Passage 1
阅读短文, 根据短文内容选择一个最佳答案。
Elephants are the biggest animals that live on land. When born, a baby elephant
weighs about 91 kilograms, the weight of a grown man. It is about 91 centimeters
high. When it reaches the age of six, it is about one hundred and eighty鄄three
centimeters high. When it reaches the age of twelve, it does not grow any more.
Elephants are kind animals. When one of them is hurt and can蒺t pull itself on to its
feet, the other elephants will lift it up and help it to walk.
The giraffe is the tallest modern land animal. It can be over 5.5 meters tall. Its
neck alone may be 1.9 meters long. Yet the giraffe has only seven bones in its neck,
the same number as in the human. Even a small bird has many more bones in its neck
than in a tall giraffe. Each bone in a giraffe蒺s neck is very long, while the bones in a
human neck are small. That makes the difference. A female giraffe gives birth to one
baby at a time. The baby is about 1.9 meters tall at birth. By the age of eight, it is
full鄄grown. The giraffe mostly eats the leaves. Because it has a long neck, it can reach
the leaves high up on the trees.
