Sometimes shipwrecks(沉船)contain sunken treasure, loads of gold or jewelry. Other shipwrecks are themselves the treasure—the stories of their ill-fated voyages creating a legend that makes them sparkle far more than any gold or precious stones.
The wreck of HMS Endurance, which has finally been located deep beneath the icy seas of Antarctica after being lost 107 years ago, was arguably the most valuable shipwreck ever sought. That’s because its discovery adds another thrilling new chapter to an already fascinating tale of perseverance and survival that has echoed down the decades and still inspires today.
Incredibly well preserved at a depth of almost two miles, the ship is little changed from the day in November 1914 when it finally sank beneath the ice. Endurance became embedded in ice while crossing Antarctica’s Weddell Sea. The video shot by underwater search vehicles shows painted timbers, an undamaged guardrail(护栏)and the name “Endurance” written above the five-pointed symbol of a polar star.
“I tell you, you would have to be made of stone not to feel a bit soft at the sight of that star and the name above,” Mensun Bound, the mission’s marine archaeologist, told the BBC. “You can see a porthole(舷窗)that is in Shackleton’s cabin. At that moment, you really do feel the breath of the great man upon the back of your neck.” Shackleton’s leadership was crucial to getting his men out alive. The reason why Shackleton is still applauded as a great man becomes obvious when you consider what he achieved in the face of disasters and hardships during his 1914-16 expedition. The practicality and humanity he showed in the face of severe situations was arguably praised.
1. What makes Endurance the most valuable shipwreck?
A. The treasure aboard. B. Its inspiring stories.
C. Its undamaged guardrail. D. The symbol of a polar star.
2. What can we infer from Mensun Bound’s words?
A. The floating ice is as hard as stones.
B. The well-preserved shipwreck is amazing.
C. The heroic deeds of Shackleton are touching.
D. The discovery of Endurance is challenging.
3. What is the text type of the passage?
A. A book review. B. A news report.
C. A biography. D. A travel journal.
B
In this age of cell phones, text messages and computer keyboards, one Scottish school has returned to basics. It’s teaching children the ignored art of writing with a fountain pen. There is no clicking of keyboards in most classrooms at the Mary Erskine and Stewart’s Melville Junior School, although there is a full range of facilities (设施) for computer lessons and technology isn’t being ignored. The school’s headmaster believes the old-fashioned pens have helped strengthen the academic performance and self-respect of his 1,200 pupils.
“The pens improve the quality of work because they force the children to take care, and better work improves self-respect”, headmaster Bryan Lewis said. “Proper handwriting is as relevant today as it ever has been.” Students as young as 7 have been instructed to give up their ballpoint pens and begin to deal with the more artful predecessor. By the time they reach grade five, at age 9, they are expected to write mainly with fountain pens. Lewis said the school’s 7- and 8-year-olds use fountain pens for 80 percent to 90 percent of their work, returning to pencils for such subjects as math. “I don’t see fountain pens as old-fashioned or out of date. Modern fountain pens are beautiful to use. It’s not like in the old days of broken metal points and dirtying writing paper,” Lewis said. “We have a particular writing style and we have developed it very carefully and found a way that allows left- and right-handed people to write without dirtying paper.”
Some people argue that handwriting is becoming less important because of the growing use of cell phone text messaging and typing on computers, but the school disagrees. “We talk of the paperless office and the paperless world, but this is not true,” Lewis said. “You still need to have proper handwriting skills.”
4. What can be inferred about the Scottish school?
A. It does not think highly of modern technology.
B. It values fountain pens more than anything else.
C. It pays special attention to the use of fountain pens.
D. It takes action which is considered stupid by many people.
5. What does the underlined word “predecessor” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The pencil. B. The keyboard. C. The ballpoint pen. D. The fountain pen.
6. Which of the following may be the view of the headmaster?
A. Fountain pens have helped to build up students’ self-respect.
B. Using fountain pens may slow down students’ speed of writing.
C. Handwriting skills are more important than typing skills nowadays.
D. Children should be required to use fountain pens when they are five.
7. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. Schools should stay away from tech.
B. Old-fashioned fountain pens are coming back.
C. Fountain pens strengthen academic performance.
D. Handwriting should not be ignored in modern times.
C
Cartoons suit the way we like information to be presented these days: vividly and in small amounts. We are used to cartoons and comic series that take a biting look at modern life or provide a bit of escapism. But recently we have seen an increase in the number of comic books: book-length comics with a single, continuous narrative. Historically, comic books were not popular outside France, Belgium, Japan, and the US. The exception is the worldwide popularity of a young reporter-detective from Belgium, Tintin.
The creation of the Belgian cartoonist Herge, The Adventures of Tintin first appeared in a Belgian newspaper in 1929. Each story appeared as a cartoon series week by week, but soon after was republished in book form. One of the main attractions for readers was that they were taken to parts of the world they had never seen and probably never would: Russia, Congo, America. Herge himself only traveled outside Belgium later in life, but his passion was educating his readers about other cultures and places.
Two things set Herge apart as a comic novelist. The first was his technical drawing skills: with just a few simple lines he could communicate a particular facial expression or movement. The second was the careful research he put into his stories. In The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin follows an opium-smuggling (鸦片走私) ring to North Africa; in King Ottakar’s Scepter, he makes an attempt at a military coup (政变) in a central European country. While telling these stories, Herge also made a fine balance between serious topics and humor.
Tintin had more than his fair share of adventures, but perhaps the greatest is his journey to the Moon, told in Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon. Written in 1953, sixteen years before the first Moon landing, the stories show a remarkable eye for technical detail and feeling for the nature of space travel. In the early 1950s, few could imagine what it was like to be looking down at our planet from outer space. And that is Herge’s true gift: to understand what a place was like without ever having been there.
8. What can be learned about comic books from the passage?
A. They mostly involve detective stories.
B. They present information in small amounts.
C. They are taking a positive look at modern life.
D. They were popular outside Belgium historically.
9. Which of the following was an attraction of The Adventures of Tintin for readers?
A. The stories were the first comic novel published in book form.
B. The stories used to be cartoon series that appeared week by week.
C. The stories had a good balance between serious topics and humor.
D. The stories enabled them to learn about places they had never been to.
10. Why are The Crab with the Golden Claws and King Ottakar’s Scepter taken for examples?
A. To show Herge had a good sense of humor.
B. To show Herge liked touching on serious topics.
C. To illustrate Herge based stories on research results.
D. To illustrate Herge was expert at technical drawing skills.
11. Which of the following can best describe Herge according to the passage?
A. Creative. B. Devoted.
C. Serious. D. Humorous.
D
Solar panels — also known as “photovoltaic” panels — are used to turn sunlight into electricity. Most solar panels are placed on land in large collections called solar farms. But recently people have begun to explore putting floating solar panels on water. Because these panels float, some people call them “floatovoltaics”.
The idea isn’t as unusual as it might seem. After all, any solar panel has to be waterproof, since it will be out in the rain. There are already several large floatovoltaic farms in Asia. On land, so panels are held up by special frames (框架). On the water, floatovoltaics are placed on a floating platform attached to the bottom of a lake or reservoir (水库). Floating solar panels cost about 25% more than those placed on land.
The researchers behind the new study looked at 145,555 reservoirs worldwide. They used computer programs to figure out how much electricity could be produced yearly by covering 30% of these reservoirs with floating solar panels. The answer was surprisingly large — more than twice the amount of energy the United States generates in a year and 10 times as much energy as all the solar power currently being generated in the world.
Floatovoltaics can also help save water by limiting evaporation (蒸发) from reservoirs. The scientists say that solar panels covering just 30% of the reservoirs’ surfaces could save as much water as 300 million people would use in a year. There are several other reasons that make floatovoltaics a good idea. Photovoltaic panels work better when they’re not extremely hot. The water helps cool the panels so that they create more energy.
Floatovoltaics aren’t perfect. Covering too much of a reservoir with panels could affect the plants and animals in the water. The scientists say it will be important to study how floating panels will affect water in each reservoir. Focusing first on man-made reservoirs will avoid some of those problems.
12. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To list solar panels’ unusual functions.
B. To introduce the workability of floating solar panels.
C. To show disadvantages of solar panels on land.
D. To make a comparison between different solar panels.
13. How did researchers carry out the new study?
A. By looking at reservoirs worldwide. B. By building floatovoltaic farms in the US.
C. By making computer-aided estimates. D. By processing data given by specialists.
14. What do we know about floating solar panels?
A. They may cause potential harm to water ecosystem.
B. They will eventually replace photovoltaic panels.
C. They function well in extreme hot weather.
D. They are perfect except for the high cost.
15. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. Floating Solar Panels — Our Final Choice
B Floating Solar Panels — Taking Us Back to Water
C. Floating Solar Panels — A New Way to Cool the Planet
D. Floating Solar Panels — Making Energy, Saving Water

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into different groups in the class. There were the geeks, the jocks (小丑) , and the popular cool kids. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. And I think that was a problem.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friend without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days.
Everyone was excited to get involved, including Rochelle. By the middle of the week, we had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationary sets on our friend’s desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends. Everyone except me, that is.
My secret friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley face pictures saying that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. This friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts kept me wondering what was up with whoever had pulled my name.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package on my desk. At last, my secret friend had grasped the idea that a gift was what I really needed. I quickly ripped open the gift paper, only to find a small doll inside. The pink wool-knit doll seemed not new but delicate. But the girls sitting near me giggled and gossiped about the “little girl” gift I had received.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing this, I felt my face turn red.

D. The stories enabled them to learn about places they had never been to.
10. Why are The Crab with the Golden Claws and King Ottakar’s Scepter taken for examples?
A. To show Herge had a good sense of humor.
B. To show Herge liked touching on serious topics.

【答案】One possible version:
Dear Editor,
As I attended the summer camp about health and lifestyle choices, I started to analyze them seriously, especially playing games, the unhealthy way I relaxed myself, and its effects on my life.
Half a year ago, I felt stressed out and always relaxed with computer games day and night. Playing was fun, but I felt even more worn out afterwards! After the camp, I realized that it was time to adjust my lifestyle by finding other ways to relax. Rock climbing and playing basketball were the things I thought of doing instead. Though it was a big struggle, I made it with great determination.
After six months of trying out, I feel more energetic now. I believe that I can change myself for the better.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One Possible Version:
Hearing this, I felt my face turn red. Embarrassed and ashamed, I secretly complained that the girl gave me so stupid a gift to arouse others’ derision. I even joined other girls in gossiping about my secret friend and the poor doll. When I continued with mean remarks, a girl sitting at the last row arose and came up, casting me an angry and disappointed look. With tears streaming down her face, she admitted, “I’m your secret friend and I’m sorry about the gift.” Then she ran out of the classroom. Frozen with shock, I couldn’t utter a single word.
It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family. She had saved every penny in her pocket money in order to give me a cool gift. With the limited money, she visited a lot of stores and finally selected the lovely doll from a second-hand store. Actually, she gave me a most valuable gift with her sincere heart. However, I didn’t treasure and hurt her badly in such a cruel way. So ashamed was I that it took me a few days to pluck up my courage to face up to Rochelle and apologize. Much to my delight, she forgave me and later we became best friends. Most importantly, we found where we belonged.
