Mice were given a memory test in a lab at the University of New South Wales, in Australia. Scientist Margaret Morris set them in their usual box, but she rearranged the objects in the box. Some mice smelled them curiously, but others just moved on. They didn’t remember the objects were once in a different place.
The mice with sharper memory were fed with a regular diet of low-fat, healthy food. However, the mice that ate lots of junk food for two weeks – such as cake, meat pies, chips, and cookies – were forgetful.
Food can have the same effect on people, too. “If you’re eating junk food regularly, and not eating enough fruit and vegetables,” Morris said, “the changes inside your body may be affecting brain function” Changes inside the body can affect a person’s overall health, too.
Scientists have long known that the brain communicates with the stomach to control digestion. Recently, they have found that the stomach talks back. It may even tell the brain what to do.
Foods with too much salt and sugar affect the microbiome (肠道菌群) in your body by killing the right bacteria (细菌) in it. These bacteria protect you from illness and keep your mind sharp. Lacking them can lead to being overweight and depression.
Rob Knight is a scientist at the University of California, San Diego. He suggests eating yogurt, because it is packed with healthy bacteria. Does that mean no French fries? “Having them sometimes is okay,” Knight says. “It’s the long-term habits that really matter. Being good to your microbiome over the next six months is a lot more important than what you ate yesterday, or what you eat tomorrow.”
4. In the memory test, some mice moved on because ______.
A. they are forgetful B. they eat a lot of food
C. they are not curious D. they eat low-fat food
5. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 means ______.

C. the stomach can keep one’s mind sharp D. the stomach can protect one from illness
6. Fatness and depression can be caused by ______.
A. microbiome B. bacteria
C too much salt and sugar D. yogurt
7. Which of the following is true about Robert Knight’s advice?
A. People must not eat French fries to protect their mircobiomes.
B. Eating yogurt for six month is good for body health.
C. It’s necessary to maintain long-term healthy eating habits.
D. What you eat tomorrow is the most important thing.

New research has found that a major Greenland glacier (冰川) that was once one of the fastest shrinking (缩小) glaciers on earth is now growing again.
Scientists from the American space agency NASA recently reported their findings about the Jakobshavn glacier. Because over the past 20 years, it has been the single largest source of mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet, researchers have been observing Jakobshavn for many years to help forecast world sea level rise.
NASA says that the water temperatures in areas around the glacier are currently colder than at any time since the mid-1980s. “At first we didn’t believe it,” said Ala Khazendar, a glacier scientist, helped lead the study. “We figured that the temperature would just keep going on as it had over the last 20 years.”
Jason Box is an ice and climate scientist. He told the Associated Press the new discovery about Jakobshavn was surprising because it had been moving in the other direction for so long. Box said, “The good news is that it’s a reminder that it’s not necessarily going that fast.” “But it is going,” he added.
A statement by NASA confirmed that, even with Jakobshavn’s new growth, it is still adding to global sea level rise. Scientists said this is because the glacier continues to lose more ice to the ocean than it gains from snowfall. The sea level rise is just happening at a slower rate.
Researchers involved in the study as well as other scientists believe Jakobshavn is experiencing only short-term changes. They mainly believe this because the cold water affecting the glacier was set in motion by a climate system called the North Atlantic Oscillation, which causes a natural temporary cooling and warming of different parts of the ocean.
The latest research clearly shows that Jakobshavn “is getting a temporary break” from a long-held climate pattern, where the world’s oceans are increasingly warming.
8. Why have scientists been observing Jakobshavn glacier during the past 20 years?
A. Because it is the only glacier in Greenland.
B. Because it is the single largest source of mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet.
C. Because the temperature of water around it is colder than that of other areas.
D. Because it makes sea levels around the world rise faster.
9. What does the discovery mean, according to Jason Box?
A. The global sea level is very likely to stop rising.
B. The shrinking of the glacier will slow down a bit.
C. The glacier loss will keep going at the same speed.
D. The change happening to this glacier will last for a long time.
10. Which of the following is NOT indicated in Paragraphs 5-6?
A. The glacier doesn’t gain as much ice as it has lost.
B. The temperature of the ocean is going down.
C. The situation regarding the world’s sea level is still not positive.
D. The growth of the glacier is due to a climate system.
11. What is this passage mainly about?
A. A glacier was found growing temporarily. B. The sea level is increasingly rising.
C. A new climate system was found. D. The world’s oceans are possibly getting cooler.

After completing my first year of studies, I spent two months travelling in Nepal. There were so many sights to see, foods to eat, and fun activities to try. I only experienced a few of them, but it was an incredible experience all the same.
The first thing I noticed about Nepal was its people. They are kind and friendly, ready to help someone in need. This may be a cliché (陈词滥调) that you hear from most travellers regarding the country they travelled to, but I’m saying so because of what I saw among the citizens themselves, rather than how they treated me as a visitor. Little things about how the local people interact with each other makes me believe that the Nepalese people are truly wonderful. It shows in the way that the bus drivers and passengers keep the bus waiting for the last passenger, or the motorist smiles and waves to a kid who runs into the street after his ball. The people are like a bowl of hot soup on a rainy day – always warm and comforting. Conversations were as natural as if we had known each other for years. All the people I met during my trip made me feel at home and made my journey an unforgettable one.
The Sauraha village was my first destination. It is an amazingly quiet and peaceful place, where the people lead their lives at their own pace. Although the temperature was high during the day, it was a great area to see some of the wildlife, such as the one-horned rhino (独角犀牛) and elephants. I also got to attend some cultural shows and experience some of the traditional dances of the Nepalese people.
Of all the places I went to within Nepal, Pokhara was undoubtedly the best place I visited. The environment is great there, and there are a lot of fun things to try out. I chose to go boating on a lake, but you can also go diving. Some of the nearby hills provide a great view of the sunrise early in the morning.
Nepal is beautiful in so many ways. Whether you are looking to relax in the wildness and quietness of nature, or go on an exciting adventure, Nepal offers a variety of options. It will surely impress you.
12. What does the author think of the Nepalese people?
A. They treat visitors and local people differently.
B. They show kindness and warmth even in little things.
C. They often provide others with a bowl of hot soup on rainy days.
D. It’s easy to talk to them if you have known them for a long time.
13. What does “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The temperature. B. The Sauraha people.
C. The Sauraha village. D. The wildlife.
14. What does the author like about Pokhara?
A. The peaceful lifestyle of the villagers. B. Experiencing a traditional Nepalese dance.
C. Wild animals such as the one-horned rhino. D. Seeing the sunrise from the top of a hill.
15. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. How to Interact with the Nepalese People. B. The Natural Environment of Nepal.
C. Useful Tips for Travelling to Nepal. D. Nepal: An Impressive and Attractive Country.

Following My Dream
I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters, my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but often told me “The dream is priceless.” However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular thing happened, which almost ruined (毁坏) my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in Senior Two and a friend recommended me for a summer job. I was offered $12.25 per hour. Compared with the average $3.5, that was a big sum. I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect (前景) of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule. I didn’t dare to tell my coach. I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, “If you make your bed, you have to lie in it.” I decided to talk to my coach by myself. After all, my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me. I gathered my courage and knocked at his door…

A. microbiome B. bacteria
C. too much salt and sugar D. yogurt

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. A

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Scientists from the American space agency NASA recently reported their findings about the Jakobshavn glacier. Because over the past 20 years, it has been the single largest source of mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet, researchers have been observing Jakobshavn for many years to help forecast world sea level rise.(美国国家航空航天局的科学家最近报告了他们对雅各布港冰川的发现。因为在过去的20年里,它一直是格陵兰冰盖损失的最大单一来源,研究人员多年来一直在观察雅各布港,以帮助预测世界海平面的上升)”可知,科学家们在过去的20年里一直在观察雅各布港冰川是由于因为它是格陵兰冰盖损失的最大单一来源。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“He told the Associated Press the new discovery about Jakobshavn was surprising because it had been moving in the other direction for so long. Box said, “The good news is that it’s a reminder that it’s not necessarily going that fast.” “But it is going,” he added.(他告诉美联社,关于雅各布冰川的新发现令人惊讶,因为它已经向另一个方向移动了这么长时间。Box说:“好消息是,这提醒了我们,事情并不一定发展得那么快。“但它正在发展,”他补充道。)”可知,根据Jason Box的观点,冰川上发生的变化正在发展,不一定很快,因此将持续很长一段时间。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“A statement by NASA confirmed that, even with Jakobshavn’s new growth, it is still adding to global sea level rise. Scientists said this is because the glacier continues to lose more ice to the ocean than it gains from snowfall. (美国国家航空航天局的一份声明证实,即使雅各布港出现了新的增长,它仍在加剧全球海平面上升。科学家表示,这是因为冰川向海洋流失的冰比从降雪中获得的冰还要多)”和第六段“They mainly believe this because the cold water affecting the glacier was set in motion by a climate system called the North Atlantic Oscillation, which causes a natural temporary cooling and warming of different parts of the ocean.(他们之所以这么认为,主要是因为影响冰川的冷水是由一种被称为北大西洋涛动的气候系统引起的,这种气候系统导致了海洋不同部分的暂时的自然冷却和变暖)”可知,冰川获得的冰没有失去的冰那么多,世界海平面的形势仍然不乐观,冰川的生长是由于气候系统造成的,没有提到海洋的温度正在下降。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“New research has found that a major Greenland glacier (冰川) that was once one of the fastest shrinking (缩小) glaciers on earth is now growing again.(新的研究发现,格陵兰岛的一个主要冰川曾经是地球上萎缩最快的冰川之一,现在又在增长)”及最后一段“The latest research clearly shows that Jakobshavn “is getting a temporary break” from a long-held climate pattern, where the world’s oceans are increasingly warming.(最新的研究清楚地表明,雅各布港正从长期存在的气候模式中“获得暂时的休息”,在这种气候模式中,世界海洋正在日益变暖)”及全文内容可知,本文介绍了格陵兰岛的一个主要冰川曾经是地球上萎缩最快的冰川之一,现在又在增长,这种现象只是暂时的,A选项“人们发现冰川暂时在生长”为本文主旨。故选A。
