A Recently, I read Solitaire, a book about several teenagers and their lives in school. Tori is a girl who doesn’t really care about anything. Sometimes, she does things that might be annoying and make her situation worse by saying things that don’t really matter. I personally think it’s good when characters do that though. They’re not always perfect because everyone does stupid things.  While Tori’s best friend, Becky, is very confident with herself. She has loads of social skills and enjoys herself. She’s the complete opposite of Tori. And a unique boy, Michael Holden, steps into Tori’s life, slowly changing her. When a mysterious blog called Solitaire starts to do curious and dangerous things to her school, Tori and Michael join forces to try and investigate who is doing it. The thing I completely love about the book is that it is so real. I found it extremely relatable. Unlike so many other books, nothing that happens in this story couldn’t happen in real life. There is no fake (虚假的) romance, nothing fairy tale about it. I think Alice Oseman, the author of the book, has really shown the feelings and realities of teenagers and their journey through school. They can relate to people like Tori or Becky. To conclude, I can’t say enough about what an amazing read this book is. I guarantee (保证) 99 percent that you will not put it down. It relates to life very well, and the story is attractive and exciting. The storyline is very well planned out, and I loved the smaller plots between every character. I just thought the book was amazing. I think you’ll fall in love with the exciting, sensitive and unusual characters and the relatable storyline. Well done, Alice Oseman.   11. What is Tori like? A. She is popular with everyone. B. She is careless in life. C. She is in her own world. D. She is confident in herself. 12. What is true about the book Solitaire? A. It is adapted from real-life stories. B. It is different from real life. C. It is relatable to teenagers. D. It is full of romantic stories. 13. What does the writer think about the book Solitaire? A. It might be too wild. B. It is worth reading. C. It is suitable for all ages. D. Its plots are simple but well-planned. B Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of seagrass with the aid of some unusual helpers: tiger sharks. Seagrass usually grows in shallow waters. It grows in thick fields, known as meadows (草地). These seagrass meadows help clean the ocean’s water, and provide shelter for lots of sea life. They are also a big help in the fight against climate change. That’s because they store huge amounts of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). This harmful pollution is making global warming worse. Damaging these seagrass meadows will only further release (释放) this pollution back into the atmosphere. Though they’re very important, scientists don’t have a good idea of the size and number of the world’s seagrass meadows. Trying to find these meadows from above the sea waters can be quite difficult. The world’s oceans are so large in size that it’s simply not possible to make a deep study of them by diving. So a team of scientists decided to have tiger sharks help with the research. These animals were chosen as research helpers because they spend a lot of their time in and around seagrass meadows. Researchers attached cameras to the fins (鳍) of seven tiger sharks. The sharks then carried the cameras and travelled for miles over the sea floor. The cameras were designed to fall off after a few hours and then float back up to the surface. Tracking signals helped the scientists find the floating cameras and to collect the videos the sharks had taken. The scientists learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest seagrass meadow ever discovered, which could be as large as 92,000 square kilometres. The discovery means that the world has about 40 per cent more seagrass meadows than scientists had thought. The project demonstrates (示范) a powerful new way to explore the ocean. In other words, underwater animals can help us learn more about life under the sea. Animals like tiger sharks are going to take us to new places that we didn’t even know. 14. How many advantages of seagrass meadows are mentioned in the second paragraph? A. Two. B. Three. C. Five. D. Six. 15. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. The importance of seagrass to the world. B. The situation that scientists know about seagrass. C. The possibility that scientists study the meadows further. D. The reason why scientists need tiger sharks to help with the research. 16. Which best shows the structure of the whole passage? A.①/②③④⑤/⑥ B.①②③④⑤/⑥ C.①/②③④⑤⑥ D.①②③/④/⑤⑥ 17. What’s the best title of the article? A. The Seagrass Meadows of the Ocean B. Research Helpers of the Seagrass C. The New Way of Protecting the Ocean D. The Man’s New Helpers of the Ocean   C 阅读短文C,根据短文内容,从短文后面的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项是多余项。 Bringing a pet into a family with small children around is not a decision to make easily. With a couple of touches on our mobile phone, we’re able to present the best pictures of ourselves to others. However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections (瑕疵) away, we’re also changing the way we look at our ourselves. Last month, researchers from the US Boston University published an article Selfies - Living in the Era of Filtered (滤镜) Photographs. The article listed the bad effects of photo editing on people and the possibility to cause appearance worries. The researchers think that these apps make it difficult to tell between reality and fantasy (虚幻). “These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article says. In the past, people might compare their looks to those who were famous that time. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms, and their feelings are connected to how good they look,” a British doctor Escho said. This is why many young people suffer an appearance worries when it comes to how they really look. “Now you’ve got the comparison of your real self to fake self that you present on social media,” Rence Engeln, a professor at Northwestern University, told the Huff Post website. He further pointed out that when people spend too much time comparing with others, they may become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like. So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the Beauty Cam (美颜)?” Instead, we should think, “I feel good, I have my health.” 11.What may people do before they present the best of themselves on social media? A.Wearing false eyelashes. B.Redding their lips before going out. C.Using apps to edit photos. D.Smoothing their skin in the morning. 12.Which of the following is right according to the passage? A.Everybody looks as good as himself in the Beauty Cam. B.These apps make it easy to tell between reality and fantasy. C.The article listed the bad and good effects of photo editing on people. D.People today pay more attention on how good they look than in the past. 13.What did the author write this passage for? A.To call on people to care more about appearance. B.To call on people not to use apps on mobile phones. C.To call on people to spend too much time comparing with others. D.To call on people to learn something more important than appearance. Type in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask the robot to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll get the story of Max, who was on his way past many difficulties to sing among the stars. This robot writer is real. It’s called ChatGPT. From writing Shakespeare-style poetry to making music, ChatGPT has amazed the world since its launch out in late 2022 by the US company OpenAI. OpenAI developed it to generate (生成) human-like texts. It can translate languages, talk with people and write songs, poems and even jokes. It’s one of the most powerful AI of its kind, with the complete writing abilities of a real person! People around the world have tried ChatGPT and posted their results on social media. Some used it to write history reports, some asked it to take notes of presentations, and some even generated advice on how to communicate with people at a party, reported The Atlantic. The power of ChatGPT lies in is speed and understanding of complicated (复杂的) matters. We may spend hours researching, understanding and writing an article on the theory of evolution (进化论). But ChatGPT can produce a well-written one in seconds. Another good thing about it is that if you ask dark, harmful questions, such as how to make weapons (武器), it will not give you an answer. ChatGPT comes along at a time when AI is becoming increasingly able to do creative tasks. There is no doubt that ChatGPT is a powerful tool. However, some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the local networks and computers, CNN reported. The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on homework. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread improper information. “It does not build critical-thinking (批判性思维) and problem-solving skills,” said Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary of the New York City Department of Education. “The materials they create are difficult to tell from those made by humans. This causes many problems, such as the issue of copyright (版权). Since the system is largely trained using words from the Internet, it can also pick up on the Internet’s biases (偏见) and stereotypes (刻板印象) about certain groups. These are all the things that depend on humans to solve.” 14.The cat story was written to ______. A.show what creative work ChatGPT can do B.introduce a cat that wants to go to space C.introduce a series of bedtime books D.show how robots create scientific research 15.What do we know about ChatGPT?
