One afternoon, something on the Internet caught my eye: a tiny hedgehog held by a big hand. The post read: “HELP! My hedgehog abandoned her two babies, and I cannot raise both of them. Good home with experience needed!”
I had no experience with baby hedgehogs. I was an animal lover and had raised cats, dogs, and birds. But this tiny animal was new to me, and it touched me that he was abandoned, and that maybe I could love him and be the best mom for him.
I wrote the most heartfelt email I could. That was how I found my Louie. True to my word, he was my baby. Louie didn’t know he was a hedgehog. He never curled (蜷缩) into a ball, and he liked my two cats, no fear. The cats, however, were afraid of him, as he often moved into the room, running after the cats and blocking my way.
By the time he reached old age, Louie had only three feet. However, he still managed to climb the stairs to visit other animals.
Life has its meaning! Louie needed a good home, and in return, he helped me realize my dream of taking photos of the hedgehog and made it possible for me to show off photos of him and be a good mom. Hedgehogs require lots of patience, trust, and knowledge—but the pay-off is pretty great.

C.answering a question D.explaining reasons
5.What does the underlined word “abandoned” probably mean in Paragraph 1?

“Fast fashion” refers to how the clothing industry quickly produces lots of cheap clothes and gets them to stores every few weeks. The practice lets shoppers buy new styles all the time. And clothes prices are low. But many of these clothes quickly wear out or go out of style. Their price tags (标签) also don't include all of the clothes’ environmental costs.
“The problem starts with how we think about fashion,” says Kirsi Niinimaki. She’s a fashion, textile and design researcher. “Everyone nowadays owns too many clothes. And we use them a really short time and then dispose of them,” she says. Even if something stays in your closet for years, you might only end up wearing it some 20 times.
Kirsi was part of a team that looked at many studies on the environmental costs of the fashion industry. They found that this industry caused 8 to 10 percent of the global emissions (排放) of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. The industry is also responsible for about one-fifth of the world’s industrial water pollution. And people produce more than 92 million tons of textile and clothing waste each year, the team found. Its report appeared in the April issue of Nature Reviews.
Fashion is a global industry, as Pietra Rivoli learned. She’s an economist at Georgetown University. Rivoli bought a cotton T-shirt in Florida. The tag said it was made in China. But she learned the factory had gotten most of its cotton from Texas. Used or unwanted T-shirts are often popular in Africa. There, people sold them for reuse. She wrote about her findings in The Travels of a T-shirt in The Global Economy.
The journey of your own clothes from fiber (纤维) to finished products comes with environmental costs. Scıentists and engineers have been working on ways to limit some of these influences.

A.The clothes have no price tags.

B.The fashion industry has caused 50% of the world's industrial water pollution.
C.People produce less than 92 million tons of unwanted or used clothes each year.
D.The fashion industry isn’t responsible for the global emissions of carbon dioxide.
11.What may be discussed in the following paragraph?
A.Pietra Rivoli’s new findings in The Travels of a T-shirt in The Global Economy.
B.The importance of reducing the environmental costs of the fashion industry.
C.Reasons why the fashion industry causes great harm to the environment.
D.Methods of reducing the environmental costs of the fashion industry.

On a summer day in 1948, a Swiss man named George de Mestral took his dog for a walk in the mountains. When they came home, George discovered that he and his dog were both covered with burrs(带芒刺 的小果实).
As an engineer, George naturally began to wonder how exactly the burrs stuck to his dog and his clothes. Then he looked at them under a microscope( 显微镜). He found that the burrs had very tiny hooks(钩子), which allowed them to catch on to things like clothes. George realized that he could use this finding to create a new way to fasten things.
As so often, it is a very long journey from the idea to the final product. It was easy to find the materials that could stick together, but finding materials that would continue to do so after years of use was difficult. George tested a large number of different materials and production methods. After years of research and work, he invented what is known today as Velcro. In 1955 George started Velcro Industries to turn his idea into a product. In a few years, the product became popular around the world.
Today Velcro is used everywhere. It’s used in backpacks, jackets, wallets, children’s toys, etc. It even turns up in the places you wouldn’t expect. Are you stressed? Your dog can probably smell it, according to researchers from Queen’s University Belfast in the UK.
The researchers carried out a study to find out if dogs could tell the difference between a person’s normal smell and how he smells when he’s stressed.
To do this, they first collected breath and sweat samples(汗液样本)from human volunteers. To make sure the samples work well, the volunteers were all non-smokers and didn’t eat or drink anything in the hour before the study.
The team then collected samples after the volunteers completed a difficult maths task. The volunteers were asked to report their stress levels before and after the task. The researchers also checked the volunteers ’ stress levels before and after the task by taking their heart rate( 心 率 ) and blood pressure( 血 压 ). In total, 36 out of 53 volunteers reported feeling stressed because of the task and had increased heart rates and blood pressure.
Then each person’s relaxed and stressed samples were shown to four dogs --Treo, Fingal, Soot and Winnie. They were asked to find the stressed ones. Surprisingly, the results showed that the dogs got it right nearly 94%. “It was interesting to see how the dogs were good at smelling people’s feelings, ” said Clara Wilson, one of the researchers. “I hope we can discover even more about these gifted animals and what they can do. ”
Ms Wilson also added that the study could be especially useful in training service dogs, since some of them work hard to help reduce stress.
8. Why were the volunteers asked to complete a difficult maths task?

What is it like to exercise in space? Simple things can be harder in microgravity (微重力), while difficult tasks might suddenly be a breeze. A video on Tuesday shows that Zhai Zhigang, one of the astronauts of Shenzhou ⅩⅢ space -ship, is practising tai chi with flowing movements (流畅的动作).
The three astronauts Zhai Zhigang, WangYaping and Ye Guangfu have been in space for about two months since they began their six-month mission (任务) to build the space station on October16th. Chinese people have long been wondering what really goes on inside the space station. While people were still surprised by Wang Yaping’s zero-gravity hairstyle, Zhai showed his “flying” skill and was clearly very good at it.
Zhai was not the first who practiced tai chi in spaceship. The tradition of Chinese astronauts practising tai chi started in 2012 when the country’s Shenzhou Ⅸ astronaut Liu Yang first did so in space and called the experience comfortable. Before returning from the Shenzhou Ⅻ mission in September, astronaut Nie Haisheng also practised tai chi in the Tianhe core module during an Earth-space video call with HongKong youths.
For space travellers, doing exercise is important. They must exercise to counter (抵消) the gravity-free conditions as the experience of “muscle and bone loss (肌肉和骨质流失)” in space will influence their health and ability to work in the long term.
Besides doing tai chi, Chinese astronauts also play table tennis or ride a bike and run on a treadmill (踏步机) to help train their breathing.
8.The underlined part in the first paragraph may mean “________”.
A.something popular B.something impossible
C.something very simple D.something more difficult
9.What is the advantage of doing exercise in space for astronauts?
A.Allowing them to kill time when they feel very bored.
B.Helping them to live with gravity in the space station.
C.Allowing them to work faster and harder in space.
D.Helping them keep away from muscle and bone loss.
10.The fourth paragraph mainly introduces ________.
A.the reason how gravity takes place
B.the exercise astronauts do in spaceship
C.the importance of having strong muscles
D.the necessity (必要性) of doing exercise in space
11.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The purpose of the Shenzhou ⅩⅢ mission isn't mentioned.
B.Nie Haisheng found the practice of doing tai chi very comfortable.
C.Chinese people are curious (好奇的) about the astronauts’ life in space.
D.Zhai zhigang is the first astronaut who practised tai chi in space in China.
