Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every big dog in California. Men had found gold in Yukon, and these men wanted big strong dogs to work in the cold and snow of the north.
Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara Valley. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs and farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was the chief dog. He was born here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons, and walking with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter.
But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miller’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.
Buck growled, and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.
When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.
That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Francisco. The barman looked at the man’s hand and trousers covered in blood.
“How much are they paying you for this?” he asked.
“I only get fifty dollars.”
“And the man who stole him-how much did he get?” asked the barman.
“A hundred. He wouldn’t take less.”
“That makes a hundred and fifty. It’s a good price for a dog like him. Here, help me to get him into this.”
They took off Buck’s rope and pushed him into a wooden box. He spent the night in the box in the back room of the bar. His neck still ached with pain from the rope, and he could not understand what it all meant. What did they want with him, these strange men? And where was Mr Miller?
The next day Buck was carried in the box to the railway station and put on a train to the north.

After 10 years of difficult talks, nearly 200 countries agreed to a new United Nations (UN) agreement to protect the world’s oceans. The agreement has been the first of its kind in 40 years. It plans to protect 30% of the open oceans by 2030.
Oceans cover about 71% of the Earth’s surface and are home to hundreds of thousands of different kinds of animals and plants. Healthy oceans are a very important part of a healthy planet. But the oceans are in trouble. Overfishing(捕捞过度)has had a terrible effect on many kinds of fish and other animals. Pollution from ships and other places has caused serious problems. In 1982, an agreement described the “ high seas (公海)”, but it did not protect them. In these areas, all countries have the right to fish, send ships, and do research. The high seas cover about two-thirds of the ocean. But now people only protect 1.2% of the areas.
Last December, over 110 countries agreed to protect 30% of their land and ocean areas by 2030. Without an international agreement, there was no way to make this goal meaningful for the whole ocean. The new agreement now makes this feasible.
The new agreement tries to turn 30% of the high seas into protected areas by 2030. It also says that activities planned for the high seas must first be examined to see what kind of influences they might have on the ocean environment. Businesses in some countries hope to make a lot of money by getting valuable things from the bottom of the sea. Other businesses hope to find plants or animals in the ocean that could lead to new discoveries and new medicines.
Many of the disagreements were about how valuable things would be shared between rich countries and poor ones. Poor countries wanted to make sure that the valuable things would help everyone, not just people in rich countries.
24. How many countries agreed to a new agreement to protect the world’s oceans?
A. Nearly 20 countries. B. Very few countries.
C. Most countries in the world. D. Just a few countries.
25. What does Paragraph 2 mainly show us?
A. The problems oceans face. B. Some ways to protect oceans.
C. Different kinds of ocean creatures. D. People’s different ideas about oceans.
26. What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Awful. B. Painful. C. Possible. D. Dangerous.
27. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. The importance of healthy oceans.
B. Overfishing and pollution in the oceans.
C. A new agreement to protect the open oceans.
D. Disagreements between rich and poor countries.

According to the country’s space experts, China is developing a new carrier rocket and manned spacecraft now.
The new carrier rocket is called Long March-10. It is mainly developed to achieve the goal to land astronauts on the moon by 2030, said Rong Yi, a rocket expert.
The Long March-10 uses liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen and kerosene(煤油)as propellants(推进剂). It has a total length of about 92 meters, a takeoff weight of about 2,187 tonnes(公吨), a takeoff thrust (of about 2,678 tonnes, and a carrying capacity of no less than27 tonnes for the Earth-moon transfer orbit(转换轨道).
The Long March-10 is expected to prepare for its first flight in 2027, said Rong in a recent interview. Of course, the new rocket can also send astronauts and cargo(货物)to the space station.
The new manned spacecraft is also a support for China to land astronauts on the moon by 2030. It can meet the needs of near-Earth and deep space missions(任务).
According to an expert, the spacecraft can carry three astronauts. It is mainly used to send astronauts to orbit around the moon and return to Earth.
Unlike the three-module Shenzhou spacecraft, the new spacecraft has two parts. One is the return capsule(舱), which is the command center of the Whole spacecraft and the living quarters for the astronauts. The other is the service module, which is the energy and power center. The structure makes the spaceship have more reusable parts.
28. What’s the purpose of developing the new carrier rocket?
A. To explore the Mars. B. To prepare for moon landing.
C. To finish a secret space mission. D. To send cargo to the space station.
29. How much does the new rocket weigh when it begins to take off?

五、阅读表达(共5小题,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,回答短文后面的各个小题。
Here are some tips about how to have a great relationship with your parents.
◆Respect each other.
Without respect, any relationship will be an unhappy one. People who respect each other value each other's opinions, listen to each other, disagree without screaming(尖叫)or insults (辱骂).And remember your parents have lived longer than you-don't discount(低估) their experience and knowledge.
◆Communicate.
Your parents want to know what’s going on in your life. If you keep them in the dark, they won’t know when you need their help or whether they can trust you. Tell them what you’re up to, share your thoughts and feelings with them, and seek their advice for your problems.
◆Build trust.
Trust is your key to freedom. The way to build trust is through honesty. Honesty means you don’t lie. When your parents trust you, it’s a lot easier for them to say “yes”.
However, these guidelines don’t always work. Since we can only control what we do, and not what our parents do, sometimes we are truly helpless to change a bad relationship. If this is the case, try to use these guidelines to at least improve things a little, and talk with a trusted adult who may be able to help you.
51. How many tips are mentioned to have a great relationship with parents?
52. What does any happy relationship depend on first?
53. In what ways can we communicate with parents better?(One is OK)
54. How to build trust according to the writer?
55. What other tips can you give to have a better relationship with your parents?

Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every
big dog in California. Men had found gold in Yukon, and these men wanted big strong dogs to
work in the cold and snow of the north.
Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara Valley. There were large
gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this,
of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs and farm dogs, but they were not
important. Buck was the chief dog. He was born here, and this was his place. He was four
years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons, and walking
with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in
front of the fire in winter.
But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to
north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miller’s
gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and
Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go,
and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave
him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.
Buck growled, and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He

jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue
out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men
to put him into the train.
When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him,
but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled
again and Buck had to let go.
That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Francisco. The
barman looked at the man’s hand and trousers covered in blood.
“How much are they paying you for this?” he asked.
“I only get fifty dollars.”
“And the man who stole him-how much did he get?” asked the barman.
“A hundred. He wouldn’t take less.”
“That makes a hundred and fifty. It’s a good price for a dog like him. Here, help me to
get him into this.”
They took off Buck’s rope and pushed him into a wooden box. He spent the night in the
box in the back room of the bar. His neck still ached with pain from the rope, and he could not
understand what it all meant. What did they want with him, these strange men? And where
was Mr Miller?
The next day Buck was carried in the box to the railway station and put on a train to the
north.

After 10 years of difficult talks, nearly 200 countries agreed to a new United Nations
(UN) agreement to protect the world’s oceans. The agreement has been the first of its kind in
40 years. It plans to protect 30% of the open oceans by 2030.
九年级英语试题 第 5 页 共 8页
Oceans cover about 71% of the Earth’s surface and are home to hundreds of thousands of
different kinds of animals and plants. Healthy oceans are a very important part of a healthy
planet. But the oceans are in trouble. Overfishing(捕捞过度)has had a terrible effect on many
kinds of fish and other animals. Pollution from ships and other places has caused serious
problems. In 1982, an agreement described the “ high seas (公海)”, but it did not protect them.
In these areas, all countries have the right to fish, send ships, and do research. The high seas
cover about two-thirds of the ocean. But now people only protect 1.2% of the areas.
Last December, over 110 countries agreed to protect 30% of their land and ocean areas
by 2030. Without an international agreement, there was no way to make this goal meaningful
for the whole ocean. The new agreement now makes this feasible.
The new agreement tries to turn 30% of the high seas into protected areas by 2030. It
also says that activities planned for the high seas must first be examined to see what kind of
influences they might have on the ocean environment. Businesses in some countries hope to
make a lot of money by getting valuable things from the bottom of the sea. Other businesses
hope to find plants or animals in the ocean that could lead to new discoveries and new
medicines.
Many of the disagreements were about how valuable things would be shared between rich
countries and poor ones. Poor countries wanted to make sure that the valuable things would
help everyone, not just people in rich countries.

According to the country’s space experts, China is developing a new carrier rocket
and manned spacecraft now.
The new carrier rocket is called Long March-10. It is mainly developed to achieve
the goal to land astronauts on the moon by 2030, said Rong Yi, a rocket expert.
The Long March-10 uses liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen and kerosene(煤油)as
propellants(推进剂). It has a total length of about 92 meters, a takeoff weight of about
2,187 tonnes(公吨), a takeoff thrust (of about 2,678 tonnes, and a carrying capacity of no

is the return capsule(舱), which is the command center of the Whole spacecraft and the
living quarters for the astronauts. The other is the service module, which is the energy and
power center. The structure makes the spaceship have more reusable parts.
28. What’s the purpose of developing the new carrier rocket?
A. To explore the Mars. B. To prepare for moon landing.
C. To finish a secret space mission. D. To send cargo to the space station.

Here are some tips about how to have a great relationship with your parents.
◆Respect each other.
Without respect, any relationship will be an unhappy one. People who respect each other
value each other's opinions, listen to each other, disagree without screaming(尖叫)or insults
(辱骂 ).And remember your parents have lived longer than you-don't discount(低估 ) their
experience and knowledge.
◆Communicate.
Your parents want to know what’s going on in your life. If you keep them in the dark, they
won’t know when you need their help or whether they can trust you. Tell them what you’re up
to, share your thoughts and feelings with them, and seek their advice for your problems.
◆Build trust.
Trust is your key to freedom. The way to build trust is through honesty. Honesty means
you don’t lie. When your parents trust you, it’s a lot easier for them to say “yes”.
However, these guidelines don’t always work. Since we can only control what we do, and
not what our parents do, sometimes we are truly helpless to change a bad relationship. If this
is the case, try to use these guidelines to at least improve things a little, and talk with a trusted
adult who may be able to help you.
51. How many tips are mentioned to have a great relationship with parents?
52. What does any happy relationship depend on first?
53. In what ways can we communicate with parents better?(One is OK)
54. How to build trust according to the writer?
55. What other tips can you give to have a better relationship with your parents?
