Part Ⅰ WRITING WORKSHOP
Dear Mr Jenson,
I am writing on behalf of① the school's Student Union. As you may know,[1] we are running a school-wide public speaking competition, and the final will take place② at the lecture hall on 10 May(9 am-12 pm).I am writing to ask whether you would be willing to③ help us judge the final competition.[2]
Since March, we have already had two rounds of the competition, with more than 100 students. Now we have 12 students left[3] for the final. The topic of the final speech is“Education for Innovation”.Students have to give a five-minute speech on the topic in English.
During the final round, as a judge, you would be responsible for listening to all the speeches, noting down any positive or negative aspects for each one.[4] Competitors should be judged on their pronunciation, clarity and fluency, and also progression of ideas and audience engagement.[5] Then you will discuss your notes with three other judges, and come to a decision④ about who comes first, second and third.
Would you have time to attend a short meeting at the Student Union Room at 4 pm on 8 May so that we can introduce you to the other judges and discuss the details?[6] We would not take up too much of your time.

Dear Mr Wang,
I am the chairman of the Student Union of Xinhua School. I'm writing the letter on behalf of the Student Union with the intention of inviting you to give us a report whose topic is choosing a positive attitude towards life.
Some students who are sensitive, reserved or unmotivated have trouble associating with their mates. By contrast, some are distracted or chatter away when having classes. Others are upset, depressed or desperate because of intense and demanding courses. In addition, a few students complain occasionally, which is hard to handle.
I'll be sincerely grateful if you can give us some practical and effective advice on these emotional problems.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
Part Ⅱ VIEWING WORKSHOP READING CLUB 1 & READING CLUB 2
READING CLUB 1 PEER PRESSURE
Activate and share
1.What is peer pressure in your opinion?
Answers may vary.
2.Have you ever encountered peer pressure?
Answers may vary.
3.How do you feel about it?
Answers may vary.
Read for general understanding
Read through the passage and find out how does the author develop the text?
By asking four questions.
Read for details
Can you find answers for the following questions in the passage?
Question 1
What is peer pressure and why does it happen?
Peer pressure can happen when we are influenced to do something that we would not usually do because we want to be accepted by our peers.
Question 2
How does peer pressure affect people?
It can influence how people dress, how they talk, what music they listen to, what attitudes they adopt and how they behave.
Question 3
Can peer pressure lead to bullying?
Peer pressure definitely plays a role in bullying. If a teenager is seen as weak or different by the majority of their peers, they can become a target for bullies.
Question 4
What can students do to avoid peer pressure?
The most important thing is to build up self-confidence, so that it is easier to say “no” to the peer group. Students can do this by choosing their friends wisely: It's a good idea for teens to surround themselves with positive role models. It's also important for young people to think about the consequences of their actions.
Critical thinking
1.What is your opinion about the writer's suggestions on how to avoid peer pressure? What might be the challenges?
I think the ideas the writer suggests are good. We should choose friends who accept us and won't try to change us. However, sometimes our classmates try to pressure us into doing things and it can be embarrassing to say “no”. And we are afraid that we might be left out and loose the sense of belonging to our group.
2.Do you think peer pressure is always passive? Why?
No. I don't think it is always passive. It depends on how we consider it. When seeing peers around us are much better than us, instead of being anxious, we can regard them as our role model. It's a good idea to learn from them and push ourselves forward. Taking good advantage of peer pressure will promote our learning and help us grow progressively.

Who is a genius? This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.
Let's state clearly: Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us? And who are they?
In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this is not a surprise. It's said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women, or people of a different color or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.
A study recently published by Science found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender(性别)are “really, really smart.” Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief: Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are “really, really smart.” Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up? It doesn't take a genius to know the answer: absolutely not.
Here's the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we're all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with “intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world.”
1.What does the author think of victors' standards for joining the genius club?
A.They're unfair. B. They're conservative.
C.They're objective. D.They're strict.
故选A。]
2.What can we infer about girls from the study in Science?
A.They think themselves smart.
B.They look up to great thinkers.
C.They see gender differences earlier than boys.
D.They are likely to be influenced by social beliefs.
根据第四段的“Even worse, the study found that...children who are ‘really, really smart.’”
3.Why are more geniuses known to the public?
A.Improved global communication.
B.Less discrimination against women.
C.Acceptance of victors' concepts.
D.Changes in people's social positions.
根据最后一段的“In a wired world with constant...genius wherever they appear.” 故选A。]
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.Geniuses Think Alike
B.Genius Takes Many Forms
C.Genius and Intelligence
D.Genius and Luck
和最后一段的“And the more we look...who are able to change the world.”

Anna was the school's best dancer and this was what she told her parents everyday. “Mrs.Kelly says I am very gifted,” she said, “She says maybe I will be the best dancer in our ballet(芭蕾)team.”
Mrs. Kelly had said these things, but she had said so to a number of dancers in order to encourage them because she believed it's important to get students inspired. Anna was also inspired by her words to be winner and beat everyone else. However, Mrs. Kelly actually preferred that Anna just liked to dance on the stage.
“Students! Students!”Mrs. Kelly called to the small group of girls around Anna. “I'd like to introduce to you our new student, Sally. She loves dancing as you do. I hope you all take time to say hi to her nicely.”
Anna looked at Sally with dancing shoes in her hands. Sally did not have a dancer's body: She was short, with legs that looked like they belonged to a frog instead of an eleven-year-old girl. Anna felt relaxed and was sure this girl would not dance well.
In the following weeks, however, it turned out that Anna made a wrong guess about Sally's dancing performance. In fact, Sally was not jut a good dancer, but an amazingly gifted dancer. She danced in beautiful ways that Anna thought was impossible for such a short girl.
What's more, Sally was a nice girl. She often helped girls with difficult dance moves. She was active, she was smart, and everyone liked her. It seemed that Sally was taking everything away from Anna.
Anna was sad and mad. The school ballet team would pick out the best dancer in only two weeks. She worried that Sally would win the contest and become the best dancer.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1:
Anna felt upset and then she thought out a plan. She began to think of the plan carefully. Firstly, she thought Sally must perform badly and leave a terrible impression on audience on the stage. Therefore, she decided to put something that couldn't be found in Sally's shoes. An idea hit her: sand, which seemed to be the most suitable thing for this plan. As a result, Anna put some sand in Sally's shoes secretly.
Paragraph 2:
Sally put on her dancing shoes, feeling something wrong with them. However, she insisted on dancing with the smiling expression to present the perfect condition. Looking at her insistence with pain, Anna felt a sense of guilt instead of the pleasure from success of the plan. So, Anna told the truth in shame and chose to withdraw from the competition after Sally limped painfully off the stage. To her surprise, Sally smiled and said, “it's the friendship rather than the best dancer that matters.” Anna was moved deeply and headed for the stage.
