We’ve prepared some of our favorite reads to help almost-freshmen (and their parents) get prepared for the period ahead. Wonder by R.J. Palacio How many of us wish we had been kinder in high school? Would you go back and be more accepting, or aware of other people’s difficulties? I would. Help prepare your rising freshman to be the person you wish you had been by asking them to read Wonder. It’s in fact a middle grade book, but it’s never too late to raise our kids to be kind before they hit the high school halls. When You Were Everything by Ashley Woodfolk Ashley Woodfolk, author of The Beauty That Remains, is also the author of When You Were Everything, about a best friendship between two 16-year-old girls, Layla and Cleo — and what happens when it falls apart. Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie by David Lubar Wouldn’t it be great if you got a book on how to make it through high school? Scott Hudson thinks so, which is why he’s writing one for his soon-to-be brother or sister. To make sure his future little brother or sister has an easier time than he does, Scott covers everything from bullies (欺负) to how to survive on too little sleep. Surviving High School: A Novel by Lele Pons and Melissa de la Cruz Chances are, if you’re the parent of a girl between the ages of 10 and 16, your daughter knows who Lele Pons is. A Vine star with millions of followers, she’s funny and cool. Her first novel goes deep into the world of groups, classes, and craziness that is freshman year. 21. R.J. Palacio’s. B. Ashley Woodfolk’s. C. David Lubar’s. D. Lele Pons and Melissa de la Cruz’s. 23. What do Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie and Surviving High School: A Novel share? A. They are for girls of 10-16. B. They describe true experiences. C. They were written by rising stars. D. They are helpful for new high schoolers. B The first thing I ever wrote that I was truly proud of was a letter to my father. I wrote it to him on Father’s Day. What I remember is how he reacted to that letter. He came to me, tears in his eyes, letter in his hand, and held me close and thanked me. My dad was always encouraging my love of literature (文学). I wrote about an unforgettable experience I had on a trip with him, and he talked for weeks and months and years about how much he loved my writing about that experience. He has encouraged me from the beginning so writing became my way of making him proud. One of my dearest childhood memories I have of my dad was during a big snowstorm in Monroe. My dad knew people wouldn’t drive carefully enough with the roads covered in snow. So he threw a chain (锁链) into the back of his pickup, driving aimlessly around town. Sure enough, we came across cars in ditches (沟) and helpless owners. This was before cell phones — way before. Dad would pull up and tell these people that he’d have them out “in a jiffy.” But it was what he did next that taught me my biggest lesson — it’s the thing that makes me try to be like him every single day. The owners of these cars would try to pay my dad. But he always refused, said goodbye to them, threw that chain back in the bed of the truck, and then we were off again, looking for someone else in trouble. I can’t thank my father enough for encouraging me to be a better person. I write about him in all of my books. He was always there and still is. 24. How did the author’s father feel after receiving the letter? A. Nervous. B. Crazy. C. Touched. D. Worried. 25. What does the author think of his father? A. He had a sense of humor. B. He was very supportive. C. He was proud and strong. D. He had a great interest in literature. 26. What do the underlined words “in a jiffy” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Very quickly. B. So secretly. C. Too differently. D. Quite obviously. 27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To show his deep love for writing. B. To stress the special importance of family. C. To remember his childhood spent with his father. D. To express his thankfulness and admiration for his father. C A good shower can relax not only your body but also your mind, unlocking streams of consciousness (意识流) and creativity. Research shows that what is known as the “shower effect” also can happen outside the shower, and many of our best thoughts don’t happen at work or school — but happen while going about our days with ideas incubating (酝酿) in the background. In a study, 98 professional writers and 87 physicists recorded their most creative ideas each day, as well as what they were doing and thinking when it struck them. While most of the ideas happened at work, 20 percent of their most meaningful ideas came while doing something else — washing dishes or taking a shower. Notably, the ideas the writers and physicists had away from their jobs were self-rated to be just as creative and important as the ones they had at work. However, the shower effect on creativity is the product of mind-wandering, where your thoughts are anywhere but on the task at hand. Historically, researchers focused on the negative effects of mind-wandering, which can damage performance and have been related unhappiness. But the nature of the mind-wandering matters. In another study, over 300 university students were first asked to come up with as many novel uses as possible for ordinary objects such as a brick or paper clip (曲别针) in 90 seconds. This is known as an alternative use task, which tests creativity. The students then watched a boring video. The activity gave time for the students’ ideas to develop and for their minds to wander. When the students were tested again, their mind-wandering led to more creative ideas. An activity such as taking a shower or a walk (or watching a romantic comedy video) “takes some of your attention so that they can impact your thoughts, but doesn’t take all of it so that you pay no attention to these creative ideas that are developing in the background,” said Zachary Irving, author of the study. 28. What do we know about the shower effect? A. It requires focused attention. B. It fails to work outside the shower. C. It enables people to have fresh ideas unconsciously. D. It is the main cause of people’s poor performance at work. 29. How did the researchers do the study among writers and physicists? A. They rated their ideas at work. B. They asked them to record their creative ideas. C. They tested their creativity after they took a shower. D. They required them to use an ordinary object creatively. 30. What does the study among university students show? A. Mind-wandering can harm performance. B. People’s minds can wander anywhere but on the task at hand. C. Mind-wandering has been related to unhappiness. D. Letting your mind wander during a boring task helps you think of new ideas. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. Why does the mind wander? B. How you can become a more creative person C. Why do we get our best ideas in the shower? D. How your shower practice may affect your health D Because of busy lifestyles and work stress, more Chinese people are now turning to AI tools like DeepSeek to talk about their problems. They share feelings with the chatbot and receive warm advice. This practice, known as “AI therapy (疗愈),” is becoming popular online. But can robots really replace human therapists? Around the world, 45 percent of people who needed mind wellness care in 2024 did not get it because it was too costly or there weren’t enough doctors, according to Huntington Psychological Services. Daniel Lowd, an associate professor at the University of Oregon, believes AI could help fill this gap. “If people can find some support and ideas by talking to ChatGPT or chatbot, then I think that’s wonderful,” Lowd told Newsweek. Li Yong, a doctor at the Jiangsu Province Hospital, agreed with Lowd, saying that AI meets people’s basic needs for emotional support to a point. However, AI has its disadvantages. Human therapists understand feelings deeply through face-to-face talks and create suitable treatment plans — something robots can’t fully copy. Dr. Liu Yang, a Beijing-based psychologist (心理学家), notes “An AI might recognize keywords like ‘divorce’ or ‘layoff’, but it cannot find out small emotional changes in tone or body language”. This point becomes important when dealing with a series of situations, where misunderstandings could be dangerous. Another problem is safety. AI might act like a therapist without proper training or rules. It cannot match the level of responsibility that human therapists have. Experts believe the key to safe AI therapy is strict government control. For example, Wysa, an AI mental health app, follows strict medical standards in the UK. Data privacy appears as another large concern (担忧). Users usually share personal details on AI platforms, yet few companies clearly state how this information is stored or used. In 2024, a major Chinese mental health app faced criticism when users found their chats were being analyzed for advertising algorithms (算法). As AI becomes part of daily life, finding a balance between its benefits and risks is important. While AI offers quick help, human connection remains irreplaceable for serious emotional needs. 32. What makes people turn to “AI therapy”? A. That AI therapy is warmer. B. That People feel much pressure. C. That AI tools are free. D. That DeepSeek is popular. 33. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3? A. AI may give dangerous advice because it cannot recognize any key words. B. AI often misunderstands patients and hurts them in face-to-face talks. C. AI fails to catch small emotional signs in tone and body language. D. AI is only useful for simple talks but dangerous for all difficult ones. 34. Why does the writer mention the Wysa app? A. To prove that Wysa is the most popular AI app in the UK. B. To warn people that AI apps can be very dangerous. C. To argue that AI apps do not need any strict rules. D. To give an example of safe AI under rules. 35. What can we infer from the passage? A. A balanced approach is needed for AI mental care. B. AI is completely useless for basic emotional needs. C. Government control is unnecessary for AI apps. D. Privacy concerns are the only challenge for AI therapy. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We all need friends. They had to share their table with another person who was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, the young lady went to the restroom, leaving her cellphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back. Mary saw the cellphone on the table and told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her cellphone.” Keith looked at the cellphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a cellphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can use the telephone at home.” He stared at it for some minutes, and then said slowly, “I want to take the cellphone.” Mary could not believe her ears. She stared at her brother and said, “You can’t! What if the owner comes back to look for it?” After making the decision, Keith quickly got the cellphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the restaurant. Once back home, Keith locked his room door with trembling (颤抖的) hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his own cellphone. He began polishing (擦亮) it happily. Suddenly, Mary knocked on the door and Keith let her come in. Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the cellphone. What will you tell our father about this? He will ask you how you got the cellphone.” Keith said, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Mary said, “Now you are lying too. Oh dear! When did you turn so dishonest?” Then, Mary saw a phone number on the cover of the cellphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We can ask her to come and take back her cellphone,” she was trying to persuade Keith. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 That night, Keith turned over in bed from time to time. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mary was very happy to hear that. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
