B Which of these ingredients have you cooked with or eaten, wild rice, rabbits or roses? Actually, they were part of Native American cuisine in the past. Sean Sherman is a chef from the Oglala Lakota tribe, who is attempting something remarkable. Through his company and his restaurant, Sherman is bringing these ingredients back into the public eye. Sean Sherman grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation. As a reservation kid, Sherman usually didn’t have access to high-quality or tasty food. His family relied on the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which meant canned goods, tasteless food, and powdered milk. After high school, Sherman started working for the Forest Service. As part of his job, he had to learn the names of the plants, which raised his curiosity about indigenous (本土的) plants and foods. Sherman started doing lots of research on his own, and he started his company in 2014. A few years later, Sherman opened his restaurant Owamni, where he showed native ingredients and flavors. The most significant feature of the restaurant is the native ingredients, none of which is related to European civilizations. The vibe in the restaurant is totally unique as well. There, a lot of people are really struck by it, because it’s not typical to be able to go someplace and see their native foods on the menu, see native people cooking the food and listen to native music. Therefore, it’s a wholly unique experience and it’s something that’s really special. Native cuisine allows native people to explore their histories and cultures. It supports local businesses and comes with a host of health benefits. “We should have native restaurants in every city to show the diversity and flavors of all the different tribes across North America and thus have a future where native cuisine is more widespread, and ingredients are more familiar and well known,” Sherman explains. 24. When did Sean Sherman become interested in native foods? A. As he was a reservation kid. B. Before he entered high school. C. When he worked as a chef in a restaurant. D. When he was working in the forest department. 25. What is the most important feature of Sherman’s restaurant? A. The ingredients used are native. B. B. Native music is played all the time. C. Diverse ingredients are combined in each dish. D. It is a reflection of modern native civilization. 26. What does the underlined word “vibe” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Service. B. Decoration. C. Scenery. D. Atmosphere. 27. Why does Sherman suggest each city should have native restaurants? A. To boost the profits of local businesses. B. To help native people to honor their history. C. To present and promote the native cuisine. D. To serve foods with various health benefits. C A complete chicken egg estimated to be around 1,700 years old is believed to be the only of its type in the world, after scientists found it still had liquid inside. It was discovered during a dig in Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire between 2007 and 2016, with researchers saying at the time that it was a “genuinely unique discovery”. During the course of the dig, archaeologists broke three other eggs which released a “terrible smell”, but a fourth egg remained undamaged. It is the only complete egg ever found dating back to the Roman times. Now, a micro scan has found that the egg still contains the yolk (蛋黄) and egg white, and it is believed to be the only complete egg from that period. The recent work has been carried out by conservator Dana Goodburn-Brown, who took the egg for further analysis at the University of Kent. Edward Biddulph, senior project manager at Oxford Archaeology, who oversaw the dig, said, “It produced an amazing image that indicated that the egg, apart from being complete—which is incredible enough—also held its liquid inside. We were absolutely blown away when we saw the contents in there, as we might have expected them to have leaked out.” It has also been taken to London’s Natural History Museum, where Douglas Russell, the senior director of the museum, was consulted about how to conserve the egg. Mr Biddulph said, “As we found out when we visited the Natural History Museum, it appears to be the oldest known example in the world.” The egg is now being housed at Discover Bucks Museum in Aylesbury while work continues to discover how to extract (提取) the inside without breaking the delicate shell. “There is huge potential for further research and this is the next stage in the life of this remarkable egg,” Mr Biddulph said. 28. Why was Edward Biddulph shocked at the egg? A. It was badly preserved. B. It kept liquid contents inside. C. It could be blown away. D. It was still good enough to eat. 29. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs? A. The egg will be broken for further study. B. The egg will be on display in the museum. C. More studies will be carried out about the egg. D. More efforts will be put into studying the egg shell. 30. What is the best title for the text? A. The Secret of an Ancient Egg Has Been Revealed B. An Ancient Egg Reveals the History of Buckinghamshire C. An Egg Is Said to Be the Oldest Complete One in the World D. An Amazing Egg Is Still Full of Liquid 1,700 Years Later 31. What is the text? A. A news report. B. A biology essay. C. A technical invention. D. A geographical discovery. D When you think of a map, is north on the top or the bottom? Usually, maps are designed with north on top, though when we think about it, there is no logical reason for this bias (偏见). After all, there is no up or down in space. So what is wrong with south, east or west being on the top of the map? The answer is: nothing at all. In fact, north-up maps only became the norm in the last few hundred years. Ancient Egyptian maps had south at the top because the Nile River flows downhill from mountains in the south to the Mediterranean Sea in the north. Mecca was to the south of most early Muslim civilizations, and south-up maps were designed so that viewers would look up to see Mecca. Medieval Christian maps had east at the top, as they believed the Garden of Eden was in the east. The only early maps that had north at the top were those of early China because the emperor lived in the north. North seems to have settled at the top of maps during the 16th century, largely thanks to a Flemish mapmaker, Mercator. Mercator was a great admirer of an early Greek mapmaker, who, for reasons now unknown, put north at the top of maps, so Mercator did, too. When Mercator’s world map became the standard map to navigate the oceans, north up became standard as well. What is the implication of this north-view of the world? Psychologically, people tend to think of up as good and down as bad. Just think of words and phrases like “upmarket”, “upbeat” and “moving up in the world”, and how they contrast with their opposites. Because north is so consistently put at the top of maps, people now think of north as good, too. Several attempts have been made in recent years by introducing south-up maps to the market. These maps not only give us a chance to see the world differently, but also give everyone the chance to see themselves on top. 32. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A. North-up maps were rare in ancient times. B. Deciding up or down in space is ridiculous. C. Mecca maps were based on a legend. D. The south-up map first appeared in ancient Egypt. 33. Why is north associated with good? A. An illogical reason. B. The spread of Mercator’s maps. C. People’s preference for up. D. An age-old tradition in Greece. 34. What is the author’s attitude to south-up maps? A. Cautious. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Disapproving. 35. What’s the main purpose of the text? A. To criticize a phenomenon. B. To compare various facts. C. To correct a cultural bias. D. To argue for a viewpoint. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We've all been there—you've sent a message and it's marked "read", but you haven't heard anything back. What's the deal? While being left on read (已读不回) can be confusing, it's also pretty common.      36      Here are a few tips. Expect the best. Remind yourself that the person is probably just busy. Ask yourself if you actually know their schedule. There could be some time commitments you aren't aware of. Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response.      37     They put their phone away to focus on work or school. They accidentally forgot to reply. Maybe they thought about what they wanted to say but didn't actually text it. Resist the temptation (诱惑) to double-text.     38     If you send a lot of follow-up texts, it'll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch up on—the other person will probably appreciate your patience. Read over your previous messages. See if there are any confusing texts that you need to clarify. It's okay if you review your message again and notice that it might have been a little unclear—it happens!      39          40     Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind. Here’s some various ideas on it. Some students warmly welcome the new policy, believing it will help enhance the concept of labour, and simultaneously acquire necessary life skills, which will benefit them all their lives. Other students don’t agree. They think it is just a waste of time. They can learn to work naturally when they grow up. Right now they should devote their precious time to studies. Although both sides have valid points, I am just supportive of the new policy. Well organized, it can help us become physically and mentally healthy. It will require classes to end now, at 1l o'clock, Lunch will still be served in the cafeteria; you may have it now, For senior students who have driven to school, you're welcome to drive home, but please be careful. For everyone else, the school buses are coming at noon. You are advised to wait in the caleteria until then. But please, for everyone in the school, call your parents to tell them what you're doing. It's quite a dangerous situation out there right now, And by this evening, we'll have almost a meter of snow on the ground. Next, wait for an announcement from our school bus driver, Jamie Johnson. He will tell you more information about bus schedules and safety advice. Thanks. everyone and please, stay safe out there. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
