis, which has a red color, giving the water surface a very noticeable red color. K. Brevis will give off chemicals that can attack the nervous systems of animals, which often leads to deadly results.
Florida citizens are no stranger to “red tide”, which occurs along the state’s Gulf Coast annually. However, the most recent outbreak of red tide has so far lasted much longer and spread across nearly 145 miles of the coastline in southwestern Florida.
The long season has caused the death of tons of fish and other animals which were washed up on the beaches all the way from Tampa to Naples. The smell of the dead animals has kept away thousands of locals and tourists that frequent the area’s long beaches. In view of that, in August, Florida declared a state of emergency for the seven places where K. Brevis has been growing quickly, providing $ 3 million to help with research, cleanup, and wildlife rescue.
Recently, the situation of red tide in Florida may be exacerbated due to an outbreak of algae Trichodesmium in the waters offshore of Manatee County. Trichodesmium floats on the water’s surface sucking nitrogen (氮) from the air while K. Brevis lives below the surface obtaining nitrogen from the water. If these two masses of algae mix, the dying Trichodesmium may end up providing nitrogen for K. Brevis, lengthening its stay in the area.
Researchers recently are exploring the idea of introducing other algal species to Florida. Among the possibilities is the Diatom. It’s a kind of algae that can grow quickly in the water. Its growth will consume a large amount of nitrogen from the water. So it competes with K. Brevis for nitrogen. Another possibility is algae known to give off chemicals that stop the growth of red tide.
The 10-month-long red tide outbreak in Florida may be the result of a combination of heavy rainfall, warmer ocean temperatures, and pollution. Now it’s time for us to do something.
32. What can we learn about K. Brevis?
A. It’s caused by red tide. B. It can harm ocean life.
C. It’s facing dying out. D. It exists mainly on land.
33. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The researchers’ study of algae. B. The tourism potential in Florida.
C. The possible ways to deal with red tide. D. The consequences of red tide in Florida.
34. What does the underlined part mean?
A. Worsened. B. Studied. C. Handled. D. Ignored.
35. What’s the possible function of the algae Diatom?
A. To change the color of K. Brevis.
B. To help reduce K. Brevis’ food supply.
C. To damage K. Brevis using some chemicals.
D. To increase fishes’ resistance to K. Brevis’ attack.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. B

根据文章第四段“due to an outbreak of algae Trichodesmium in the waters offshore of Manatee County. A. Worsened变得更糟,恶化;B. Studied研究;C. Handled处理;D. Ignored忽视。故选A项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。文章倒数第二段“Among the possibilities is the Diatom. It’s a kind of algae that can grow quickly in the water. Its growth will consume a large amount of nitrogen from the water. So it competes with K. Brevis for nitrogen.

We had moved to a new town for my husband’s work. After living here for just a couple of weeks, I was more than ready to pick up my luggage and move back home. I was lonely for a friend. My boy Samuel was lonely. My husband, Lonny, adapted just fine, but he was occupied with work most of the time.
I missed our old neighborhood. It had been like a closely knitted community where neighbors chatted over fences. Newcomers were welcomed with chocolate brownies (巧克力蛋糕) and carrot bread. It had been easy to find friends there.
Our new community was different. It seemed that family roots grew deep. Deep as the Mississippi River that flowed past this tiny river town. Breaking in was tough.
“I’m so alone here,” I said to Lonny one evening. Lonny is a good listener, and a problem solver. “What have you done to meet people?” he asked. “I go to the park every day. I even dropped by a book salon (读书沙龙) at the library the other day and came across a nice lady with a boy.”
“Sounds not bad,” he said. “Did you talk to her?” The answer was no. It wasn’t that people here were unkind. I just didn’t feel like initiating conversations, and I preferred minding my own business in a new environment.
A few more months passed and winter settled in. It was harder than ever to meet people. I began to feel bitter. I was tired of trying to fit in a place where we didn’t belong.
Lonny noticed my low spirits. “Amy, you look unapproachable, with your arms crossed and everything,” he whispered in my ear one afternoon. He and I were sitting in the yard. Samuel, our five-year-old was playing baseball next to us.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m not going to have friends here.” Just then Samuel looked up. He must’ve heard our whispers. “Mom’s right, Dad. We’ll never ever have friends here. And we just want to go back to our old home.” I sat there and looked at my tiny innocent son. His words mirrored my attitude. And I didn’t like the disturbing reflection.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

One afternoon, Samuel and I ran into the lady with her boy again at the library.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
That’s when I knew that I needed an adjustment. I didn’t want my boy to grow into a bitter kid. Over the next few weeks I worked very hard to fit in. I greeted everyone with a friendly nod, arms uncrossed with a genuine smile. I struck up conversations with acquaintances at the park. I even baked chocolate brownies and offered them as a nice gesture to our neighbors. Most importantly, I stopped talking about moving back home and drew my son’s attention to the upsides of our new community. To my delight, Samuel also started to feel a bit more at home and included.
One afternoon, Samuel and I ran into the lady with her boy again at the library. I gathered my courage and walked closer. “Hi, I’m Amy. This is Samuel. Can we join you guys?” I made sure that I looked approachable. The woman readily pulled up two chairs for us. It turned out we had a whole lot in common. Following that encounter, we visited each other’s home a million times. Before long, my family gradually found our way to be part of this river town. One day Lonny and I were sitting in our yard again, preparing for a barbecue party. “Darling, you still wanna go back home?” Before I uttered a single word, Samuel cut in, “No, Dad. This is our home now.”
【解析】

“My children enjoy reading the book and they recommend me to read it as well” another viewer commented.
Barbara Rieco’s book, now accepted by a new generation of readers, continues to spread joy and inspiration.

Brevis?
A It’s caused by red tide.

How to improve your memory?
It’s generally accepted that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but when it comes to the brain, scientists have discovered this old saying simply isn’t true. ____36____ Whether you’re looking to sharpen your mind, boost your mental performance, or preserve your memory as you age, these tips can help.
____37____ Memory, like muscular strength, requires you to “use it or lose it”. The more you work out your brain, the better you’ll be able to process and remember information. The best brain exercises break your routine and challenge you to use and develop new brain pathways.
Don’t skip the physical exercise. While mental exercise is important for brain health, that doesn’t mean you never need to break a sweat. Physical exercise helps your brain stay sharp. ____38____
Get enough sleep. There is a big difference between the amount of sleep you can get and the amount you need to function at your best. The truth is that over 95% of adults need 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep every night. ____39____ Memory, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills are all harmed.
Make time for friends. When you think of ways to improve memory, do you think of “serious” activities such as mastering chess strategies, or is it more relaxing pastimes—hanging out with friends or enjoying a funny movie? ____40____ But countless studies show that a life full of friends and fun comes with brain benefits.
A. Keep stress in check.
B. Give your brain a workout.
C. If you’re like most of us, it’s probably the former.
D. Even losing a few hours of sleep makes a difference!
E. In fact, interacting with others may provide the best kind of brain exercise.
F. The human brain has an astonishing ability to adapt and change, even into old age.
G. It increases oxygen to your brain and reduces the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss.
