A
You might know what to do if a human needs first aid, but what if your dog gets a bite or your cat eats something poisonous? Dr. Liam Donaldson, clinical director at Greencross Vet (兽医) Hospital at the University of Melbourne, says it’s important that pet owners understand basic first aid. Here, he shares his tips for dealing with common accidents and injuries.
Cuts & wounds
You don’t need to worry about disinfecting the injury site, but you do need to stop the bleeding, says Dr. Donaldson. “If there’s uncontrollable bleeding, apply pressure — even if it’s just using a T-shirt. Once you have applied pressure to reduce bleeding, take your pet immediately to a vet for assessment.” he advises.
Snake bites
Snakes have very small teeth, so their bite marks can be difficult to spot — and you might not see the bite happen. But if your pet shows signs of snake bite poisoning — sudden weakness and collapse, dilated pupils, vomiting, paralysis and shaking or twitching of muscles — get them to a vet without delay.
Tick bites
It’s a good idea to have a pair of tick-removal tweezers (镊子) on hand in case you need to remove a tick from your pet. “There’s often a lot of concern about whether you have to get all of the tick or not, but as long as you get the body of the tick off, generally the head will just remove itself over time,” says Dr. Donaldson. He recommends keeping the tick so that if your pet becomes ill, your vet can identify whether they were bitten by a paralysis tick (the type that can be deadly).
Poisoning
Cats eating ivy and dogs eating sago palm or macadamia nuts are some of the most common poisonings Dr. Donaldson sees. “If it’s a macadamia nut, I would just keep a very close eye on them. If they start to show any gastrointestinal signs — if they go off their food, if they become sore in any of their legs — get them checked over by a vet,” he says. “If it was lilies or sago palm, I would recommend getting them to a vet, even if they’re not showing signs of illness, just because that can typically be life-threatening.”
1. If your pet dog gets seriously injured, what is the best solution?
A. To seek medical assistance. B. To disinfect the injury site.
C. To apply pressure to reduce bleeding. D. To use a T-shirt to stop bleeding.
2. A cat or dog should be sent to hospital immediately it eats _________.
A. Ivy. B. Sago palm.
C A macadamia nut. D. A common poisoning.
3. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A medical journal. B. A biology textbook.
C. A hospital advertisement. D. An animal care guide.

At 1,345 meters above sea level, Ben Nevis is definitely not the world’s most difficult mountain to climb. But things get considerably tricky if instead of hiking shoes you put on a pair of 5-inch high heels, especially if you’re a guy. One English teenager recently proved that it was not impossible.
Ben Conway, a 19-year-old art student from London, recently took up the challenge as a way to stand out in an application for a scholarship for the School of Communication Arts in Brixton. He started his unusual high-heel climb at 8 a.m., on June 27, and was joined by Callum MacKenzie Allen, a friend from his art foundation year, who videotaped the whole thing for a two-minute video that served as his application project. The whole climb took five hours and wasn’t the smoothest experience.
Halfway up Ben Navis, one of his shoes broke, so he had to tape the shoes to his feet to make sure they stayed on. The weather didn’t make it easy for him either, as he claimed that it rained pretty much the whole time, and he had to go against 40 to 50 miles an hour winds. Due to these difficult conditions, Ben and his friend had to turn back after reaching 900 meters up the mountain.
Apart from providing a unique art school application project, the high-heel climb also allowed the 19-year-old to raise some money for worthy causes, like Sal’s Shoes, which provides footwear for barefoot children around the world.
“Raising money for charity brings happiness to people’s lives and if I can do something ridiculous and bring someone happiness, then that’s what it’s all about”, Ben said.
4. What can replace the underlined word “tricky” in Paragraph 1?
A. Pleasant. B. Boring. C. Tough. D. Smooth.
5. Why did Allen videotape the high-heel climb for Ben?
A. To prove nothing is impossible. B. To record a special experience.
C. To promote their friendship. D. To assist in Ben’s application.
6. What does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A. The difficulties in the climb. B. The climbing route.
C. The terrible weather. D. The unexpected incident.
7. What can best describe Ben’s story?
A. Puzzling. B. Inspiring. C. Exciting. D. Frightening.

An elderly black man sits on a drum with his legs on two sides. Using his fingers and the edge of his hand, he taps repeatedly at the drumhead, producing strong drumbeat. A second drummer joins in playing with the same rhythm. A third black man plays a stringed instrument, the body of which is roughly fashioned from a calabash (葫芦). Another calabash has been made into a drum, and a woman beats at it with two short sticks. One voice, then other voices join in. A dance accompanies this musical give-and-take, a moving picture that appears, on the one hand, informal and spontaneous yet, on closer inspection, ritualized (程式化的) and precise. It is a dance of massive size. A dense crowd of dark bodies forms into circular groups—perhaps five or six hundred individuals moving in time to the beat of the music, some swaying gently, others aggressively stomping their feet. A number of women in the group begin chanting.
The scene could be Africa. In fact, it is nineteenth-century New Orleans. Scattered firsthand accounts provide us with fascinating details of the slave dances that took place in the open area then known as Congo Square and there are perhaps no more fascinating documents in the history of African American music. Benjamin Latrobe, the noted architect, witnessed one of these collective dances on February 21,1819, and not only left us a vivid written account of the event but made several sketches of the instruments used. These drawings confirm that the musicians of Congo square, about 1891, were playing percussion (打击乐器) and stringed instruments almost identical to those characteristic of real African music.
Later documents add to our knowledge of the public slave dances in New Orleans but still leave us with many open questions — some of which, in time, historical research may be able to explain, while others might never be answered. One thing, however, is clear. Although these days we tend to view the intersection of black and white musical currents as a theoretical, almost symbolic issue, these storied accounts of the Congo Square dances provide us with a real time and place, an actual transfer of totally African ritual to the native soil of the New World.
8. Which of the following best describes the musical scene in the beginning?
A. It’s slow and relaxing. B. It’s lovely and childlike.
C. It’s strong and organized. D. It’s delightful and encouraging.
9. What’s the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To help its readers to read a music history book.
B. To show the value of the accounts in music history.
C. To familiarize its readers with a type of ancient music.
D. To praise an architect who was a dedicated music lover.
10. What’s the new understanding of the music?
A. It’s more of a musical theory. B. It’s more of a vivid life.
C. It’s more of a religious ceremony. D. It’s more of a cultural symbol.
11. What can we learn about Congo Square?
A. A place where foreigners held musical festivals.
B. A place where music historians wrote their books.
C. A place where slaves could have a break from hard labour.
D. A place where African music found its voice on the new land.
D
Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy Fair. Hidden among already popular toys were new, high-tech educational products. Toymakers are working to create these products for improving a child’s emotional intelligence.
Companies showed off their products last week at New York’s Jacob Javitz Convention Center.
PleIQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses visual reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things. Edison Duran directs the company that makes PleIQ. She showed people at the toy fair how virtual images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a tablet camera. PleIQ has children act as teacher or guide to a companion character.
On the other side of the convention center, Karen Hu from another company demonstrated an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch-screen face to get them started. Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism (自闭症). “The child can communicate with Woobo and follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him about certain things.”
At the EQtainment stand, sales director Jonathan Erickson explained the company’s toys. “The purpose of all of our products is to develop emotional and social intelligence.” he said. Erickson showed off a board game called “Q’s Race to the Top”. He said the game got his 4-year-old daughter to open up. “The biggest thing is her talking. And that’s the key of all this—getting her feelings expressed out. Like, ‘Hey, what does it feel like to be sad? Or how does it feel like to be happy?’”
It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded children.
12. How does PleIQ instruct children to learn?
A. By playing the role of a companion. B. By giving direct guidance.
C. By taking photos with a camera. D. By presenting visual images.
13. What can be inferred about Woobo from Paragraph 4?
A. It is programmed to replace teachers. B. It may be good company for kids.
C. It can get started automatically. D. It is intended to design games.
14 What does Jonathan Erickson think of his toys?
A. They are quite easy to operate. B. They can teach children numbers.
C. They help kids express themselves well. D. They can show their emotions clearly.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Toys are made to help to build emotional intelligence.
B. Educational toys sell well at the International Toy Fair.
C. Toymakers are making profits in education.
D. Children celebrate the International Toy Fair.

2. A cat or dog should be sent to hospital immediately it eats _________.
A. Ivy. B. Sago palm.
C. A macadamia nut. D. A common poisoning.

C 5. D 6. A 7. B

C 9. B 10. B 11.

14. What does Jonathan Erickson think of his toys?
A. They are quite easy to operate. B. They can teach children numbers.
C. They help kids express themselves well. D. They can show their emotions clearly.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Toys are made to help to build emotional intelligence.

故填that/which。
修饰动词短语were cut off应用副词completely。
主句主语为Fan and her coworkers,谓语动词为stayed和do,从句作do的宾语。从句they could(do)为避免重复省略了do,因此从句缺少宾语。 故填what/whatever。
the number of表示“……的数量”,首字母大写。故填The。
故填by。
故填and 。

1. proverb→proverbs;2. who→which;3. adapt→adapting;4. such→so;5.on→up;6.删除my;7. or→and;8. adjust→adjusted;9.在to后加a;10. definite→definitely。
固定句型:have difficulty (in) doing sth“做……有困难”,故将adapt改为adapting。
4.考查固定句型。句意:在第一个学期,我的学习成绩太差,以至于似乎不太可能赶上我的同学。poor为形容词,则此处为so…that…“如此……以至于……”引导的结果状语从句,其中so后面直接接形容词或副词,故将such改为so。
5.考查固定短语。句意:在第一个学期,我的学习成绩太差,以至于似乎不太可能赶上我的同学。固定短语:catch up with sb“赶上某人”,故将on 改为up。
“A little more effort”相当于祈使句的用法,这样做了,就会有“你就会成功的”结果,即“祈使句+and+简单句”,故将or改为and。

An act of love
Last Friday, our school hosted a charity sale, which was aimed at raising money for the stay-at-home children in remote mountainous areas.
As arranged, the charity sale started at 12:30 on the playground and lasted for nearly four hours, drawing a great number of teachers and students to participate. They were willing to contribute to the activity by either donating their personal stuff or buying something from the sale, a second-hand book, a newly-bought item or even a DIY product.
In my opinion, this charity sale was a great success. For one thing, with our joint efforts, we managed to raise a great amount of money to help those needy kids. For another, the enthusiasm and selflessness displayed by our fellow classmates will inspire more people to care and continue this act of love.
What a wonderful experience! More activities like this are expected.
