I loved books from a very young age, and they opened my mind to all kinds of possibilities. I journeyed with Meg Murry to save her family; I learned about friendship and sacrifice (牺牲) from Charlotte’s Web. Books helped me understand what it was like to walk in someone else’s shoes; they helped me dream about imaginary worlds.
Despite reading all kinds of stories, I never read one about someone like me. I didn’t realize what I was missing until as an adult, I finally read a story that reflected some of my personal experiences. That book was The Namesake. This was world-changing for me. It made me recognize how powerful it is to see yourself in a book, and it made me realize that every person — especially every young person — deserves to feel this way.
While my children were growing up, we read all kinds of books together, and the range of voices in children’s literature was wider ... but still not wide enough.
When I started writing, it took me a while to stop writing about “typical” Americans and start writing about people who shared my own background. I still hadn’t truly realized that others might be interested in reading stories about people like me — that our stories are worthy of being told. Once I started writing these kinds of stories, I couldn’t stop.
I’m honored to join so many authors from diverse backgrounds who are writing books for young people today. We use our lived experiences and our imaginations to bring new stories to light — stories that reflect the incredible world in which we live.
Looking forward, I hope to see an even greater range of stories in children’s literature. To prepare to be a citizen in our diverse world, every child needs to gain insight into people who are not exactly like them. And I hope that every child gets to experience the thrill of seeing themselves in a book so they know they are understood, appreciated, and loved, so they recognize that they can be the heroes of their own stories.
24. Which word best describes the author’s relationship with books as a child?
A. Cooperative. B. Sensitive. C. Inseparable. D. Uncomfortable.
25. What did the author realize after reading The Namesake?
A. The power of a reflection of one’s own life in literature.
B. The ability of adults to appreciate the impact of literature.
C. The necessity for authors to share their own experiences.
D. The poor quality of children’s literature on an individual.
26. What does the underlined word “thrill” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Relief. B. Surprise. C. Anxiety. D. Excitement.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Reading journey: journeys for your adventures
B. Seeing ourselves: stories worthy of being told
C. Original stories: stories that are not adapted
D. Books of my life: books affecting me most
C
When you hear the beginning of your favorite song from the radio, suddenly your neck is covered in goose bumps.
It's such a thing that a group of scientists call “skin excitement”—a feeling of cold caused not by a drop in temperature or sudden scare, but by the sense of beauty. “Skin excitement” can come from a song, a painting, a moving movie scene, or even a beloved memory-pretty much anything that causes the giving out of pleasure-soaked dopamine in your brain. But it does not come for all of us.
Your favorite music uncovers a lot about your personality, and so does how you respond to that music. Studies suppose that as few as 55 percent of people experience “skin excitement” when listening to music. And if you count yourself among this group, the goose bumps on your skin aren't the only giveaway—scientists can read it in your brain, too. In a new study published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, Harvard researchers performed brain scans on 10 students who said they reliably got cold when listening to music, and 10 students who didn't. They found that the cold-prone brains may really be excited by stronger emotions.
Cold-prone brains are generally more likely to show stronger emotional intelligence than no-cold brains. Cold-prone minds tend to have unusual active imagination, reflect more deeply on their emotions, and appreciate nature and the beauty of music and art to a stronger degree than no-cold brains.
So, what type of music causes the chills? It seems that the type is not so important; participants in the new study reported getting cold from songs of every kind. And any song connected with a strong emotional memory of the listener can produce the most reliable results. For me, that's the song Sailing to Philadelphia by Mark Knopfler, which I listened to as a kid in the car with my dad, on the way to the summer camp.
28. What can we learn about “skin excitement” in the text?
A. It helps to produce doparmine. B. It is caused by the pain in the skin.
C. It can be experienced by every music listener. D. It is the human body's reaction to something nice.
29. What does the new study by Harvard researchers mainly find?
A. The percentage of music lovers in students.
B. The solutions to the goose bumps on one's skin.
C. The differences between cold-prone and no-cold brains.
D. The relationship between one's music preference and personality.
30 What are people with cold-prone brains like?
A. Beautiful and intelligent. B. Emotional and dishonest.
C. Imaginative and sensitive. D. Brave and strong-minded.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Responses to Music Vary among People B. A Feeling of Cold Is Caused by Horrible Music
C. Your Favorite Music Reveals Your Personality D. Favorite Music May Bring Forth Goose Bumps
D
If you’re someone who has been worrying about the rise of the robots—hold on there just a second, and let them help you impress your friends with some newfound skills in a foreign language. Using artificial intelligence (AI) to help us learn and improve those skills is not new—some of the online language tools we turn to every day are powered by AI.
But as new technologies flood into the market, now is a great time to take advantage of the tech. And according to experts, these tools aren’t replacing teachers—they’re making their lives easier. One of the things that stops some of us from practicing speaking in a new language is a lack of self-confidence. AI can help—chatbots don’t judge you. Of course, teachers don’t either, but for some people, communicating with a bot may erase that fear of failure or shyness.
The latest chatbots use something called natural language processing that allows them to understand human speech or writing providing a human-like response right away. While chatbots are extremely useful for learners working individually, teachers can also offer course material and ask an AI system to produce personalized textbooks for groups of students. The AI can also provide feedback (反馈) in seconds—gone are the days of waiting a week for work to be graded.
Past online language tools and games were able to tell you when you were wrong, but they weren’t always able to explain why. Now, not only has that changed, but the explanations are detailed and immediate. But this is not to underestimate the role of the teacher, who can use the technology to help learn more about the strengths and shortcomings of their students and personalize their teaching.
So, if you want to impress your friends with your perfect speech, don’t be afraid of AI. Just think of it as a useful tool for both teachers and language learners, which will give you more time and space to enjoy learning something new!
32. What is the main idea of the article?
A. The dangers of Al-robots.
B. The history of online language tools.
C. The benefits of AI in language learning.
D. The role of teachers in the modern classroom.
33. Why might someone prefer communicating with a bot?
A. Because bots grade work faster.
B. Because bots provide textbooks.
C. Because bots are more knowledgeable.
D. Because bots may remove the fear of failure or shyness.
34. What is the benefit of AI producing personalized textbooks?
A. It saves time for teachers. B. It reduces the cost of education.
C. It meets individual students’ needs. D. It provides detailed lesson plans.
35. What word might replace the underlined word “shortcoming” in paragraph 4?
A. weakness. B. awareness. C. witness. D. darkness.

Lost & Found
Emily was very sad because her little sister drew pictures on her science project. This was not the first time that her sister had ruined her school work. So, Emily requested her parents to buy her a study table with drawers (抽屉) where she could safely keep her books.
Emily’s parents could not afford to buy a new table. However, they agreed to buy her a second-hand table. One day after school, Emily’s mother took her to the second-hand store so that she could buy the table of her choice. By accident, she opened a drawer in an old black table. And, guess what? A small plastic bag with some dollar bills!
“Maybe I have found somebody’s secret bag. Am I the luckiest twelve-year-old? My birthday is coming up soon. With this money, I can buy myself great presents. And maybe I can even buy things for my family.” Emily thought. She stared at it with greedy (贪婪的) eyes and quickly pushed the bag to the end of the drawer. She told her mother she wanted that black table and later it was organized in her room.
When everybody left, she locked the room, quickly opened the drawer and took the plastic bag with dollars out. There was a note in the money bag. It seemed that some old lady was saving the money for her children and grandchildren. She could hear her heart beat louder and louder when finally she counted twelve thousand dollars.
But now, with the money she had, she thought that she would have to make up many lies to spend it. She would have to hide the money all the time. She thought, “This money is not meant for me.” She had felt the worst fear of getting caught from the moment she thought of stealing.

M: That’s right, quite differently. One day one of my American friends looked pale, so I asked him whether he was sick or not. But he was not willing to answer me.
W: That’s strange.
M: And what’s more, when he told me he had been sick with a cold for several days, I suggested he go to the hospital as soon as possible.
W: That shows you really cared about your friend,
M: Yeah. But he responded by saying, what do you mean?
W: I’m confused? Why did he say that?
M: I thought the same way at first. Later, he told me that it’s not a good idea to give people suggestions about what to do when they are sick. But back in China, giving advice is always regarded as being kind.
W: Absolutely. But now I understand why he responded that way.

A 19. C 20. B
W: For a long time, people have been bearing their garbage. Unfortunately, there is less and less empty land, but can be used as garbage places in our planet to yet more and more garbage is being produced each year. How should we manage our garbage? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs?
These are two of the most important questions in the modern world, and many people are trying to find the answers. Some people think that we might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest that garbage should be used as an energy source. For example, some cities in the United States have been burning garbage to create fuel for years.
But studies have shown that it is not a good idea. Burning garbage for energy causes many serious problems. Garbage that burns easily, such as plastics and paper, must be separated from metals, glass and other materials that do not burn easily. This separation process is very costly, therefore not being done in most places. Another huge problem with burning garbage is air pollution.

D. Books of my life: books affecting me most
B 25. A 26. D 27. B
根据第一段“I loved books from a very young age, and they opened my mind to all kinds of possibilities. I journeyed with Meg Murry to save her family; I learned about friendship and sacrifice (牺牲)from Charlotte’s Web. Books helped me understand what it was like to walk in someone else’s shoes; they helped me dream about imaginary worlds.”( 我从很小的时候就喜欢读书,它们打开了我的思维,让我有了各种各样的可能性。
根据文章第一段“This was world-changing for me. It made me recognize how powerful it is to see yourself in a book, and it made me realize that every person —especially every young person—deserves to feel this way.”(这对我来说是改变世界的事情。
根据文章最后一段“so they know they are understood, appreciated, and loved, so they recognize that they can be the heroes of their own stories.”(这样他们就知道他们被理解、被欣赏和被爱,他们认识到他们可以成为自己故事的英雄。)
根据最后一段“Looking forward, I hope to see an even greater range of stories in children’s literature. To prepare to be a citizen in our diverse world, every child needs to gain insight into people who are not exactly like them. And I hope that every child gets to experience the thrill of seeing themselves in a book so they know they are understood, appreciated, and loved, so they recognize that they can be the heroes of their own stories.”(展望未来,我希望在儿童文学中看到更多的故事。
30. What are people with cold-prone brains like?
A. Beautiful and intelligent. B. Emotional and dishonest.
C. Imaginative and sensitive. D. Brave and strong-minded.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Responses to Music Vary among People B. A Feeling of Cold Is Caused by Horrible Music
C. Your Favorite Music Reveals Your Personality D. Favorite Music May Bring Forth Goose Bumps
D 29. C 30. C 31. D

根据第二段中“It's such a thing that a group of scientists call “skin excitement”—a feeling of cold caused not by a drop in temperature or sudden scare, but by the sense of beauty. “Skin excitement” can come from a song, a painting, a moving movie scene, or even a beloved memory-pretty much anything that causes the giving out of pleasure-soaked dopamine in your brain.(一组科学家称这种现象为“皮肤兴奋”——不是因为温度下降或突然的恐惧而产生的寒冷感觉,而是因为美好。“皮肤兴奋”可以来自一首歌、一幅画、一个感人的电影场景,甚至是一段心爱的回忆——几乎任何能让你大脑中充满愉悦的多巴胺释放出来的东西)”可知,“皮肤兴奋”在本文中是指人体对美好事物的一种反应。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“In a new study published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, Harvard researchers performed brain scans on 10 students who said they reliably got cold when listening to music, and 10 students who didn't. They found that the cold-prone brains may really be excited by stronger emotions.(在一项发表在《社会认知与情感神经科学》杂志上的新研究中,哈佛大学的研究人员对10名学生进行了脑部扫描,这些学生说他们在听音乐时确实感到寒冷,而另外10名学生没有。他们发现,容易发冷的大脑可能真的会被更强烈的情绪激发)”可知,这项新研究的成果主要是发现了容易发冷的大脑和不发冷大脑的区别。故选C。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Cold-prone brains are generally more likely to show stronger emotional intelligence than no-cold brains. Cold-prone minds tend to have unusual active imagination, reflect more deeply on their emotions, and appreciate nature and the beauty of music and art to a stronger degree than no-cold brains.

The latest chatbots use something called natural language processing that allows them to understand human speech or writing, providing a human-like response right away.
B Because bots provide textbooks.
A. weakness. B. awareness. C. witness. D. darkness.
C 33. D 34. C 35. A

根据文章第一段“Using articial itelligence (AI) to help us leam and improve those skills is not new—some of the online language tools we turn to every day are powered by AL.(使用人工智能(AI)来帮助我们学习和提高这些技能并不是什么新鲜事,我们每天使用的一些在线语言工具就是由人工智能驱动的。)”以及最后一段“So, if you want to impress your friends with your perfect speech, don’t be afraid of AI. Just think of it as a useful tool for both teachers and language learners, which will give you more time and space to enjoy learning something new!(所以,如果你想用你完美的演讲给你的朋友留下深刻印象,不要害怕AI。只要认为它是一个对老师和语言学习者都有用的工具,它会给你更多的时间和空间来享受学习一些新的东西!)”以及其他段落的内容可知,本文主要围绕着人工智能在语言学习中带给人们的好处来展开,因此C项The benefits of AI in language learning.
根据文章第二段“One of the things that stops some of us from practicing speaking in a new language is a lack of self-confidence. Al can nelp—chatbots don’t judge you. Of course, teachers don’t either, but for some people, communicating with a bot may erase that fear of failure or shyness.(阻止我们中的一些人练习说一种新的语言的原因之一是缺乏自信。聊天机器人不会评判你。当然,老师也不知道,但对一些人来说,与机器人交流可能会消除对失败或害羞的恐惧。)”可知,有人更喜欢和机器人交流是因为机器人可以消除对失败的恐惧或害羞。故选D项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“While chatbots are extremely useful for learners working individually, teachers can also offer course material and ask an AI system to produce personalized textbooks for groups of students. (虽然聊天机器人对于单独工作的学习者非常有用,但教师也可以提供课程材料,并要求智能系统为学生群体制作个性化的教科书。)” 可知,人工智能制作个性化教科书的好处是它可以满足学生的个性化需求。故选C项。
【35题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词之前“But this is not to underestimate the role of the teacher, who can use the technology to help learn more about the strengths and(但这并不是要低估了教师的角色,他可以利用技术来帮助更多了解学生的优势和)”以及划线词之后“of their students and personalize their teaching.(并个性化他们的教学。)” 故选A项。

Some students think it’s a good idea to keep pets because old people who live alone at home can get some comfort from pets. Besides, getting along well with animals will make our life interesting. On the contrary, the other students are against the idea. In their opinion, if too many people keep pets at home, it is bad for the environment.

Finally, she called her parents into her room. She showed them the money and told them that she had seen the bag in the store and stole it in this way. She had lost her honesty but she wanted to regain it back. “Let us take it back to the store and try to find the old lady’s family.” Emily told her parents. Emily’s parents did not get mad at her but appreciated her honesty.
The store owner was quite surprised on hearing the story. “You mean that you found almost twelve thousand dollars and you are here to return it?” he asked. Looking through the records, he found the family’s telephone number. Half an hour later, the family came over to the store. They were still sad about losing their beloved. It turned out that Emily brought them timely help, because they were in great need of money. Emily’s parents had tears in their eyes, feeling proud that their daughter had passed an important test—the lost and found test of honesty.
