B Karla Torres, a recent graduate of Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School in Boyle Heights, designed and created an 18th-century-inspired dress with the support of her mom to enter the yearly “Stuck at Prom” scholarship contest, sponsored by a trademarked brand of duct tape The Los Angeles teen was named a finalist last week with the grand prize: a $ 10,000 scholarship. In the beginning, Karla often spent hours online looking for clothing ideas or different styles. But it wasn't until a recent visit to the J. Paul Getty Museum — the only field trip she took in high school — that she found her inspiration from the 18th-century French paintings, featuring impressive, grand dresses. “We’ve never made a dress, much less out of duct tape,” Karla said. “We didn’t know how much duct tape we needed. We were just doing it by trial and error.” In the end, the college-bound teen and her mom spent at least 120 hours, over many days, working on the dress, and used l4 rolls of tape. “Tape is so tough and you can’t move it easily,” Karla said. “It was really challenging to make it all come together.” But the fashion-forward teenager overcame that challenge. Of more than 200 entries to the contest, Karla’s work was selected among the top five, judged for color, quality, originality, and the use of the brand tape. While it’s Karla’s name officially in the contest, this whole process was more of a collective effort by her family. “It means a lot to me. The $ 10,000 prize would go a long way as I plan to attend a California State University school in August. I wouldn’t want my parents to struggle trying to find a way to pay for it,” Karla said. “It would really help my parents.” 4. What inspired Karla to create the dress? A. Social media. B. The encouragement of her mom. C. Her visit to a museum. D. The impact of other competitors. 5. How did Karla’s work stand out among the other entries in the contest? A. It showed great skills and originality. B. It copied the style of modern paintings. C. It reflected a variety of fashionable ideas. D. It used expensive and high-quality materials. 6. Why is winning the contest important for Karla? A. It’s a recognition of her mom’s efforts. B. It allows her to find a job in the fashion industry. C. It ensures her admission into the California college. D. It saves her parents from struggling to pay for her college. 7. Which of the following can best describe Karla? A. Creative and considerate. B. Humorous and hardworking. C. Responsible and brave. D. Kind and generous. C In a new study, researchers found a link between outdoor education and science grades. The findings indicate outdoor education could be a promising tool to help close gender (性别) gaps in science. “The outdoors is a space where teachers can find tangible ways to make science come alive,” says lead author Kathryn Stevenson, assistant professor of parks, recreation, and tourism management at North Carolina State University. “The natural environment is also a place that everybody has in common. In a way, it’s also a great context for employing teaching practices like hands-on, inquiry-based learning or group work. These practices can be good for all students, but they may be particularly good for reaching students who aren’t as well-served in classroom settings,” Stevenson says. The researchers studied the impact of an outdoor science education program called Muddy Sneakers on fifth graders’ science grades and knowledge of, and attitude about, science. Fifth graders from western North Carolina attended between 6 and 10 days of Muddy Sneakers. They had science lessons in nearby natural areas, including state parks and school grounds, Outdoor lessons followed the standard course of study for science through hands-on activities, hikes, nature exploration, and reflections. Researchers compared the performance of 237 students who learned about science in the classroom to 403 students who participated in the outdoor program. When researchers evaluated (评估) students’ science grades by gender, they saw that girls who participated in the outdoor science program maintained their science grades on average (平均), while girls’ average grades in the traditional science classes dropped. They also saw that participation in average grades in the traditional science classes dropped. They also saw that participation in the outdoor program helped girls learn more about how science works on average, but traditional classrooms did not. Boys in the outdoor and traditional class settings had fairly stable science grades on average and saw similar gains in knowledge of how science works. “Outdoor education seems to be one of those contexts that helps everyone learn, but it may be really, really helpful for some students in particular,” Stevenson says. 8. What does the underlined word “tangible” in paragraph l mean? A. Practical. B. Ineffective. C. Challenging. D. Unfair. 9. What is the purpose of the study? A. To improve fifth graders’ science grades. B To provide part-time jobs for the students. C To learn the effect of outdoor education on students. D. To earn some money from different kinds of courses. 10. How do the researchers reach the findings? A. By listing numbers. B. By interviewing students. C. By explaining the causes. D. By making a comparison. 11. What is Stevenson’s attitude towards outdoor education? A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Unclear. D. Objective. D With mounting evidence that nanoplastic particles (纳米塑料微粒) are in our bodies, there is growing concern over their potential health impacts. Now a new study finds a relation between nanoplastics in the brain and a higher risk for Parkinson’s disease. Nanoplastics appear when the plastic packaging breaks down into small pieces. These particles can enter the blood and cross the blood-brain barrier, with European researchers reporting earlier this year that in animal experiments, it can take two hours or less for certain nanoplastics to reach the brain after being eaten. In humans, it’s long been thought that environmental factors play a role in Parkinson’s disease but specific causes are still unclear. The new study from the Duke University School of Medicine details how nanoplastics cause chemical changes in the brain that can, in turn, make Parkinson’s and related types of diseases more likely. That’s because the nanoplastics attract a protein (蛋白质) called alpha-synuclein, known to play a role in Parkinson’s and related disorders. In lab and animal studies, the plastic’s interaction with it leads to increases in the affected neurons in the brain. This interaction appears related to favorable conditions in which Parkinson’s can develop. The study authors note that Parkinson’s disease existed long before nanoplastics appeared in the environment, but they think that this “nanoplastics pollution in the human brain” may prove a new poison. Further, the Duke team led by Dr. Andrew West notes that Parkinson’s disease is among the fastest growing nervous diseases in the world, even as the amazing amount of plastic pollution builds across the planet. This is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. “The technology to monitor nanoplastics is still at the earliest possible stages and not ready yet to answer all the questions we have,” West said. “But hopefully efforts in this area will increase rapidly, as we see what these particles can do in our experiments.” 12. Where is the text most probably taken from? A. A product advertisement. B. A science journal. C. An art magazine. D. A travel brochure. 13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The conditions leading to Parkinson’s. B. The cause of alpha-synuclein’s appearance. C. The principle of nanoplastics’ impact on Parkinson’s. D. The difference between Parkinson’s and related disorders. 14. What can be inferred from West’s words in the last paragraph? A. Plastic pollution will by no means be avoided. B. Nanoplastics are impossible to deal with at present. C. Fewer people will suffer from Parkinson’s in the future. D. More efforts in the study of nanoplastics will be put in. 15. What is a suitable title for the text? A. Nanoplastics can enter the brain through blood B. Nanoplastics may promote Parkinson’s disease C. Alpha-synuclein plays a role in Parkinson’s disease D. Nanoplastics will do serious harm to human health How to gain happiness? Although the company is a little far from my home, I have my own car. So I drive myself to and from work every day. Tom is my good workmate. Sometimes we work overtime in the company and get off work together. He often goes home by bus. One day, it was cold outside. It seemed that the snowstorm would be approaching. As usual, Tom and I worked overtime in the company. After finishing the work, we were ready to go home together. Tom went to wait for the bus, and I went to drive. But it snowed harder and harder, and the bus stopped. So I was going to give Tom a ride. I was heading home after giving Tom a ride, and I took a shortcut to get home early as the snowstorm was approaching. Then the snowstorm started and was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a white out. The windows were frozen and getting covered with snow, so I slowed down and rolled down my driver’s side window, thinking I could better follow the road edge and keep to straight line. But really, I had no idea where I was. I was confused and didn’t know what to do. At that time, I stopped and kept the car running to stay warm. I took a deep breath and was deep in thought. Later I called 911 and asked them for help. However, the operator told me that the weather was too bad to do me a favor and asked me to wait things out for the night. The call made me feel afraid. Tom knew what happened to me. Suddenly, an idea occurred to him. “Maybe you could ask for help online and there must be some people living nearby your location and they can show you the right direction,” he told me on the phone. I posted my location online and explained what I was searching for. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Then I saw a person wearing a long black coat in the dark. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 南阳地区2024年春季高一年级阶段检测考试卷 英语 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? The Los Angeles teen was named a finalist last week with the grand prize: a $ 10,000 scholarship. “It would really help my parents.” 4 What inspired Karla to create the dress? A. Social media. B. To provide part-time jobs for the students. C. To learn the effect of outdoor education on students. D. To earn some money from different kinds of courses. 10. How do the researchers reach the findings? A. By listing numbers. B. By interviewing students. C. By explaining the causes. D. By making a comparison. 11. What is Stevenson’s attitude towards outdoor education? A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Unclear. D. Objective. 8. A 9. C 10. D 11. Nanoplastics will do serious harm to human health 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I posted my location online and explained what I was searching for. Within minutes, responses started flooding in. People were offering directions, sharing their own experiences of being lost in snowstorms, and even volunteering to come out and help. One message stood out—a neighbor from the nearby town said he would try to reach me with his snowmobile. Hope surged through me as I read his message. Maybe I wasn’t going to spend the night trapped in my car after all. Then I saw a person wearing a long black coat in the dark. As he approached, I realized it was the neighbor who had messaged me. Relief washed over me as he waved and shouted through the snow. He helped me dig out my car and guided me safely back to the main road. Grateful doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt. That night, the kindness of a stranger and the power of community saved me from a potentially dangerous situation. It just goes to show, even in the midst of a snowstorm, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. 3. 词汇激活 行为类 ①提供:offer/provide ②意识到:realize/recognize ③表明:show/display 情绪类 ①轻松:relief/relaxation ②感激:grateful/appreciative 【点睛】[高分句型1]One message stood out—a neighbor from the nearby town said he would try to reach me with his snowmobile.(省略that引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2]Relief washed over me as he waved and shouted through the snow.(as引导的时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
