The metaverse on campuses
大学校园里的元宇宙
The metaverse has been one of the world's hottest topics in recent years. Now, universities in China are jumping on the bandwagon. They are trying to bring their programmes into this new, virtual(虚拟的)space.
About seventy universities in China have dipped their toes into the metaverse. Take Tsinghua University as an example. In April 2022,it opened its Metaverse Culture Lab. The lab has been researching "virtual communities”and“virtual humans”.
Professor Shen is the director of the lab. His team has already developed a metaverse course. Some of the classes are held on a metaverse platform. The professor explains that there are many differences between teaching in the metaverse and teaching in the real world. The biggest one among them is that metaverse classes are not limited by time and space. For example, the class can take place on Mars or in a space station. In the future, Shen adds, some virtual humans will be brought into the classroom. Students might then be able to communicate with Confucius.
At the same time, some universities have held discussions in the metaverse. Some have opened “virtual campuses”. You can use virtual reality (VR) equipment to "walk" around these campuses and get a taste of university life.
It remains to be seen how the metaverse will truly change education, though. Maybe, in the future, you will be able to receive your higher education in the metaverse. Would you look forward to that?
