NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
The Stories Behind 3 of the Photos from Our Pictures of the Year
Each year, National Geographic will publish a special issue to showcase some of the impressive images taken around the globe to celebrate the high-quality photography. This year, 49 were selected as the best photos of the year out of millions of images, and the photo editors give a glimpse behind the scenes of 3 images included in 2024 Pictures of the Year annual special issue.
Qanaaq, Greenland//Kiliii Yüyan
Photographer Kiliii Yüyan is no stranger to documenting the daily lives of native peoples and the issues they face around the world. He commits himself to capturing surprising and unique images for each story while his colleague Mallory has quit in their tracks. In his story, two cousins push strollers(婴儿车)across a snowy plain in Greenland on their way to annual dogsled races. The story itself challenges readers to think about how to treat their ecosystem (生态系统)without destroying it and gives more insight into the daily lives of Inuit women.
Canary Islands, Spain//Carsten Peter
It’s hard to capture the speed, texture, and sense of danger of lava(岩浆)flowing from a volcanic eruption, but that’s what photographer Carsten Peter achieved with this image. He documented the 85-day eruption for National Geographic, then returned to focus on the damage and on the scientific fieldwork that had been done once the slow-moving lava had cooled.
Minneriya, Sri Lanka//Brent Stirton
Photographer provided a window into these animals’ lives, which she hopes will increase awareness and stir up sympathy(同情)through the photo.
The image was tough to capture not only because Stirton needed to get close to the wild animals for the frame but also because it was a challenging time to work in Sri Lanka. The government was falling apart in economic crisis. “I think there’s an opportunity to show people a side of animals they may have not seen before,” she says.

Aarrav Anil, the 17-year-old student With a passion for robotics from Bengraluro, invented a smart spoon that can help people with Parkinson’s disease eat with dignity.
Aarrav’s interest in creating a smart spoon came from seeing his uncle Arjun who has Parkinson’s disease struggling to feed himself. This disease affects the brain and leads to involuntary shaking. Hence, food kept spilling out of his mouth and onto his clothing.Aarrav wanted his uncle to be able to eat by himself with dignity.
Aarrav took to his room with microcontrollers, motors, sensors and a 3-D printer. Not everything went smoothly.“It was frustrating not being able to find the tiny electronics parts I needed here in India. I had to order some from China.but they took ages to arrive.”Aarrav said.Through tireless efforts. Aarrav made a first model but the handle was too slippery for his uncle to use so he had to change it.Then the prototype (维形) went to be tested at the RV College of Physiotherapy in Bengaluru.
“I’ve been fine tuning the design based on the college’s feedback — that it needs to be waterproof so that it can be washed without damaging all the electronics inside; and that it must be detachable (可拆卸的) so it can be cleaned and replaced by a fork.” Aarrav said. The trials being conducted at the college are expected to be completed by early 2024 and the results will be published in a medical journal.
Aarrav hopes that his smart spoon will begin to be manufactured on a small scale when the testing is complete. While other smart spoons already exist and two US companies are already producing their own versions, the cost is too high for most Indians. Aarrav’s version is estimated to cost around 580). His hope is that everyone with Parkinson’s disease will have access to a smart spoon.
24. What can Aarrav’s invention help people with Parkinson’s disease do?

This fall, students at the University of Massachusetts found a new menu at their canteens: the "diet for a cooler planet" menu. This meant herb-roasted lamb, raised with a carbon-friendly approach. It included sweet potatoes that had been picked from a local farm's field. The options were plant-heavy, locally grown, and involved little or no packaging.
"We wanted to let students participate in climate action by making choices about their food," says Kathy Wicks, sustainability director for UMass Dining. The university is not alone in this effort. Increasingly, American consumers and institutions are thinking about how their food choices impact climate change. For many, small choices at the grocery store and restaurant can be more accessible than big-ticket options like buying a fuel-efficient car.
Small changes in eating habits may make a big difference. Studies point to the food system as a significant cause of global warming. According to Project Drawdown, a research organization that evaluates climate solutions, the way food is grown, transported, and consumed accounts for about 1/4 of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. Beef is a regular target. "If, on average, Americans cut 1/4 pound of beef per week from their diet, it's like taking 10 million cars off the road a year," says Sujatha Bergen, director of health campaigns for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Food waste ranks third among climate solutions. While much waste occurs before consumers are involved, Americans also throw out a lot of food they have purchased: about $1,600 worth a year per family of four.
"People are beginning to understand that their food choices have a big impact on climate," says Megan Larmer, director of regional food at the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming in New York. But she adds that substantial change will need to come from the whole food system.
28. What is the purpose of the new menu at the University of Massachusetts?
A. To market the cold dishes.
B. To reduce the cost of packaging.
C. To raise low carbon awareness.
D. To popularize the plant-heavy diet.
29. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. Food choices matter much to global warming.
B. Food is a decisive factor for climate change.
C. Universities are working together in climate action.
D. Fuel-efficient cars are not affordable for consumers.
30. What does Sujatha Bergen say about beef?
A. It plays a significant role in American's diet.
B. It is popular among millions of car drivers.
C. It has no relationship with gas emission.
D. It has great influence on carbon reduction.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Food System Reform: A Successful Trial
B. Low Carbon Diet: A trend, or More?
C. Carbon Emission: A Killer, or Healer?
D. Global Warming: An Approaching Danger
D
The words “caring” and “empathetic” (共情的) aren’t ones normally associated with technology. Yearsley, an Australian enterpriser who is expert in artificial intelligence (AI), is trying to change that.
Yearsley is the founder of Akin, a robotics startup that currently uses a tablet-based system to help users manage the tasks related to homelife, whether that’s planning meals or reminding you to pay your cell phone bill. Current home devices made by Google or Amazon or Apple use predictive AI to track patterns, strengthen behaviors and manipulate (操控) buying decisions, some of which, she assumes, are questionable or just unhealthy.
In contrast, the AI that she is developing will be designed to run the human home, encouraging healthful decisions such as taking a nightly walk, refilling the fridge and supporting social interactions like lunches or birthday celebrations with friends. “It’s the hardest AI I have ever built for it’s a complex system, Yearsley says.
Yearsley began developing the Akin technology in 2017,when she realized the need to better manage the home is hugely ignored. Besides, she realized that women unequally bear the burden of household work. A United Nations report estimates that women do 2.6 times the amount of unpaid care and domestic work that men do,or close to 30 hours per week in the U.S. alone.
Meanwhile, Yearsley, who has a special-needs child and a relative with disability says it makes sense to focus on the disability field because of the extra in-home needs of users and their caregivers. “We have a lot more work load,”she says.“Are we giving time back to caregivers?I am not going to rest until I give you back 10 hours a week.”
While Yearsley pictures an army of robots someday helping with routine homemade tasks, the first display for Akin will take time and money. Akin has received some early seed from a handful of investors, and was recently selected as a finalist for tech giant LG Nova’s Mission for the Future program, an annual challenge that seeks to identify businesses having potential to improve life and lead society into the future.
32. What might the Akin’s Al system suggest?
A. Consuming more drinks to enjoy yourself.
B. Spending more time staying with your family
C. Staying up late working to make more money
D. Purchasing products similar to what you bought.
33. Which is a contributor to Yearsley’s Al system?
A. Lots of financial support from investors
B. The uselessness of current home devices.
C. Akins’ becoming a finalist for a program.
D. Heavy burden of housewives and caregivers.
34. What can be used to describe the Akin’s AI system?
A. Successful and promising B. Stable and practical.
C. Thoughtful and innovative. D. Mature and friendly.
35. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To call on people to help the disabled.
B. To raise money for a tech giant.
C. To compare two companies’ AI systems.
D. To introduce a futuristic AI system.

When the last customer left KFC, it was already 10:30 pm. Adam, an 18-year-old college student, dragged himself home. He had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation.
Entering his room, Adam found his younger brother Bill sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.
“Sorry, Adam. I … I did something wrong,” Bill sprang up and said nervously.
“What is it?”
“This afternoon I sneaked (溜) out for a ride on your motorcycle and accidentally hit our neighbor Osman Brook’s car. I was so scared and I … I hurried home in panic.”
“Is the car seriously damaged?”
“The left headlight got broken.”
“It’s truly your fault and it’s really dangerous to ride a motorcycle at your age. Besides, it’s illegal,” Adam raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Bill lowered his head and bit his lips hard.
“Anyway, it’s no use crying over spilt milk. I will deal with it tomorrow. Now you go to bed and have a good sleep.”
The next morning when Adam got up, Bill was still sleeping soundly. Adam was more determined about what he ought to do as an elder brother.
After breakfast, Adam took out all the money he had earned and went out of the house with it. In the yard he saw his motorcycle, on whose side the scratches (划痕) were clearly visible. Adam shook his head and sighed slightly. Then he squared his shoulders and quickened his pace to Osman’s house.
When he arrived, he was welcomed by Osman’s wife Mary, who told him that Osman had gone to the garage to have his car repaired.
“I have something important to tell him. Can I wait until he comes back?” Adam requested eagerly.
“Of course. He should be home soon,” Mary invited Adam in, served him a cup of coffee and began chatting with him.
After half an hour, the door opened and in came Osman. Having said hello to each other, Osman and Adam both sat down on the sofa.
