I’d never been there before, and I had it in my head that I’d walk in and see men with a smell of metal, asphalt shingles(沥青瓦) and truck oil in the air.But the image I created in my head was far from the truth. As I walked up to the main entrance of Universal Roofing in Indianapolis,I was greeted by a lovely lady.We didn’t know each other, but she was so welcoming and led me straight to the Grilliant Foods barbeque buffet. I soon filled my plate and headed for a table populated with people I didn’t know. After several bites, I started meeting my fellow table mates: a mix of a retired employee, a customer, and a partner, all of whom were talking about how long they had known Rob,who was the owner of the company, and the pleasant experiences of working with him. I personally was most impressed with the retired employee at the table. He was back and enjoying himself simply because he missed the people. After lunch I started to walk through the hall.I was impressed with how nicely decorated everything was. From the choice of colors on the walls, the furniture ,and flooring, there was love put into the decoration. On my walk,I was soon stopped, hugged and thanked for coming by Rob, and his son, Sam. In reality, they hadn’t known me all that long, but there was an unspoken feeling I had—I felt at home. Later, I visited their website. “Rob treats everyone who works for him like family,” reads the website. Actually, he treats everyone like family, and because of that, everyone around him treats the people they encounter like family. It’s what has made him so successful in business and in life. 4.What did the lovely lady do for the author? A.She warmly led him to enjoy food. B.She prepared a special table for him. C.She cooked him some delicious food. D.She filled his plate with food in person. 5.What is the author’s table mate’s attitude towards Rob? A.Envious. B.Uncaring. C.Doubtful. D.Favorable. 6.What impressed the author on his walk through the hall after lunch? A.Sam’s calmness. B.The activities. C.The decoration. D.Rob’s quietness. 7.What contributes most to Rob’s success in the author’s opinion? A.How he treats others. B.His family’s support. C.His great imagination. D.Online advertisements. C Not only was Gene Stratton-Porter one of Indiana's most well-known authors, but she was also an environmentalist, photographer, and artist. Gene shared her passion for the environment and wildlife in her writing and used her influence to fight for the preservation of nature and alert others to the importance of their natural surroundings. Born in 1863 in Indiana, she grew up with a love of nature and spent most of her innocent childhood wandering through farms and forests, catching butterflies and observing birds like doves and small animals like geese. In 1886, Gene married Charles Porter. Although she expressed happiness with her family life, Gene lived a more independent life traditionally unavailable to women in the late nineteenth century. Gene insisted on writing and photographing wildlife around her cabin near Limberlost Swamp. There she expressed her passionate feelings towards nature and its preservation. She spent much time in Limberlost, and later the cabin became the site where she conducted field studies on Indiana's natural environment. Early in her life, Gene studied nature in the Limberlost Swamp and recorded her thorough observations through photographs and detailed writings. Gene published dozens of books—novels, nature studies, poetry collections and children's books. Her books mainly connect readers to natural settings and earn her a high reputation. One of her best-known novels, A Girl of the Limberlost is about a lonely girl who lives on a farm and escapes from her sufferings in Limberlost. Gene's legacy (遗留物)is visible not only within her books, photography and films but also within the Limberlost Swamp, which eventually faded away to the farmland. Fortunately, through her hard work and dedication, the land is slowly being restored to its natural state, with over 400 acres preserved for nature study today. 8.Which of the following can best describe Gene? A.Considerate. B.Mysterious. C.Productive. D.Generous. 9.What can we learn about Gene in the 1880s? A.She conveyed her passion for natural conservation. B.She was absorbed in her happy family life totally. C.She spent an unforgettable childhood on the farm. D.She moved to Limberlost to enjoy independence. 10.What made Gene obtain a wide recognition? A.Publishing many books of different types. B.Teaching herself to learn photography. C.Taking various pictures of surroundings. D.Getting her readers more access to nature. 11.What is Limberlost Swamp like now? A.It centers on preserving the wildlife. B.It is turning into its original condition. C.It offers cabins for scientific research. D.It has transferred to farmland forever. D As an astronomer(天文学家),I am accustomed to observing the universe in quiet places. I observe galaxies in the deep universe-places so far away that their light takes billions of years to reach our eyes. Sometimes I wonder what our own galaxy looked like billions of years ago, before solar system was born. I often stare at the Hubble Deep Field(哈勃深空区)searching for clues∶galaxies colliding(碰撞),stars exploding, and stellar nurseries. Can looking to the stars bring us closer together? A couple of months ago,Betelgeuse,a bright star in the Orion constellation(猎户座) started to get dimmer and dimmer. Astronomers all over the world thought this might be a signal that the star was about to explode. Though it might not happen for another 1000 years or more, still I went outside every night to check it out. I was hoping that it would explode. Imagine seeing a star shining as bright as the full moon even during the day. I started dreaming about using such an event to remind everyone that stars produce nearly all of the chemical elements in the universe, which came directly out of the Big Bang. Everything we breathe, touch and see was made inside of stars. The iron in our blood, calcium bones, and almost the entire periodic table are products of stellar evolution. Betelgeuse did not explode, and more recent observations note that it is actually returning to normal. But nothing is normal here on Earth now. I am beginning to realize that we did not need a star to explode to unite us. All we needed was a common problem. I am hoping that everyone on the planet is saving some time to contemplate(凝视,沉思)the universe and to realize we are not alone. No matter where we are or who we are, we are on this planet together. Since we are all made of stars, looking up at the night sky gives us a glimpse of our past and our future, and we can contemplate both together. 12.Why does the author write this article? A.To advise others to stare at a potentially exploding star recently. B.To research into the scientific mystery in the universe with readers. C.To discuss the proper relationship between human and the universe. D.To suggest us thinking about the way human beings live in this world. 13.According to the article, Betelgeuse________. A.is a star the author tracked for years B.will produce chemical elements if it explodes C.is a normal star which is disappearing D.will explode in ten thousand years 14."Such an event"underlined in Paragraph 4 refers to________. A.Betelgeuse's potential explosion B.Betelgeuse's getting dimmer and dimmer C.the author's checking out every night D.a star's shining as bright as the sun 15.What's the best title of this passage? A.What should an astronomer do? B.Should we know more about the universe? C.Looking to the stars can bring us closer together. D.Getting united is a problem impossible to solve. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 Every boy and every girl expects their parents to give them more pocket money. To their surprise, they discovered that there was no emergency at all, only to find that the younger child, about three years old, was playing with the phone. Adam told the mother that she should let the kids play their own toys instead of the telephone. The mother said sorry to them, promising that she would make the kid far away from the telephone. The similar things would happen many times a year. All the firemen were not angry about it, especially with a three-year old kid. Adam and Ben looked around their house again and made sure there was really not any danger before they left their house. After they go on their fire engine (消防 车), Adam asked curiously, “Have you noticed something strange in their house?” Ben thought for a while and answered, “All of them weren't smiling. It seemed like they weren’t happy at all.” “Yes, you are right! But anything else? I still felt there was something wrong in their house." The two young men looked at each other, and cried almost at the same time, “There was no Christmas tree!” It was December 23rd. It was a day when all families were preparing their Christmas buying gifts, making the delicious food, decorating their Christmas trees and so on, busy but happy. But the family they just met didn't have a Christmas tree in their house! It was pretty obvious that the family was having a poor life and they couldn't afford to buy a single Christmas tree! “Maybe they weren't going to have a Christmas this year. It was terrible!” Ben murmured (低声说) to himself. 注意:续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Paragraph 1: Two young firemen left the house with a plan. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: “We are not firemen this time!"
