As vast fields surrounding Beijing and Shanghai transformed into towering skyscrapers, and old bicycles gave way to motor vehicles, the essence of music communication remained unchanged over these shifts.
“I’ll never forget that I’ve never seen so many bicycles in my life,” Philadelphia Orchestra violinist Davyd Booth said, recalling his first tour in China 50 years ago. “Everyone rode a bicycle. There were literally hundreds, thousands.”
This month, 14 musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra, including Booth, are returning to China, with performances scheduled in Beijing, Tianjin, Suzhou and Shanghai. The tour marks the 50th anniversary(周年纪念日) of their first visit in the 1970s, celebrating the unique friendship between China and the United States. Over the years, the orchestra(管弦乐团) has strengthened connections across China, with concerts and residencies that facilitate meaningful people-to-people interactions.
Booth said the 1973 tour was his first international trip with the orchestra. He considered himself lucky to have been part of the tour. He had just auditioned(试演) and got accepted into the orchestra that year. His official start date was scheduled after the orchestra’s return from China, but Booth received a call from the personnel manager informing him that someone had fallen ill. He then took the place and went to China.
“I was incredibly thrilled! Then, after I hung up, I realized I didn’t even have a passport,” Booth said. However, he got his passport and visa in just three days, thanks to the strong support from both countries. With his violin in tow, Booth joined the team on the 15-hour flight to China.
In addition to some regular compositions, the Philadelphia Orchestra also played the Yellow River Concerto, one of the most popular piano concertos in China even today. The Philadelphia Orchestra cooperated on this ensemble (合奏) with a Chinese pianist, marking the earliest ties between the US and China in music.
After the concert, the team was hanging around on the streets, Booth said. It was a fun experience even though people did not know how to talk to locals because of language barriers, he said. “You can communicate a lot by smiling, and it worked out very, very well,” he added.
4. What is the passage generally about?
A. US artists will give live performances. B. Booth recalled his first visit to China.
C. Great changes have occurred in China. D. China and the US are living in peace.
5. What do you know from paragraph 3?

7. What is the role music plays based on the passage?
A. It serves to build bridge. B. It stimulates people’s interest.
C. It contributes to equality. D. It removes barriers to harmony.

Since childhood, London-based artist Josh Gluckstein has been fascinated by the incredible diversity of our planet’s wildlife and inspired to make sculptures of animals from found materials. He often uses abandoned or recycled materials like clothing from junk shops or wood from old furniture. An important aspect of his practice is concern for the environment. “I have traveled through Asia, Latin America and East Africa, and have been fortunate enough to have some incredible wildlife encounters,” he says. “However, on my travels, even in the most remote locations, I was shocked by the huge amounts of plastic waste.”
Much of the garbage that washes up on shorelines around the world is due to an unregulated (未受监管的) system in which richer countries export waste to developing countries because it is often cheaper than developing better infrastructures (基础设施) to handle it. Many of the thousands of shipping containers exported each year are often dumped illegally.
“I remember going to the Galapagos Islands and visiting a beach famous for a large population of sea lions. It was indeed incredible to see them in the wild, but on every inch of sand not covered by sea lions, there were plastic bottles and cans. It was a heartbreaking sight. I knew I wanted to create artworks that didn’t create waste or harm our planet,” Gluckstein says.
Gluckstein hopes his works will raise people’s awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species. His new series called “Gold” focuses on illegally hunted animals by applying gold leaves to their bodies. He plans to donate some of the sales of his sculptures to the world Wide Fund for Nature.
8. What do Gluckstein’s sculptures focus on?
A. Fashion. B. Animals. C. Sports. D. Travel.
9. What does the underlined word “dumped” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Poured, B. Protected. C. Sold. D. Used.
10. What does Gluckstein mainly want to say in paragraph 3?
A. Where he has toured. B. How sad he was.
C. How he found sea lions. D. Why he created eco-friendly sculptures.
11. What does Gluckstein expect of his works?
A. They can bring him financial benefits.
B. They can make him famous as an artist.
C. They can help protect endangered animals.
D. They can improve people’s ability to appreciate art.
D
We might think of our eye color as one of our defining physical features, as personal to us as the shape of our nose. But, surprisingly, our eye color doesn’t always remain constant throughout our lives.
Evidence suggests whether a baby’s eye color changes or not depends a lot on the color itself. One study led by American researcher Cassie Ludwig tracked 148 babies born at a hospital in California, recording their iris (虹膜) color at birth. Over half of the babies were born with brown eyes, and less than one-third with blue. Two years later, the researchers found of the 40 blue-eyed babies in the study, l1 had brown eyes by the age of two, three had hazel (浅赤褐色的), and two had green. Of the 77 brown-eyed newborns, almost all (73) still had brown eyes at the age of two.
But why do blue eyes change more? The answer may be found in the fact that when the babies’ eyes did change color, they tended to become darker, not lighter. In Ludwig’s study, one-third of the babies’ eyes changed color in their first two years, with the most common change being eyes becoming darker. The trend towards darkening may be due to the build-up of a protective pigment (色素) in the irises — but more on this later.
Such relatively common, healthy color change is mostly limited to early childhood. In another study in the US, which tracked more than 1,300 twins from babyhood to adulthood, eye color usually stopped changing by the age of six. Among non-identical twins, eye color was more likely to change than among identical twins.
Sometimes color changes can be seen in hair in newborns throughout childhood. “Some babies are born with blonde hair, but they’ve got quite dark brown hair when they become older,” says Australian researcher David Mackey. “That’s probably because the pigment in your hair can increase gradually over time. “It may be a similar story for eye color,” he suggests, with greater quantities of pigment — the main pigment in the eyes is melanin (黑色素) — building up in the months or years after birth.
12. What was the finding of Ludwig and her colleagues?
A. Babies’ iris colors are likely to remain unchanged.
B. US babies are more likely to be born with blue eyes.
C. Brown eyes are likely to become several other colors.
D. Blue eyes are more likely to change color than brown eyes.
13. During the color change, what causes the babies’ eyes to become darker?
A. The growth of a pigment in the iris.
B. Unhealthy diet among two-year-olds.
C. The interaction of different colors.
D. The exposure of eyes to light.
14. Why does the author mention the study involving over 1,300 twins?
A. To prove twins’ eyes are more likely to change color.
B. To show how long eye color change will continue.
C. To explain why eye color change is common among babies.
D. To stress non-identical twins’ eyes often change color in later life.
15 How is the last paragraph mainly developed?
A. By giving descriptions. B. By following time order.
C. By making a comparison. D. By offering some examples.

Sarah, a high school student, had a great passion for baking. With her parents’ support, Sarah dreamed of opening her own bakery, a place where she could turn her interest into a business. However, she knew the importance of improving her skills and gaining real-world experience.
Therefore, every Saturday, without fail, she would set up a small but charming table at a local park. The park, filled with families and laughter, was the perfect place for Sarah to sell her creations. Her table, neatly laid out with colorful homemade cookies and cakes, attracted passers-by with the desserts’ smell.
On a particularly bright and sunny afternoon, as Sarah was carefully arranging her chocolate cookies and cakes, her attention was drawn to an elderly woman sitting alone on a bench. The woman, with her silver hair and sad eyes, seemed lost in thought. As the hours went by, Sarah noticed that the woman remained where she was, seemingly forgotten by the world. A sense of concern washed over Sarah. So she decided to act. She poured a cup of warm tea carefully and cut a generous slice of her rich chocolate cake, a crowd favorite, and approached the woman.
“I thought you might like some snacks” Sarah said with a warm, inviting smile. The woman’s face lit up as she accepted the treat. “Thank you, dear. I haven’t had such a delicious treat since my retirement,” she responded, her voice soft yet filled with gratitude. As she enjoyed the cake, tears rolled down her face.
A little shocked, Sarah asked what had happened. The woman introduced herself as Mrs. Wilson, who had been a baker before she retired. Since losing her husband to cancer a week ago, she had been living alone. Her visits to the park were her escape from the loneliness that filled her quiet home. Sarah listened attentively, her heart touched by the woman’s story.

A. The orchestra is popular in America. B. Music performances happen a lot in China.
C. Music communication remains active. D. Booth has come to China for the 50th time.
6. Booth meant that his getting the chance to come to China in 1973 was just a(an)______.
A. magic B. mistake C. luxury D. accident
7. What is the role music plays based on the passage?
A. It serves to build bridge. B. It stimulates people’s interest.
C. It contributes to equality. D. It removes barriers to harmony.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. A

【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C

15. How is the last paragraph mainly developed?
A. By giving descriptions. B. By following time order.
C. By making a comparison. D. By offering some examples.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

With the improvement of living conditions, we are paying more and more attention to our health, which includes both physical and mental health. Then how can we students live a healthy and happy life?
In my opinion, we should have a healthy diet and play sports regularly to keep physically healthy. Besides, having enough sleep is of great importance to our growing bodies. In addition, we should take a positive attitude to our life and study so that we can keep mentally healthy. Furthermore, I strongly advise that we should be kind to people around us, for we can be treated kindly in reward.
“I thought you might like some snacks,” Sarah said with a warm, inviting smile. The woman’s face lit up as she accepted the treat. “Thank you, dear. I haven’t had such a delicious treat since my retirement,” she responded, her voice soft yet filled with gratitude. As she enjoyed the cake, tears rolled down her face.
A little shocked Sarah asked what had happened.

【答案】佳作展台
Sarah decided to help Mrs. Wilson out. Every Saturday, as Sarah saw Mrs. Wilson, she would treat Mrs. Wilson to her desserts generously and chat with Mrs. Wilson in order to comfort the elderly woman and make Mrs. Wilson feel she was cared about. Influenced by Sarah’s kindness,Mrs. Wilson gradually worked through her sorrow. While enjoying Surah’s deserts, Mrs. Wilson shared her baking stories and valuable baking experience without reservation with Sarah and offered her tips on opening a bakery after knowing Sarah’s dream.
Over time their unlikely friendship became noticed in the park. Sarah’s small table was not merely a place to buy desserts; it turned into a symbol of caring for the elderly. Mrs. Wilson, once a lonely woman, found herself being surrounded by a group of new friends, whose company helped her get out of loneliness. Assisted by Mrs. Wilson, the small table has grown into a shop. Sarah’s bakery has been on the up and up with a constant stream of visitors, who are attracted by both the lovely smell and the moving story.
