Thanksgiving is one of the most important traditional festivals in the United States. When it comes to Thanksgiving dinner, people think of golden roast(烤) turkey and pumpkin pie. Pumpkin pie is not only one of the traditional desserts in America, but also a necessary food for Thanksgiving. Why do Americans eat pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving? Is it just because the golden pumpkins in autumn symbolize the harvest season? In fact, pumpkin pie became Thanksgiving staple(主食), which had a lot to do with a woman writer.
Pumpkin pie might be served at the 1621 harvest festival(now known as Thanksgiving). It is said that the earliest recipes(食谱) for pumpkin pie actually came from 17th-century Europe. By the 18th century, however, Europeans lost interest in pumpkin pie because they began to prefer apple pie and pear pie. But at the same time pumpkin pie was losing favor in Europe, it was gaining true staple status(地位) in America.
But how did pumpkin pie relate to Thanksgiving? It had something to do with Sarah Josepha Hale. Born in New Hampshire, she was not only a writer but also an expert in cooking. She was also called the “Godmother of Thanksgiving.” In her novel Northwood, Hale described a Thanksgiving meal complete with fried chicken, broiled ham, wheat bread and pumpkin pie. For more than 30 years, Hale advocated for Thanksgiving to become a national holiday, writing to five American presidents. She believed that Thanksgiving was thankful to the creator and a symbol of national unity.
Finally, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln announced the fourth Thursday in November of each year as Thanksgiving and was designated(指定) as a national holiday. Then, celebrating Thanksgiving became a custom every year. Until now, pumpkin pie has been the most popular holiday pie in most parts of the United States, although apple pie is popular in some states.

The brush pen, one of the “Four Treasures of the Study”, was invented thousands of years ago. However, the oldest pen was just a stick or a piece of bamboo. It was difficult for people to write well on thin silk.
It is said that Meng Tian, a general of the Kingdom Qin, improved the pen. When Meng was leading an army to fight against the Kingdom of Chu, he had to report the situation to his king in time. But his pen was too hard and caused him much trouble, so he was thinking of ways to improve it.
One day after hunting, Meng made his way home with some wild rabbits on the horse back. Fat and heavy, one rabbit’s tail left a long trail(痕迹) on the ground when they moved on. Suddenly a good idea came to his mind when he saw it, “If I tie the rabbit’s hair to a stick, would it be easy to write with?”
On arriving home, he tied the rabbit’s hair to a stick and tried writing with it. But the rabbit’s hair was too smooth to write well and wasted a lot of silk. Meng was so disappointed that he threw away his “invention” into a stone hole in the yard.
However, Meng never gave up and kept trying all the time. A few rainy days later, he happened to find his “invention” fatter in a stone hole. He picked it up with hope. The brush worked beautifully on silk. It turned out that the special water had cleaned the oil from the hair. Meng succeeded at last.
Thanks to Meng, the brush pen is playing a key role in Chinese culture. Today, students are taught to use the brush pens in school. It makes their life more colorful and helps them better understand Chinese culture.

It is well known that crayons are the ideal tool for children to learn color painting. The invention of crayons encourages children’s imagination and creativity and made their childhood colorful.
In 1885, Mr. Edwin Binney and Mr. C. Harold Smith set up Binney & Smith Company in New York. The company’s early products were mainly red paint and black powder(粉末) for making tires(轮胎). In 1900, at the new factory in Easton, Black Mill, the company made the first pencil for the school. In 1902, under the demand(需求) of school teachers, the company began to produce dust-free chalk, and achieved great success, and won the gold prize at the Saint Louis World Expo.
Alice Binney, Mr. Edwin Binney’s wife, was a teacher, found that children like to use a kind of thick black pencil to draw on paper. This is the early expensive crayon in Europe.
