She’s the oldest woman in the world to have completed a marathon. She was 92 years 194 days old when she crossed the finish line at the 2022 Honolulu Marathon, setting the record for the oldest female to complete a marathon. Mathea, now 94, of Koloa, Hawaii, USA, stays in shape all year round by running seven days a week, no matter what the weather is. Come rain or shine, she covers 36 miles every week, even when she’s on holiday. The retired doctor didn’t take up running until she was 46 years old —after a friend suggested running two miles per day. “The Honolulu Marathon is my favorite marathon mainly because it doesn’t close the gate at a certain time, which allows even the slowest runner to finish the race,” she said. “It’s one of the best races. Fantastic registration (注册), set-up and management make it a joy to run the race.” Mathea, who doesn’t allow her age to slow her down, thinks she is the happiest person when she’s on the road. She enjoys running for miles and waving and saying hello to the people she passes. To stay in shape, Mathea keeps a steady training routine (惯例) . “I train all year round but increase the mileage 18 weeks before a marathon,” she said. Mathea said it was her career as a doctor that allowed her to understand how her body and mind respond to diet and exercise. “I see the direct relation between moving and health,” she said. “It is important to reduce stress rather than ignoring it without a plan on how to do so. Of course, exercise of any kind is a natural stress reducer.” Mathea thought getting through the finish line and winning a Guinness World Record title was the excitement of her life. “My family completely surprised me after the 2022 Honolulu Marathon, in which I achieved the world record, by wearing matching T-shirts stating my achievements,” she said. 4. What do we know about Mathea from the first two paragraphs? A. She used to be in poor health. B. She is the oldest to win a marathon. C. She runs daily regardless of the weather. D. She was encouraged by her patient to run. 5. Why is Mathea keen on the Honolulu Marathon? A. It gives winners the best awards. B. It provides runners with quality service.. C. It has no time limit for runners to finish. D. It allows runners to set a world record easily. 6. What led to Mathea’s understanding of the connection between moving and health? A. Her professional experience. B. Her training courses. C. Her views on stress in life. D. Her hobby from young. 7. What message does Mathea’s story deliver? A. Practice makes perfect. B. Interest is the best teacher. C. Age is no barrier to success. D. Ups and downs make one strong. C For those of us who grew up watching Star Trek, exploring space has been about discovering strange new worlds. And there are plenty of worlds to explore in time, but we still need major technological advancements to reach planets that are light years away. What we are doing in space today is providing unbelievable benefits right now, right here on Earth. From space, we can monitor, manage and care for our planet. Satellite-based sensors show us the short- and long-term effects of human activity on our environment. Many companies are using their interest in space to help solve problems here, from using hyperspectral imaging(高光谱成像), which enable us to map vegetation(植被) and rain forests, to microsatellites that provide global connectivity for the network of things. My company, OneWeb, is focusing on what I believe is one of the world’s most important issues: the need for equal access to the Internet. The Internet has become our economic lifeblood. And yet, nearly half of the world’s population doesn’t have Internet access. Space is playing a key role in bridging this digital divide. OneWeb is launching 1,980 satellites to help bring Internet access to people everywhere, and our first production satellites are already flying in space and have shown very high download speeds. Fiber and cable Internet access technologies already cover most financially viable(可行的) major cities. Similarly, these regions will also be the first to be served with 5G. Poor communities are the last to get connected, and without connectivity, those communities have no chance to lift themselves from poverty. OneWeb’s satellites will reach every community in the world and enable equal access to the Internet for the world’s less developed places. Fifty years from the day when man first walked on the moon, we are still only approaching the possible. There will be tens of thousands of new satellites, space stations and factories in the coming years to bring advancements in communications, scientific research, monitoring the earth, exploring space and more. This is exciting, but we must take action carefully. 8. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. Benefits space exploration can bring to us. B Problems space exploration leads to. C. Steps of space exploration requires. D. Equipment space exploration needs. 9. What is OneWeb aiming to do? A. Increase download speeds. B. Narrow the gap in Internet learning. C. Help people set up and maintain a website. D. Enable people to make use of the Internet equally. 10. What can be inferred from the text? A. More than six decades ago, man first walked on the moon. B. More than half of the world’s people have no access to the Internet. C. OneWeb’s satellites will make it possible for most people to be served with 5G. D. Without the Internet, poor communities can hardly help themselves out of poverty. 11. What will the writer probably continue to write about in the following paragraph? A. The risks of furthering space exploration. B. The value of setting up space stations. C. The way we could monitor our earth. D. The features of microsatellites. D Phonetic (语音) information—the smallest sound elements of speech - is considered by researchers to be the basis of language. Babies are thought to learn these small sound elements and add them together to make words. But a new study suggests that phonetic information is learnt too late and slowly for this to be the case. Instead, rhythmic (有韵律的) speech helps babies learn language and is effective even in the first few months of life. Researchers from the Trinity College Dublin investigated babies’ ability to process phonetic information during their first year. Their study, published in the journal Nature Communications. found that phonetic information wasn’t successfully encoded (编码) until seven months old, and did not occur very often at 11 months old when babies began to say their first words. From then individual speech sounds are still added in very slowly—too slowly to form the basis of language. The researchers recorded patterns of brain activity in 50 babies at four, seven, and eleven months old as they watched a video of a primary school teacher singing 18 nursery rhymes (童谣) to a baby. They found that phonetic encoding in babies appeared inchmeal over the first year of life, beginning with labial sounds (e.g. “d” for “daddy”) and nasal sounds (e.g. “m” for “mummy”), with the “read out” progressively looking more like that of adults. “The reason why we use nursery rhymes is because that is the best way for babies to discover and connect sounds with language, so we are teaching them how to speak,” said Giovanni Di Liberto, lead author of the study at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. “Parents should talk and sing to their babies as much as possible or use baby-directed speech because it will make a difference to language outcome,” she added. 12. What should babies learn in the first few months of life according to the new study? A. Small sound elements B. Rhythmic information. C. Phonetic information. D. Individual words. 13. What does the author mainly discuss in paragraph 2? A. The poor phonetic encoding in babies. B. The advantages of phonetic information. C. The babies’ great ability to learn language. D. The babies’ growing process in the first year. 14 What does the underlined word “inchmeal” mean in paragraph 3? A. Gradually. B. Suddenly. C. Successfully. D. Occasionally. 15. What is the best title of the text? A. When Babies Are Able to Say Their First Words B. How Phonetic Information Changes Over Time C. Why Phonetic Is Better Than Rhythmic for Babies D. Why Babies Need Nursery Rhymes for Language Mastery The daily life can be busy and at times difficult. It may sometimes feel like bringing just a little more inner peace and calmness into your life is a hopeless wish.___16___ Small and smart changes can make a big difference over time. But on this Wednesday afternoon, there was a roar of laughter that spread through the halls. It was coming from a table in the back. Books were piled so high that one could barely see the source of all the noise. Brian and Josie were hiding behind the mountain of history texts, their faces bright red from laughing. Mrs Cane, the librarian, followed the laughter and then approached the table. As she cleared her throat and looked over the piles of books, Brian and Josie looked up to meet her gaze. Mrs Cane looked at the books, then at the kids. “And what is it you two are supposed to be working on?” Brian hesitated a moment, and then answered, “We’re working on a paper for our history class.” “I see,” Mrs Cane said harshly. “Perhaps one of the private reading rooms would be a better place for you to concentrate and study. Quietly.” The kids collected their books and their backpacks and followed Mrs Cane down a long hallway until they got to a dark row of doors. Mrs Cane pulled out a ring of keys from her pocket and unlocked a door. She turned on the light, which shone brightly overhead. The kids placed their books on the dusty table and reluctantly (不情愿地) climbed into the chairs. Brian and Josie shrugged (耸肩) and opened their books, finally focusing on the project at hand. Time was ticking away. After what seemed like hours, Brian and Josie decided to take a break and when Josie opened the door of the room, Brian’s eyes opened wide. The library was completely dark. Looking at his watch, he let out a gasp. “It’s 9:30! The library closed an hour ago!” Paragraph 1: Brian looked through his backpack for his cellphone. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: They heard a noise that sounded like a telephone ringing. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1. 4. B. Problems space exploration leads to. A 9. D 10. D 11. 根据第二段首句“What we are doing in space today is providing unbelievable benefits right now, right here on Earth.(我们今天在太空中所做的一切,在地球上此时此地正在提供令人难以置信的好处。)” 故选A。 根据第三段中的“My company, OneWeb, is focusing on what I believe is one of the world’s most important issues: the need for equal access to the Internet. This is exciting, but we must take action carefully.(未来几年,将有数以万计的新卫星、空间站和工厂,为通信、科学研究、地球监测、太空探索等领域带来进步。这是令人兴奋的,但我们必须谨慎地采取行动。)”可知,作者在文章最后提到,虽然未来我们将继续在太空中取得进度,但我们需要谨慎采取行动,由此可推测,接下来可能会讲述进一步探索太空有可能遇到的风险,这属于导致要谨慎行动的潜在因素。故选A。 D Phonetic (语音) information—the smallest sound elements of speech - is considered by researchers to be the basis of language. 14. What does the underlined word “inchmeal” mean in paragraph 3? A. Gradually. B. Suddenly. C. Successfully. D. Occasionally. 15. What is the best title of the text? A. When Babies Are Able to Say Their First Words B. How Phonetic Information Changes Over Time C. Why Phonetic Is Better Than Rhythmic for Babies D. Why Babies Need Nursery Rhymes for Language Mastery 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. A 15. 根据第一段的“But a new study suggests that phonetic information is learnt too late and slowly for this to be the case. Instead, rhythmic (有韵律的) speech helps babies learn language and is effective even in the first few months of life.(但一项新的研究表明,语音信息的学习太迟,而且速度太慢,因此情况并非如此。相反,有节奏的语言有助于婴儿学习语言,即使在生命的最初几个月也是有效的。)”可知,一项新的研究表明,语音信息学习得太晚,速度太慢。相反有节奏的语言在生命的最初几个月是有效的。由此推断,根据最新研究,婴儿在出生的头几个月应该首先学习有韵律的语言信息。故选B。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Researchers from the Trinity College Dublin investigated babies’ ability to process phonetic information during their first year. Their study, published in the journal Nature Communications. found that phonetic information wasn’t successfully encoded (编码) until seven months old, and did not occur very often at 11 months old when babies began to say their first words. From then individual speech sounds are still added in very slowly—too slowly to form the basis of language.(都柏林圣三一学院的研究人员调查了婴儿在一岁时处理语音信息的能力。 故选A。 根据下文“beginning with labial sounds (e.g. “d” for “daddy”) and nasal sounds (e.g. “m” for “mummy”), with the “read out” progressively looking more like that of adults(从唇音(例如“d”代表“daddy”)和鼻音(例如“m”代表“mummy”)开始,逐渐地“读出”看起来更像成年人的发音)”可推断,研究人员发现,婴儿出生后第一年,语音编码逐渐出现。 通读全文,根据第一段的“Instead, rhythmic (有韵律的) speech helps babies learn language and is effective even in the first few months of life.(相反,有节奏的语言有助于婴儿学习语言,即使在生命的最初几个月也是有效的。)”和最后一段的“The reason why we use nursery rhymes is because that is the best way for babies to discover and connect sounds with language, so we are teaching them how to speak(我们使用童谣的原因是因为这是婴儿发现声音和语言联系的最好方式,因此我们在教他们如何说话)”和“Parents should talk and sing to their babies as much as possible or use baby-directed speech because it will make a difference to language outcome(父母应该尽可能多地和他们的宝宝说话和唱歌,或者使用婴儿导向语,因为这将对语言结果产生影响)”可知,文章主要讲述根据最新研究,婴儿在出生的头几个月应该首先学习有韵律的语言信息。 The daily life can be busy and at times difficult. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1 Brian looked through his backpack for his cellphone. Unfortunately, there was no cellphone inside. “I left my phone at home so we can not call anyone for help!” Brian cried out, and looked at Josie anxiously. Josie turned back, “Calm down, Brian. I remember seeing a telephone at the entrance to the library, maybe we can reach Mrs Cane on the telephone.” Then, in a hurry, Brian put the books into his backpack and left the room with Josie. It was dark outside, and the two kids tried to figure out where they should go. Slowly, they were inching towards the entrance, comforting each other. Paragraph 2 They heard a noise that sounded like a telephone ringing. They felt their way in the darkness toward the sound, and found a telephone on the wall. Trembling with excitement, Brian answered the phone, and heard Mrs Cane’s voice on the line: “Sorry, Brian. I forgot you and Josie were in the library. Now I’m coming to get you guys out.” Hanging up the phone, Brian breathed a sigh of relief. Just in a second, Mrs Cane arrived. Excited and overjoyed, Mrs Cane rushed forward and hugged the kids tightly, praising their calmness. It was through this accidental experience that Brian and Josie learned there is always a way out when a problem arises. 词汇激活 行为类 ①颤抖:tremble/shake ②联系:reach/get in touch with ③出现:arise/appear 情绪类 ①激动:excitement/thrill ②忧虑地:anxiously /with anxiety 【点睛】[高分句型1] Slowly, they were inching towards the entrance, comforting each other.
