Cassette recorder (磁带录音机)
14-year-old Song Zhengchen’s heirloom is a cassette recorder. His grandmother bought the recorder in the 1980s and listened to the news on it. His mother the used it to listen to music tapes. When Song was young, his mother often played old poems for him on the radio. “There are now many cool players. But we still keep this one because it recorded beautiful memories of my family,” said Song.
Medal of honor
Guo Kexing’s heirloom is a medal from his great-grandfather. He took part in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. For the 13-year-old boy, the medal stands as an honor for his family. “Whenever I see my great-grandfather’s medal, I take great pride. In my heart, my great-grandfather is a hero. Food coupons (粮票)
Xiao Yao, 14, won first prize in the activity. Her heirlooms are some food coupons. Her grandma used to tell her stories about food shortages when she was a kid. Back then, people could only get certain food each month. Even buying rice required a special coupon. Xiao was amazed by this. She said, “My grandma wants me to be thankful for what we have today and work hard for a better tomorrow.”
Ms. Huang organized the activity. She believes that heirlooms are the deep connections of the family, “Students’heirloom stories show the beautiful memories of their families. I hope they can get the students to carry on good family traditions and love their family and country,” said Huang
