We have carefully chosen a number of camps from across the country. Take a look at our collection and find one for your children. Canyon Creek Sports Camp This camp provides a safe, non-competitive environment where boys and girls have the opportunity to build confidence and independence, learn teamwork and develop problem-solving skills. With excellent and modern equipment, our perfect sports complex (综合设施) is less than an hour’s drive from West Los Angeles. Camp Pocono Trails Our camp offers a special program to teenagers who want to rediscover their own strengths because they have been too busy texting on their phones. Colvig Silver Camps Our unique program connects creative activities with a 3-5 day adventure in the natural world, providing campers with real challenges that they can overcome. Through that challenge and experience, campers gain a better understanding of themselves and the environment around them. Above all, campers could expect a summer of fun and adventure. YMCA Camp Widjiwagan YMCA camps allow teens to take adventures in the finest wilderness areas throughout North America. I didn’t know what to do so I just followed others. One day, all students were called to the school playground. We were asked to meet an education expert for personality development. Between their funny actions and our loud laughter, somehow the competition was over. At last, he told us the name of the winner … NOBODY. We all were surprised, and silence fell upon us. He said between the first instruction and the first question, there was another line which said, “Read all the questions carefully and answer ONLY THE 10TH QUESTION. ” Needless to say, all the students felt embarrassed. She has written over 250 books and is famous for writing one of the most popular children’s book series. She knew as early as 5th grade that she was interested in writing and science. Cole’s passion (激情) came mostly from one of her elementary school teachers. Joanna Cole continued her education by attending the University of Massachusetts and Indiana. She would eventually earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the City College of New York in 1967. After graduation Cole decided to take some education courses to become a librarian at a Brooklyn elementary school in 1967. Finally, she would take jobs working for Newsweek, Seesaw book club. Cole’s passion for writing and science was still alive and well during this time. In 1971, she decided to write her first book, Cockroaches. She did some research and discovered there had never been a book written for children about cockroaches. So she thought she would be the first. Cole became successful when she wrote the first Magic School Bus in 1985. The book would go on to be published the following year and quickly became book series and cartoon series due to its success. Cole continued to write both non-fiction and fiction books for children. She writes in a way that will hopefully inspire children to think like a scientist. She does this by writing ideas instead of just facts. She also tries to ask questions in her books that require children to think and discover the answers as they read. Scientists finally found the answer but it’s not very pleasant. New science suggests a relationship between light pollution and the timing when trees produce buds, which signals the arrival of the spring season. Light pollution is defined by the Lighting Research Center as the harmful effect of outdoor lighting such as streetlights. Too much light at night destroys natural cycles and makes it hard to see stars and planets . It harms the environment more than we realize . By studying some trees, Researchers found out that trees lit by man-made lights at night start to bud about 7. 5 days earlier than trees in natural darkness. And they found out that light had a more important effect than temperature when the buds came out. The early budding may cause problems for insects, which feed on leaves, and the birds which then feed on them in turn. Professor Richard French Constant, who helped lead the research, explained that more than the budding of trees, the study implies the danger to the balance of the environment. “At the moment, caterpillars (毛毛虫) are born at just the right time to eat the new leaves that trees grow, and birds are born at the right time to eat these young caterpillars. But, when man-made lights make trees grow leaves earlier, it can mess up this natural timing and cause problems for both the caterpillars and the birds. ” he said. Migratory birds (候鸟) are also negatively affected by light pollution. The glare might confuse them and make them lose their flying sense. The situation might explain why some birds accidentally knock into buildings. We need to do more research on how light pollution affects nature. If the problem was left to continue, it is believed that by 2100, spring would begin almost a full month earlier than it does today. 37. What will happen if there is too much man-made light? A. People’s eyesight will be damaged. B. The environment will likely lose its balance. C. No stars or planets may be observed at night. D. Animals ’ living habits may change suddenly. 38. How does the early budding affect insects or plants according to the passage? A. It will cause the rising number of insects. B. It could lead to trees growing fewer leaves. C. It might push insects to hatch more slowly. D. It may lead to some insects going hungry. 39. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph? A. The effect of light pollution is harmful. B. The spring of 2100 will become much longer. C. Light pollution should be taken seriously. D. A further study on light pollution is scheduled. 40. A. why spring comes earlier in some cities B. why light pollution needs to be studied C. how trees ’ early budding takes place D. how much light is “too much” 2023年广东省广州市白云区中考二模英语试题 三、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分, 满分30分) 阅读下面短文, 掌握大意, 然后从26~45各题所给的A、B、C、D项中, 选出最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 (A) Last week I was in the boarding area of the airport, very excited about my trip home to see my parents. I had many plans for the weekend. But my daydream was interrupted by an elderly woman talking loudly into her cellphone. She kept asking the person to meet her where she was and was repeating the gate number into the phone. With each repeat she got a little louder. All the people around were trying to avoid laughing. Then I heard her say, “I’m sorry, I can’t hear you. There seems to be something wrong with my hearing aid.” As I waited for my turn to board, I noticed her tone was becoming increasingly frantic (狂躁的) as she tried to understand the person on the other end of the phone. It was almost my turn to board. I couldn’t stop looking back at the woman. It made me think how lucky I was to have my hearing. Then I realised I could do something to help her. I walked over to the woman and shouted, “Let me help you hear. I’ll tell you what the person is saying.” The doubt that flickered (闪烁) across her face was quickly replaced with understanding, then relief (欣慰). I took the phone from her, listened for a moment, and then told the woman that her husband was waiting for her in the baggage area as he could not enter the gate area. Then I pointed her in the right direction. It took me less than two minutes to help the woman, but my pride in having been able to help her remains strong. 26. A study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18. The finding came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults between the age of 18 and 85 in the United States. Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The survey also found that men and women had similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did. The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age. So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences. The original goal of the study was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older. 30. Old people may be happier probably because _________. A. their children have grown up B. they don’t have to work every day C. they can do whatever they like best D. they are most likely satisfied with life 31. According to the survey, when will adults feel most stressful? A. In their twenties. B. In their fifties. C. In their seventies. D. In their eighties. 32. What may make Arthur Stone a bit surprised? A. Women usually live longer than men. B. Middle-age men mostly are very rich. C. Old people usually have a better sleep. D. Most of old people can’t sleep well at night. 33. Which of the following may be the topic of this passage? A. The difference between men and women. B. Old people’s feeling of happiness. C. The young people and the old people. D. The connection of sleep and happiness. (C) Yao Ming was born in Shanghai in 1980. At 229 centimeters, he was the third tallest player in NBA history. Yao made his first appearance in the NBA during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He surprised many critics with his first games, and was fast becoming an international fan favorite, as he broke Michael Jordan’s record for votes (投票) received. In July 2011 Yao announced his retirement from the NBA due to frequent problems in his left foot. He continuously works to raise awareness of endangered species and even went as far as to stop using shark fin soup at his wedding in 2007. Yao has been saying no to shark fin soup since 2006 when he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador (亲善大使) for wildlife protection. “Shark’s are friends of human beings. They are not our food.” Since his retirement he has become a surprise international force in the field of wildlife protection, and he is using his fame to tell us the difficulties faced by sharks. Most recently he went to Houston Zoo, as part of his continuing effort to educate young people about the importance of wildlife protection. He is part of a large campaign (运动) by the wildlife protection charity WildAid, and has traveled through Africa to see and document the difficulties facing elephants and rhinos in the wild. With elephant and rhinoceros poaching (偷猎) on the rise, Yao also said, “When the buying stops, the killing can too. Get rid of the demand for rhino horn and ivory right at the source. That’s what I want to do.” Although Yao is not the first Chinese player in the NBA, it could be argued that he is the most important one, not just for his taking part in charity and wildlife protection work. His skin was a little darker than hers. His hair was black and white, as if it couldn’t decide which color it should be. “You don’t talk much, Grandpa,” Lisa said. “You don’t visit much, Lisa,” her grandfather replied. They stood looking at each other. “Come with me, Lisa,” said Grandpa. He started walking without looking back. Lisa followed him to a large storehouse. Lisa remembered her last visit to Grandpa’s. No one else.” Then he closed his eyes and smiled. His smile reminded Lisa of her father. Grandpa no longer seemed strange and silent. “I may be so overcapitalized (过剩),” Lisa answered, carefully pronouncing the familiar word. Grandpa looked down at Lisa and smiled. His smile again reminded Lisa of her father. Without thinking, she reached up and took Grandpa’s hand. They are born, grow, and die. Even though stars are not living things, they do have a life cycle. A star is born in a cloud of dust and gas. A young star is blue and very hot. A middle-aged star is yellow. It cools and becomes a red giant. Finally, the star explodes. The light of a star tells astronomers many things about the star. Annie Jump Cannon was an American astronomer who carefully classified(分级)stars by looking at their light. Annie Jump Cannon was born in 1863. Her mother taught her about the constellations(星座)when she was a girl. Annie was interested in studying the stars when she grew up. But not many women went to college in those days. Also, Annie had an illness that caused her lost most of her hearing. But these things didn’t stop Annie from earning two college degrees. Cannon was hired to work at the Harvard College Observatory(天文台) Astronomers there used telescopes and took photographs of the sky. It was an exciting new science. The light from each star passed through a prism(棱镜)in the telescope. A prism is a piece of cut glass. Light passing through a prism is separated into a rainbow. Cannon studied the photos of each band of colors. Almost all photos were black and white. She could not see the colors. She could only see different dark lines. She used them to classify stars from younger and very hot to older and cooler. Annie Jump Cannon classified more than 300, 000 stars! Her star catalog is still used by astronomers all over the world. During her lifetime, Cannon received many honors. In 1934, an award was named for her. The Annie J. Cannon Award in Astronomy is given every year. (C) Whether you are preparing for an emergency situation or packing for a backpacking trip, putting together a survival kit is always necessary. Go through this page, and you may get some ideas about how to make a suitable one for yourself. Step l Preparing the must-haves 1. Clean water Clean water for drinking and cooking is perhaps the most important thing when you are in the wild. If you are preparing for a place where water is not easy to find (such as a desert), you should be sure to take enough clean water. 2. A flashlight A good flashlight is necessary for finding your way around at night. Be sure to include more batteries for your flashlight. 3. A first-aid kit It is convenient for you to buy one, although it is often easy to create your own. You can click here to get the list of a basic first-aid kit. Step 2 Personalizing Your Kit 1. Get ready for terrible weather. What you choose mainly depends on the weather. Packing a change of clothes can be valuable, especially if you become wet. •If heat and sunburn are possible, pack a pair of sunglasses and as much water as you can. •If you are worried about colder temperatures, packing a hat and gloves would be a good idea. 2. Store food in your kit. While not as necessary as water, having some food can provide you with the energy you may need in the wild. Dried foods may be the best choice since they are light in weight. These kinds of food are easy to pack, store and eat. 3. Take a compass and maps. If you know how to read a map and use a compass to find directions, these tools can be valuable, allowing you to make your way towards safety. Even without a map, a compass can help you travel in a direction, instead of ER walking around in circles. 34. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a must-have for the survival kit when travelling through a desert? A. Clean water. B. A first-aid kit. C. A flashlight. D. A pair of sunglasses. 35. How can we prepare for terrible weather with the survival kit? A. Always take more lightweight food with us. B. If we plan to a beach, a hat must be included. C. Packing more clothes can be helpful when we get wet. D. In the colder temperatures, more water should be added. 36. Which picture is suitable to be put in Step 2? A. B. C. D. (D) Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly right as a kind of the wanting and happy understanding usually shown by the children. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gestures(手势)and by making questioning noises. Any attempt(尝试)to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words, leads to great difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises divide themselves as particularly(特别;尤其)expressive as pleasure, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s meaning to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation leads on to easy imitation(模仿)of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises(发生;出现)as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get our teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation; and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use at seven months, of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at another time for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself. I doubt, however, whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds. 37. How do most children behave before learning the language at an early age? A. They ask questions by repeating the words. B. They take in language through different amounts of listening. C. They understand and respond to adults’ oral instructions. D. They are eager and delighted to cooperate with the adults. 38. Children who start speaking late ________. A. may have difficulty in their listening B. probably do not hear enough language spoken around them C. often take a long time in learning to listen properly D. usually pay close attention to what they hear 39The problem of deciding when a baby’s imitations can be considered as speech is not important because ________. A. words have different meanings for different people B. the changeover(变更)takes place gradually C. the meaning of words changes with age D. children’s use of words is often meaningless 40. What can we learn from the underlined sentences in the last paragraph? A. Parents need not teach their children new sounds. B. Children no longer imitate people after they begin to speak. C. Children still enjoy imitating after they can speak. D. Children who are good at imitating no longer need parents’ help. 答案: 2024年广东省广州市白云区中考二模英语试题 26~28: DBC 29~32: DCBA 33~36: DABC 37~40:BDCA 2023年广东省广州市白云区中考二模英语试题 26.C 27.B 28.C 29.D 30.D 31.A 32.C 33.B 34.D 35.A 36.B 37.C 38.B 39.C 40.D 2022年广东省广州市白云区中考二模英语试题 26.
