Don’t be disheartened if you are not able to get an A in a semester. What’s important is having the drive to go forward. As a famous person once said, “He who would climb a ladder must begin at the bottom.

Bring a shareable treat to class

Jenny Smith, 34, an assistant vice-president at a bank in New York, was interviewing a large number of candidates(候选人)for a position which required a person with good communication skills.
One candidate in particular stood out, but not in a good way. While she could have been very intelligent, her body language sent out very different messages. Her handshake was more of a finger shake, and her eye contact was weak.
To Jenny, what the candidate said didn’t matter because her body language said everything: she wasn’t suitable for the position. The candidate may have been quite appropriate, but she didn’t manage to get that across. So our body language may not do us justice. But there are some signals which are very common and are worth a thousand words.
For example, a handshake can say much more than “Hello, nice to meet you ” The most important part of a handshake is palm-to-palm(掌对掌) contact. It’s even more important than how strong your handshake is. The palm-to-palm contact makes people seem honest: it seems to say “I am sincere(真诚的).” A weak handshake — when the palms don’t touch - makes you seem unfriendly, insincere.
But people sometimes use body language to give each other the wrong impression. Somebody who has a firm handshake may be pretending to be sincere, and somebody with a weak handshake may just be a bit shy and nothing more.
Body language can also be overdone. While eye contact gives an impression of friendliness, too much eye contact or eve contact which is too intense (强烈的)can make people feel uncomfortable.
24. Why did the candidate fail to get the job?
A. She wasn’t clever enough.
B. Her body language was improper.
C. She said something wrong.
D. Her attitude was bad.
25. What should you do when you shake someone’s hand?
A. Hold his hand with great strength.
B. Make frequent eye contact.
C. Say something sincere.
D. Make palm-to-palm contact.
26. What can we learn about body language from paragraph 6?
A. It may give other people the false opinion.
B. It is much More important than what you say.
C. It tells other people what you are really like.
D. It is ignored by most people.
27. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To stress body language’s role in job-hunting.
B. To Show why handshakes are important.
C. To introduce body language.
D. To explain what communication skills are.

A group of farmers in Nigeria is using a technology-based method to grow crops from small drops of water in the air. The method, known as aeroponics (气雾栽培),does not involve soil. Instead, plant roots hang in the air.
Aeroponics is not well known in Nigeria, but farmers there are working to make the technique more popular. The technique could make a big difference in places like the city of Abeokuta. Conflicts and desertification -- the process by which rich land becomes desert -- have made huge amounts of land unsuitable for farming.
Biochemist Samson Ogbole is popularly known as Nigeria’s smart farmer. He and his team are growing crops without soil at the technology-based farm they started three years ago in Abeokuta. “We are putting an end to seasonal food shortages in Nigeria,” said Ogbole. “Because we are the ones controlling everything that the plant requires, we are not depending on seasons. So it’s no longer seasonal farming. It is just farming anytime of the year, meaning you can plant anytime of the year. We can harvest anytime of the year.”
But setting up the aeroponic farm was not easy. It required more than $180,000, Ogbole said. And, some people in Abeokuta were very much against this non-traditional method of farming. “It took a lot of effort to change people's minds about aeroponics,” said Ogbole.
In Nigeria, about 30 million hectares (公项) of farmland is being used, instead of the 78.5 million hectares required for food security. Conflicts and desertification are the top reasons the farmland is being lost. And only 49 percent of the land is rich. Besides, most farmers lack the technical knowledge to increase productivity. They also need access to high-quality seeds (种子)for better harvests.
For now, technologically skilled farmers like Samson Ogbole are offering a new way forward.
28. What is special about aeroponics?
A. Crops can grow without air.
B. Crops can grow without water.
C. Crops can grow without soil.
D. Crops can grow without roots.
29. Why is aeroponics especially important to Abeokuta?
A. There are not enough farmers.
B. There isn’t sufficient rich land.
C. Farming methods there are unscientific.
D. The climate there is not suitable for farming.
30. What does aeroponics enable farmers to do?
A. Reduce the costs of farming.
B. Keep crops for a longer period.
C. Produce higher-quality crops.
D. Grow crops whenever they want.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new method of growing crops.
B. Solutions to global food shortages.
C. Ways to turn deserts into rich land.
D. An example of ensuring food security.
D
As the world’s population keeps expanding, the demand for food increases, and many farmers look to certain practices to increase their output so as to meet demand. This has led to a widespread use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides; even though these may increase yield and better protect crops, they can have harmful effects on people and the environment. That is why organic produce is becoming more and more popular, because people want to be sure that the food they are taking in is not harmful to them and has no damaging effect on the environment.
Some farmers are shying away from their overreliance(过度依赖)on chemicals in farming and instead turning to an old farming method: integrated rice-duck farming, where farmers would allow ducks into rice fields to help in the farming process.
In a study published in 2013, the researchers studied the effects of integrated rice-duck farming and came to the conclusion that compared with conventional rice cultivation (耕作), rice-duck cultivation shows great benefits to ecological (生态的)cost and economic income Besides, they found that the ducks play various roles. They remove unwanted plants, eat harmful insects, and flatten the field to prepare it for planting the crop, and their droppings act as natural fertilizer. The ducks themselves are also provided with natural food, which increases the quality of their meat.
All in all, rice-duck cultivation seems like a winning method. It can boost the growth of rice, improve soil properties, and prevent plant diseases and harmful insects. Originating in China, this method is being used across Asia and is getting increasingly popular. The use of ducks in farming is also being applied in South Africa, France, and Iran.
32. What makes farmers turn to organic farming?
A. Strong desire for more profits.
B. The reality of increasing population.
C. Health and environmental awareness.
D. The increasing cost of chemical fertilizers.
33. What does the underlined phrase “shying away from” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Avoiding.
B. Placing.
C. Increasing.
D. Ignoring.
34. What can ducks do in the farming process?
A. Drive off harmful insects.
B. Speed up crop planting.
C. Stop the growth of grass.
D. Generate natural fertilizer.
35. What can we infer about rice-duck cultivation from the last paragraph?
A. It has a promising future.
B. Its benefits remain to be seen.
C. It may lose popularity over time.
D. Its application needs in-depth study.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Justin and Mary woke up early, even though they were vacationing at their uncle’s lake house. The night before, Uncle Thomas told them about the Foggy Figure that haunts(经常出没于)the lake. Justin and Mary were determined to see the ghostly creature before their vacation was over.
“Is it foggy outside?” Mary asked, as Justin carefully looked out the window.
“Yup! Let’s go!” Justin let go of the curtain and rushed to the door with Mary.
It was only 5:00 am, so everyone else in the house was still asleep. As they moved quietly through the kitchen to the back door, Mary sniffed(嗅)the air. It had the scent of coffee and something sweet. A sense of hunger struck her. “Maybe we should first have a breakfast,” she thought. But she still followed Justin out the door, down the back steps, and out onto the boat dock. The fog had settled over the lake, making it impossible to see anything.
“Do you see anything?” Mary asked, moving forward for a closer look.
“Nothing. Do you think Uncle Thomas was just trying to scare us with that story?”
Uncle Thomas did have a good imagination. He’d been telling Justin and Mary stories for years, but this was the first scary story. Mary had a feeling it wasn’t made up.
Mary shook her head. “Remember what Uncle Thomas said? The Foggy Figure haunts the lake. We’re on the dock. Maybe that's why we can’t see him. The people in the story were in boats.”
“You want to take a boat ride on the water?” Justin asked.
Mary looked around, trying to find Uncle Thomas's boat, but the fog was too thick.
“Mom and Dad will be really angry if we go out on the lake alone in this fog,” Justin said.
Mery shrugged (耸肩), “Maybe we don’t have to go anywhere. We could sit in the boat while it’s docked. That wouldn’t be dangerous.”
“Okay” Justin moved toward the end of the dock. He could only see the outline of the boat. “I’ll go first.”
注意:续写词数应为 150 左右。
Paragraph 1:
Justin carefully lowered himself into the boat and then reached for Mary’s hand.
Paragraph 2:
Justin and Mary hugged each other in fear, but then they heard a laugh.
