The Paris Olympics are getting ready to protect against cyberattacks (网络攻击), which could come from criminals.
“Any kind of disruption (破坏) is on the table,” John Hultquist, an analyst (分析员) in a US cybersecurity consultancy firm, told AFP. He added that he worried about everything from the TV stations to transport facilities (设备) and the competitions.
His worries are understandable since cyberattacks often happen during the Olympics. The first attack was in Montreal, Canada, in 1976, causing a 48-hour disruption to information systems. Tokyo Olympics faced 450 million cyberattacks in 2021.
To deal with cybersecurity problems, the Paris Olympics will be the first to heavily depend on artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能). For example, AI will be used to organize data faster and pick out key events.
Even so, a senior member of the French army warned that there are so many possible enemies that it’s hard to deal with every attack. These attacks could focus on gyms, local transportation and media reporting of the Games.
There is also worry about attacks through unreal videos. According to Betsy Cooper, a cybersecurity expert in the US, AI makes it easier to damage the integrity (诚信) of sports. Cooper said that deepfake videos could be used to twist what really happens during the Games.
Hultquist also warned that competition results could be changed, pointing out the risk of interference (干扰) with cameras, clocks, and scoreboards. Stressing data security, he suggested keeping systems separate and using paper backups (备份) for scores to make sure they stay safe.
