I usually took a bus to school. I found that
most passengers were quiet and never had a
1 with anyone else.
About a year ago,an old man got on the
bus and said loudly to the driver,“Good
morning!”Most people looked up, 2 why.
The bus driver didnt take it seriously and just
replied in a cold 3 ,“Mmhmm.”The
next day the man got on and again he said,
“Good morning!”to the driver. Another “Mm
hmm”. By the fifth day,the driver finally
answered him with a little 4 “Good
morning!”Then the man said,“My name is
Benny.” The driver told the man that he
was Sam.
That was the first time any of us had heard
the drivers name and soon people began to talk
to each other and say hello to Sam and Benny.
Soon Benny 5 his happy “Good morning!”
to the whole bus. Within a few days, his
“Good morning!”was 6 by a lot of “Good
mornings” and the whole bus seemed to be
7 . People got to know each other.
“Benny showed friendship among us with
a 8 ‘Good morning!’,”I thought.
Then 9 ,Benny stopped appearing.
Everyone began to ask about Benny, wondering
what 10 to him. No one knew what to do
and the bus got 11 again. So,last week,I
started to act 12 Benny. I said “Good
morning!” to everyone and the whole bus
13 again. Hopefully,Benny could come
back to see his “Good morning!”work very
well.
Sometimes we see some strangers so many
times that we know their 14 well, but we
never even say hello to them. By saying hello,
15 starts to grow, and sunshine comes to
the world around us,and love spreads over the
community we are in. Why not start a “hello”

A team of scientists from Europe looked at
more than 35,000 wild bird nests(
S
)as part
of a new study. They found 176 kinds of bird
have been building their nests with human
rubbish, including things like plastic bags and
cigarette butts(
DT
).
“This is worrying —it is becoming
increasingly clear that such things can harm
baby birds and even adult birds,”said Zuzanna
Jagiello,one of the scientists.
According to the scientists, seabirds in
Australia use fishing nets, birds living in cities
in South America add cigarette butts to their
nests, and blackbirds in Europe add plastic
bags to their nests.
Although birds have been adding human
rubbish to their nests as far back as the 1830s,
the team of scientists said it has increased in
recent years.
Scientists say adding human rubbish to
nests can be bad for baby birds. They can get
caught. Bright colored rubbish can catch
dangerous animals eyes,some rubbish makes
the baby birds sick, and the birds can mistake
the rubbish for food.
However,the scientists were surprised to
discover some rubbish was helpful to the birds.
Cigarette butts have something in them which
can drive away some parasites(
Uäã
)that
would usually hurt the baby birds. They also
found some kinds of rubbish, such as plastics,
help to keep nests drier and warmer.
The scientists say more work is needed to
learn about how pollution is affecting(
/0
)
wildlife, and want to encourage people to take
pictures of bird nests where they live.
!"#$%&'()*+,
。
? What are the scientists worried about?
A. The birds use too much rubbish.
B. There are too many birds on earth.
C. The rubbish can be harmful to the birds.
D. The birds make it hard to reuse the
rubbish.
? What does Para. 3 mainly talk about?
A. Birds live in different places in the world.
B. Different birds add different rubbish to
their nests.
C. Birds are good at choosing the best
materials(
v
).
D. Some human rubbish is more popular
among birds than other litter.
? What does the passage tell us about human
rubbish?
A. It can make birds nests stronger and
safer.
B. It can take the place of food for baby
birds.
C. It can bring dangerous animals to baby
birds.
D. It can help birds and other animals live
in peace.
? What can we infer about the scientists from
the passage?
A. They advise people should study birds.
B. They may probably continue their study.
C. They think human rubbish does no good
to birds at all.
D. They think birds have learned to use
human rubbish to build nests recently.
? Whats the best title for this passage?
A. Birds—Excellent Home Builders
B. Human Rubbish—New Building Materials
C. Birds Do Better in Reusing Things Than
Humans
D. Birds Build Their Nests with Human
Rubbish

Here are three common ? that
we should know. People,especially parents,
should know first aid in order to deal with some

A father bought a kite for his son. He

Hody Childress,a farmer from Geraldine,
Alabama, lived the last 10 years of his life with
a little secret(
WX
).
In the small town where he lived,
Childress wanted to help his community. He
knew there were families in his hometown who
lived a hard life. So one day he asked his local
pharmacist(
0YZ
)Brooke Walker a question
that would help many people.
“He said,‘Do you have anybody that
cant pay for their medicine?’ and I said,
‘Yeah, that happens a lot.’”Walker told
the BBC.
So Childress gave away
ß
100 to the local
pharmacy(
0[
)for anyone who couldnt pay
for their medicine,saying:“Next time that
happens, please use it!Dont tell where it
came from, and dont tell me who needed it.
This continued for nearly 10 years,up
until his death in January. And his story only
came to light at his funeral(
\]
),when his
daughter Nix wanted to show what kind of man
her father was.
In fact, the 80yearold man only told the
whole thing to his daughter when he couldnt
get to the pharmacy himself. He asked his
daughter to take a
ß
100 bill to the pharmacy
every month.
Nix continued to drop off the money to the
pharmacy and didnt tell anybody about what
her dad was doing.
With her brother Doug,Nix shared,“We
had a really hard time whether to allow this
story out to the public, but I think a small
action can turn into a big one,or it can turn
into something that gives people hope. Maybe it
can encourage someone to be a better person
and help others.”
According to the BBC,since the story
appeared on the newspaper, the pharmacy has
received money given away by people from all
over the country.

Do you like to work with others or work
alone?Have you thought of the importance of
collaborative(
3ë.
)skills??
An organization(
`
)carried out research
on students abilities to work together in
groups. They found students who did well in
tests by themselves were probably better at
working with other people.
? Students in Japan, the
Republic of Korea,Finland and Canada,whose
test scores are high, also do well in working
together to solve problems. But this is not true
for every country. Chinese students who have
high scores as well, showed just average(
5a
.
)collaborative skills.
“One reason might be that Chinese parents
and teachers pay too much attention to scores,”
said Zhao Zhongxin, the former vice president
of the Chinese Family Education Association.
“? And they regard school as a
place for competition.”
“However, collaborative skills are very
important for students,” he added.
“? And they are thinking of ways to
help students to improve these skills.”
The organization also found the classroom
environment might affect how well students
work together. In class where there are lots of
activities that ask for communication,students
tend to have better attitudes(
%&
) towards
collaborating.
? They said that girls are more
ready to listen to others opinions.
