At the beginning of the new millennium(千年), technology companies created a number of products that changed the world. They changed the lives of adults and children. Young people had been watching television since the 1950s, but the new technology was more portable(便携的)and personalized. However, the companies that made these products had done little research on the influence on mental health. Some social media companies do great harm to girls, and video game companies mainly influenced boys. By designing addictive products that entered children's lives through their eyes and ears, these companies replaced physical play and face-to-face communication, changing children's lives forever.
The generation born after 1995, known as Gen Z, became the first generation to grow up with a device in their pocket. It pulled them away from the people around them and into an exciting, addictive, but unstable world. To succeed socially in this world, Gen Z teenagers spend a lot of time managing their online presence, posting photos and videos of their lives. They spend many hours each day scrolling through the shiny happy posts of friends, acquaintances and strangers. They also watch an increasing amount (数量)of user-generated videos and streamed entertainment.
A big reason for the change was boys playing online multiplayer games in the late 2000s and using smartphones in the early 2010s. These activities pulled them away from face-to-face communication. From the early 2010s, boys in many Western countries began to show signs of poorer mental health. By 2015, many of these boys said that they had no close friends. They felt lonely, and thought that there was no meaning or direction in their lives.
However, we are not helpless to change this situation. It might feel like we can't do anything because smartphones, social media and social influence trap us in a collective action problem. When boys start secondary school, they face this problem. On their first day, they see some of their classmates with smartphones and are connecting on Instagram and Snapchat, even during class time. That puts pressure on them to get a smartphone and social media as well.

What's really green?
Most of us realize that we must take care of the environment, and most of us take steps to save energy and reduce waste and pollution. But recently, some “green truths” have been shown to be only half true, or even completely false. Here are some common ones. Which are really green?
? Paper shopping bags are better than plastic ones.
Plastic bags cause litter and are a danger to wild animals, which mistake them for food. It takes hundreds of years for plastic to break down, but much less time for paper. Because of this, people think paper bags are the better environmental choice. However, making a paper bag uses four times as much energy as making a plastic bag. The process also produces more greenhouse gases.
In fact, both kinds of bags are bad for the environment. So, take are usable bag with you when you go shopping.
? When you turn off a device(电器), it stops using power.
When we turn off a device, such as television, it goes into stand-by mode. Devices in this mode still use power. This happens because electricity continues to leak(漏)from the device, even when it is turned “off”. To make sure your device is in fact off, remove the plug from its power supply.
? Eating local food is good for the environment.
It seems like common sense: eating local food should be better for the environment, because it does not need to be transported long distances and kept cold during transport. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. The production of food uses most of the energy and produces most of the greenhouse gases. In some cases, local produce might have used more energy and produced more greenhouse gases than produce grown a long way away.
It's better to take a shower than a bath.
It depends on how long you spend in the shower and how large your bath is. If you spend more than eight minutes in a shower, you'll use as much water as in a bath-about 50 liters of water. Therefore, the key is to keep your shower time as short as possible.
Environmental awareness is now part of daily life. But it's worth checking common ideas and opinions to see what's really green.
