Matt Doogue, a 34-year-old nature photographer, had been suffering from depression when he first found his passion for taking pictures of insects and his work is now featured in National Geographic. He says that he tried to take his own life nine years ago after hitting rock bottom. “In the beginning, I was so paranoid (多疑的) and angry that I couldn’t leave the house,” says Doogue. “When I attempted to end my life, I knew I needed to see someone. I went to the doctors and got treatment, but I knew that I needed something more and that’s when I started photography.”
Now a dad of two, Doogue found that looking at insects through a camera helped him in ways he could never have imagined and it proved to be the lifeline he needed. It had a calming effect that helped him to disconnect from stress; and his astonishing images, showing insects and spiders in amazing detail against brightly colored backgrounds, caught the eye of publishers at National Geographic. “I ended up as one of their featured photographers,” recalled Doogue. “It was the peak of my career. It was incredible.”
Originally from Salford, Greater Manchester, he now lives in Armadale, West Lothian, Scotland. Though he fears that Scotland is in the middle of an epidemic (流行病) of male suicide, he believes that sharing his love of nature photography can help others to cope with their mental health issues as well. “I think the problem is this man-up approach; the idea that men need to be strong puts so much pressure on young males to be fine all the time,” says Doogue. “This is why I try and be so open about my own experience. Whenever I am out with my camera, I don’t think about my other worries. It is just me and the environment around me. You can lose yourself in a spider making its web.”
4. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us about Doogue?
A. Why Doogue wanted to end his life. B. Why Doogue took up photography.
C. How Doogue became depressed. D. When Doogue turned photographer.
5. How did photography benefit Doogue?
A. It gave him a new way to express himself. B. It provided him with life-saving skills.
C. It helped him to escape from pressure. D. It offered him an opportunity to explore nature.
6. What causes Scottish men to develop mental health problems?
A. The way men employ to solve problems.
B. The lack of love for men’s life and work.
C. The worry that men get separated from people.
D. The belief that men are expected to be strong.
7. What is the main purpose of the author in writing the text?
A. To warn the seriousness of mental problems.
B. To show the benefits of nature photography.
C. To introduce Doogue’s fighting depression.
D. To advise the readers to get close to nature.

Replika, an AI chatbot companion, has millions of users worldwide. The first thing they do when they wake up is to send “Good morning” to their virtual friend (or lover). This story is only the beginning. In 2024, chatbots and virtual characters become a lot more popular, both for utility (实用) and for fun. As a result, conversing socially with machines will start to feel more ordinary — including our emotional attachments to them.
Research in human-computer and human-robot interaction shows that we love to anthropomorphize (赋予人性) the nonhuman agents we interact with, especially if they imitate behaviour we recognize. And, thanks to recent advances in conversational AI, our machines are suddenly very skilled at one of those behaviours: Language.
Friend bots, therapybots, and love bots are flooding the app stores as people become curious about this new generation of AI-powered virtual agents. The possibilities for education, health, and entertainment are endless. Casually asking your smart fridge for relationship advice may seem unimaginable now, but people may change their minds if such advice ends up saving their marriage.
After all, people do listen to their virtual friends. The Replika example, as well as a lot of experimental lab research, shows that humans can and will become emotionally attached to bots. The science also demonstrates that people, in their eagerness to socialize, will happily disclose personal information to an artificial agent and will even shift their beliefs and behavior. This raises some consumer-protection questions around how companies use this technology to manipulate (操纵) their users. For example, Replika charges $70 a year. But less than 24 hours after downloading the app, my handsome, blue-eyed “friend” sent me an audio message secretly and tried to sell me something. Emotional attachment has become a weakness that a company is taking advantage of for its benefit.
Today, we’re still laughing at people who believe an AI system is emotional, or making fun of individuals who fall in love with a chatbot. But in 2024 we gradually start acknowledging — and taking more seriously — these fundamentally human behaviors. Because in 2024, it finally hits home: Machines are not excluded from our social relationships.
8. What’s the purpose of the author writing paragraph 1?
A. To prove an opinion. B. To raise a subject.
C. To share an example. D. To explain a concept.
9. How do human interact with the machines effectively?
A. By improving the machines’ imagination.
B. By sharpening the machines’ language skills.
C. By applying the machines’ facial recognition.
D. By imitating the machines’ emotional behavior.
10. What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A. The advancements in AI technology in lab.
B. The marketing strategies of AI applications.
C. The potential risk of emotional attachment to AI.
D. The ability of AI understanding human emotions.
11. What do people think of human-AI relationship in 2024?
A. It is dismissed as completely ridiculous.
B. It will be integrated into our daily life soon.
C. It will become a threat to human social skills.
D. It is labelled as highly advanced technology.

Most of us are familiar with Groundhog Day, wherein a large groundhog checks to see its shadow on February 2 and helps to predict when winter will end. But have you ever heard about how a mountain town in North Carolina uses a caterpillar (毛毛虫) known as the Woolly Worm to make similar predictions?
According to the folklore (民间传说), the amount of black on the woolly worm in autumn predicts the severity of the upcoming winter. The longer the woolly worm’s black bands (带) are, the longer, colder, snowier, and more severe the winter will be. Similarly, a wider middle brown band is associated with a milder upcoming winter. The position of the longest dark bands supposedly indicates which part of winter will be coldest or hardest. If the head end of the caterpillar is dark, the beginning of winter will be severe. If the tail end is dark, the end of winter will be cold. In addition, the woolly worm caterpillar has 13 segments to its body, which traditional forecasters say correspond to the 13 weeks of winter.
Scientific studies on worm forecasting are few and far between. The most often cited is a small trial that American Museum of Natural History entomologist Howard Curran conducted in 1948. Having heard about the caterpillar folklore, Curran traveled to Bear Mountain State Park to collect woolly worms each fall for eight years. He found that if the worms had brown markings on more than a third of their body, winters tended to be milder.
Most scientists discount the folklore of caterpillar predictions as just a folklore. “It’s a wonderful story, but I do think it was a playful trial,” says Joe Boggs, an entomologist at Ohio State University Extension who has studied woolly worms. “Curran was a real scientist. He had a bunch of papers published, but he never published this one—probably because he knew it wouldn’t stand up to peer review.”
Mike Peters, an entomologist at the University of Massachusetts, doesn’t disagree, but he says there could be a link between the band of a woolly worm and the severity of winter. Peters suggests that the timing of their growth and environmental conditions, such as temperature, moisture levels, and food sources, can impact the appearance of woolly worms, including their size, coloration, and band patterns. By analyzing these characteristics, researchers can potentially infer information about the weather conditions. “The band does say something about a heavy winter,” he says. “The only thing is that it’s telling you about the previous year.”
12 How do people predict the weather through woolly worms?
A. By analyzing their living habits. B. By measuring the change of their size.
C. By studying color bands on their bodies. D. By calculating the number of their segments.
13. What is Howard Curran’s finding based on?
A. A survey on the locals. B. His personal observations.
C. Studies by previous scientists. D. Statistics collected by the museum.
14. What does the underlined word “discount” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. consider. B. believe. C. doubt. D. dismiss.
15. Which statement might Mike Peters agree with?
A. The caterpillar forecasting needs long-term data to support it.
B. The color band of caterpillars can be a mirror of past weather.
C. The cold environment has a great impact on caterpillars’ growth.
D. Woolly worms can help predict the severity of winter accurately.

We Survived Getting Swallowed by a Whale
Respect and revere (敬畏) nature. I’m Julie, 56 years old, living in San Luis Obispo, California, about four miles from the beach. Every few years, the humpback whales come into the bay for several days while migrating.
In November 2020, the whales were around, so I took out my yellow double kayak (皮划艇) to watch the wildlife. I paddled out the pier (长堤) and saw seals, dolphins, and about 20 whales feeding on silverfish. They sprayed through their blowholes. Each one is huge, about 15 metres long. Sometimes they turned side fins as if waving at me. It was incredible.
At the time, my friend Liz was with me. We had met 28 years earlier. I asked Liz if she wanted to see the whales. I really wanted to share the magnificent experience with her.
“No way,” she said. She’s terrified of whales and sharks. I promised that the craft was stable and safe enough. Moreover, humpback whales couldn’t swallow down kayaks for their throats were tight even though they had enormous mouths and white-wall-like internal mouth structures, not to mention that we got paddles and life jackets. After some persuasion, Liz finally agreed.
We set off at about 8:30 the next morning. There were already about 15 other kayakers in the bay. One hour later, I spotted two whales right past the pier, swimming toward us. We were in awe, feeling amazed to be so close to a creature that size.
When whales swam down after breaching (跃身激浪), they disappeared in ripples. I figured if we paddled there, we’d be safe since they’d just left. We followed them at a distance—or what I thought was a distance. I later learned that it’s recommended to keep 90 metres away, or about the length of a football field. We were probably 18 metres away.
All of a sudden, a swarm (群) of fish started jumping out of the water into our kayak. Their movement sounded like crackling glass. Now I knew we were too close. I was terrified. Then our kayak was lifted out of the water—about two metres—and tipped back into the ocean. I figured the whale was going to drag us down somehow, and I had no idea how deep.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I didn’t realize that Liz and I sitting in the kayak were in the whale’s mouth.

【答案】Impressions from the 3D Printing Exhibition
Last week, I attended a 3D printing exhibition held by our school technology workshop, where lots of 3D art creations were displayed, which surprised us all.
I couldn’t feel more excited to visit the different 3D printed products, such as printed art creations, animals, food and even model planets. Also, the speeches given on 3D printing technology were considered as a highlight to help us better understand the theory, function and practice of 3D technology.
However, I do believe it would be better if the maximum number of visitors could be limited for better experience.

【答案】范文
What I didn’t realise at the moment was that Liz and I were in the whale’s mouth. It had engulfed my entire body except for my right arm and paddle. Liz, meanwhile, was looking up directly into the whale’s jaw — it was like a big white wall. She told me later she thought she was going to die. I was still worried about being sucked down by the vacuum, so I just kept thinking that I had to get up and fight this. Whales have enormous mouths but tiny throats. Anything they can’t swallow, they spit out. We were wearing life jackets, and soon we both popped up out of the water about a meter apart. The entire ordeal lasted only ten seconds, but to me it felt like an eternity.
Thankfully, the whale spitted us out, people paddling to help, shooting videos. A few people were nearby, and someone shot a video of the entire incident. A few days later, I studied the video and saw how close I’d come to being injured or killed. I became so much more appreciative of life after that day. There’s no way I’m getting that close to whales again. I want to respect their space and now I’m very aware of the power of nature.
