From“Law and Order'”to“Crime Scene Investigation”,not to mention real
life, investigators have used fingerprints as the gold standard for linking criminals to
a crime. But if a criminal suspect leaves prints from different fingers in two different
crime scenes, these scenes are very difficult to link, and the trace can go cold.
It's a well-accepted fact in the forensics(法医学)community that
fingerprints of different fingers of the same person are unique, and therefore
unmatchable.
A team led by Columbia Engineering undergraduate senior Gabe Guo
challenged this widely held presumption ()Guo,who had no related
forensics knowledge, found a public US government database of some 60,000
fingerprints and fed them in pairs into an artificial intelligence-based system.
Sometimes the pairs belonged to the same person but different fingers),and
sometimes they belonged to different people.
Over time, the Al system got better at telling when seemingly unique
fingerprints belonged to the same person and when they didn't.The accuracy for a
single pair reached 77%.Then the team sent the findings to a forensics journal,
only to receive a rejection. The editor concluded that "It is well known that every
fingerprint is unique, and therefore it would not be possible to detect similarities
even if the fingerprints came from the same person.
The team fed their Al system even more data, and kept improving the
system. But when they submitted the paper,it was rejected again. This time,
Lipson,a professor and co-director of the Makerspace Facility, appealed."I
don't normally argue editorial decisions, but this information would tip the
balance. If that happens,I imagine that cold cases could be looked into again
and many innocent people would be set free.Later, this paper was published.
This discovery is an example of more surprising things to come from Al,
notes Lipson."Many people think that AI cannot really make new discoveries,
he said."But this research is an example of how even a fairly simple Al,given a
fairly plain dataset that the research community has had lying around for years,

At ancient sites across the Amazon River basin, mysterious plots of
unusually rich soil dot (the landscape.Scientists have long debated the
origin of this "dark earth",which is darker in color than surrounding soils and
richer in carbon. Some people think this dark earth formed naturally, but the
latest research has shown that modern Kuikuro people in Brazil create similar soil
around their villages on purpose, which adds evidence to the idea that long-ago
Amazons deliberately made such soil too.Perron,an earth scientist at MIT,
reviewed interviews of Kuikuro people conducted by a Kuikuro filmmaker in 2018
and found that Kuikuro villagers actively make dark earth by using ash, food bits
and controlled burns."When you plant in hilly land, the soil is weak,"
explained elder Kanu Kuikuro in one of the interviews. That is why we throw the
ash, manioc peelings and manioc pulp. When comparing soil samples from
ancient and modern sites,researchers found"striking similarities"-both were
far less acidic than surrounding soils and contained higher levels of plant-friendly
nutrients.
Analyses also revealed that dark earth holds twice the amount of carbon as
surrounding soils on average.Scans (of the Xingu region suggest that the
area is dotted with dark earth, and that holds as much as about 9 million tons of
carbon-the annual carbon emissions of a small,industrialized country."This
number could roughly equal the annual carbon emissions of the United States
when all dark earth across the Amazon is taken into consideration,Perron says.
Figuring out the true value of carbon stored in the Amazon's dark earth will
require more data.Still, the research has significant influences on the Amazon's
future. The technique highlights how ancient people were able to live in the
Amazon by developing sustainable farming that doubled as a carbon-storing
technique. With more and more greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere,it
could also provide a blueprint for developing methods of sustainably locking
atmospheric carbon in the soil, helping fight climate change.
32.What can we infer from the dark earth across the Amazon River basin?
A.They are more acidic than surrounding soils.
B.They contain more organic nutrients.
C.They formed naturally.
D.They contain less carbon.

Sometimes the juggle(尽力应付)is real.No matter how hard we try to
achieve balance,it's all too easy to overload ourselves with to-do lists, tasks and
even the“titles”we give ourselves.36
Talk to someone.Don't go it alone.Forget trying to achieve the unachievable
without any help.Anxiety, depression and major stress are no joke.37 So
before things get too serious,it is important to talk to someone-whether a
friend,a family member or indeed a professional.
Give yourself a break.38 But,I also mean mentally.Beating yourself
up for not having achieved something is useless. It causes stressful thoughts and
situations, and the task at hand just won't get done.So use some meditation
techniques to return to an even breath when you think about the to-do list
items you have not yet checked off.
Sleep it off.Make sure you are getting enough sleep. As a new mom,I have
found the days when I get completely at a loss are the days following the nights
when my son hasn't slept well.39 So just make a few minutes to sleep and
everything will fall into place more quickly once you've had 40 winks ()
40 We focus on the things we "should"do.However,we ignore our
successes.By success I don't mean climbing Mount Everest.I mean the micro-
wins we all achieve on a daily basis.Let's enjoy life along the way and focus on
things like making someone smile or taking more time to work out today.
A.Recognize the small wins.
B.They can really impact you and your family.
C.By break, yes I do mean taking a long hot bath.
D.Then is there any solution to shortening the list?
E.Sleep is one of the best medicines for a tired mind.
F.Preventing one from sleeping is a punishment by enemies.
G.So how can we avoid constantly stressing about "the juggle"?
