There is a close relationship between humans and dogs for thousands of years. We love dogs for many reasons, including their loyalty (忠诚的), their sense of fun and how soft they are. Now researchers have found another reason why humans might like dogs: their wagging (摇摆的) tails.
A research team looked at more than 100 studies on tail-wagging. They noted that dogs wag their tails to communicate, but different types of tail-wagging might be sending different messages.
The research team came up with two possible explanations. The first has something with the rhythm of tail-wagging. Rhythm is repeated sounds or movements—it’s an important part of music. Humans love music, too. So they chose to make friends with dogs that wagged their tails more. Then this tail-wagging would have been passed down to the dogs’ children.
The second explanation is that humans chose dogs for other reasons, such as tameness (温顺), and dogs with these features happened to wag their tails more. This would make tail-wagging a side effect of domestication (驯养).
More research is needed because no one really understands how or why wagging happens. One of the team, Andrea Ravignani, told the science.org website that there is a lot of work to be done. “We still don’t know exactly which parts of the dog brain control which features of the tail-wagging,” she said.

As the saying goes, “The roses in her hand, the flavor (味道) in mine.”
A few years ago, a friend gave me a restaurant gift card, and I picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. It felt good taking my family to a nice restaurant. The meal was delicious, and we all had a good time together. The gift card covered almost all of the check (账单). I reached into my wallet to get enough money to cover the rest. I saw two bills (钞票) inside. The first would cover the rest of the check. The second would cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip (小费). I reached down to pick the first one.
At that moment, my mind went back to 30 years ago. I was working in a restaurant much like this one. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness in their faces at the end of the day.
I was back in the present again, with my fingers touching the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled, pushed it back down and picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hard-working waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and a happy heart.
We are all one family in this world. Do your best to be kind. Do your best to be a good person and replace pain with joy.

I could tell he was a little slower than me and I decided to catch up with him. It was about one kilometer to go on the road before I had to turn off, so I started cycling faster and faster.
Every block, I was gaining on him just a little bit. In a few minutes, I was only about 100 meters behind him. I got so excited that I really picked up speed, trying my best to push myself.

And after riding past him, I was aware (意识到) I had missed my turn as a result of being so focused (专注的) on competing with him. I had gone almost six blocks further and had to turn around and go all the way back.

①According to UNESCO, there are 740 million people unable to read or write in this world. And 250 million children of primary school age have no basic reading and writing skills. However, reading makes everything possible in life: education, work and escaping poverty (贫困). Considering that, the Global School Community aims to bring digital books to all the children of the world and their families.
②Digital technology makes a real difference. It can reach across the world and is fairly inexpensive. The Global School Community makes e-books available to children all around the world, either through mobile phones, pads or computers, saving the cost of making books and transport. Technology also helps improve our communication skills. Through the use of technology, schooling (远程教学) is one example of the success of communication through the Internet.
③The first books a child reads can have a great influence on that child. The greater the influence, the more likely the child is to continue reading and learning throughout his life. E-books not only provide knowledge and information, but help people grow healthily in mind. They can provide hours of entertainment and can connect schools all over the world. Studies have shown that children make much progress after only five months of reading e-books. Bido Hafrag, a child from Egypt, said, “Reading e-books not only helps me learn to read and write, but gives me much confidence. It also helps me have a better understanding of the world.”

阅读下列短文,并用英语回答问题(请注意每小题后面的词数要求)。
It was a fine afternoon. As I was riding a bike home from my office as usual. I noticed a person cycling in front of me, about 300 meters away.
Finally, I made it. I passed him by and felt pretty good on the inside at that moment. I beat him, of course, but he didn’t even know we were racing. He was still cycling slowly along the street.
And after riding past him, I was aware (意识到) I had missed my turn as a result of being so focused (专注的) on competing with him. I had gone almost six blocks further and had to turn around and go all the way back.
Is that what happens in life when we pay too much attention to others, trying to pass them and prove that we are more successful? We spend our time and energy chasing (追逐) after them and at last we miss out on our own directions. So _____________________________
