Passage 1
International travel is popular, but visitors can run into trouble if they don’t know some basic “rules”. So, it’s important to learn about the cultures they’re visiting.
BRAZIL
In general. Brazilian culture is informal (随意的). Most Brazilians are very friendly, so it’s important to greet the people you meet. Women usually kiss on the cheek, but men usually just shake hands. Brazilians usually stand very close to each other while speaking. Even if this is unusual in your culture, try not to move away if it happens. If you go to a business meeting, you are not expected to take a gift.
On the other hand, if you are invited to someone’s house, you should take a gift—like flowers or chocolate. However, don’t take anything purple or black, as these colors have to do with death. If you are invited to dinner, arrive at least 30 minutes late, but always dress well, because a person’s appearance can be very important to Brazilians.
SAUDI ARABIA
Saudi Arabia is a very traditional country. It is important to greet the oldest or the most senior person first. People shake hands in business situations, but men and women do not touch in public. In a business meeting, do not start with business matters at once. Instead, start the conversation by asking about people’s family or health. Arrive on time for business meetings, but don’t be surprised if others are late. Being on time is less important in Saudi Arabia than it is in most western countries. Business dress is formal. Gifts are not expected at business meetings. If you are invited to a Saudi home, acceptable gifts are chocolate or coffee. Would you like to adopt an animal? Although this sounds very unusual, some children have done just this. The Natural Zoo has given people the chance to adopt animals by paying for all of its food for one year. One of the animals that needed parents was a young tiger named Brocky. The people at the zoo said that it would cost about $900 a year for the food for Brocky.
Not many boys and girls have $900 to spend. That is why several hundred children and grown-ups each have sent a little money to the zoo to help pay for Brocky’s food. Some children sent in only a quarter because that was all the money they had. Other children sent in more money than that.
Since so many people sent money to the zoo to help pay for Brocky’s food, he now will be able to eat as much as he wants. Passage 7
Fiona McIntyre is a taxi driver in London. She tells us about her work and some of her experiences.
Q: When did you start?
I’ve been a taxi driver for about five years. Before that I was a bus driver in London, and I enjoyed it, but I wanted more freedom so I changed and started driving my taxi.
Q: Have you ever had any famous passengers?
Oh yes. I’ve had film stars, politicians, you know, lots of famous people. About a year ago, a really famous actor got in my taxi. I took him to the airport. We were stuck on the way and it took a long time to get there, so he missed his plane and failed to meet his fans. It wasn’t my fault but when he got out of the taxi, he shouted at me angrily! I said to him, “Next time, take a bus!”
Q: Have passengers ever left anything in your taxi?
Oh yes! People have left all kinds of things — a suitcase, a hat, mobile phones, of course, even a dog once! Years ago, a woman left a pair of shoes on the seat. And one time a passenger left his teeth here! Not real teeth, of course — false teeth.
And people have asked me to do some strange jobs. Once a doctor stopped me outside a hospital and asked me to take a skeleton to another hospital. Professors usually use skeletons to teach medical students, you know. And I did. But I asked him to pay first — the skeleton couldn’t pay, after all!
Q: 5
Good question. I’ve always enjoyed being a taxi driver and I don’t want to change. But of course, sometimes, it’s not great. I don’t like driving around without a passenger, but it’s better than just waiting at the airport or at a railway station. I think that’s the worst part-waiting.

A.independent B.exciting C.comfortable D.satisfying
37.The famous actor missed his plane because ________.
A.Fiona didn’t drive well B.Fiona wasn’t very polite

A.suitcases B.mobile phones C.false teeth D.umbrellas
39.The underlined ward “him” in Fiona’s answer to the third question refers to ________.
A.the skeleton B.the doctor C.the professor D.the student
40.Which of the following questions best fits Blank 5?
A.What do you think of the future of a taxi driver?
B.What do you think is the worst part of your job?
C.What do you do when there are no passengers?
D.What do you do when you’re waiting for passengers?
41.According to the interview, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.Fiona has worked as a taxi driver since five years ago.
B.Sometimes passengers may leave their pets in Fiona’s taxi.
C.Fiona doesn’t like driving around without a passenger most.
D.Fiona doesn’t think that the famous actor was polite.

From the first day that men began to study numbers in daily life, some numbers have been thought to be lucky, while others are considered unlucky. And it’s not just Western culture that has done this. Cultures in Japan, China, India, and Africa have done the same thing, but for different reasons. Let’s take a look at some commonly known lucky and unlucky numbers to see why they are loved or hated.
Everyone knows that “7” is lucky. But 53 ? The root of most lucky numbers can be found in religion. God, for example, is said to have created the world in 7 days. Until the 1800s, there were seven known planets in the solar system(太阳系). Seven is even the usual number of spots on a ladybug and ladybugs are considered good luck themselves.
“4” means bad luck in Asia. For example, the 54 of “4” in Chinese is very similar to the word “death”. And because of this, “4” has been considered bad luck in China.
“666” is a 55 number. It is extremely bad luck in Western culture but very good luck in many Asian countries. 56 the Christian Bible(圣经), the number 666 means Satan(撒旦,魔鬼). It might be the most avoided number in Western culture. For example, there used to be US Highway 666 in New Mexico, but in 2003 it was changed to US Highway 491 because the government was afraid that the number would scare tourists away. Another example is that Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States, changed the 57 666 St. Cloud Road, Bel Air to 668 St. Cloud Road, Bel Air before moving in. But in Asia, people love “666” because it 58 “things going smoothly”, and is considered to be very lucky.

Have you ever wondered why you sometimes end up with 10 mosquito (蚊子) bites in a single night, while your friend sleeping in the same room doesn’t?
Scientists have 59 that 85 percent of our tendency (倾向性) to mosquito bites is down to our genes. Certain chemicals in our bodies can also attract mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have even developed a 60 sense of smell to pick out their favourite blood.
Jerry Butler, a scientist from the University of Florida, explains, “One in ten people is highly attractive to mosquitoes.” According to Butler’s study, mosquitoes cannot create their own cholesterol (胆固醇) and B vitamins, 61 they look for people who are rich in those things.
Mosquitoes are also attracted to certain acids (酸性物质) produced on the skin during sweating. 62 this, they can smell CO2, in human breath from far away. Larger people often 63 more CO2 , which may be why mosquitoes often prefer adults to small children. Pregnant (怀孕的) women are also 64 bitten, as their breath contains increased levels of CO2 .

Imagine a mass of floating waste is two times the size of the state of Texas. Texas has a land area of more than 678,000 square kilometers. So it might be difficult to imagine anything twice as big.

In recent years, there have been growing concerns (担心) about the floating garbage and its effect on sea creatures and human health. Scientists say thousands of animals get trapped in the floating waste, resulting in death or 74 . Even more die from a lack of food or water after swallowing pieces of plastic. The trash can also make animals feel full, lessening their desire to eat or drink.
The floating garbage also can have 75 effects on people. There is an increased threat of infection (感染) of disease from polluted waste, and from eating fish that swallowed waste. Divers can also get trapped in the plastic.
Its existence first gained public attention in 1997. That was when racing boat captain and oceanographer (海洋学家) Charles Moore and his crew sailed into the garbage while returning from a racing event. Five years earlier, 76 oceanographer learned of the trash after a shipment of rubber duckies got lost at sea. Many of those toys are now part of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch.
In August, 2009, a team from the University of California, San Diego became the latest group to travel to it. They were 77 by the amount of waste they saw. They gathered hundreds of sea creatures and water samples to measure the garbage patch’s effect on ocean environment.

三、任务型阅读
Passage 1
Answer the questions.(根据短文内容回答下列问题)
In July, China introduced the “double reduction(双减)” policy. It hopes to reduce students’ learning burden(负担) by reducing homework and after-school classes. Several months have passed since then. How do students feel about this new policy?
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore.” According to him, teachers now teach at a much slower pace. Students have enough time to process new knowledge.
For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called ‘leadership development’ where I can learn all kinds of skills beyond school study,” said Zhang.
Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. Each exam shows my progress as well as my weak points,” Zhang said.
Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline(自律)becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind your peers(同龄人),” he said.
90.Why does the government introduce the “double reduced” policy?
91.What is the best thing the “double reduced” policy bring to Zhang Hangming?
92.Who thinks fewer exams are good for students, Zhang Hangming or Shen Yuzhe?
93.What does Shen Yuzhe think will happen when a student spends all his free time relaxing?
94.Is the “double reduced” policy a good thing to you? Why or Why not?
Passage 2
Laura Berner grew up in the mountains in Bavaria, Germany. “I remember as a child looking up into the sky and watching eagles fly over the valley where I lived,” she says. “That’s when I first decided that I’d love to leap into the air and feel the wind lift me off my feet.”
Laura had her first paragliding lesson when she was sixteen, and fell in love with the sport. “You run down a mountain slope, the wind catches your wing, and then you’re flying like a bird. It feels great. The views of the mountains from up there are fantastic.”
Laura’s husband Martin had never tried paragliding, but he was crazy about skiing. It seemed like a good idea for Laura and Martin to try each other’s hobbies. He taught her how to ski and she showed him how to paraglide. When each of them had learned how to do the other sport well, they decided to combine (融合) them and try paraskiing. “It’s like paragliding, but you’re wearing skis,” says Martin. “When you land, you have to start skiing immediately, or you will drop down in the snow. You have to be a good skier.”
In the past, Laura mostly did her hobby in the summer and Martin could only do his in the winter. Now they spend every winter weekend gliding over the valleys together, then skiing down the slopes of a snow-covered mountain. And in the summer they both do normal paragliding. “It’s more fun doing our hobbies together,” says Laura. “Now we can both really enjoy the summer and the winter!”
95.Did Laura want to leap into the air like an eagle when she was a child?
96.When did Laura start to be keen on paragliding?
97.Why does Laura like paragliding?
98.How did Laura and Martin combine the two sports?
99.Is it more interesting or less for Laura and Martin to do their hobbies together?
100.Would you like to try paraskiing? Why?
Passage 3
I am Mari. I live in Flint, Michigan. About five years ago, our water began to smell funny. My family started getting really bad skin problems. My little sister needed special medicine. She wasn’t the only kid in Flint who got so sick. Some people suffered from bad headaches. Others had stomachache.
Across the city, people complained that something was seriously wrong with their tap water. Our water was polluted. We couldn’t drink or cook with the water from our tap. We had to use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and brushing our teeth. The only safe way to take baths was to heat up water from bottles.
In 2015, when I was 8 years old, I decided to speak up for the people of Flint. I wrote a letter to then-president Barack Obama to ask him for help. In response, he came to speak with our community. I got to meet him. But I wanted to do more.
My friends and family helped me start a campaign for Flint. Our goal was to raise S15,000. So far, we’ve collected $280,000!
For the past few years, I’ve been giving out bottles of water and new water filters (过滤器) to people in my city. Many people in Flint still can’t use their tap water.
I’ve also used social media to ask people around the world for help. I have more than 100,000 followers on the Internet, including famous people and regular people from different countries.
Most people now know me as Little Miss Flint. I’m proud that I am able to help my neighbors get clean water. I’ll continue until I help every single Flint citizen feel safe drinking the water from their taps. People should realize that Flint isn’t the only place with water issues. It’s important for us all to ask questions about what’s in the water at school and at home.
My goal is to run for U.S. president in 2044 — as soon as I’m old enough. But you don’t have to be an adult to change the world. It starts with helping out in your own community. You have a voice and the ability to make that voice heard. Don’t let anyone stop you.
101.Is Mari the girl who is known as Little Miss Flint?
102.What happened in Flint about five years ago?
People because
103.What did Mari do to speak up for the people in Flint in 2015?

106.What can we learn from what Mari said to teenagers in the last paragraph?
Passage 4
Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
Golden Generation
This year, several young athletes shone brightly at the Beijing Winter Olympics, giving us a chance to see their generation’s nature.
Obviously, the young generation is filled with “brave fighters” who want to challenge (挑战) impossibilities. Gu Ailing is a good example. After she finished strong in the first two jumps in the women’s freeski Big Air event (女子自由滑雪大跳越), it was certain that she could get a medal. But instead of playing it safe, the 18-year-old skier pushed herself to the limit. On the last jump, Gu decided to try a more difficult trick (动作).
“I’m an 18-year-old girl living my best life. I’m having a great time” Gu said. “It doesn’t really matter whether other people are happy or not, because I feel I’m doing my best and I’m enjoying the whole process.”
Gu’s good friend, Chinese snowboarder Su Yiming also shares a similar attitude. He takes sports as a way to have fun. The 17-year-old boy didn’t feel upset when he was judged to have lost the gold. Instead, he enjoyed the chance to compete with his idol, the Canadian athlete Max Parrot.
“On the podium (领奖台), when my idol hugged me tightly, I was satisfied. All I did today was enjoying the competition and focusing on my tricks. As long as I am on my snowboard, I am delighted.” Su said.

School tests can be stressful. But they might also encourage you to help change the world. Three girls, Kristen, Jenna and Marisa from New York, learned about a growing problem from a reading test they took. The problem is e-waste, short for electronic waste (电子垃圾). The girls learned that some dangerous chemicals in e-waste can damage the environment and people.
Afterwards, they had to come up with an idea for a science project. They remembered the interesting topic from their test. So the girls started a recycling drive to help other students and the community learn about properly (合理地) recycling e-waste. They called themselves the E-Waste Girls. They put recycling boxes in the school hall and asked the students to collect old cell phones, radios and other items. When the boxes were full, they sent them to a special recycling center. The recyclers took out the dangerous chemicals and disposed of (处理) them properly, so that they don’t go into the air or the ground or the water.
One big way people can help reduce e-waste is to buy smartly. So the girls strongly advised people to consider electronics made with fewer dangerous chemicals and choose electronics that will last several years.
Be careful not to admire the things the host owns, because he or she’ll feel necessary to give an item to you as a gift.

Passage 3
Would you like to adopt an animal? Although this sounds very unusual, some children have done just this. The Natural Zoo has given people the chance to adopt animals by paying for all of its food for one year. One of the animals that needed parents was a young tiger named Brocky. The people at the zoo said that it would cost about $900 a year for the food for Brocky.
Not many boys and girls have $900 to spend. That is why several hundred children and grown-ups each have sent a little money to the zoo to help pay for Brocky’s food. Some children sent in only a quarter because that was all the money they had. Other children sent in more money than that.

So if you’re feeling a big sweaty, or you think you might be genetically designed to be a mosquito’s dinner, then pack some extra repellents (驱蚊剂) when you go out.

Passage 3
