Here are my top choices for the world’s best eco-hotels for holidays. A visit to any of these hotels promises a memorable and fulfilling vacation.
Bambu Indah (Bali)
This small hotel is the exact picture of what it calls “old-school Bali”—a restful and laid-back experience in harmony with nature. Spend your days at Bambu Indah in natural river swimming pools fed by waterfalls, open-air bamboo structures on stilts (高跷) above the rice fields.
Why Book:
● There are only oil lamps in the hotel in an effort to reduce light pollution.
● Mosquito nets around beds catch cool air as part of a cooling solution that avoids traditional air conditioning and lessens the carbon footprint.
● Banana leaves are used as plates and papaya stems as straws as part of the hotel’s no-plastic policy.
The Stanford Inn By The Sea (California)
The Stanford Inn paints a picture of wellness that extends beyond diet and exercise. Private classes and scissions in nutrition and healthy living are provided and a large greenhouse houses a saltwater swimming pool for year-round use.
Why Book:
● The inn hosts students in its Environmental Leadership Field school providing these students with 4- to 6-week explorations into sustainability.
● The property has been practicing organic farming for more than 30 years.
Soneva Kiri (Thailand)
Just 90 minutes from Bangkok, within a rainforest, guests can enjoy the unspoiled beauty and beaches of Soneye Kiri. Night diving and dining in a mushroom cave are just a couple of the unforgettable activities on offer.
Why Book:
● A 2% environmental tax on all stays goes toward the Soneva Foundation, which invests in various projects.
● Soneva funds the organization Care for Children, which has opened a foster care (寄养) training and resource center in Thailand.
● Partnerships with NGOs and other organizations help protect local marine life.

Seven years ago, my father was in the hospital, and I was informed that he was in the end-of-life stage. He had wanted to be at home during his final moments, so I arranged for him to return home. He spent only one more night there, but he wasn’t alone. A Marie Curie nurse was by our side.
Facing the emotions that come with knowing a loved one is at the end of their life can be irresistible. Having a nurse with us made it easier to cope with these feelings. That’s why I made the decision to join Marie Curie.
Working for the charity, I find myself on duty during most Christmases, a typical time for healthcare assistants like us. Our role is to support families and the individuals who are dying. We do whatever they need us to do. For instance, one family asked us to play Christmas carols throughout the night. We accommodate such requests. What we do during Christmas is what we do throughout the year — we aim to please families.
You might assume that being with families during their last Christmas would be a sad experience. But for the families in my experience, it’s not. I remember one particular family—three sisters — and the fourth was in the end-of-life stage. When I arrived, she was unconscious, and I knew she might not make it through the night. But sitting with the sisters, talking about their childhood, past Christmases and sharing photos, it was a special time. They mentioned that their sister had asked for peaches and cream earlier that day, and they made sure she got it. She went to sleep, and we lost her that night. The sisters expected it, they thanked me, and it was a comforting experience. I’ll always remember the peaches and cream!
I’ve lost count of the number of stories like this. I feel honored to be there with them. We can’t change the unavoidable, but we can make a difference.
4. What inspired the author to work for Marie Curie?
A. Her dream to be a nurse. B. Her love for charity work.
C. Her experience of her father’s death. D. Her professional medical background.
5. What does the underlined word “accommodate” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Satisfy. B. Ignore. C. Express. D. Submit.
6. What can be inferred about the three sisters?
A. They tried every means to save their sister.
B. They were desperate about their sister’s death.
C. They didn’t expect that their sister died so soon.
D. They stayed positive during their sister’s final moment.
7. Which word best describes the author as a nurse?
A. Ambitious. B. Brave. C. Confident. D. Devoted.
C 5. A 6. D 7. D

根据第一段“Seven years ago, my father was in the hospital, and I was informed that he was in the end-of-life stage. He had wanted to be at home during his final moments, so I arranged for him to return home. He spent only one more night there, but he wasn’t alone. A Marie Curie nurse was by our side.(七年前,我父亲在医院,我被告知他正处于生命的尽头。他想在生命的最后时刻待在家里,所以我安排他回家。他只在那里多待了一个晚上,但他并不孤单。一位玛丽·居里的护士在我们身边)”以及第二段“Facing the emotions that come with knowing a loved one is at the end of their life can be irresistible. Having a nurse with us made it easier to cope with these feelings. 【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“We do whatever they need us to do. For instance, one family asked us to play Christmas carols throughout the night. We accommodate such requests. What we do during Christmas is what we do throughout the year—we aim to please families.(我们做他们需要我们做的任何事情。例如,一个家庭要求我们整晚播放圣诞颂歌。我们accommodate这些要求。我们在圣诞节期间所做的就是我们全年所做的——我们的目标是使家庭感觉快乐)”可知,作者要做的就是使家庭感觉快乐,推测作者会满足家庭提出的要求,划线单词表示“满足”,与satisfy同义。故选A。
根据第四段“You might assume that being with families during their last Christmas would be a sad experience. But for the families in my experience, it’s not. I remember one particular family—three sisters—and the fourth was in the end-of-life stage. I’ll always remember the peaches and cream!(你可能会认为,与家人在一起度过最后一个圣诞节会是一种悲伤的经历。
根据第三段“Working for the charity, I find myself on duty during most Christmases, a typical time for healthcare assistants like us. Our role is to support families and the individuals who are dying. We do whatever they need us to do.(在慈善机构工作时,我发现自己在大多数圣诞节期间都在值班,这是像我们这样的医疗助理的典型时间。我们的职责是支持家人和垂死的个人。我们做他们需要我们做的任何事情)”可知,作者作为一名护士具有奉献精神。故选D。

Scientists in Brazil have developed a vaccine (疫苗) that prevents addicts from feeling pleasure from the illegal drug, cocaine (可卡因), making the addiction stop right away.
The vaccine, Calixcoca, works by stimulating the user’s immune system to produce antibodies (抗体) when cocaine is detected in the body. These antibodies attach themselves to cocaine in the blood, making it physically too large to pass into the brain’s reward system, where it can make the user feel pleasure.
Different from the failed U. S. vaccine, Calixcoca uses artificial components produced in a lab rather than natural ones, which makes it cheaper to produce and easier to store since the vaccine does not need to be stored at low temperatures.
Calixcoca has so far proven effective in testing on animals, producing significant levels of antibodies against cocaine and few side effects. It also protected unborn baby rats against cocaine, researchers found, suggesting it could be used in humans to protect the unborn babies from being damaged by their mother’s addiction. It is hoped that the introduction of such vaccines will be a significant tool in preventing deaths from cocaine use.
The vaccine is now set to enter the final stage of trials: testing on humans. The first tests on humans have had a 72% success rate in clinical settings. Given that the current treatment for cocaine addiction is only effective in 20% of patients, “anything that is more than 20% effective is already a lot,” said Garcia, a mental health doctor. He also emphasized that, while the vaccine shows promising results, it won’t be a cure-all for everyone. It targets people struggling with addiction, especially “those who are just off cocaine and want to stay that way”. Ideally, it would be used for patients during important phases of their recovery, like when they leave the drug addiction treatment centre.
8. How can the vaccine Calixcoca stop cocaine addiction?
A. By locating cocaine in the body.
B. By strengthening the immune system.
C. By increasing the antibodies in the blood.
D. By stopping cocaine going into the brain.
9. How is the Calixcoca vaccine different from the U.S. vaccine?
A. It can be found in nature. B. It costs less to make.
C. It should be kept in the cold. D. It has a lower success rate.
10. What does Paragraph 4 tell us about the vaccine?
A. Its side effects. B. Its possible benefits.
C. Its target users. D. Its testing process.
11. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. A Universal Cure for Cocaine Addicts
B A Breakthrough in Vaccine Production
C. A Promising Vaccine for Cocaine Addiction
D. A Treatment of Cocaine Addiction in Brazil
D 9. B 10. B 11. C

根据文章第二段“The vaccine, Calixcoca, works by stimulating the user’s immune system to produce antibodies (抗体) when cocaine is detected in the body. These antibodies attach themselves to cocaine in the blood, making it physically too large to pass into the brain’s reward system, where it can make the user feel pleasure.(这种名为 Calixcoca的疫苗的工作原理是,当体内检测到可卡因时,刺激用户的免疫系统产生抗体。这些抗体附着在血液中的可卡因上,使其体积过大,无法进入大脑的奖励系统,从而使使用者感到愉悦。)”可知,疫苗Calixcoca产生的抗体可附着在血液中的可卡因上,增大可卡因体积,使其无法进入大脑给使用者带来愉悦,进而阻止可卡因成瘾。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Different from the failed U. S. vaccine, Calixcoca uses artificial components produced in a lab rather than natural ones, which makes it cheaper to produce and easier to store since the vaccine does not need to be stored at low temperatures.(与失败的美国疫苗不同的是,Calixcoca使用实验室生产的人工成分而不是天然成分,这使得生产成本更低,更容易储存,因为疫苗不需要在低温下储存。)”
根据文章第四段“Calixcoca has so far proven effective in testing on animals, producing significant levels of antibodies against cocaine and few side effects. It also protected unborn baby rats against cocaine, researchers found, suggesting it could be used in humans to protect the unborn babies from being damaged by their mother’s addiction. It is hoped that the introduction of such vaccines will be a significant tool in preventing deaths from cocaine use.(到目前为止, Calixcoca在动物试验中被证明是有效的,产生了大量的抗可卡因抗体,并且几乎没有副作用。研究人员发现,它还可以保护未出生的幼鼠免受可卡因的伤害,这表明它可以用于人类,以保护未出生的婴儿免受母亲成瘾的伤害。希望这种疫苗的引入将成为预防因使用可卡因而死亡的一个重要工具。)”可知,第四段告诉我们疫苗可能的好处,可用于保护未出生的婴儿免受母亲成瘾的伤害等,故选B项。
【11题详解】

In the age of the selfie, taking photos of yourself has become a daily activity. Half of all teenagers regularly post selfies. But what happens when the desire for the best selfie starts damaging nature—or even ourselves?
Social media tourism is dramatically changing who visits natural places like Figure Eight Pools in Sydney’s Royal National Park. Many people are now drawn to these places for the best selfie background. These new tourists, motivated to seek out photos and selfies, sometimes ignore warning signs or bans on drones (无人机). Thus, many people have been severely injured or killed by taking risky selfies and photos in dangerous locations. Additionally, drone use can cause environmental harm if drones catch fire or batteries leak.
The search for the perfect selfie can also harm animals, protected plants and even First Nations rock art. In some cases, selfies have become a long-term threat to ecosystems.
But for land managers, perhaps the biggest challenge is satisfying increased interest while keeping people safe. They are working to assist this new demand by reshaping nature to make better scenery—and keep visitors safer. At Moran Falls in Queensland’s Lamington National Park, a famous view had been blocked by plants, driving some visitors to jump the fence at the viewing platform and stand directly on top of a very tall cliff (悬崖). As a solution, land managers have the trees trimmed (修剪) and then use the fallen branches to hide the track made by selfie-seekers.
These land managers are wondering why traditional measures like signs and warnings often prove ineffective? The answer may lie in social recognition For many, the risk seems worth the reward if it means gaining admiration on social media. Nature-based content on popular social media platforms like TikTok often performs very well, giving other would-be influencers the motive to seek out new locations. This problem has been created by the combination of social media and human psychology. To solve it, we might look at how these two factors interact. Responsible selfie and tourism campaigns on popular social media platforms could be a start.
12. Why are many people attracted to visit places like Figure Eight Pools?
A. To appreciate the natural beauty. B. To seek adventure and excitement.
C. To search for the ideal selfie setting. D. To test the use of drones for photography.
13. How is Paragraph 4 developed?
A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By making comparisons.
14. What leads to the failure of traditional measures?
A. Risks are often ignored by people B. Rules are rarely followed by people.
C. Exploring new attractions is preferred. D. Social media attention is valued more.
15. What solution is suggested in the last paragraph?
A. Launching tourism campaigns B. Promoting proper behaviors online
C. Banning selfies in natural landscape. D. Restricting access to social media platforms.
C 13. B 14. D 15. B

Many people are now drawn to these places for the best selfie background.(社交媒体旅游正在极大地改变着人们参观悉尼皇家国家公园“八字形泳池”等自然景点的方式。
根据第四段“But for land managers, perhaps the biggest challenge is satisfying increased interest while keeping people safe. As a solution, land managers have the trees trimmed (修剪) and then use the fallen branches to hide the track made by selfie-seekers.(但对于土地管理者来说,最大的挑战可能是在保证人们安全的同时满足人们日益增长的兴趣。他们正在努力通过重塑自然,创造更好的风景来满足这一新的需求,同时保证游客的安全。在昆士兰州拉明顿国家公园的莫兰瀑布,一个著名的景观被植物挡住了,迫使一些游客跳过观景台的栅栏,直接站在一个非常高的悬崖上。为了解决这个问题,土地管理者让人修剪树木,然后用掉落的树枝掩盖自拍者留下的痕迹。)”可知,第四段通过举例展开。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The answer may lie in social recognition For many, the risk seems worth the reward if it means gaining admiration on social media.(对许多人来说,如果能在社交媒体上赢得赞赏,那么冒险似乎是值得的。)”
根据最后一段“This problem has been created by the combination of social media and human psychology. To solve it, we might look at how these two factors interact. Responsible selfie and tourism campaigns on popular social media platforms could be a start.(这个问题是由社交媒体和人类心理的结合造成的。为了解决这个问题,我们可以看看这两个因素是如何相互作用的。在流行的社交媒体平台上开展负责任的自拍和旅游活动可能是一个开始。)”可知,最后一段提出的解决方案是提倡正确的网络行为。故选B。

An essential writing skill is the ability to use plain language effectively to convey ideas clearly. Plain language involves using direct and accessible language with a straightforward structure. To write in plain language, it is important to follow certain guidelines.
____16____ The only details necessary are those necessary for understanding. For example, the sign “Wait behind the yellow line,” at a train platform includes “yellow” so travelers know where to stand.
Plain language avoids using vocabulary that requires specialized knowledge. If you work in IT, you can comfortably use the word “latency” with your colleagues. ____17____ But when speaking with someone without an IT background, you might instead use “slow” to ensure that they know what you’re talking about.
Plain language is more than word choices, though. It also involves structuring writing to prioritize clarity. ____18____ For example, use clear headers for each section. Mention the topic early in a sentence or paragraph. Write directly to your reader. ____19____ Additionally, use the active voice whenever possible to enhance clarity.
It is important to note that not every guideline for plain writing will apply to every piece of writing. The ultimate goal is to create contents that are accessible and easily understood. By using plain language, you demonstrate respect for your readers’ time and intelligence. ____20____
A. That is because they know what it means.
B. This can be achieved in the following ways.
C. Thus, it develops positive relationships with them.
D. In many cases, this means writing in the second person point of view.
E. One key aspect of plain writing is ensuring sentences are as short as possible.
F. This can be especially important for those who speak English as a second language.
G. Plain language reduces the risk of misunderstandings caused by confusing language choices.

根据上文“Plain language is more than word choices, though. It also involves structuring writing to prioritize clarity.(然而,简单的语言不仅仅是词语的选择。它还包括组织写作,优先考虑清晰。)”提到简单的语言不仅仅是词语的选择,还包括其它东西,以及下文“For example, use clear headers for each section. Mention the topic early in a sentence or paragraph. Write directly to your read.(例如,每个部分使用清晰的标题。在句子或段落的开头尽早提及主题。直接写给读者。)”可知,上文强调组织写作,优先考虑清晰,下文给出了具体的做法。结合选项B项This can be achieved in the following ways.(这可以通过以下方式实现。)可知,This指代的是“It also involves structuring writing to prioritize clarity.”,“in the following ways”呼应的是下“文For example, use clear headers for each section. Mention the topic early in a sentence or paragraph. Write directly to your read.”,起到上下文的承上启下作用,符合语境。故选B项。
【19题详解】
根据上文 “Write directly to your reader. (直接写给读者。)”,再结合D项“In many cases, this means writing in the second person point of view.(在很多情况下,这意味着要运用第二人称来写作)”可知,this指代的是“直接写给读者”这一方法,运用第二人称来写作呼应“直接写给读者”这一语意,故选D项。
根据上文“By using plain language, you demonstrate respect for your readers’ time and intelligence.(通过使用通俗易懂的语言,你表现出对读者时间和智慧的尊重。)” 结合选项C项“Thus, it develops positive relationships with them.(因此,它与他们发展了积极的关系。)”

Sophie had to move to a new school in the town from her own village with her family because her father got a new job in a company. At the beginning, she used to sit alone in the class and then one day a girl, Nia, from her class talked to her, hoping that they could be friends. Nia was a modern girl born and brought up in the town. She was kind and a loving girl.
Nia never really had many friends because she used to choose her friends very wisely. When Nia came to Sophie with the hand of friendship, Sophie did not think even for a second and accepted her friendship as she needed friends. As the days passed by, Nia and Sophie had already developed a good friendship. They then promised that they would focus on the better things they would do for each other if they made mistakes.
Soon Sophie made many friends like Stephen, George, Josh and Ernie. She spent a lot of time with most of them as close friends and almost forgot about Nia. One day Sophie along with all her friends decided to do something adventurous: to light up firecrackers (鞭炮) behind the office building.
As word spread very fast among teenagers, Nia heard about it and told her to be aware of her real friends but Sophie paid no attention to it. Nia then knew that Sophie would not be so careful so she decided to look out for Sophie without her knowledge.
When they were pushing Sophie out to light up the crackers with a candle, Stephen saw a teacher coming out of the office room. He waved to the others to run away but left Sophie alone there.

The teacher noticed Sophie and shouted, “Stop!” He slowly approached Sophie and said softly, “I know that children of your age think they have grown up and can do many things, and are willing to bravely do something adventurous. However, no matter what kind of adventure you take, the first thing to consider is safety, including the safety of you, your friends and the public. Another question is, after experiencing this, do you know who your true friend is?”
In the headmaster’s room Nia pulled out her phone. At this moment, Sophie’s phone rang. It was Nia calling. Nia said sincerely, “If you knew it was me who told the teacher, you would definitely hate me and treat me as your enemy. However, I have never forgotten our promise that we would focus on the better things we would do for each other if we made mistakes.” Sophie lowered her head in shame upon hearing this. She realized her problem and found her true friendship.

A. Ambitious. B. Brave. C. Confident. D. Devoted.
C
B. A Breakthrough in Vaccine Production
C. A Promising Vaccine for Cocaine Addiction
D. A Treatment of Cocaine Addiction in Brazil
D
In the age of the selfie taking photos of yourself has become a daily activity.
14 What leads to the failure of traditional measures?
