International wetland cities in China
中国的国际湿地城市
Seven Chinese cities were awarded international wetland cities at the COP14. The seven cities are Hefei, Jining, Liangping, Nanchang,Panjin, Wuhan and Yancheng. So far, there have been 13 international wetland cities in China. Now China is the country with most such cities.
In the past ten years, China has created and restored(恢复)more than 800,000 hectares(公顷)of wetlands, including 64 wetlands of international importance, 29 of national importance and 1,021 of provincial importance.
These wetlands show a great variety(不同种类)of styles. The Yellow River Wetland Park in Yinchuan, Ningxia is not only a good destination for local people to take a walk, but also a habitat loved by migratory birds(候鸟).As a result, it has become a famous spot for birdwatching. Liangping District in Chongqing, however, is totally different from natural wetlands. It is more closely tied to human activities. People build small wetlands in rural areas. What is more, they have combined these wetlands with organic(有机的)farms, homestays and health care centres. These activities have resulted in an income increase of over 50,000 yuan per family.
Wetlands are one of the most important ecosystems(生态系统).Their ability to take in a great amount of water benefits both humans and animals, especially during periods of flooding. That is why wetlands have been described as the kidneys(肾)of the Earth.
