But Ma Baoli, a China Southern Airlines pilot known as “poetic captain”, recites ancient Chinese poetry instead. While flying over the Yellow River, he thinks of this poem: “Do you not see the Yellow River come from the sky, rushing into the sea, and never come back?” Above the Yangtze River, he recites: “Wave after wave, the Yangtze River rushes east, sweeping away with it all our heroes.” Ma likes reading poetry in his spare time. During the flights, he sometimes shares poems with passengers about the places they are flying over after broadcasting (播送) basic flight information. The perfect mix of poem and flying is deeply loved by the Chinese people and has won him many fans. On Sina Weibo, people expressed their admiration for Ma and their wish to hear his poetic broadcasts on his flights. “There is a great love for poetry. In fact, many Chinese people have a special feeling for it,” said Ma. His father used to paint on the white walls of their house and write poems to go with the paintings. As a child, he enjoyed watching his father do these things and listening to him recite poems. It planted a love of ancient poetry in his early heart. No wonder his love for poetry has now become a family tradition. Like the father, Ma’s daughters, aged 6 and 9, are also interested in poetry and traditional Chinese culture. “Chinese classical poetry and traditional culture have brought me a wonderful experience.
