Jim Curry lights a stove in the parking lot of Christ Episcopal Church in Guilford. It’ll get up to 2,000 degrees, hot enough to soften the metal of shotgun parts so they can be reshaped.
A crowd is watching, and Curry picks out a 9-year-old named Oliver to help him. “This is really magic,” Curry says. “Right before your very eyes, you’re gonna see Oliver transform this gun, this instrument of potential harm, into something that could never be a gun ever again. It’s gonna be a trowel (泥铲), which could be used to plant flowers in a garden.”
“It is exciting,” Oliver says. “I love the fact that you can take metal that’s random and shape it into something useful.”
Curry, a retired priest, is a co-founder of Swords to Plowshares (犁) Northeast, the organization putting on this event, which helps police departments manage their gun buyback programs and repurpose the weapons into gardening tools.
The finished tools are donated to community gardens and agricultural high schools and the harvested vegetables donated to soup kitchens and homeless shelters, according to the group’s website.
Retired priest Mary Ann first volunteered with Swords to Plowshares when a family member fell victim to gun violence. She helps collect guns through police buybacks. “When there’s such despair now in our country, people need to know that we can change. There is hope,” she says.
Curry wears a constant reminder of that hope around his neck. It’s two large pieces of metal molded into the shape of a cross. “It’s made out of pieces of an AK-47 used for killing”, he says. “But God’s love breaks it apart, reshapes it, then transforms it into the sign of greatest hope — the cross. And that’s why I wear it.”
24.What do Curry and Oliver do in the parking lot?
A.They measure the temperature of a hot stove.
B.They do magic tricks in front of many people.
C.They turn what’s threatening into what’s useful.
D.They do experiments on how to make useful tools.
25.Where can you find the reshaped tools from the text?
A.In homeless shelters. B.In some famous gardens.
C.In agricultural high schools. D.In kitchens of the community.
26.What can be inferred from Marry Ann’s words?
A.She feels desperate as she lost her beloved one.
B.Her country may be under threat from gun violence.
C.She will do something significant to rescue the world.
D.Her family member was killed because of gun violence.
27.What can you learn about Curry from the last paragraph?
A.He made the cross all by himself.
B.His cross is a weapon used to kill.
C.The cross reminds him to reshape more tools.
D.The cross represents his hope for a better life.

We’ve all heard the phrase “use your time wisely” in our lives. How can we use our time “wisely”? In an increasingly urbanizing world, we are busier, required to do more to get into college or other higher academic institutions, or to get a job and do well at it. Because of that, things we do to relax, like reading a book, going out with friends or napping, are becoming rarer.
Doing something that doesn’t quite directly help you reach your goal (like the things for relaxation) is often viewed as “wasting your time” because we only have limited time. But even if relaxing or having fun takes time away from being “productive”, they shouldn’t be considered “a waste of time”. If we don’t do things for fun, what is there to enjoy in life?
There have been numerous studies indicating how relaxation and going out with friends can improve your mental and physical health. Being able to take part in an enjoyable hobby or spend time with someone you enjoy being around can help release “feel good” hormones (荷尔蒙) that can reduce some stress in your daily life, thus improving physical health in the long run.
But of course, as a part-time hypocrite (伪善者) on this topic, sometimes when I find myself enjoying a book, playing a video game, or scrolling on TikTok, I get this awful feeling instantly after that I could have used that time to do something productive like taking textbook notes or finishing an assignment. Or maybe I would go out with my friends during the day and come back to my dorm just to think about how I could have used that time to study for an upcoming exam. We’ve all been there.
However, even if it isn’t evident, doing those little things prevents us from burning out too fast. It creates some positive memories hanging in your mind that will hopefully get you through a tough patch. You need to relax in order to be productive later on. The popular concept of a work-life balance also tells us you should do things that you enjoy to keep the balance, and therefore, would not be considered “a waste of time”.
28. What is often thought as “a waste of time” according to paragraph 2?
A. Hanging out with friends. B. Preparing for a business trip.
C. Training for school basketball matches. D. Reading for an essay assigned last week.
29. How does relaxation benefit us?
A. It improves our health shortly.
B. It develops our hobbies greatly.
C. It releases hormones to develop our stress.
D. It strengthens us physically and mentally.
30. What does the underlined sentence “We’ve all been there.” mean?
A. We’ve taken the exam. B. We’ve been somewhere already.
C. We all have had the same experience. D. We all have come back to the dormitory.
31. What’s the author’s attitude toward “wasting time”?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Disapproving. D. Conservative.
D
In order to meet growing food production and energy needs in low-and middle-income countries, solar-powered groundwater irrigation (灌溉) is rapidly gaining ground. More than 500,000 solar pumps (泵) have been set up in south Asia over the last few years and a major expansion is planned across sub-Saharan Africa.
Dustin Garrick, professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, along with an international team, examined the trend toward solar pumps as a clear opportunity for boosting agricultural yields and reducing poverty, but the opportunity comes with risks.
While replacing electric or gas pumps with solar-powered irrigation holds the promise of reducing carbon emissions (排放), it is not guaranteed. Farmers who have access to these pumps may expand production of crops or diversify into other activities, which are not emissions neutral. Solar pumps will increase groundwater pumping efficiency, which may be desirable in regions that support such increases, but this could worsen groundwater lessening in regions that are already stressed. The cheap clean energy of solar pumps may lead to increased groundwater development, without necessarily decreasing overall emissions.
Despite these challenges, the clean-energy boost can serve as a stimulus for positive change in water and energy management but will require enhanced regulation and planning in both low-and high-income settings. Garrick and his team advocate for improved data collection initiatives, with a shift from separated to integrated approaches. They suggest using technology to measure water pumping and collecting remotely sensed data to monitor land use changes. As well, regulatory improvements are crucial, with mounting limits for carbon emissions and groundwater lessening established at various levels.
With groundwater management already a difficult challenge, we must act fast to understand the implications of the clean energy boost and poverty reduction acts to avoid these gains being won away by wells running dry. The rapid adoption of solar irrigation intensifies the urgency, demanding adaptation from governments and institutions to sail through these complexities.
32. According to paragraph 3, there is a conflict between ________.
A. poor farmers and solar-powered irrigation
B. human consumption and clean energy limits
C. crop diversity and crop production expansion
D. pumping efficiency and groundwater exhaustion
33. What did Garrick and his team suggest for a positive change?
A. Integrating data collection and regulation. B. Improving carbon emission monitoring.
C. Separating data for land use changes. D. Establishing groundwater levels.
34. What does the author propose the readers do?
A. Perform as the authorities suggest. B. Act based on further understanding.
C. Quicken the adoption of solar irrigation. D. Challenge the groundwater management.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Complexities of Adopting Solar Pumps
B. Solar-Powered Irrigation: Farmers’ New Future
C. The Promise and Risks of Solar-Powered Irrigation
D. Balancing Clean Energy Boost and Poverty Reduction

Michael saw the trouble coming. There standing in the hallway was Frank, the boy who enjoyed making fun of anyone at any given moment. Frank was tall and strong, so few of his victims stood up to him. Michael hated the idea that Frank always got away with his wrongdoing. Yet like most kids who were picked on, he just took it quietly and waited for the unpleasant to pass.
Frank walked up, his eyes locked on the books in Michael’s arms. When they met, Frank stopped unexpectedly, “Hey, let me see those books!” Some students watched as Michael held out the books he was carrying, trying not to give away his nervousness.
Frank took a book, looked inside for a second, and then threw the book at Michael, who dropped all the other books. “Hey, those are school property,” Frank barked, “Be careful!” Then he walked away, laughing loudly.
Michael, his cheeks turning red, half kicked the fallen books. Suddenly a hand picked up one book. “You look like you could use a p ally (盟友),” a friendly voice said. It was Ramon, the most athletic boy in the high school. Michael couldn’t believe Ramon was stopping to help him as they barely spoke.
“Thanks,” Michael sighed with relief. “It’s confusing. I don’t know what his problems is.”
“Well, as I see it,” Ramon said, “you need to find a way to end this.” Michael nodded, stuck for what to say. Ramon continued, “You know my grandmother used to tell me whenever I had a problem with someone. She’d say, ‘You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar (醋).’”
Looking puzzled, Michael asked, “What does that mean?”
“It means kindness may be more effective than anger,” Ramon explained.
“Can you just tell Frank to stop picking on me?” Michael suggested.
“That’s vinegar,” Ramon laughed as he walked away. “Try honey instead.”
Ramon’s words left Michael thinking.
The next school day brought Michael’s usual pain. There stood Frank, and Michael knew it would be just seconds before he had to face him in the middle of the hall. Frank came nearer.

W: Mike, how is work?
M: Not so good. I often face challenges at work that I find very hard to handle. I really regret not having gone to college.
W: Why not try a trusted platform for online education? You can find a lot of college-level courses on the Internet.
M: Could you recommend such a platform?
W: Certainly. You can give edX a shot. It’s founded by Harvard and MIT. The courses are created and taught by professors from top universities.
M: That’s great. Are the courses free?
W: No, but they are definitely much cheaper than an actual college course. You can also achieve a certificate when you complete them.
M: Are the courses pre-recorded?
W: Yes. Users can learn at their own pace. However, all assignments are due when the course ends.
M: Well, I’ll certainly give it a try. I do want to be more learned and gain some useful skills through some online courses.

W: Mike, are you going to the fair the day after tomorrow?
M: What fair?
W: The annual fair that Riverdale puts on the first Saturday in June to raise money for the Riverdale Hospital. The fair is going to be held in the park this year. Haven’t you noticed the tents that have already been put up?
M: Yes, I have. What are they for?
W: They are for special events and displays. I’m going to help serve food at the food tent on Saturday afternoon.
M: Sounds good. Ah, I hear the local bands will give a performance. Is that part of the fair?
W: Well, that will be at the entertainment tent, but that event will be on Friday evening before the fair starts. The fair starts with a big charity event on Saturday morning and there will be some real treasures for sale then. There will be an art show on Saturday afternoon and a special game tent just for children.
M: And all the profits from the fair go to support the hospital? What a good idea!
Text 10
W: Are you a pet owner? A study shows that British people with dogs or cats would like to turn on the radio or the TV while they’re away from home for their pets. They want to make the pets feel less lonely. But do your pets like this?
Sometimes dogs respond to human music. The study found that classical music appeared to have a calming effect on the dogs. Some of them chose to simply lie down to listen to it. Meanwhile, music by the heavy metal band seemed to excite the dogs. Finally, pop music, much like the sounds of human conversations, appeared to have no effect on them.
For cats, they hardly respond to human music because their hearing range is different from that of humans. So what they hear when they listen to our music is different from what we hear. Scientists once tried to see what would happen if they played "cat music" for the cats. They asked the musician David Teie to make special music for cats. And, it turns out, when playing this music to 47 cats in the study compared to playing two different classical music pieces, the cats paid more attention to the cat music.
Good news for cat lovers is that they can buy special cat music online. David Teie created cat music for sale online.

【答案】28. A 29. D 30. C 31. B
【解析】

Or maybe I would go out with my friends during the day and come back to my dorm just to think about how I could have used that time to study for an upcoming exam. A. We’ve taken the exam我们已经参加了考试;B. We’ve been somewhere already我们已经去过某个地方了;C. We all have had the same experience我们都有同样的经历;D. We all have come back to the dormitory我们都回到宿舍了。故选C。

【参考答案】
Then, suddenly, the unexpected happened. Just as Michael looked nervously, Frank somehow tripped over something. Down he fell onto the ground, sending all his books flying and spreading out on the floor. Although Michael was just as shocked, his mind was racing. Then Ramon's Grandma's words popped into his mind, “You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” He knew what to do. Barely had Frank gotten up with loads of embarrassment when Michael went up.
Michael bent down and quickly picked up Frank's books on the floor. Offering them to him, Michael said with a smile, “You look like you could use an ally.” Now, it was Frank's turn to be numbed there with burning cheeks. He quickly took his books, muttered in a low voice, “Uh, thanks” and fled the scene. Out of the corner of his eye, Michael caught Ramon approaching with a knowing smile and a thumbs-up. “My grandma would be proud of you,” Ramon remarked. “Well, I guess that's just honey,” Michael grinned. “And I hope it sticks.”
