Small Talk, Large Effect
Have you ever found yourself waiting at the stop for your bus to arrive and have a stranger ask an ordinary question? Perhaps you've stood in line waiting for a coffee and feel the need to just look over to the person next to you and ask about the weather.
(This is small talk, and despite the name) it's actually a big part of daily life.
“Small talk may seem trivial (微不足道的), but it's a natural way for people to connect. It may seem like a waste of time. But it serves an important role in our social interactions (交往). Big relationships are built on small talk,” Lindy Pegler, who has a master's degree in psychology, wrote on Medium.
In fact, we spend a lot of our time making small talk. Often, we find ourselves making small talk with the same people on a regular basis. Coming up with small conversations is the foundation (基础) of these relationships.
The benefits of such conversations can actually contribute to our happiness and benefit our lives as a whole. Un a recent study, researchers found that having a healthy amount of acquaintances ( 相识的人) and keeping these relationships contribute to one's sense of belonging to a community.
So how does one start making small talk? It can be as simple as admiring one's shirt, asking about their day or commenting on the traffic. “First and foremost, small talk is an act of politeness,” Pegler noted. “Our small talk at our first meeting is our chance to show who we are,” she added.
Who knows where this can lead? Nowadays, the small connections we make can lead to big results. You might find someone who has a common interest, or maybe even someone who turns out to be a close friend.
There is one thing for sure:(Making small talk can brighten our day, even if it's just a nice comment or a thoughtful question ) So the next time you find yourself waiting for the bus or checking your watch while you wait in a line, take the opportunity to look up and talk to someone around you. After all, it takes a small connection to lead to a larger one.
34. What is actually a big part of daily life?
35. What did the researchers find in a recent study?
36. According to Pegler, why do we make small talk?
37. Would you like to try to make small talk in your daily life? Why or why not?
(Give two reasons.)

How to Be Successful in a New Environment?
Perhaps, you are a smart person with good knowledge and creative ideas, but when you move to a new environment or have to work with some new people, it is not always easy for them to recognise you or respect you immediately. How can you get along with others? How can you get other people to pay attention to you and respect you?
Be curious and be willing to learn new things, knowledge and skills. Moving to a new working environment, you may need to deal with things that don’t belong to your own field. In such a case, people who are more willing to learn new things can become more flexible (灵活的) and be able to meet new requirements in their job.
Have a good sense of judgement on important aspects. Learning or working in a new environment, you need to have a good sense of judgement when joining a discussion or making a decision. You should consider what is virtually right, and look for long-term goals, and not be distracted (使分心) by small choices for the short term.
Be confident and make eye contact when talking to people. When you go out and meet people, it is important to look confident. For example, if you are going to an interview, but you don’t feel confident, what can you do? Before you walk in, think to yourself, “I own the room.” Then, walk in holding your head high and smile. Remember to look other people in the eye — it’s the key to creating a connection with people. Soon, you will feel as confident as you look.
Set clear goals and learn. When working together with others, it is important that you have a clear vision and a working plan to achieve it. Let people know what you stand for. You need to find out which ideas can really unite people and then express those ideas clearly. Also, treat your team members respectfully as equals.
Be helpful to others. When working, don’t focus on what is your work and what isn’t. After doing your own work, always be ready to help others.
34.What kind of people can become more flexible in their job?
35.When do you need to have a good sense of judgement according to the passage?
36.What is important for you when you go out and meet people according to the passage?
37.Would you like to follow the suggestions above? Why or why not?

The Sport of Concentration
Every day, it seems, a new gadget (设备) promises to help me increase the distance and pace I run, or the number of hours I sleep, or the rate of my heartbeats. It will make me a “better me,” or so the story goes.
Maybe some of them actually help to do these things, but nonetheless, I still decided to sell all of my sports gadgets a few months ago and simply record my running times with a pen and a notepad. Soon after, I began to train for a marathon the old-fashioned way, without something on my wrist telling me my pace and current heart rate. As it turned out, running without knowing all that information was a great pleasure.
In the past, whenever I was running slower than my smartwatch said I should be, I’d force myself to speed up, even if it was clear that my body didn’t want to. But this time, I ran the way I wanted to.
On more than a few occasions, when I’d look at my notepad following key workouts (锻炼), I was shocked to see that I’d had some real breakthroughs (突破), running much faster than I thought I could. I was so shocked about these numbers and thought that if I’d seen them during the workout itself, I would have probably slowed down. Yet, because I was blind to them, I just kept on running.
Another positive thing about getting rid of all my running gadgets is that it’s helping me concentrate (集中注意力) more on the running itself. Since I no longer feel like I need technology to run well, I can go out and run without worrying about whether everything has enough battery power.
So, what’s the lesson here? Well, we could very easily replace the example of running with writing, studying, or anything else. No matter what it is the more time we spend worrying about how to make ourselves better at something, the more our performance is affected.
Should you stop using technology to “improve” your performance? Of course, that’s up to you. However, if I were to be asked that question, I’d certainly say that I’m better off without it.
34.When did the writer decide to sell all of the sports gadgets?
35.Why was the writer shocked?
36.What’s another positive thing without any running gadgets?
37.What does the writer learn from the example of running?
38.What do you think of sports gadgets? Why do you think so?
