Everyone knows China is changing and
developing very quickly. Many young people
from home and abroad think about the changes.
The following are what some of them said on the
Internet.
Jiayu,Toronto
Im very proud(
)of China. And Id like
to make a real contribution(
#
) to the
development of my country. When I finish
my training in Canada,Ill go back to China
and start a business. In this way,I can give
something back to my country.
Zihan,Gansu
Im a Chinese student in America. My
hometown used to be very poor. But its
changed. Most people in my hometown have
a good standard of living and many can now
afford cars. Im very pleased with these changes
and very proud of them.
Jackson,
Oxford
I spent a year in Beijing as a student in the
late 1990s and I recently went back there on
holiday. I couldnt believe the changes which
had taken place in such a short time. What I
admire(
()
) in Chinese people are their
wish to succeed, their family values and their
hard working. I think these will be very
important if China continues developing.
Sean,
Hongkong
I hope China will become a richer and
stronger country. Theres still a long way to
go and there are many difficulties ahead.
However,Im sure we can deal with them
and make China stronger if we work together.

It was a rainy, windy October afternoon.
Garth stood outside his house with a wide smile.
The weather was perfect for testing his new
invention —Umbrella Hat. He could hardly
wait to see whether it could keep the rain off.
He walked along the street. The hat worked.
Suddenly,three boys in his neighborhood
appeared and stopped him. Todd, the oldest
one, pulled his Umbrella Hat off his head.
“Whats this?”he asked.
“Its an Umbrella Hat. You can wear it on
rainy days and爥”Garth said.
The boys laughed,“Will anyone wear that
stupid thing?”Todd threw the hat onto the
ground and then ran off.
Garth picked up his Umbrella Hat from the
ground with tears. “Maybe Todd was right. In
reality, who would ever need his invention?”
He lowered his head and said to himself.
Suddenly he looked up and saw a lady
looking at him. “I was just leaving my house

Dear Helen Keller,
My name is Amelia Grant. I live in a small
city. There,my father has an oil factory. At the
age of eight,something ? happened
while I was playing near an oil happily.
? ,it made me lose most of my

A lot has changed for me ?
then. For one thing,I can not hear music like
before. I used to love listening to my mother
sing songs. ? I first lost my hearing,
I was sad that I could never again hear my
mother sing. But now I put my ear to her chest to
feel the vibrations(

Now,I feel music instead of hearing it.
Also,I have to go to a ? school
in another city—Texas School for the Deaf. It
is over 300 kilometers away from my hometown.
The ? there are kind, but I can only
see my parents during holidays. I miss them

During our last winter holiday,my daddy

of My Life. From it,I learned a lot about you.
When you first became deaf and blind, you had
a hard time ? people what you
wanted. Because of this, you would sometimes
get mad and make loud noises. Now I know
your feelings and I am ﹣ by your

Dear Charlie,
How is it going? You asked me about what
we should do ﹣ stop pollution in our
village in your last letter. Now Im writing to
tell you something about it.
Firstly,we dont burn straws any more
these days, which helps to stop air pollution.
Secondly, the local government has put lots
﹣ dustbins on the streets where we
can throw rubbish. This makes ﹣
easier for us to deal with or recycle the
rubbish. Thirdly, the street lights will be shut
off at 10 p.m. On the one hand,it helps save
electricity,on the other hand,it also helps stop
light pollution. All in all, people here are
trying to live ﹣ much greener life,so
we can do our part to save the earth.
Im glad to know what you do to improve
the environment. Looking forward to hearing
﹣ you again.
Yours,
Li Ming

Do you often yawn?Do you
know why we yawn?According to
some research,there are about 20
reasons that scientists think are responsible(
ë
©?.
)for it. They do not know exactly
why yawning happens, but they do know many
facts about yawning.
We know that everyone yawns in the same
way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your
mouth stays open for about five seconds. You
take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then
you quickly close your mouth. We also know
that yawning is contagious(
@H.
). When
you see someone yawn,you yawn,too.
Many people say they yawn because they
are bored or tired. That might be true. People
do often yawn before they sleep and after they
wake up. However,we know that people also
yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic
runners,for example,often yawn before a race.
Why is that?Scientists found that a yawn can
help a warm brain cool down.
Some scientists believe that yawning makes
you notice things more quickly. When you
yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch(
A
)the muscles(
"#
)in your face,mouth
and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe
this helps you to be quicker to notice things.
In some countries, people think yawning is
not nice. People put their hands over their
mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries,
people think yawning is healthy. They think
that opening the mouth very wide can let good
things in. When they breathe out, they think
that bad things go out of the body with the air.
Scientists do not spend much time studying
yawning. That is probably because yawning
does not hurt. It is just something we do.
!"#$%&'()*+,
。
? What does the underlined word “it” in
Para. 1 refer to?
A. Some research.
B. Our yawning.
C. The reason why we yawn.
D. The fact about yawning.
? Why do Olympic runners often yawn before a
race?
A. Because they are too tired or too bored.
B. Because a yawn can let good things in.
C. Because a yawn can help a warm brain
cool down.
D. Because a yawn can stretch the muscles
in their faces.
? According to the passage, .
A. people use different ways to yawn
B. scientists will do further research on yawning
C. its hard to notice things quickly while
youre yawning
D. some scientists think that yawning is
good for people
? What is the main idea of Para. 5?
A. Reasons for yawning.
B. Good opinions of yawning.
C. Bad opinions of yawning.
D. Different ideas about yawning.

Now there is a family problem. Nearly
every parent says that we never grow up. In fact,
we are probably 15 or 16 years old. ?
For example, when we need to stay at home
alone, they always worry about us and our life
without them.
Most parents always think that they have
offered the best things to make their children
live a comfortable life. They buy their children
pretty clothes, cool shoes and expensive school
things. They think that they have done
everything that they can do for their dear
children. ?
But why still cant we understand our
parents?Does it mean that we still want more
material(
ÀB.
)things?No. Actually,what
we want is a true family. What does a true
family mean?? From here,we can
get warmth,we can get comfort, and we can
get happiness. And one important thing is that
we will become stronger and more confident in
the outside world because we know that we have
a true family behind us.
? I think that parents should sit
down to talk with their children to let them
know that they have a happy family,so the
children and their parents can understand each
other better and better. ? Thats
what we really need from our parents.
